Many of my new clients are a bit surprised when I ask them to stick out their tongues so I can examine it with respect to their health!  After many years of training in both naturopathy and also Chinese medicine, I have honed excellent diagnostic skills which gives me great insight as to what is going on with a patient.  While tongue diagnosis is a wonderful skill it takes many years of training and practice to master and is beyond the scope of this blog. Today, just for illustrative purpose I will discuss the most common tongue presentation and what it means.

A fissured tongue is the most common finding in an integrative examination of a client. A fissured tongue is also the most common oral finding in patients with psoriasis. Other names applied to the fissured tongue are scrotal or plicated tongue. Erythema migrans (geographic tongue) is often associated with fissured tongue as well.

Figure 1: Fissured tongue. Photo at left is courtesy of Alyse Shockey, ND, RDH. Photo at right is courtesy of Dr. Carolyn Bentley.

Additionally, certain medical disorders are associated with fissuring of the tongue such as Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) (consisting of a triad of components: fissuring, orofacial edema, and facial nerve palsy), Down syndrome, acromegaly, and Sjögren's syndrome. Electrolyte imbalances in saliva and mild hemolytic abnormalities have been noted as well (Eisen and Lynch, 1998). All of the above disease states can usually be eliminated as possibilities because of the strong clinical characteristics of each.

Intraoral findings: A chief complaint is that of malodor and discoloration associated with deep fissuring of the tongue due to the bacteria and food particles that become embedded in the grooves and cracks. The trapped particles may lead to inflammation and often cause discomfort/burning in the patient.

These more subtle patterns usually are noted during dental exams, and the health-care provider will offer reassurance to the patient that the condition is benign. In most cases, the tongue exhibits a central groove with smaller grooves radiating from the center line. Some practitioners view the fissuring of the tongue more as a sign of other underlying issues with the total body.

What do we know about the fissured tongue?

The literature suggests that the fissured tongue is relatively common. In fact, it's so common that it is not noted in many clinical exams. Both aging and local environmental factors may also contribute to the small and deep grooves that become noticeable.

A Holistic Approach: In Chinese medicine, the tongue is considered to be the window to total body health. A Chinese medicine practitioner will take a thorough lifestyle history, a medical history, and then the first element of the body that is examined is the tongue. Integrative medicine practitioners will link the tongue to other areas of the body such as the liver, heart, bladder, spleen, and intestines. Many such organs are associated with key areas of the tongue.

I usually advise patients regarding the status of the color, shape, thickness, and coating of the tongue with regard to their total health. I usually combine with pulse diagnosis.  A tongue details far more long term conditions than the pulse.  As with Chinese medicine and integrative approaches, the naturopathic practitioner views the tongue as exhibiting possible health issues that may need monitoring with regard to the total body.

If I encountered with a fissured tongue such as the example depicted in Figure 1. it would indicate to me that  long-term period of deficiency in the body similar to a period of drought over a mass of land had occurred. The ground will become extremely dry and start to crack. The tongue topography will look the same way. The deeper the cracks, the more chronic the condition of the tongue. The body is experiencing dehydration and long-term adrenal stress.

Typically, the tongue is swollen in this state and the pressure causes cracking. Usually swollen tongues will indicate digestive problems. Regardless, once the underlying issues have been addressed, the fissuring should begin to diminish. I have seen this often.

The color of the tongue is a useful tool for monitoring the improvements or possibly decline in a patient's condition. The tongue's body color helps determine chronic conditions, and the coating helps determine acute conditions. She correlates this with the patient who has flaming red gingiva vs. pale, pink tissue.  Flaming red tongues indicate heat in the body.  Mottled tongues will indicate which organs are being impacted by the inflammation.

I always counsel patients to address lifestyle factors that may be preventing the body's natural ability to heal itself.  pH, for one example is an important aspect in rebuilding and detoxifying the body. Since thiscondition has been chronic and has taken a long time to reach the current level found clinically, the patient must realize that the process of healing will take some time as well. She usually will suggest a "live food supplement" to make the content readily available to the body.

The most common items missing in the body are minerals, proper fats such as essential fatty acids (EFAs) and greens. The diet is extremely important, and the patient needs to increase fresh foods and water. Once the factors associated with lifestyle are addressed, the body will begin to heal on its own, and the fissuring will start to diminish.

Conclusions: Even though the fissured tongue is considered a benign condition with no treatment needed, the body is perhaps telling us something that needs to be addressed. Assisting patients in trying to determine some lifestyle changes that may be beneficial for total health is certainly something that we need to consider.

