The Negativity Cure-Part II

I have been a physician and healer for 16 years and I can attest to the fact that the habit of negative thinking is a very likely predictor of illness of all kinds in life.  It has incredible power to wreck health not to mention lives.  I would go so far to say that if one were never negative he would never be ill.

Also, as a physician I can also tell you that negative thinking is a great prognosticator of just who will or will not heal and how quickly.  I have known for years that some 70 to 80% of the people I see for initial visits will not heal even if they initially respond to treatment because they are just too negative.  They will quit treatment or create obstacles or even relapse because they are just too negative to receive healing.  It is not enjoyable being with these people.

Today I will discuss the most common root causes  and habits of negative thinking. Recognizing these patterns in yourself or others is the first step in eradicating them and getting a more joyfilled existence.

The most common mistake of negative thinkers is thinking and believing that negative thinking is realistic and somehow good.  Believing the worst and seeing the black isn't good its just well....negative.

Negative thinkers also engage in very black and white thinking.  The black thoughts become all or nothing and destroy joy which is found in life which is mostly subtle grays.

Another pattern is generalizing gloom.  If something goes wrong, it becomes everything instead of that specific instance or event.

Negative thinkers are not fair and balanced with regard to positive events in life. They tend to overemphasize only the negative.  In anyone's life, the truth is that much more good stuff happens then bad.  Negative thinkers do not recognize the good, even when it is front and center.

Negative thinkers also tend to internalize bad or unfortunate events by blaming themselves even in cases where this is clearly not the case.  This tends to leads to spirals of more negative thinking.

Lastly, negative thinkers tend to use their imagination to create fear and angst rather than happiness.

If you see yourself or a loved one in this article please consider coming in for help. I have been very successful in changing people's attitudes with homeopathics, meditation and flower essences if they are motivated to do so.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy is it right for YOU?

Bioidentical hormone formulations in measured doses (i.e., tailored to individual patients) may be obtained from a compounding pharmacy with a physician's prescription after careful testing. Bioidentical estrogen therapy has been utilized extensively in Europe and Japan for several years (Kano 2002).

Estriol. Estriol (E3) has shown beneficial effects in women at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Japanese scientists found that a group of menopausal women treated with E3 for 12 months had a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure (Takahashi 2000). Another placebo-controlled study demonstrated that E3 replacement for 30 weeks improved flow-mediated dilation (a measure of arterial relaxation) (Hayashi 2000). E3 accomplishes these effects by strongly activating nitric oxide signaling systems and stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques (Kano 2002).

E3 may further reduce cardiovascular risk through its beneficial effects on lipid profiles. One Japanese study found that E3 prevented a postmenopausal rise in total cholesterol while not inducing elevated triglyceride levels, a side effect frequently seen after treatment with conventional estrogen therapy (Itoi 2000). E3, in combination with a statin drug, can reduce carotid artery intima-media thickness (a measure of atherosclerosis) in postmenopausal women with elevated blood lipids (Yamanaka 2005).

E3 also increases bone mineral density, a vital parameter in post-menopausal women at risk for osteoporosis. In one study, women treated with E3 exhibited an increase in bone mineral density and improved climacteric (i.e., menopausal) symptoms with no increased risk of endometrial hyperplasia (Minaguchi 1996). In a second study, researchers treated postmenopausal and elderly women with either a combination of E3 and 1,000 mg/day of calcium lactate or 1,000 mg/day of calcium lactate alone. Bone mineral density significantly increased in women receiving E3 versus a decrease in those not receiving E3 (Nishibe 1996). In a summary statement, the researchers wrote, “the acceleration of bone turnover usually observed after menopause was prevented by treatment with E3 [estriol]” (Nozaki 1996).

E3 also supports sexual and urinary health. For example, one study showed that E3-treated women reported a 68% reduction in symptoms of incontinence compared to 16% in the placebo group (Dessole 2004). Women with recurrent urinary tract infections experienced a 91% reduction in infections following treatment with an intravaginal estriol cream compared to the placebo group (Raz 1993). Another study demonstrated that locally administered E3 therapy significantly increased the number of blood vessels surrounding the urethra, thereby improving its ability to maintain urine in the bladder until the desire to void the bladder is reached (Kobata 2008). The addition of E3 to standard therapy for prevention of urinary tract infections reduced the number of recurrences 11-fold, and the days of antibiotic therapy more than 12-fold in another study (Davidov 2009).

