New research coming out of the University of Colorado Cancer Center, and published in the medical journal Cancer Letters, suggests that for those suffering from colon and rectal cancers might  be better off with a natural extract  instead of chemotherapy, and instead utilize a simple herbal extract with better success.

Grapeseed extract has recently been proven to prohibit cancerous cell growth and to initiate cancer cell death.

The bioactive compounds in grapeseed extract  according to the researchers are what make chemotherapy seem like an archaic form of treatment, especially considering that chemo and radiation treatments can backfire and cause cancer to come back from remission 10 times stronger than when it was first detected. These treatments kill healthy cells, but grapeseed extract compounds including curcumin and resveratrol leave healthy cells untouched while demolishing cancerous ones.

Grapeseed extract is so effective that it treats stage IV cancers with astonishing success. One of the doctors involved with the study stated, “It required less than half the concentration of grapeseed extract to suppress cell growth and kill 50 percent of stage IV cells than it did to achieve similar results in the stage II cells.” In this study they  go on to explain that grapeseed extract targets multiple mutations in cells to eliminate them and stop their proliferation in the body.

Just 150 to 250 mg per day of grapeseed extract couldhelp to prevent colon and rectal cancers while also preventing numerous other ailments. My important note is that it is important to differentiate between grape seed extract and grapefruit extract.  While grapefruit extract has many benefits, this particular study investigates grape seed extract.

Another compound from grapes is the popular supplement resveratrol which has been found helpful for many degenerative illnesses. Ancient Chinese doctors have long known that resveratrol (found in Hu Zhang or Japanese Knotwood) can even help repair cracks in arterial linings. It has been used for more than 1500 years to treat numerous medical problems and to increase longevity.

Another exciting natural cancer fighter is curcumin. One study on curcumin (which is the active compound found in the spice turmeric) from the University of Kansas' Cancer Center and Medical Center, indicates that curcumin extract inhibits the growth of esophageal cancer , though how it works “is not well understood”.

You can find our Grapeseed Extract here, our Grapefruit Seed Extract here, our Resveratrol here, and our Curcumin here.  Get them with free shipping and up to 20% off!

Alzheimer's disease is currently at epidemic proportions, with almost 6 million Americans  diagnosed and living with the disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

With no known cure and a terminal prognosis, Alzheimer's disease is characterized by degeneration and death to brain cells, leading to a progressive and permanent loss of both intellectual and social skills, and, ultimately, premature death.

From India's ancient ayurvedic medicine arrives new hope for this disorder. Recently  two herbs have shown remarkable promise in mitigating the disease. Each of these herbs have been part of  India's  Ayurvedic heritage for thousands of years.

Both curcumin and ashwaganda have been a part of India's Ayurvedic medical system for thousands of years.

Each are highly respected as  highly rejuvenative herbs which move the blood and remedy stagnation of the blood which is thought to be key to many degenerative conditions according to eastern philosophy.

Now, new research revealed both herbs may also fight the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease. The compound curcumin, which is found in the spice turmeric, is another notable herb for brain health. Recently revealed as effective in helping to stop the protein clumping that is the first step in diseases such as Parkinson's disease,5 past research has shown that curcumin may help by inhibiting the formation of destructive beta amyloid plaques in the brain of Alzheimer's patients, as well as break up existing plaques.

Here's the scoop:

·         Curcumin is more effective in inhibiting the formation of the protein fragments than many other potential Alzheimer's treatments

·         The low molecular weight and polar structure of curcumin allows it to penetrate the blood-brain barrier effectively and bind to beta amyloid.

·         Alzheimer's symptoms caused by inflammation and oxidation are eased by curcumin's powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties

ALSO, people with Alzheimer's tend to have high levels of inflammation in their brains, and curcumin is known primarily for its potent anti-inflammatory properties.

