Author, Jeff McMahon recently published this topic in Forbes.  I agree with his assessment!  I also agree with his findings:

"Most Americans believe climate change is real, but usually they want someone else to do something about it...namely, the government".  What was always true is NOW ABUNDANTLY CLEAR... our government is NOT going to solve the problem of climate change...we are going to have to do it.

Fortunately there are many things we CAN DO!  Here is a list of just 9 of them!

1. Become a vegetarian or better a VEGAN.  Up to 51% of all carbon emissions are from the agricultural sector...Of this, meat and dairy comprise almost all of it..decide not to eat it...or give it up one day a week...if everyone did just this one day a week it would be the equivalent to not driving 91 billion miles!

2. Eat Organic!  Synthetic fertilizers are byproducts of the oil company...when you buy regular produce you support the Big Oil Industry...

3. Buy Local!  Minimizing transportation of goods, mitigates climate change.

4. Adjust climate only for extremes...I keep my home at approximately 65-67 degrees in winter and do not use AC except as my dog requires in summer... your body will adjust.

5. Eliminate clothes machine drying...saves a ton of energy and clothes last much longer, which means more climate savings!

6. Vote with your feet!  The more pedestrians walking and biking the more transportation analysts will work to make these activities safe!

7. Raise children to be vegan and respectthe environment...each child causes a parent to abuse the environment 6 times...clearly this has to stop. Unless you don't care that they won't have a world to live in...

8. Reuse before recycling!  Reducing and reusing is much cleaner than recycling because it doesn't involve transportation.

9. Calculate your carbon emissions and offet them!  Go to climateneutralnow.com

Next week we will discuss the rise in bladder cancer and how to avoid it!

Depression is often thought of as an emotional or psychiatric disorder without any physical basis. In many cases of depression, however, there may well be a physical basis or even an environmental one.

One such cause which has been well established in the medical literature will be discussed here today.

Estrogen dominance has been established as a physical cause of depression since Dr. Lee's work in the 1980s, and beyond.

Since that time it has become clear that many chemicals behave as Estrogens. What is also clear is that we are exposed to them all our lives, not just in the womb. This group of compounds have been called the Xenoestrogens. Xeno is the Greek word for stranger, hence the comment about strangers in the night. The list is represented below. These are chemicals which are cumulative in some instances and increase in quantity in the body as we get older. One of the effects of Xenoestrogens is to reduce the excretion rate of copper from the body. All estrogens cause copper accumulation, xenoestrogens look like estrogens to our biochemistry and hence also cause copper retention. These patients have very high copper levels. These Xenoestrogens (especially the pesticides) over time have progressively been classed as carcinogens. The combination of high copper (which disables iron, zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin E) and intracellular carcinogens may explain the more unpleasant problems in this list.

List of the Xenoestrogens

Pesticides (DDT, DDE, 2,4,T, Dioxin, Dieldrin, endosulfan, methoxychlor, kepone, toxaphene, chloropicrin etc)

Petroleum products (car fumes, methlybenzene, toluene, benzene, styrene, pyrene)

Plastics (PVC, PCB's biphenyl, nonylphenyl, octaphenyl, lunch wraps etc)

Hormones: a. From Doctors (OCP & HRT), b. From poultry industry and antibiotics in animal feed

Four Main Causes of Estrogen Dominance in Men and women

Cause #1: Diet

Animal products are major estrogen dominance contributors. Non-organic produce and processed foods made from them, can also contribute to estrogen dominance because they are grown with herbicides and pesticides which mimic estrogen.

Cause #2: Excess Body Weight

Fat tissues are rich in an enzyme that converts protein into testosterone, and testosterone into estradiol; the more fat you have, the higher your estradiol levels will be. Estrogen is also stored in fat cells, so if you're overweight you'll need to lose excess fat cells to reverse estrogen dominance.

Cause #3: Caffeine and Alcohol

Caffeinated beverages are major estrogen dominance triggers. Alcohol is also problematic because plants used to produce alcoholic beverages contain estrogen-like compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. It is well known that alcoholic beverages greatly increase the burden of estrogen on the body while at the same time slowing the function and metabolism of the liver...

Cause #4: MEN- Tight Underwear

Tight underwear forces the testicles to be squeezed up against the body, which reduces the flow of blood to the testicles and causes them to overheat. These two factors lead to an increase in estradiol and a decrease in testosterone.