Stress incontinence refers to intermittent loss of urine with pelvic floor stress from laughing, coughing, etc. Pelvic floor muscle exercises are effective in reducing stress incontinence, and studies suggest that E3 adds substantially to the beneficial effect(s) (Ishiko 2001).

E3 can offer relief for women suffering from atrophic vaginitis, the symptoms of which include vaginal dryness, vaginal burning, and painful intercourse. After 4 weeks of treatment with an intravaginal estriol cream, researchers noted that “atrophy of vaginal epithelium and chronic vaginitis stopped or significantly decreased… The subjective complaints relating to the estrogen deficiency (vaginal burning and dryness, itching, dyspareunia [painful sex] and urinary dysfunctions) ceased. Side-effects and complications during the treatment were not found” (Koloszar 1995). More objective improvements to vaginal dryness and acidity have been demonstrated in recent studies (Chollet 2009).

Topical estriol creams applied to the face and neck can reduce many symptoms of aging skin (e.g., dryness and wrinkling). Animal studies demonstrate that estriol cream promotes collagen production and enhances skin's elasticity (Ozyazgan 2005).

Studies have also shown E3 to be effective in the treatment of menopausal symptoms. In one study, women being treated with varying doses of E3 for six months had decreased vasomotor symptoms of menopause (e.g., hot flashes). The improvements were found to be dose-dependent. There were no detrimental effects on uterine or breast tissue (Tzingounis 1978). Other studies have shown similar results with up to 71% of patients reporting elimination of hot flashes and sweating and 21% reporting a substantial reduction (Lauritzen 1987).

Progesterone. Progesterone complements and balances the impact of estrogen in aging women. Combined with estrogen, progesterone substantially improved the amount of time women with a history of heart attack or coronary artery disease could work out on a treadmill before reducing blood flow to the heart. Use of non-bioidentical progesterone produced no effect (Rosano 2000). Another mechanism by which progesterone enhances cardiovascular health is its ability to maintain or even increase HDL levels in women receiving estrogen replacement therapy (Bernstein 2010; Ottosson 1985; Jensen 1987).

Progesterone has a major role in relieving menopausal symptoms as well. Four head-to-head studies comparing progesterone to non-bioidentical synthetic progestogen (progestin) reported that women experienced greater satisfaction, improved quality of life, and fewer side effects when switched from progestin to progesterone (Hargrove 1989; Montplaisir 2001; Ryan 2001; Lindenfeld 2002). The beneficial effects of progesterone compared to non-bioidentical progestin included a 30% reduction in sleep problems, 50% reduction in anxiety, 60% reduction in depression, 25% reduction in menstrual bleeding, 40% reduction in cognitive difficulties, and 30% improvement in sexual function. Eighty percent of women in the study reported overall satisfaction with the bioidentical progesterone formulation (Fitzpatrick 2000).

What You Need to Know: Bioidentical Hormones

  • Non-bioidentical hormones are chemically different than natural hormones produced within the body. The use of non-bioidentical estrogen and synthetic progestin in the WHI trial was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, heart attack, venous blood clot and stroke.
  • Non-bioidentical, oral conventional hormone replacement therapy is associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer.
  • Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones produced naturally within the body. The body does not distinguish between supplemental bioidentical hormones and the hormones produced within the body. As a result, bioidentical hormones are properly utilized, and are able to be naturally metabolized and excreted from the body.
  • Current literature suggests that bioidentical progesterone is associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer.
  • A scientific literature review suggests that bioidentical progesterone may be superior to progestins in treating menopausal symptoms. Estriol (see below) is also highly effective in the treatment of menopausal symptoms.
  • Research on bioidentical progesterone has shown beneficial effects (e.g., decreasing the risk of blood clots, protecting against atherosclerosis, and maintaining healthy HDL levels) on cardiovascular health.
  • Three major types of estrogen are produced naturally in a woman's body: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3).
  • Estriol has been shown to improve bone density, promote youthful skin, enhance urinary health, and improve sexual function.

Testosterone replacement therapy can help older men deficient in the hormone reduce their risks of heart disease, diabetes, and death, according to new research presented this week at ENDO 08, the annual meeting of The Endocrine Society.