The second herb, ashwaganda extract has been studied primarily as an adaptogenic herb for its ability to herb the body withstand stress. Now, researchers at the National Brain Research Centre (NBRC, have conducted studies on mice that suggest ashwaganda extract may reverse memory loss and improve cognitive abilities in those with the disease. Initially, mice with Alzheimer's were unable to learn or retain what they learned, but after receiving ashwaganda for 20 days, this improved significantly. After 30 days, the behavior of the mice returned to normal. Researchers reported:A reduction in amyloid plaques (amyloid plaques, along with tangles of nerve fibers, contribute to the degradation of wiring in brain cells)

·         Improved cognitive abilities

Rather than impacting the brain directly, researchers found that the herb worked by boosting a protein in the liver, which enters the bloodstream and helps clear amyloid from the brain. Researchers concluded:

"The remarkable therapeutic effect of W. somnifera [ashwaganda]... reverses the behavioral deficits and pathology seen in Alzheimer's disease models."

The featured study is not the first time this humble herb has been implicated in improved brain health among Alzheimer's disease patients. In 2005, researchers found that withanolide derivatives (withanolide A, withanoside IV, and withanoside VI) isolated from ashwagandha improved neurite extension in both normal and damaged brain cells in Alzheimer's disease-model mice.

Additional lifestyle recommendations to improve brain and cognitive health and reduce risk.  If you have diabetes, reverse it naturally, same with heart disease and importantly,

.

·         Avoid anticholinergic and statin cholesterol drugs.  Drugs that block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, have been shown to increase your risk of dementia. These drugs include certain night-time pain relievers, antihistamines, sleep aids, certain antidepressants, medications to control incontinence, and certain narcotic pain relievers. I have personally seen this happen in clients where after being prescribed these medications patients well known to me went into cognitive declines they never recovered from.

We have a wonderful product that conveniently combines optimal dosages of both curcumin and ashwaganda in one formula here. FREE shipping.

For reversal of Alzheimer's anecdotal reports on the web seem to indicate a course of four to six full months is necessary before improvements are measurable.

Next week's topic: This herb halts even advanced cancers, see you then!

A brand New avant garde study links IBS to low levels of this vitamin!

Estimatedly, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects approximately 9-23% of people worldwide and between 10-15% of people in the US. Although it is widely accepted that dietary factors and stress exacerbate symptoms, conventional doctors have been stymied as to why and how it develops and in conventional medicine it is also generally accepted that there is no known cure and that the condition can only be managed.

NOW, a brand new study performed at the University of Sheffield, by the Molecular Gastroenterology Research Group, discovered that out of 51 patients with IBS, 82% had low levels of vitamin D. This study, which is the first of it's kind, also found an association between vitamin D levels and the patient's perceived quality of life, as measured by the extent to which they reported impact of the IBS on their life.

IBS can be a chronic and debilitating disease that can have a severely negative, and sometimes embarrassing impact. With symptoms that include diarrhea and constipation, many individuals who suffer chose not to seek treatment, and live with the condition undiagnosed. Dr. Corfe says that this data provides “a potential new insight into the condition and importantly a new way to try to manage it”. The researchers are planning on carrying out a larger and more definitive clinical trial and suggest that vitamin D testing and supplementation could help many patients.

Before you get too excited I will give you my takeaway on this important study.  First of all , IBS is a complex disorder involving myriad factors both physical and emotional.  After treating this and many other GI disorders SUCCESSFULLY for a decade or longer I would guess that low D levels arise DUE to the illness and not as a causative factor.  Failure to absorb nutrients is a common finding in GI clients which is one reason I routinely do a vitamin and nutrient panel on most of my clients after we have resolved their IBS symptoms.  Since Vitamin D was the only vitamin tested it does not surprise me that it would show up low in the vast majority of study participants.  Digestion is a primary and complex process and I have found bacteriology to be paramount in establishing proper digestion.  I find it unlikely any vitamin will prove a "magic bullet" for its process although remedying vitamin deficiencies in all my clients greatly enhances their healing times and quality of life. as it will anyone. If you'd like to try vitamin D get tested as too high amounts are toxic.

Happy New Year everyone! Before leaving 2015 behind I wanted to summarize some really important health news stories in 2015. Read on for the summary!

The first story and arguably the most important is that drinking Chamomile tea was shown to reduce death rates from all causes by 29% in Mexican American women over age 65, based on a recent study by the University of Texas at Galveston  Chamomile is one of the oldest and most widely studied medicinal plants in history.  In fact my grandfather a naturopath from Munich Germany and his german counterparts were often referred to as the "Chamomile doctors" because they so often prescribed it for health conditions.  Turns out he was RIGHT!

