In a perfect world, people would understand that acne is an internal problem and come to see me to get to the root of it.  I heal people with acne (some very severe cases) everyday and I know that acne is best addressed from within in order to experience any lasting remediation of pimples and their attendant inflammation.  See my articles, Is there a Natural Acne Cure??? Still, I understand that people are looking to appear better FAST, and there are natural substances that can assist in the facilitation of clearing breakouts, acne, pores and inflammation.

Today, we shall take a look at these natural topicals and our ACNE ATTACK new product line which incorporates them.

Problem:  Clogged Pores

Superficially, clogged pores cause pimples because they cause the pores to become clogged with bacteria.  Getting these pores to open and stay open depends upon one's skin type and the condition of the skin and its inflammation.

Our ACNE ATTACK astringents  are gentle, natural alcohol free fresheners for normal to dry skin types.  Either can be used twice per day or as needed.

Cooling  Acne Toner contains two agents that cool inflammation aloe and cucumber extract. These agents also gently open pores and are non drying. This is so important for good skin. WAKE UP!  Contains ginseng a revitalizing herb to open pores and glycolic acid  from fruits to exfoliate the skin.

Cleansing ACNE Prone Skin

is another challenge.  Harsh, alcohol based or highly acidic products can cause increased inflammation and oil production resulting in MORE breakouts.  Most skin is happier with kinder gentler treatment.  If skin is dry due to inflammation and product abuse from too drying products a non soap based cleanser such as my Calming Azulen Milk will dissolve even wax based makeup and open pores with a special blend of essential oils. Some of these oils also inhibit bacteria growth.

Oilier, less sensitive or dry skin can tolerate AHA/BHA alpha and beta hydroxyl acids which open pores, exfoliate dead cells and normalize oil production.  My Acne Attack cleansing gel fits this exactly.

Blemish Control

Depending upon skin type and damage, various natural substances can help facilitate the healing of blemishes. Camphor, Zinc and Sage among other substances like lactic acid from milk and glycolic acid from fruits are all present in my ACNE ATTACK drying lotion and Acne Attack Drying Mask.  These products should only be applied to actual blemishes.  For the rest of your skin, I recommend one of two exfoliating serums.  FACE UP! Is a special blend of fruit enzymes which again gently exfoliate the skin and encourage new skin growth.  Nourish UP!              Natural Healing For Canker Sores

 

Most people are not aware that canker sores , which are quite painful and can last awhile,  are indicative of other underlying health problems.  They are unrelated to cold sores which are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus and are highly contagious.  Canker sores are unsightly, painful, but non-contagious. Alot of people believe they are triggered or caused by acidic foods.

 

Some underlying health conditions that may lead to canker sores are an impaired immune system due to intestinal dysbiosis, chronic allergy, underlying infections,  nutritional problems, such as vitamin B-12, zinc, folic acid , or iron deficiency; and gastrointestinal tract disease and digestive disorders, such as Celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disorders like Crohn's  disease, even squamous cell cancers.

Obviously, the first step in gaining permanent natural relief from canker sores is establishing the cause be it food sensitivities, infection, vitamin deficiencies or anything else.  A naturopath will be the natural health specialist most likely to help you.

  I am a Naturopath, Clinical Nutritionist and Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist.  I have personally been gluten free for probably a decade...dairy free too, I might add.  Despite this, I am not an advocate for the vast majority of gluten free products out there.  I am also not of the belief that going gluten free is any type of health panacea but I won't cover that today.

 

Here's why I don't like these products:

 

#1 Processing

Most Gluten Free products are highly processed.  I only advocate products in as close to a natural state as possible.

 

#2 Sugar Content

#3 Fiber Content

Most, the very vast majority of Gluten Free products,  are not made from whole grains but from refined white flours of various kinds.  Since dietary fiber is necessary for gut health, and to proliferate healthy gut bacteria and colon cancer is the #2 cause of cancer deaths in the US, this is alarming to me.

 

#4 Non Fortification

 

In a perfect world, foods would not be adulterated, but the truth is that for a very long time in the US,  wheat has been fortified with vitamins.  Fortified breads, cereals, and baked goods are the major source of B vitamins for US Citizens.  Unfortified products then could become a huge public health concern especially with regard to things like heart disease and homocysteine levels and for pregnant women who need ample folic acid to prevent some known birth defects.

 

I am not a gluten advocate by any stretch but I know most people have NO IDEA what doing gluten free really entails.  Most of you are just jumping on a silly bandwagon.