''The goal of testosterone treatment is to keep the levels within normal range," says Farid Saad, director of scientific affairs for Bayer Schering Pharma in Berlin. Saad presented two of the studies at the meeting, held in San Francisco. Bayer Schering Pharma makes several testosterone products.

Low levels of testosterone are common with age, Saad says, occurring in about 18% of 70-year-olds. Low levels of testosterone, he says, are associated with the metabolic syndrome -- a cluster of risk factors such as abnormal cholesterol and high blood pressure that boost risk of heart diseasestroke, and type 2 diabetes as well as other risks to health.

In the studies, Saad and his colleagues found that testosterone replacement therapy reduced the metabolic syndrome risk factors and did so in a similar way in all the age ranges studied.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy and Heart Disease Risks

In the first study, Saad's team looked at 95 men, aged 34 to 69, with low levels of testosterone.

All had metabolic syndrome. Those who have this diagnosis must have three of five risk factors: increased waist circumference, low "good" cholesterol or HDL, high triglycerides, elevated blood pressure, and elevated blood sugar.

"We treated them for at least a year," he tells WebMD. Every three months, they measured cholesterol, waist circumference, and other parameters.

Testosterone replacement was given as a long-acting injection, every three months. The same product is not yet available in the U.S., Saad says, although other types are.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy: Test Results

"We saw a consistent improvement of the parameters of metabolic syndrome," Saad says. The men were not given a special diet or exercise program.

The supplemental testosterone reduced total cholesterol, "bad" LDL cholesteroltriglycerides, and body mass index while improving "good"HDL cholesterol. The men lost their pot bellies, Saad says. "What we see after 12 months is a reduction in two or three trouser sizes, three or four inches off the waist. We see a reduction by one-fourth to one-third of their total cholesterol."

No adverse effects were reported, he says.

While hormone replacement therapy for women has been found to be associated with increased risks of heart disease and other problems, Saad doesn't foresee that will be the case with testosterone replacement. "There are fundamental differences between hormone replacement in women and testosterone treatment in men," he tells WebMD.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy: No Age Effects?

In a second study, Saad divided the same 95 men into three groups, based on age: less than 57, 57 to 63, and older than 63.

They found the older men and the younger men had similar improvement in their risk factors.

 Follow-up

"There are some precautions with testosterone supplementation," Saad tells WebMD. "We need to monitor the prostate."

"It is well known that with prostate cancer, the cancer is usually dependent on testosterone. Prostate cancer is a slow-growing tumor." Cancerof the gland must be ruled out before starting supplements, he says. He also advises routine prostate checkups while on treatment.

A test to monitor red blood cell formation, called a hematocrit, is needed, too. "Testosterone increases red blood cells," he says. In excess, it can theoretically boost heart attack or stroke risk.

Proper Care Can Prolong Your Pet's Life

Want to extend your pet's lifespan not to mention healthspan? Keep an eye on  your dog or cat's dental health because some experts believe proper care in this area can prolong a pet's life by as much as 25%. Therefore, by  careful monitoring at home and  with regular veterinary care,  you can play an active role in extending your years together.

Cats and dogs are particularly prone to various tooth and gum diseases. It's estimated that nearly half the cat population over the age of 3 has one kind of dental disorder or another - 85% of felines in this category may suffer from bad gums alone. As many as 80% of dogs aged 1 to 3 are thought to have signs of periodontal disease that requires treatment to areas around the tooth.

In addition to treating the tooth area, a holistic practitioner will likely view your pet's periodontal disease as a symptom of a more subtle health imbalance. Many times, dental problems are indications of immune disorders.  The focus of treatment will be to build overall the animal's overall health, rather than just concentrating on the immediate problem.

Symptoms of Dental Disease in Dogs and Cats

The best way to become familiar with your cat or dog's mouth is to eyeball the patient!  Normal teeth in both cats and dogs should be white or just a little yellow, with gums light pink and smooth, except those in breeds with pigmented gums, such as Chows. Gums should definitely NOT be red, swollen or cobblestone in appearance.

Your sense of smell is a GREAT way to discover the existence of  periodontal disease, which is the most common infectious (bacteria-caused) disease in cats and dogs. All pets have bad breath to some degree. But those with periodontal disease emit particularly disagreeable odors from their mouth, caused by bacteria and their toxins destroying their gums and teeth.