Besides making dietary and other changes...you should consider hormonal testing and or liver testing and treatment. All these measures can help to illuminate underlying causes of your depression.

 silence

People these days are becoming more and more robot like and stressed, continual bombardment of noise may be to blame…

1. Silence relieves stress and tension.

Noise pollution increases STRESS and leads to high blood pressure and heart attacks, as well as impairing hearing and overall health. Loud noises raise stress levels by activating the brain's amygdala and causing the release of the stress hormone cortisol, according to research.
A paper by environmental psychologist Dr. Craig Zimring suggests that higher noise levels in neonatal intensive care units led to elevated blood pressure, increased heart rates and disrupted patient sleep patterns.

Just as too much noise can cause stress and tension, research has found that silence has the opposite effect, releasing tension in the brain and body.

A study published in the journal Heart found that two minutes of silence was more relaxing than listening to “relaxing” music, based on changes in blood pressure and blood circulation in the brain
.

2. Silence replenishes our mental resources.

In our everyday lives, sensory input is being thrown at us from every angle. When we can finally get away from these sonic disruptions, our brains' attention centers have the opportunity to restore themselves.

Uninterrrupted attentional demands of modern life put a significant burden on the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is involved in high-order thinking, decision-making and problem-solving.
As a result, our attentional resources become drained. When those attention resources are depleted, we become distracted and mentally fatigued, and may struggle to focus, solve problems and come up with new ideas.

The opposite is also true, the brain can restore its finite cognitive resources when we're in environments with lower levels of sensory input than usual. In silence ― for instance, the quiet stillness you find when walking alone in nature ― the brain can let down its sensory guard, so to speak.

3. In silence, we can tap into the brain's default mode network.

The default of the brain is activated when we engage in what scientists refer to as “self-generated cognition,” such as daydreaming, meditating, fantasizing about the future or just letting our minds wander.

When the brain is idle and disengaged from external stimuli, we can finally tap into our inner stream of thoughts, emotions, memories and ideas. Engaging this network helps us to make meaning out of our experiences, empathize with others, be more creative and reflect on our own mental and emotional states.

In order to do this, it's necessary to break away from the distractions that keep us lingering on the shallow surfaces of the mind. Silence is one way of getting there.

Default mode activity helps us think deeply and creatively. As Herman Melville once wrote, “All profound things and emotions of things are preceded and attended by silence.”

4. Getting quiet can regenerate brain cells.

Silence can quite literally grow the brain.

A 2013 study on mice, published in the journal Brain, Structure, and Function, involved comparing the effects of ambient noise, white noise, pup calls and silence on the rodents' brains. Although the researchers intended to use silence as a control in the study, they found that two hours of silence daily led to the development of new cells in the hippocampus, a key brain region associated with learning, memory and emotion.

While preliminary, the findings suggested that silence could be therapeutic for conditions like depression and Alzheimer's, which are associated with decreased rates of neuron regeneration in the hippocampus.

The studies mentioned in this article were originally published in the Huffington Post.

5-300x300

Many people are interested in habits that will improve their health. Unfortunately, due to rampant misinformation, some practices are not really helpful in this pursuit. Today, we will explore just a few practices that are really not worth it.

JUICING:

Juicing is very popular and many folks believe that juicing is extremely healthy….it isn't. When you remove all the fiber from fruits and vegetables what you are left with is…sugar.  This will wreck havoc on your health and gut bacteria.  What people are really deficient in is dietary fiber. Lightly cooked vegetables is the way to go.

“DETOX” Products:

Your body comes equipped with an amazing detoxification  system in place.  While there are occasions for fasts, or bowel rests, or protein avoidance, the best practice is in eating and extremely clean organic diet.  Detox supplements cause your liver, bowel and kidneys to work harder…that is all…avoid them. I don't sell them, I don't use them.

ALMOND Milk:

While many people believe almond milk is a great substitute for milk …it is not.  Processing removes all the protein and nutrients. You are much better off with soymilk.

EGG WHITES versus whole eggs:

Evidence has been accumulating for some time that foods do not impact cholesterol levels much at all.  Go ahead and eat your whole eggs. The yolk contains most of the nutrients anyway.

MICROWAVING:

Avoiding microwaves is unnecessary.  In fact, Microwaving quickly…(I steam vegetables in this way) preserves many nutrients over other ways of cooking. However, DO NOT Cook protein in a microwave. It causes changes that are not compatible with health.

GLUTEN FREE FOODS:

Processed gluten free foods and products are typically just junk. Devoid of fiber, nutrients, and high in sugars natural or otherwise…avoid them.

These are just a few suggestions...there will be others.  See you next week when I will discuss an extremely dangerous OTC medication.

See You then!

pessimist

Most people assume their personality type is written in stone, but that may not be the case. Pessimism, a personality type is characterized by seeing the glass "half empty", as well as the tendency to believe in negative events or that the worst will happen. It also suggests a tendency to lack confidence in the future or even hope in the future...