 

If you are determined to do so properly, I applaud you but please understand that it is a tremendous commitment to do correctly.  This means alot of time spent researching, shopping, and in food preparation and cooking.

 

A couple tips I will give you are: create your own gluten free flour, bake your own baked goods, use xantham gum as a gluten subsitute in pasta and bread recipes, but cut WAY down on grain consumption.

 

Get your nutrients from non grain sources like non GMO whole raw foods.

Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, tofu, lean proteins like fish, and good fats like coconut and avocado.

 

Then you will improve your health by going gluten free, and isn't that the IDEA?  Or is it just another Lemming craze that will just make you sicker?

I recently returned an expired bottle of balsamic vinegar to a VERY popular grocery store.  I explained to the manager on duty that it had tasted "off" and I had then checked the label and seen that it had expired several months earlier.

 

Several days later I was in that aisle again and I checked and found my opened and used product back on that store's shelf.  After I complained, I checked again and found said product just moved further back.

 

Isolated incident?  Doesn't seem to be.   In a country where foods are heavily regulated food manufacturers and retailers find ways to scam the public and raise profits.  Many food manufacturers deceive you by subsituting less expensive ingredients as in the well known olive oil scam, or by diluting the product in question.  In some other cases some products are not even close to what the buyer thinks they are getting.

 

Bottom feeding ethics being what they are so often, the US Pharmacopial Convention has set up a data base reporting this type of behavior/product.

 

Food Fraud is the deliberate manipulation, subsitution, tampering, misleading consumers regarding food products.  There is a database to report infractions.  Common food fraud products are extra virgin olive  oil, orange juice, honey, coffee, fish, milk, pomegranate juice-which doesn't even contain a smidgen of pomegranate. 

 

Report these companies. But Better still:  patronize stores that specialize in whole foods and that report on the countries of origin.  Buy from local Co-op Markets and from local farmer markets and local farmers.

 

Don't fall victim to these thieves and swindlers.

Gentle Readers!

 

I apologize for no updates since Thanksgiving but since Halloween I have been involved in a very important case, my sister Thyra's dog Rainn!

 

Rainn developed problems back in October which were thought to be chronic hepatitis or a copper storage disorder which were causing liver inflammation.

 

I had another idea.  Chronic inflammatory bowel disorder which had progressed to gastritis and chronic liver inflammation.

 

After weeks of trying various interventions and admission to the animal ICU in Chicago Friday, turns out this theory was correct.

 

Chronic gut infection, probably since birth since she is a young pitbull, had caused widespread and terrible systemic infection and inflammation throughout her body.  Her liver troubles had made for a very risky business in controlling and resolving both then infection and inflammation and she had lost tons of weight and blood.

 

I have been participating fully in both Rainn's care and supporting my sister in her anxiety. This has taken several hours each day. Things have been very stressful and guarded at all times and at some times extremely dire.

 

Strange, that I specialize in gut problems.  In animals it is even more challenging since they present with different symptoms and are good at concealing their illness.  I am relieved to say that at this moment her condition is guarded and stable.  I am grateful to the ICU and big medicine because without it her condition would be most bleak.

 

Still,  as I have learned, never minimize the importance of a healthy gut and immune system.  Without either, things inevitably come to a crisis. 

 

I am hopeful Rainn will make a full recovery.  Please send positive thoughts our way.  I will pick up our wonderful blog just as soon as I can.

How an attitude of gratitude brings major health benefits?

An attitude of gratitude can foster major health benefits according to recent psychological research from Northeastern University and University of California, Riverside.  By focusing on positivity, researchers have discovered that participants experience better sleep, better moods overall with significantly less anxiety and depression, greater happiness and long term life satisfaction, and kinder behavior towards others even family members!

These studies have also shown that feeling grateful results in less aggressive behavior towards others even when provoked and a “Pay it Forward” towards others which has far reaching positive ripple effects.

I would sum all the research up as stress reduction!  Decreased anger, stress, hostility, lowered cortisol levels translates into better health, and less “angry liver syndrome” which can be so prevalent at the holidays.

How to turn on the gratitude in your life?  A few simple habits  help!   Each day start and end the day with 5 things you are grateful for.  When around strangers, difficult clients or family members make a point of noticing and commenting upon something positive about them.

Perform random acts of kindness. Self esteem rises when people feel good about themselves and their behavior.

 

What if you are just not feeling it ?? Read Dale Carnegie's: How to Win friends and Influence People, or watch It's a Wonderful Life.  Either should help get you in the spirit.