To heal conditions like this from a lifestyle perspective,  I am a firm advocate of decreasing your toxic world by cleaning up your environment and air quality. Many allergy sufferers will tell you that their health improved dramatically  when they removed carpeting, covered beds with "dust mite" proof covers, discarded old mattresses, and began to use a neti pot when needed to clear nasal passages. These factors often allow a patient to stop or reduce taking their daily allergy medications and begin to breathe clean air again. Dust and dirt need to be removed from our world, especially in areas where we sleep.

Then, fresh food sources instead of the processed foods that are commonly eaten can make a huge difference in our health. If you would not place an ingredient in your mouth, don't use it on your skin!

  • If the label lists more than five ingredients, you do not need it!
  • If your great grandmother would not recognize what you are about to eat, don't eat it!
  • Do not buy your meals in the same place that you fuel your car!
Get a GOOD diagnosis from people who know more than you do.  There is a reason experts exist....it is HARD to be objective about your own health and situation.  Call us anytime to find out what your tongue says about YOUR health!

Now food producers have completely stripped away your freedom to opt-out of eating genetically modified foods.

  • Chips and other snacks… full of GMOs.
  • Baked goods and packaged meals… they have GMOs too.
  • Cooking from scratch? You still can't get away from GMOs. They're in flour. They're in whole-grains. They're in meat. They're in fruit. They're in vegetables.

Do some due diligence... you will find that they are everywhere!

GMOs now exist in  even  healthy and organic foods: You've no doubt heard how grass-fed beef is significantly better than “normal” meat. Or how grass-fed beef has a superior taste and far more nutrition. And that's all true.

…Except now we have a bigger problem:

Grass has been genetically modified too! Cows will eat this grass, and big food producers sell the beef to you as “grass-fed” and “all-natural”. But, it's anything but that! The pesticides from the GMO grass accumulate in the cow, leaving you with toxic meat.

So what can you do? How can you stay healthy? How can you fight the damage these GMOs cause to your body? Well, let's talk about exactly how you can “undo” the effect of these GMOs.

“Eating organic” now just isn't enough!

Birds, bees, and wind spread GMO seeds and pollen miles away. These air-bourne seeds go on to contaminate other farm fields… even those farmed organically or without pesticides.

Just recently, researchers found genetically modified corn growing “intermixed” with heirloom, native varieties of corn in a remote village — high in the mountains of Mexico. The nearest farm that ever had any GMO crops was in a valley over 60 miles away!

In other words, even the safe foods we recommended you rely on… may not actually be that safe!

So if you can't fully avoid GMOs, you need to do something to counteract the damage they cause (especially in your children). You need something that ensures their bodies create new, healthy cells faster than the GMOs can destroy them. Superfoods like Acai, Chorella, Spirulina, and beet root are some common ones . Maybe you've even heard of some of them before. Anyways, these superfoods are packed with healthy vitamins and minerals.  Our Green's First product contains 49 different superfoods.  We have FREE samples in our office so please request some!  These foods help your body to detoxify these chemicals the moment they hit.  The second way is to grow an extremely healthy and proactive gut and immune system for the same reason.

What's great about this is that these superfoods guarantee your child gets the “building blocks” it needs to repair and replace cells damaged by GMOs.

If you're a mother, you know how just important it is for kids to get proper nutrition. And these superfoods are full of all the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, Omega-3 essential fatty acids, and antioxidants that…

  • Flood their body with energy so they can play, grow, and learn
  • Kick their metabolism into high gear (so they can keep up with other kids)
  • Sweep away the toxins in your body… leaving them feeling lively and alert

These “Superfoods” are great at what they do but there's even a better option.  This option is called YES!  According to the FES society this formula was developed during the Chernoble disaster.  According to Patricia Kaminski this formula results in an adaptive response to the various environmental insults we experience such as all forms of geopathic stress, residual effects of past exposure, dysfunctional immune response and allergic hypersensitivities of all kinds.  While no license to ignore your lifestyle, I do believe it can be extremely advantageous as an accoutrement to a great lifestyle in terms of mitigating the things we cannot control in the environment.  Daily usage is recommended for some time with then occasional use.  Let us know if we can help you with this or any other matter.  Best of Health!