Gum disease begins when bacteria in the form of plaque inflammation eats away at the supportive gum tissue of the teeth. When plaque is not removed either by brushing, cleaning or an animal eating the right food, the mineral salts in saliva form hard crusts called calculus or tartar over the plaque. Mild plaque can be seen as a filmy, yellowish build-up at the base of the teeth. Heavy tarter is thick and rock-hard. It may be brown, yellow or even greenish in tint and will break off in chunks when pried loose with your thumbnail.

The formation of tartar irritates gum tissue, causing redness and then swelling, known as gingivitis. If neglected, gingivitis turns into periodontitis. This is a much more serious condition and can lead to progressive infection, inflammation and loss of the tiny ligaments that bind the gums to the teeth, as well as bone recession and loose teeth.

Dental problems are troublesome in their own right, but they often are manifestations of other serious problems such as immune disorders or even heart disease.

Links to Immune Disorders and Cardiovascular Diseases

Chronic oral infections are not confined to the mouth because there is a risk of bacteria being swallowed and then spreading to other parts and organs of the body. The immune system is also subjected to a constant burden and over several years, and even months, these toxins can cause liver, kidney, lung and gastrointestinal disease or organ failure.

Lymphocytic plasmacytic stomatitis (LPS) is thought to be an autoimmune disease of the gums and lining of the mouth and throat. Although the symptoms may appear the same, do not mistake this disease with chronic gingivitis which is almost always due to tartar build-up.

The first thing to understand about LPS is that this disease can be a secondary symptom of a greater underlying viral infection such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, Feline Leukemia, Feline Herpes (aka Rhinotracheitis) or Calicivirus, or it may be an immune response gone awry. Current theories are that the cat develops an allergy to tartar. Always have your cat tested for FeLV and FIV if faced with this condition.

Dental disease has also been linked to heart conditions. Recent studies have shown that bacteria is often found on the abnormal heart valves of animals with heart disease. These bacteria were identical to that cultured from infected teeth and gums. It is no coincidence that many animals with heart disease also suffer from periodontal problems. If neglected, periodontal disease can cause a heart infection called bacterial endocarditis, which is life-threatening as well as difficult and expensive to treat.

When your pet is suffering from dental problems, ask your vet whether antioxidants and other immune strengthening vitamins will help your pet.

Maintaining healthy mouths in pets!

There's no substitute for brushing. It's the most important thing you can do for your pet's dental health and the process is even more critical if the animal already has gum disease. Talk to your veterinarian about proper brushing techniques.

Diet is also crucial to maintain good dental health. Remove items that tend to stick to teeth. Natural, raw food diets can be helpful to dogs. Encourage recreational chewing by your dog.

Cats, on the other hand, often don't receive food that's good for their dental health. In the process of eating prey in the wild, cats devoured fur, hair and tough elastic tissue which had a natural brushing effect on their teeth. But today's domesticated cat doesn't eat food with such "built-in" toothbrushes. Often the food is soft and they need something harder that offers abrasiveness without damaging gum tissue. Kibble has a consistency that offers a brushing benefit before it is mashed into mush. While not a treatment for periodontal disease, it can help as part of a prevention strategy.

If your pet is prone to dental problems, ask your veterinarianor practitioner about an immune support product to help battle against bacteria or viral infections.

Natural CURES for Dental Disease in Dogs and Cats

The whole health of a pet, rather than just the symptoms of a specific disease, is the foundation of any holistic health-care program.

Natural treatments for dental care often include antioxidants.  The antioxidant Coenzyme Q10 may help periodontal disease by reducing the size and improving the health of periodontal pockets in the gums, as well as decreasing inflammation. Other antioxidant supplements, especially the vitamins A, B complex, C and E with zinc and manganese will strengthen periodontal tissue.  One product I like is by Thorne Research and contains the right nutrients in a convenient formula.

Probiotics and digestive enzymes can be helpful to dogs with chronic mouth trouble, though it may take at least a  month or two to see any improvement.

If your animal is very resistant to brushing, I really like this natural product for removing even heavy tartar and bacteria. It is easy to use and pets don't seem to mind it much at all.

Liver Spots Image: Imgard.com

Sun Spots or Liver spots

tend to show up on individuals after age 40. According to western medicine and dermatologic experts, they have nothing whatsoever to do with liver function and occur solely because of sun exposure.