Stress has been connected to the development of anxiety disorders and depression, which in turn can encourage personality changes. Major life events can also prompt changes in personality. Therefore, it is also possible that more long term stress would be able to induce a personality change, for this study, specifically pessimism.

In  a recent study, 332 participants completed different surveys for five weeks in a row, and were encouraged to consider the previous week in their responses. Researchers utilized the most widely used scales for both stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale) and pessimism (items taken from the Life Orientation Test-Revised). This research is the first to show that stress and pessimism are linked. Interestingly, researchers noticed decreases in levels of perceived stress as well as pessimism. This may be due to the unexpected benefits of participating the study, such as the possibility that expressing stress levels may be cathartic. The changes in pessimism in five weeks are supported by previous research showing that personality changes can occur in such a short timeframe.

As in any study, some limitations are inherent. This study was based on participants reporting their perceived stress and pessimism, which could lead to intentional or unintentional dishonesty from participants. Stress may also influence other personality traits, like conscientiousness and extraversion, which may in turn affect pessimism. Additionally, personal growth after a traumatic event may influence the development of positive personality traits, as well... not just negative ones like pessimism. Therefore this doesn't mean that stress causes pessimism.

This study is the first to show the link between perceived stress and pessimism, but further research is indicated to determine the chronological order of these effects, as well as how stress might affect other personality traits. Finally, it is imperative that these research efforts are able to make meaningful and relevant statements about human health. With an ever-increasing need for effective mental health treatment, future research should address the relevance of these stress-personality dynamics for human health.

A significant percentage of people who undergo LASIK eye surgery to correct their vision may experience NEW eye problems according to a recent study.

Researchers found that, three months after the participants had LASIK surgery, more than 40 percent of them reported experiencing symptoms such as seeing glare or halos around objects, that they did not experience before undergoing the surgery.

“To our knowledge, our study is one of the few that have reported the development of new visual symptoms” after the surgery, the researchers at the Food and Drug Administration wrote in the study, published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology.

Overall, people's vision did improve after the surgery, the researchers found. However, 43 percent in the naval group, and 46 percent in the civilian group, reported experiencing new symptoms, such as seeing double images, glare, halos or starbursts, three months after the surgery.

People in the study were, on average, more satisfied with the quality of their vision after the surgery than before it. However, between 1 and 4 percent of people in both groups reported some degree of dissatisfaction with their vision at three to six months after the surgery, the researchers found.

These results show that “there is no such thing as perfect surgery,” said Dr. Mark Fromer, an ophthalmologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, who was not involved in the study. However, he noted that, based on his own experience with LASIK patients, the people who experience the symptoms reported in the study do not typically feel incapacitated by these symptoms.

People should be informed about the risk of such symptoms by their doctors before they decide whether to undergo LASIK surgery, he said.

“Laser vision correction surgery can be a wonderful procedure, but it has to be for the right patient,” he said. “It has to be for the patient who is willing to accept any of the possible side effects that sometimes can occur with LASIK, such as dry eye or eye glare or double image.”

When clients have asked me whether or not to have Lasik, I have always asked them to do their own research and due diligence.  I would suggest a very experienced eye surgeon.

I wonder also, what the long term effects of LASIK are...

shoulderpain

image from johnsonspinalcare.com

This important news just in!

While most people blame excessive and/or repeated physical strain for rotator cuff problems, Kurt Hegmann, M.D., M.P.H., Director of the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health and a Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine, who was the lead author of a study at the University of Utah School of Medicine has discovered otherwise.

His findings were that individuals with rotator cuff injury and aggravating joint pain in a shoulder and the surrounding tendons and muscles should realize that those symptoms could be a sign that they are at an increased risk for heart disease and may find it necessary to manage heart disease risk factors.

Physical exertion can be an irritant, but evidence points to other factors that could also be to blame for chronic shoulder problems. It is also to be noted that previous research has found that those people who had an increased risk for heart disease also experienced a tendency toward the musculoskeletal disorders of Achilles tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and/or tennis elbow.

This study shoulder problems to that list, because the more risk factors for heart disease that the study participants had, the more likelihood that they had shoulder pain as well.

What are those risk factors? The deadly quartet as they are known are: obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. The study participants with the largest number of the risk factors were found to have 4.6 times more likelihood than those having none of those factors to have had shoulder joint pain and had almost six times the likelihood of having had the second shoulder condition named tendonopathy of the rotator cuff. Those with their heart risk at a mid-level had less likelihood of having had either shoulder condition.