GREAT NEWS: Beginning Friday September 11 we will be open from 2-5!  Please stop in and pick up a NEW product catalogue or product samples

If you have chronic symptoms of vaginal dryness which have not responded to our recommended vaginal suppositories in part I of this series, http://www.apple-a-day-clinic.com/15.html?m8:post=a-natural-cure-for-vaginal-dryness,  it may be the case that you have an estrogen deficiency, which can lead to vaginal dryness and predispose you to frequent urinary tract infections (UTI's).  This is a common situation which I see frequently in my clinic.

Some of my clients have then had great success with  a bio identical estriol vaginal cream to help vaginal irritation, dryness, and frequent UTI's (cystitis). It may be all you need for your vaginal dryness and UTI's.

Estriol (E3) is a bioidentical hormone that is produced in women's bodies in large amounts by the placenta during pregnancy and in relatively small amounts by the liver and other fat tissue. Sometimes called the "forgotten estrogen," estriol is considered to be the most therapeutic estrogen for the vaginal lining, cervix and vulvar tissues, but exerts only a weak effect elsewhere in the body. Estriol is quite good at "plumping up" these delicate tissues to reverse vaginal dryness, irritation and atrophy.  This is available in our store  or from a compounding pharmacy, usually at much higher cost.

A second, stronger form of estrogen known as estradiol (E2) is also sometimes prescribed to treat inflammation of the vagina (atrophic vaginitis). Bioidentical estradiol is commercially available in regular pharmacies in the form of vaginal cream (brand name Estrace), vaginal tablets (Vagifem), and an insertable vaginal ring (Estring, which needs to be changed every three months). Bioidentical estradiol is also available from compounding pharmacies with a prescription from your M.D.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, one of the above bioidentical options may be just right for you. You will need to work with your health care provider for a while to get the right dosage. One advantage to using compounded bioidentical hormones is that your healthcare provider can customize your dose, combining hormones as necessary, expressly to meet your needs. Women past menopause should usually combine estrogen with progesterone therapy.  Full scale hormonal testing is available to test the adrenals as well as the sex hormones for around $450.   Please schedule an appointment if you have questions or would like testing. You can also visit the bioidentical hormone section of my natural pharmacy.

We have just developed our own brand products beginning with the estriol and probiotics as well as many other wonderful supplements.  Please stop in or call us and request a catalogue of our offerings.

Best of Health!

Weary of expensive not to mention PAINFUL dental work? Dental health is also a direct indication of the health of your internal organs. Besides a beautiful smile, it is important to get to the root-- HA that again -- of various dental disorders. Naturopathic care can help strengthen teeth and gums naturally. With the application of specific dietary and herbal recommendations, loose and decaying teeth can be strengthened and healed. By practicing purposeful oral hygiene with a few basic ingredients, chronic dental problems can be economically resolved and your whole health improved naturally.

Dietary choices for beautiful healthy teeth!

A healthful diet is the first line of attack against both  gum disease and tooth decay. A chinese medicine known as pearl contains  ALL minerals such as calcium and silica  vital for repairing and rebuilding tooth structure. The herbs oatstraw, horsetail, and nettle are all excellent dietary sources of silica. Vitamin C, D, and K as well as Coenzyme Q-10 are also important for gum health and tooth strength. Vitamin C helps to support the collagen network of the gums. A deficiency of this vitamin will lead to tender gums that are susceptible to bacteria, leading to periodontal disease and tooth loss. Coenzyme Q-10 provides fuel directly to gums.  For foods that help to cleanse problem-causing plaque, focus on crunchy choices like celery, romaine lettuce, and seeds. Sesame seeds are especially beneficial for healthy teeth. High in calcium, they help maintain bone around teeth and gums. They are an ancient Chinese remedy as they bolster health of the kidney which is in charge of the structure of the body namely, bones and teeth. Soaking, dehydrating, and grinding the seeds further enhances the bioavailability of nutrients. For safer sweeteners that will not promote decay, use stevia and xylitol. Also, limit acid-forming foods such as citrus, coffee, chocolate, soda, and meat. Needless to say, all processed foods will weaken your body and therefore teeth.

Natural therapies for STRESSED teeth

Chronic inflammation of the gums is a TELLTALE sign of longterm gut ecology problems. It will be impossible to solve this problem without testing and resolving the underlying cause which is a bacterial imbalance in the GUT.  This problem will result in plaque regardless of diet, inflammation of the gums, and weakening of the tooth structure and bone due to improper assimilation of nutrients.  I encourage you to investigate this problem and resolve this health problem as it will lead to many more benefits over your lifespan.

Commercial toothpaste, including natural, fluoride-free brands, contain glycerin which coats the teeth and prevents remineralization. This weakens teeth over time, leading to decay and darkening. Baking soda and sea salt are both safe alternatives as is tooth soap.