I am pretty certain I do not agree with this in all cases as I have seen them occur in people who completely shun the sun and DO in fact have liver problems. These spots have then reversed without any topical treatments when in fact the liver disorder has resolved.

This article however pertains to sun, liver or age spots caused by sun exposure.  These areas of damage are caused by pigmentation that is concentrated in these spots due to oxidative damage.

The best cure is prevention and that involves minimizing sun exposure and choosing a safe sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays like CLIMB ON! Available in our store FREE SHIPPING!.

Lasers, peeling and dermabrasion are some ways to remove these unsightly spots after the fact but are very expensive and may involve repeated treatments.

Natural solutions then become a very viable option.

Kojic acid and melasma

When kojic acid is applied to the skin in concentrated amounts, the chemicals in the ingredient work on the melanocytes, interfering with the production of melanin the dark pigment in age spots. In addition to its skin-lightening abilities, kojic acid is classified as an antioxidant. This class of nutrients has the ability to counteract the effects of particles in the air called free radicals, which have the potential to cause oxidative damage to the skin cells. By limiting the effects of free radicals, Kojic acid helps to prevent the formation of signs of aging that occur when the cells that produce the skin's vital structural proteins become damaged.

Kojic acid Gel

Kojic acid is also an antibacterial agent, meaning that it interferes with the processes that bacteria cells must perform to thrive and reproduce. By disrupting these processes, Kojic acid causes the death of bacteria. Some dermatologists recommend the use of mild concentrations of Kojic acid for addressing acne blemishes, which are often caused by bacterial infections in the pores.  months, preventing melanin formation.

LIGHTEN UP!

Enriched with Kojic Acid & Niacinamides, Sage and Salvia Extracts ,Bearberry Extract, this gel  is formulated to even skin tone and effectively lighten pigmentation by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for producing excess melanin.  It has been shown to reduce the appearance of scars, age spots, sunspots, and discoloration associated with acne or photo-damaged skin. Niacinamides have an inhibitory effect on the transfer of melanosomes to skin cells, thus it can interrupt the process that causes irregular pigmentation to form.

Image: How To Practice Transcendental Meditation . Org

With stress levels ever escalating,  what if I told you that just ONE health practice could alleviate stress, relieve depression and anxiety, improve self awareness, mindfulness, improve concentration and protect your heart and immune systems?  What about changing your BRAIN?

Well here it is!

According to a recent study this ONE FREE thing can!

Researchers from Harvard University and the University of Sienna found that the powers of meditation move beyond cultivating one's self-awareness, improvement of concentration and protection of the heart and immune system -- it can actually alter the physiology of the human brain. Consistent that is DAILY practice can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression in people who often need it most.

In this new study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, the scientists selected 24 subjects who had never meditated before and guided them through an 8-week meditation course. Each participant completed a two-and-a-half hour session each week, where they learned about various components and styles of a meditation practice. Outside of the weekly session, they each meditated for 45 minutes daily.

Data gathered from the actual  MRIs of the participants conducted before and after the meditation program, along with psychological evaluations, revealed that the subjects experienced a thickening in the part of the brain responsible for emotions and perception. Such changes strengthen the body's physiological resilience against worry, anxiety and depression.

For the increasing number of us struggling with  overwhelming demands of our lives, reserving a little time each day to tune into ourselves might be a wonderful idea.  It takes a bit of prioritizing in an already-busy schedule, but the proven benefits are known to be well worth the effort.

I will be offering an 8 week Meditation for Beginners Class in the Fall after Labor Day.  If you are interested in receiving more information about the course, PLEASE contact me: doctaryn@aol.com for more information.  It will include materials for home practice.  Let us know.  Meanwhile, Visit my meditation room!

Most of you have learned, I truly hope, that pesticides are toxic and that they lead to disruptions of the endocrine system. This has been linked to MANY, many illnesses. Now, a brand new study links pesticides to the most prevalent degenerative illness in the U.S.

  Image: GreenPlanetEthics.com

Pesticide exposure, not obesity as a single factor was found to contribute to increased cardiovascular disease risk and inflammation in premenopausal women, according to this new study published in the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

This new study looked at the effects of exposure to polychlorinated pesticides such as DDT. Although DDT was banned in many countries in the 1970s, it remains widespread in the environment and food supply.

DDT was one of the first recognized endocrine-disrupting chemicals, according to the introductory guide to endocrine-disrupting chemicals published by the Endocrine Society and IPEN.