Breakthrough #2: The practice of Tai Chi has major health benefits.  In fact, recently practicing Tai Chi was found to be just as effective as physical therapy for knee osteoarthritis.  Many studies this past year have had positive findings for conditions as far reaching as anxiety, depression, COPD, bone health, and sleep to name just a few.  Put this one on your to try list in 2016!

Olive leaf extract and high blood pressure.  Known as the "silent killer" due to the lack of symptoms, hypertension is a leading killer in the U.S.

Now Olive Leaf Extract-FREE shipping! has been demonstrated in a Journal of Cardiology study to lower BP by reducing inflammation and lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol.  It also relaxes the blood vessels themselves.  Olive leaf extract also has a host of other health benefits!

Lastly, Diabetes Management has reported that increased potassium is linked to decreased heart and kidney complications in those with diabetes.  Potassium is prevalent in fresh foods and is low or non existent in processed foods.  Fresh foods are also low in processed sugars and salt.

I look forward to bringing you many interesting articles this month.  Be sure to check our calendar for upcoming topics and don't forget to sign up so you receive these in your in box!  Next week's forum is: Is this vitamin a NEW IBS Breakthrough....see you then.

Best of Health! and for a happy and healthy 2016

The Stomach has no teeth according to ancient Chinese wisdom therefore the recommendation is to chew your food '100 times' or 'until it is water'. Of course, it is the chewing of food and mixing it with saliva is the first stage in the digestive process. Next time you have something to eat, count how many times you chew. While 100 chews may be a little extreme, the idea of chewing your food more is worth consideration.   It is also noteworthy that chewing while not actually eating is also detrimental to the digestive process. This means chewing gum or god forbid chewing tobacco, straws etc...

The way one eats is also important – we should eat in a calm and relaxed environment, enjoying and focusing on our food. If we are distracted; for instance if we eat in front of television or whilst reading, then our digestion suffers. Sadly, fewer and fewer of us really take pleasure in food, and modern life dictates that we must eat 'on the run'. However, if you can, eating sitting at a table and taking time to enjoy your food allows your Qi to do its work undistracted and your digestion will benefit.  Ancient Chinese wisdom also says better to not eat than to eat while emotionally disturbed.

Finally, the time we eat is important. The American nutritionist Adelle Davis is best known for  her sound advice to 'eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper' which fits exactly with the Chinese viewpoint. The digestive system is at its strongest from 7-11am and at its weakest from 7-11pm, so it is wise to have a large breakfast and a small evening meal (ideally no later than 7pm). For those looking to lose weight, this is doubly important – if any further proof were needed, bear in mind that Japanese sumo wrestlers do the opposite and eat massive meals late in the evening in order to maintain their weight!

As a reminder, we will be closed on Thursday the 24th and Friday the 25th for Christmas.  We will be back in the office to fulfill orders on Saturday the 26th.  Happy Holidays!

Anyone over 40 should really think about taking this supplement. While there are many claims lot of claims about anti-aging effects from growth hormone, or this herb or that. There is no question that the loss of this substance over time is responsible for the visible signs of aging, wrinkled skin, hair loss, voice changes, diminished eyesight, wear-and-tear type osteoarthritis, yet little is known of this wonderful molecule.

A remarkable finding is that these visible aging signs can be reversed with oral HA supplements.  For instance, a  client, a 60 year old woman called me from her winter home in Arizona. She works at a golf course. Her knees were painful and "clicked" when she moved. She called to say, after just two weeks of taking 300 mg of daily oral HA, that her knee pain had disappeared, her husband had told her that her facial skin looked better than following two previous surgeries, her hair dresser also reported that her hair had begun to grow and was thicker, and, her chronic eye dryness and need for reading glasses disappeared! Others have written or called to say they had canceled knee or other joint  surgeries,  their wrinkles had disappeared, and friends began asking if they had undergone plastic surgery. The visible results of oral HA supplementation can sometimes be remarkable and rapid.

While we focus much on the main proteins in skin—collagen and elastin—when we look at skin health another cause of the degeneration of collagen is the decrease in hydrated HA, which supports collagen. This is why skin moisture is so important. Putting moisturizers on the skin surface helps, but this is like using a small Band-Aid on a large cut. Replenishing skin HA is much more important. Drinking plenty of fluids also helps keep the HA hydrated. HA helps keep the collagen intact and smoothes out the skin to prevent wrinkling.