Oil pulling can also be beneficial for some people

Deep clean teeth and gums with oil. Instructions according to Earthclinic.com:

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out.

Herbalists have long recommended certain plants and oils to nurture strong teeth and gums. By combining this wisdom with a dental-friendly diet, a healthy smile can be confidently restored.

Hi, I will post the article on natural tips for healthy teeth next week but I saw this and knew that many of you would be very interested in this obscure piece of interesting research!  We will pick up our normally scheduled articles next Wednesday!

According to a new small study by the Weizmann Institute of Science, children with autism might experience smells differently from children who have typical development.

Researchers say a smell test could help detect children with autism. "We can identify autism and its severity with meaningful accuracy within less than 10 minutes using a test that is completely non-verbal and entails no task to follow," researcher Noam Sobel informs us.

The study measured the sniff response of children to pleasant and unpleasant odors. Kids without autism usually adjust their sniffing very quickly - within about 305 milliseconds - while children diagnosed with autism reacted much slower.

No doubt this will prove interesting to many clinicians and parents hoping for a non invasive, simple way to identify children at risk.

Best of Health!

DRY, Brittle Breaking Hair...What to do about it!

DRY scalp, dry hair and hair breakage are often the first signs of hair loss and other health issues.

As a young child , and most of my life , I had very dry brittle hair, like STRAW that was fragile and would break. It just came out of my head that way.  It amazes my hairdresser and friends who have known me for awhile to see how luxurious thick  and healthy my hair has become!

Apart from many other possible causes, brittle hair may be a symptom of, or aggravated by, deficiency of certain nutrient(s).  This could be a direct result of the lack of the nutrient, or indirectly, when the deficiency causes conditions such as hypothyroidism, which leads to symptoms that include dry brittle hair.  It can also be a sign of chronic inflammation at the gut level. This I see most often. This was also my problem since I was given many antibiotics in early childhood.

The  most important hair, skin and nail vitamins that may therefore be helpful in the treatment of dry hair are tabled below, together with corresponding foods for healthy hair. Still be aware that almost ANY nutritional deficiency can cause dryness as a symptom.  It is therefore definitely key to get to the actual ROOT-no pun intended of the problem.

If dry brittle hair is also accompanied by dry skin, brittle nails or other hair problems, it could be a sign of overall nutritional deficiency.  This again is very typical of gut problems leading to multiple deficiencies of many, if not all nutrients.  This can only be remedied by proper testing, assessment and treatment b a specialist like myself.

What nutrient deficiencies can lead to brittle hair :

DIETARY ELEMENT | DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS | FOODS
Biotin   |
Biotin is recognized as one of the major hair, skin and nail vitamins.  It is often used in shampoos and other treatment for dry hair.  A deficiency of biotin can lead to brittle nails and dry brittle hair.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Biotin :
Bn.02 Deficiency symptoms for Biotin-brittle-hair thinning of hair which may lead to total hair loss
Bn.03 Deficiency symptoms for Biotin-brittle-hair dry scaly scalp or face in infants (cradle crap), or in various parts of the body in adults
Bn.04 Deficiency symptoms for Biotin-brittle-hair mental depression
Bn.05 Deficiency symptoms for Biotin-brittle-hair insomnia
Bn.06 Deficiency symptoms for Biotin-brittle-hair intestinal tract symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting
Bn.07 Deficiency symptoms for Biotin-brittle-hair fatigue or extreme exhaustion due to impaired energy production
Bn.08 Deficiency symptoms for Biotin-brittle-hair muscle pain or cramps related to physical exertion

Iron   |
Iron is important for oxygenation of body tissues, and a lack of iron can lead to symptoms such as brittle nails and dry brittle hair.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Iron :
Fe.01 Deficiency symptoms for Iron-brittle-hair iron-deficiency anemia, with symptoms that may include headaches, dizziness, irritability, pale skin, cold hands and feet, lack of energy, rapid heartbeat, brittle nails, shortness of breath, sore or inflamed tongue or mouth, lack of appetite

