Gentle sound stimulation synchronized to the rhythm of brain waves significantly enhances deep sleep in older adults and improves their ability to recall words.

Researchers at Northwestern University have determined that soft sound stimulation synced up with the rhythm of brain waves induces an improved deep sleep in older individuals. Such stimulation even boosts those adults' ability to recall specific words. An example of such gentle audio stimulation is a rushing waterfall. The study details were recently published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.

The Importance of Deep Sleep

Deep sleep is critical for the consolidation of memories. However, when one reaches middle age, deep sleep typically decreases. Scientists believe this is part of the reason why memory loss occurs throughout the aging process. Sound stimulation might be the solution to combat such memory loss.

When deep sleep occurs, each brain wave is reduced to one per second. This is quite the slow rate compared to the 10 oscillations that occur every second when one is awake. The study's co-author, Giovanni Santostasi, created an algorithm that transmits audio during the rising part of slow wave oscillations. Such stimulation boosts the synchronization of neuron activity.

Study Details

The study involved 13 individuals age 60 or older. They were recruited from Northwestern's Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center. The study keyed in on older individuals as they have plenty to gain in terms of memory recall from improved deep sleep.

The study made use of a breakthrough audio system that improved the effectiveness of stimulation in older individuals. The study's new approach reads one's brain waves as they occur. It locks in the subtle audio stimulation when a specific moment of neuron communication occurs during deep sleep.

The participants were provided with a single night of acoustic stimulation and a night of false stimulation. The false stimulation was the same as the acoustic version yet the subjects did not hear noise while sleeping. The participants were given a memory test the night of their acoustic and sham stimulation sessions. They completed another memory test the next morning.

The Results

Memory recall ability following the false stimulation improved by a couple percentage points. Those subjected to pink noise the night before enjoyed vastly superior memory recall. The improvement was about three times that of those exposed to the sham stimulation. The magnitude of the slow wave sleep enhancement played a part in the level of memory improvement. This suggests slow wave sleep is beneficial for memory even as one reaches his golden years.

A Non-medication Approach to Improving Sleep and Memory

The beauty of audio stimulation is that it does not require expensive medication that often causes nasty side effects. This “pink noise” as it is often referred to, is a simple and completely safe means of boosting brain health.

This Just IN!  Latest research reveals that a higher intake of dietary potassium can assist in lowering blood pressure.

The World Health Organization reports that more than one billion people throughout the world are living with hypertension. Hypertension is responsible for almost 50%of deaths due to heart disease and 51 percent of deaths due to stroke.

Researchers in a study conducted by the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California reported that a higher intake of dietary potassium can aid in lowering blood pressure and that the kidneys excrete more water and salt when the dietary potassium level in the blood is high. Eating a high potassium diet can be likened to taking a diuretic. Also explored was the link between potassium, dietary sodium, blood pressure, and the sodium-potassium ratio and an investigation regarding the effects of potassium and dietary sodium on hypertension.

Alicia McDonough, Ph.D., professor of cell and neurobiology cell at the Keck School, stated that evidence in their analysis suggests that increasing dietary potassium may have an equally important effect and a direct benefit of lowering hypertension.

Many nutritious foods are rich in potassium, a valuable mineral and salt that aids with electrolyte balance and in numerous cardiac functions. Also, without it, your body's vital energy processes are not able to occur.

Following is a list of potassium rich foods!

Banana

Considered a traditional potassium fruit, a medium-sized banana offers about 15 percent of the daily requirements and can be added to other foods such as salads, cereal, jello, puddings, smoothies, and more.

Yogurt

Yogurt itself is one of the best suggestions for a part of a healthy breakfast, as a midday snack, or as a full meal especially with a variety of fresh fruits added. A 100-gram serving offers more than 250 milligrams of potassium.

Apricots

The apricot is tasty and is high in antioxidants including vitamins A and C as well as potassium. A 100-gram serving is about seven percent of the daily needs, is low on the glycemic index, and is an ideal quick snack.

Acorn Squash

It is loaded with potassium, with a 100-gram serving having over 400 mg of potassium. You can bake it with brown sugar and cinnamon for a side dish or make it stuffed with a favorite meat for a complete meal.

Avocado

The avocado has an abundant amount of omega-3 fatty acids, maintains the electrolyte balance, is a filling treat as a snack or added to a salad or smoothie, and has close to 1,000 milligrams of potassium per serving.