DDT and related pesticides are known as environmental estrogens because they mimic and therefore interfere with the functions of the hormone estrogen. Research has found DDT exposure is linked to birth defects, reduced fertility and increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, all of which have caught like wildfire in the U.S.

"After the body breaks down DDT along with similar pesticides, chemical remnants called metabolites accumulate in women's fat tissue," states one of the study's authors, Diana Teixeira, PhD student of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto in Porto, Portugal. "When higher amounts of these environmental estrogens collect in the fat tissue, it can compromise the protective effect the body's natural estrogen has on a premenopausal woman's heart health. This leaves women at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and inflammation."

The study analyzed the amount of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in fat tissue and blood samples from 121 obese women who underwent bariatric surgery at S. João Hospital in Porto. Among the participants, 73 were classified as premenopausal and 48 were postmenopausal. The researchers tested the participants' fasting blood glucose and cholesterol. Using the Framingham cardiovascular risk score, the researchers assessed the women's 10-year risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Researchers found that among premenopausal women, women with higher concentrations of environmental estrogens in their visceral fat tissue from the belly were more likely to have higher average blood sugar levels. Among premenopausal women, those with higher levels of environmental estrogens in their blood tended to have more inflammation and faced a greater risk of cardiovascular disease according to the Framingham scale.

"Our findings show that endocrine-disrupting chemicals

tend to aggravate all the complications of obesity, including inflammation and cardiovascular disease risk, in premenopausal women," Teixeira said. "Measuring environmental estrogen levels may help physicians identify women who are at risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic disease so they can take preventative action."

Preventive action is avoiding the contaminants in non-organic foods. Collectively, I cannot think of a more worthwhile cause than protecting our food supply and planet earth.

Cancer Cell Image: SangerAC.UK

Most people have absolutely NO idea that their gut comprises 70% of their immune system. This occurs as a vast network of lymphatic system known as the Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue of GALT.

Now researchers have learned that:

A bile acid – a cholesterol-derived bioactive lipid, lithocholic acid  has been recently suggested to cause considerable lifespan extension in yeast.  Produced by the liver, it is a potent cancer fighter!

Vladimir Titorenko, from Concordia University (Canada), and colleagues have revealed that when entering a cancer cell, lithocholic acid attacks the cells' mitochondria to cause cell death.  Submitting that: “[lithocholic acid] exhibits a substantial cytotoxic or cancer cell killing effects in cultured cancer cells derived from different tissues and organisms,” the study authors posit that: “The molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the robust anti-aging and anti-tumor effects of lithocholic acid have emerged.”

Disruptions in gut microbiology, liver or gallbladder disease or even high intake of dietary inflammatory fats may disrupt this process.

This is definitely a very important finding and another HUGE reason to get your gut in tip top shape! It is unknown whether medications affect this bile acid but I suspect they would.

What do Obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression chronic allergies, hostilility,  defiance, perfectionism and other personality traits and disorders all have in common? They are disorders that could all be caused by a process of undermethylation – which is a result of elevated histamine levels.

Slightly elevated histamine levels may result in strong motivation, attention to detail, or wonderful detail and organizational abilities, but these postive traits become disordered with increased histamine levels and can present as obsessive compulsive behavior, perfectionism, over-competitiveness or other behavioral problems.

An adult who is an undermethylator, might in fact achieve levels of success, but may also be an over-achiever who struggles with addictions or other compulsive behaviours. Children may be self-motivated and goal-oriented, but may have problems with authority, social skills, or develop an obsession for certain activities.

The biochemistry of undermethylation:

“Methylation” is a process where chemicals called “methyl groups” are added to various elements of DNA, proteins and other molecules to help keep them in good working condition. Histamine is one of the chemicals which requires methylation to be metabolised correctly.

If histamine is “undermethylated”, it can stagnate and build up in the system. When blood contains high levels of histamine the excess histamine is stored in the blood basophils (a type of white blood cell involved with inflammatory reactions in your body) and brain neurons.

This in turn can result in low levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine – the chemicals responsible for making us feel good. Despite a high energy drive, those suffering from excess histamine can often also show symptoms of depression due to low serotonin levels.

Treatment options for Undermethylation

Undermethylation has a tendency towards disrupting other nutrients such as: low levels of calcium, magnesium, methionine and B6, and an excess of folic acid, so dietary changes and correct supplementation are the key to correcting undermethylation.