There are no foods high in HA.  Actually, a good example of an equivalent is Echinacea, which helps to protect and retain HA levels in the body this cannot be taken on a longterm basis. Other nutrients such as bioflavonoids (quercetin, bilberry, cranberry, green tea, grape seed, others), ferulic acid from Ginkgo biloba and oryzanol in rice bran, as well as IP6 phytic acid, all of which bind to iron and copper and some which inhibit viral replication, help to retain HA levels.

One form of oral HA is derived from rooster combs. Historically it is interesting that  during a famine in China, rooster combs were consumed in an effort to get more calories out of chicken, and people noted improved skin health. Soon rooster combs were sought after as a beautifying food. There are reports that Marie Antoinette favored rooster combs for her complexion. Eventually, rooster combs were eaten as a delicacy in France, northern Italy and China.

It is important to choose a VERY VERY good  bioavailable product and use it consistently for at least a month or two.  Here's ours-FREE shipping! I do not recommend buying it from other sources because HA is very perishable and will degrade if not stored under optimal conditions.  Topically, HA is prevalent in most of my AWESOME topical skin products but again, we use the best which make a difference in a matter of DAYS, according to my clients. Here is a MIRACLE product!

By the way, I KNOW you will benefit from my products and advice so as much as I enjoy hearing positive stuff from you, it would be even more beneficial to help others by mentioning us in a review! We are on health grades, YELP, GOOGLE, Angie's List, Yahoo!  Thank YOU!  Happy Holidays,

PS  We have been awarded the BEST ACUPUNCTURE Clinic in Arlington Heights Award for the Third Consecutive Year!

While many folks enjoy the holidays others, (like myself ) find the holiday season extremely stressful and difficult.  This week we'll look at the seasons top stress busters compliments of Meghan Reitz and Associates in Schaumburg!

The holidays are a time when many families spend more time together than normal which is something many look forward to. But it can also bring out irritations and frustrations especially if you spend this time with relatives you normally are unable to see or even avoid the rest of the year.

HOW TO COPE: Remind yourself in the knowledge that this family togetherness will come to an end. Try to find something good in the war stories and reminscing  and try not to get pulled down into "old" stuff!

Remembering the ones we've lost

The holidays can be a big trigger when grieving the loss of a loved one. It often becomes more “real” during the holidays that your loved one is no longer physically with you. This becomes particularly true when it is the first holiday without this person.

HOW TO COPE: It's OK. We all grieve in different ways. Try to share moments of happiness or humor with your family and friends. Remember funny stories of the person or great accomplishments. Honor them in the way you know best and lean on those around you for support.

Holiday Let Down

Do you ever feel that things “should” be a certain way during the holidays? Breaking from traditions or experiencing a holiday that doesn't match up with your visions often leads to disappointment. Your high expectations for the holidays can lead to a let down when things just don't work out the way you wanted or expected.

HOW TO COPE: Grounding to the rescue again! Think about the things that you find truly important and meaningful about the holiday. These are usually easily attainable things that will help you better set your expectations. Maybe your parents are fighting or the turkey you made is too dry. At least you have your family there and something to eat. If there is no silver lining you can come up with… make one! Do a kind gesture for a neighbor you barely know or donate food or money to a charity to make sure you get your needs for a successful holiday met by helping others.

Finances

During the holidays, your wallet often takes a hit. It is an expensive time of year with all the gifts, parties, food, and travel. If finances are something you already have concerns about, the holidays can increase the pressure.

HOW TO COPE: Reduce your obligations and think outside the box for low cost, meaningful gifts. It is also okay to admit financial issues to family or friends if you are comfortable with sharing that information. The holiday season isn't about going into debt. You might be surprised by how supportive others can be if you are open and honest about it. Also, consider a “no-gift” holiday where the focus is more on the time spent together in the spirit of the holiday. Be upfront about your financial ability to travel as well. With new technologies like FaceTime, you can often connect virtually to family and friends afar, which should be the focus of the holiday either way.