Iodine   |
Iodine deficiency can contribute to hypothyroidism (under-production of thyroid hormones) which can lead to symptoms such as dry brittle hair, hair loss, brittle nails, coarse dry pale skin, intolerance to cold, fatigue or weakness, poor memory, depression, irritability, weight gain, muscle or joint pain, constipation, decreased libido, infertility, menstrual irregularities or heavy periods, and in more severe cases, hoarseness, decreased sense of taste and smell, mental impairment, skin thickening, and puffy face, hands or feet.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Iodine :
I.01 Deficiency symptoms for Iodine-brittle-hair goiter characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland which may cause a choking feeling or difficulty with breathing and swallowing
I.03 Deficiency symptoms for Iodine-brittle-hair impaired immune system leading to susceptibility to infections
I.04 Deficiency symptoms for Iodine-brittle-hair hearing loss in children
I.05 Deficiency symptoms for Iodine-brittle-hair severe deficiency during pregnancy, breastfeeding or infancy can lead to neuro-cognitive defects in the baby and problems with growth, speech and hearing; a very severe form is cretinism, characterized by brain damage, speech problems, hearing loss, apathy, spasticity, and stunted growth
I.06 Deficiency symptoms for Iodine-brittle-hair even mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy can hamper growth of the child's brain and lead to low intelligence
I.07 Deficiency symptoms for Iodine-brittle-hair congenital hypothyroidism is the most common cause of mental retardation in children

Foods high in iodine that help prevent hypothyroidism, and consequently dry brittle hair, include · salt-water fish · seafood and shellfish · seaweed like dulse, bladderwrack, kelp, nori · iodized table salt.

Manganese   |
Manganese is important for activating enzymes that enable the body to utilize key hair, skin and nail vitamins like vitamin C and biotin.  Lack of this nutrient can therefore contribute to excessive bone loss and weak hair and nails.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Manganese :
Mn.01 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair nausea or dizziness
Mn.02 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair vomiting
Mn.03 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair skin rash
Mn.04 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair hearing loss
Mn.05 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair iron-deficiency anemia, due to manganese's role in iron utilization
Mn.06 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair high blood sugar levels (impaired glucose tolerance)
Mn.07 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair blood cholesterol levels that are too low
Mn.08 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair impaired bone growth or skeletal abnormalities, especially in children
Mn.10 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair loss of hair colour
Mn.11 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair defective functioning of the reproductive system
Mn.12 Deficiency symptoms for Manganese-brittle-hair severe deficiency in infants can cause convulsions, and even paralysis, blindness and deafness

Manganese rich foods for healthy hair that may be part of dry hair home remedies include · dark green leafy vegetables (broccoli, chard, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, romaine lettuce, spinach) · avocados · pineapple · raspberries · nuts (almonds, peanuts, pecans, walnuts).

Selenium   |
Research indicates that selenium deficiency worsens the effect of iodine deficiency on thyroid function, leading to hypothyroidism with symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, irritability, depression, poor memory, weight gain, constipation, intolerance to cold, heavier or lighter menstruation than normal, coarse dry pale skin, dry brittle hair, hair loss, and brittle nails, and that selenium supplements may help protect against goiter.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Selenium :
Se.01 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair weaker immune system leading to susceptibility to stress and illnesses
Se.02 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair greater incidence of cancer, especially gynecological, gastrointestinal, esophageal, lung, and prostate cancer
Se.03 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair rheumatoid arthritis patients tend to have low blood levels of selenium
Se.04 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair elevated blood pressure
Se.05 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair risk of arteriosclerosis / atherosclerosis (hardening and/or narrowing of the arteries), leading to heart or coronary artery disease
Se.07 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair loose skin
Se.08 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair hair or skin discoloration
Se.09 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair whitened fingernail beds
Se.10 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair Keshan disease (heart disorder characterized by inflamed heart muscles)
Se.11 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair Kashin-Beck disease (disabling disease of bones and joints, characterized by stunted growth, bone deterioration, and deformity of joints)
Se.12 Deficiency symptoms for Selenium-brittle-hair severe deficiency along with malnutrition can cause muscle breakdown characterized by pain or weakness in the muscles

Selenium-rich foods that alleviate iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism include · Brazil nuts (one of the most concentrated selenium food sources) · mushrooms (button, shiitake, reishi) · fish (cod, flounder, halibut, herring, mackerel, salmon, smelts, red snapper, swordfish, tuna) · seafood (lobster, oyster, scallops, shellfish, shrimp).

Goodbye gluten, hello Mycotoxin. This mold byproduct has been lurking in everything from dog foods to coffee  and is poised to become the next health buzzword. I have known this for several years and have avoided grains for about a decade for this very reason.