Of course, before rushing out to stock up on vitamins and minerals, it is important to correctly diagnose undermethylation which can be done with a diagnostic blood test available to identify histamine levels – one marker for the methylation process. The correct dosage and combination of nutrients can then be assessed based on your specific needs and what else is going on in your body, and progress can be monitored not only through symptoms, but also blood testing.

Contact us if you would like more information regarding testing and treatment of high histamine levels.

Image and  historic information from Hippocrates.com

Hippocrates medical theories and conclusions are based on his data and research and demonstrated  that disease was a natural process; that the signs and symptoms of a disease were caused by the natural reactions of the body to a disease process; and that the chief role of the physician was to aid the natural resistance of the body to overcome the metabolic imbalance and restore health and harmony to the organism.

Hippocrates was born on the island of Cos, off the southwest coast of Asia Minor, or present-day Turkey, around 460 B.C.  His father was a physician-priest in the Asclepion at Cos, and his family could trace its lineage back to the legendary Asclepius.  Hippocrates lived a very long life and died at a ripe old age in the town of Larissa in Thessaly.

History of Hippocratic Medicine

Physiology and pathology theory within Hippocratic medicine was based on the Four Humors.  A united harmony between all four humors working in tandem was necessary for good health.

The Four Humors are:

Pneuma - the Breath or Vital Force, and the Innate Heat, which were suffused into the blood from the lungs via the heart, gave the blood the power to sustain life.

Hippocrates saw pepsis, or an orderly, balanced, harmonious digestion and metabolism of the Four Humors as being essential to all good health.  In disorders of pepsis Hippocrates saw the origin of most disease.  I must add that we are driven home this point time and time again in Naturopathic College.  Being an original thinker, I did not accept the tenets and wisdom of this truth until practicing for about three years.  Now, daily I see the truth that if something is awry with digestion, fix that first because EVERYTHING else will improve as well.

I have gleaned both personally and from thousands of patients that digestion IS the cornerstone of good health, and by this I mean good health in every respect, bodily, emotionally, spiritually and mentally.  Daily, I am fortunate enough to see people transformed completely by healing their digestion and restoring harmony to their bodies. This is why I chose to specialize in naturopathic treatment of digestive disorders.

While  Hippocrates' anatomical knowledge was basic his profound insights into human physiology and the soundness of his reasoning still stand.  His surgical techniques for dislocations of the hip and jaw were actually unsurpassed until the nineteenth century.

In therapeutics, Hippocrates saw the physician as the servant and facilitator of Nature.  This is also true in Naturopathic Medicine.  All medical treatment is aimed at enabling the natural resistance of the organism to prevail and overcome illness, to bring about recovery.
In treatments he prescribed, Hippocrates was very sensible, pragmatic and flexible in his approach, favoring conservatism and moderation over radical or extreme measures.  Bloodletting, which was much abused at other times in much of medical history, was used only rarely by Hippocrates, and even then, only applied conservatively.
Hippocrates placed great emphasis on strengthening and building up the body's inherent resistance to disease.  For this, he prescribed diet, gymnastics, exercise, massage, hydrotherapy and sea bathing.
Hippocrates was a great believer in dietary measures in the treatment of disease.  He prescribed a basic, light diet during the crisis stage of an acute illness, and a liquid diet during the treatment of fevers and wounds.
Hippocratic medicine was constitutionally based, so its approach to diagnosis and treatment was quite flexible.  As a holistic healing system, Hippocratic medicine treated the patient, and not disease.
Hippocrates was the first physician to systematically classify disease based on points of similarity and contrast between them.  He originated the disciplines of etiology and pathology.  By systematically classifying diseases, Hippocrates placed their diagnosis and treatment on a sounder footing.

Unfortunately, the current status has moved very far from ancient knowledge and wisdom of nature, those relationships and the body as a whole.  Instead, people have more and more "information" provided by more and more "experts"  and less and less wisdom regarding how things REALLY work in the natural world.  It is truly an obstacle in helping  so many of them.

If you glean just one thing from this article understand that there is NO health without proper digestion and assimilation.  A great diet, exercise and all the rest will not take you far with a digestive system that is not working optimally.  While it is not a simple process to remedy this, it is by far the most important health adventure you will ever undertake.