Overwhelming Holiday Obligations

Everyone's schedule gets jam packed around the holidays with cookie exchanges, work functions, school performances, shopping, cooking and visiting with friends and family. It can be very overwhelming! Needing to be somewhere, remembering to do something and interacting with others can take a lot out of you both physically and emotionally. There can also be added exhaustion from the over indulgence in sweets and alcohol as well as those late nights.

HOW TO COPE: Say “No”. It's hard to say no to holiday events and requests, but by not obligating yourself to everything everyone asks of you, you will be taking the first step to self-care. When you can't say no or don't want to, then it is important to practice some mindfulness techniques to keep everything in perspective and positive. Think about the joy you're bringing to those around you as well as look forward to the feeling of success you will have when you complete these tasks. For each thing you take on, let it be the only one in your mind, keep yourself focused on that task and the good that your obligatory task is bringing you or others. When all else fails… just breathe. A few minutes of calming breathing or meditation a few times a day can push the holiday crazy away and let you focus on successfully accomplishing your Holiday activities.

With some attention, consciousness and planning alot of stressors can be managed very well freeing you to experience all the JOY of the season.

Coconut oil has previously been thought of as a “bad fat”, because  it contains saturated fatty acids. Recent studies have shown that natural sources of saturated fats are actually not only not "bad", but are beneficial, particularly for the brain. A new study, conducted at the Postgraduate Program in Cardiology at the School of Medicine, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, evaluated the health effects of extra virgin coconut oil. The study focused primarily on how coconut oil affects HDL cholesterol and a range of other measurements, such as body weight, size, and circumference.

Participants were all hypertensive-( high blood pressure), 63.2% male, with ages ranging from 54 to 70 years. 94.5% had blood lipid profiles indicating dyslipidemia and were taking standard cholesterol-lowering drugs. For the first three months, 136 participants were put on a standardized diet. For the third month and onward, the 116 who completed the first phase were placed in two intervention groups. The first group contained 22 participants who remained on the diet. The remaining 92 were put on the diet and given an additional 13 ml of extra virgin coconut oil daily (equivalent to approximately one tablespoon). The results at the end of the three months showed that the group of participants taking coconut oil saw a decrease in all six of the bodily parameters measured, including weight (reduction of .6 kilograms), body mass (reduction of .2 kg), waist circumference (reduction of 2.1 cm), neck perimeter (reduction of 4cm), systolic blood pressure (reduction of 3.3 points), and diastolic blood pressure (reduction of 3.5 points).

Participants also saw a 3.1 to 7.4 mg increase in HDL cholesterol. The researchers concluded that “nonpharmoacological interventions are essential for risk factor control in secondary prevention among patients with coronary disease. Our study showed that a diet rich in extra virgin coconut oil seems to favor the reduction of WC and the increase of HDL-C concentrations, raising with secondary prevention for CAD patients.”Coconut oil has previously been thought of as a “bad fat”, as it contains saturated fatty acids.

Participants were all hypertensive, 63.2% male, with ages ranging from 54 to 70 years. Our study showed that a diet rich in extra virgin coconut oil seems to favor the reduction of WC and the increase of HDL-C concentrations, raising with secondary prevention for CAD patients.”

Can an attitude of gratitude brings major health benefits?

An attitude of gratitude can foster major health benefits according to recent psychological research from Northeastern University and University of California, Riverside.  By focusing on positivity, researchers have discovered that participants experience better sleep, better moods overall with significantly less anxiety and depression, greater happiness and long term life satisfaction, and kinder behavior towards others even family members!

These studies have also shown that feeling grateful results in less aggressive behavior towards others even when provoked and a “Pay it Forward” towards others which has far reaching positive ripple effects.

I would sum all the research up as major stress reduction!  Decreased anger, stress, hostility, lowered cortisol levels translates into better health, and less “angry liver syndrome” which can be so prevalent at the holidays.

How to turn on the gratitude in your life?  A few simple habits  help!   Each day start and end the day with 5 things you are grateful for.  When around strangers, difficult clients or family members make a point of noticing and commenting upon something  good or positive about them.

Frequently, perform random acts of kindness. Self esteem rises when people feel good about themselves and their behavior.  The only real joy in life comes from being kind.

What if you are just not feeling it?? Read Dale Carnegie's: How to Win friends and Influence People, or watch It's a Wonderful Life.  Either should help get you in the REAL spirit.