Following a lawsuit alleging that thousands of dogs may have been poisoned by mycotoxins, a toxic mold byproduct found in grains, a new study places them in an even more threatening location: breakfast cereals

Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry by Hyun Jung Lee and Dojin Ryu of the University of Idaho's School of Food Science, the paper, “Significance of Ochratoxin A in Breakfast Cereals from the United States,” is the latest in a long series of studies.

Throughout a period of two years, Lee and Ryu tested 489 samples of grain-based cereals from seven different markets across the country, looking for the presence of Ochratoxin A (OCA), the most common of mycotoxins, and one that is “considered to be a potent renal carcinogen.” OCA has also demonstrated neurotoxic and immunosuppressant effects, and is suspected as a trigger for autism, especially in males.

Of the 489 samples, 205, or 42 percent, showed OCA contamination, though almost all of them were well below the European Commission Regulations of 3 nanograms per gram, or roughly 3 parts per billion. The paper gives a nod to the EC Regulation limits because our own U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not impose any limits on mycotoxin content in food products.

Only 16 samples, all oat-based, were above the ECR threshold. Their study found that oat-based cereals contained the highest OCA contamination, at 70 percent. It was followed by wheat-based, at 32 percent, and then corn and rice-based, both at 15 percent.

OCA is produced mainly by two different fungi, Aspergillus Ochraceus and Penicillium Verrucosum, and is one of the most widespread mycotoxin contaminants–aside from grains, it can also be found in coffee, grapes, wine, pork, and water damaged homes.I have worked with patients damaged by mycotoxins in their homes and they are absolutely devastating to health. OCA's host molds need only a combination of high moisture and temperature to occur, and grains can become contaminated in both the field and in storage.

It is incredibly hardy.

Like most mycotoxins, it remains stable at normal food processing temperatures of 176 – 248 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning that OCA doesn't simply cook off . Comparisons between this study and others like it also show little difference between conventional and organic samples; both appear to be equally as susceptible to contamination.

What are the ramifications of this?

“[The] quick answer to that question is we don't know yet,” admitted Ryu via email. “We tested all products/commodities that may be contaminated with the toxin including infant cereal, dried fruits, beer, wine, coffee, etc. It would take another year to assess the data and to say if there is any health risk for the public.”

It should be noted that mycotoxins and OCA aren't a new thing—a quick Google search will reveal  a body of research studies on the substances, and their suspected effects, going back decades. And while conflicting info abounds  the fact that they present, on some level, a human threat at least in high concentrations does appear real. This is why Ryu and Lee hope that the results of their research spur an intensification of surveillance, especially on oats and oat-based products, which are consumed daily on a large scale.

One review is that thus far  2015 has spawned several mycotoxin red flags, linking them to everything from sick pets to declining dairy milk yields to reduced efficiency in poultry egg quality. Food Safety Magazine declared them “a food safety crisis,” and the “cause of 30-60 percent of food and feed rejections at European Union borders.”

I think it is important for consumers to DEMAND this budding research be potentiated and to DEMAND a health food supply once and for all from our government.

A Firestorm of controversy regarding the relatively new, 2006, vaccine for HPV Gardasil begins in Europe.

In March 2015, a Danish national television station (TV2) aired a documentary focusing on girls who suspected they had been injured by the HPV vaccine Gardasil. Immediately after the airing of the show, girls with similar experiences started coming out of the woodwork. Virtually all of the girls had the same story to tell.

According to the reporting authorities, they began to have serious new medical conditions shortly after using Gardasil, so they would go to the doctor. Some of these users have been referred out for psychological evaluation. Others have been diagnosed with  POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) a suspected side effect of HPV vaccines. It is characterized by periods of unconsciousness and even seizures.

Since many have been sent for psych evaluation and treatment it is unknown how many victims really exist.

Serious Adverse Reactions Reach One in 500

Denmark is divided into five healthcare regions. On June 1, the government established a single point of entrance in each one of these regions to accept and examine anyone suspected of having a negative reaction to Gardasil. The response was overwhelming.

The influx of girls seeking care was 60% higher than expected, suggesting the harmful effects was greater than Danish health authorities had foreseen. By June 9th, the waiting list to be evaluated was at least six to nine months long.  Two of the five centers did not know how long the girls would have to wait.  This may suggest that Gardasil may harbor side effects that were not anticipated.  I will keep you posted when more is known.

Additionally, Dr Dahlbergue,  a former physician for Merck the manufacturer of the vaccine has predicted that the vaccine would become the "greatest medical scandal of all time" crediting it for Illnesses like: Guilllain- Barre  syndrome and  limb paralysis.