Potato

One cup (173 grams) is loaded with nearly 30 percent of the daily requirements for potassium. It is best to enjoy the potato boiled, baked, or grilled and avoid fried versions.

Fresh Salmon

Salmon is one of the healthiest foods and best meat sources as it is also one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. A small three-ounce serving also contains over 500 milligrams of potassium.

Almonds

Almonds are high in fiber, low on the glycemic index, and help maintain glucose levels and the electrolyte balance. A serving of 28 grams contains about 200 milligrams of potassium and no sodium. However, snack on just a small amount because that serving contains close to 200 calories.

The ability of one's body to have control of the blood's potassium levels is critical to normal heart, muscle, and nerve functions. Since a typical Western diet consists of low potassium and high sodium foods, the body uses the retention of sodium to hold onto that potassium. That is similar to eating a diet high in sodium, which can significantly increase the hypertension risk.

Contrary to popular belief, almost all fresh foods are high in potassium. Processing of foods is what removes postassium and adds sodium which is contrary to how our body's operate!

See you Wednesday for our health forum: Where I will discuss how some noise may lead to deeper sleep and better memory...see you then!

Women who frequently have hot flashes between the ages of 40 - 53 years may be more likely to have poor vascular function regardless of  risk factors for cardiovascular disease!

A brand new study has determined that women who endure regular hot flashes between the ages of 40 and 53 may be more prone to insufficient vascular function. This likelihood of poor vascular function is independent of cardiovascular disease risk factors as well as estradiol levels. The study's findings were recently published in Menopause. This study was funded by the University of Pittsburgh Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institutes of Health.

Study Details

Researchers studied data from 272 women between age 40 and 69. Each study participant was a non-smoker. These women were in the late perimenopausal stage of 2-12 months amenorrhea or the postmenopausal stage. The study did not include pregnant women or those with cardiovascular disease, hysterectomy, neoplasia, kidney failure, Raynaud's phenomenon, Parkinson's disease, seizures and/or bilateral oophorectomy. Potential study participants who recently used reproductive hormone agents, insulin, reuptake inhibitors and/or cardiovascular drugs were not included. The average age of the typical study participant was 54. The average study participant was also characterized by the following features: Caucasian, college educated, postmenopausal and a fairly favorable cardiovascular disease risk factor profile.

Each participant underwent a physical exam and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) to determine endothelial function. The participants also underwent carotid artery ultrasound, ambulatory flash monitoring and a blood draw. The study also made use of a wrist actigraph for three days, an electronic hot flash diary for three days and a physiologic hot flash monitor for 24 hours. Menopause status was determined according to menstrual bleeding patterns. Estradiol levels, triglycerides, insulin, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, interleukin 6 and C-reactive protein were evaluated.

Study Findings

Younger women between the ages of 40 and 53 who endured hot flashes had a low FMD compared to those who did not endure hot flashes. This lower FMD stayed true even after controlling for additional cardiovascular disease risk factors. It is an indication of comparably poor endothelial function.

The research team also found that a higher frequency of physiologically monitored hot flashes was linked to poor FMD. The study's authors noted that the FMD of the youngest women who endured hot flashes was similar to that of women in the oldest tertile analyzed in the study (54-60 years-old). A link between hot flashes and FMD could not be established amongst these older women.

In terms of the role of E2, the research team determined that levels were not significantly linked with FMD and did not decrease the association between hot flashes and FMD in the study's young women (40-53 years-old). The study's findings indicate that menopausal hot flashes are linked to inferior endothelial function regardless of E2. However, this finding is strictly limited to young women.

The research team noted that prior studies have linked an association between early hot flashes and a heightened cardiovascular disease risk. The researchers believe the different cardiovascular risk disease markers might indicate different temporal relations to hot flashes that progress from endothelial dysfunction to atherosclerosis all the way to clinical cardiovascular disease events. However, the pathophysiologic mechanism underlying this association is not crystal clear.

In the end, the study's findings point to the possible value of considering the role of hormones as well as hot flashes in cardiovascular health changes that take place early on during the menopause transition. The findings also lend credence to the role endothelium might play in the physiology of hot flashes that take place in comparably young women.

Feel good emotions” triggered by enjoying nature's great wonders may lower a person's cytokines.

As we now know, chronic inflammation is linked to a range of medical disorders, from cancer, to heart disease to irritable bowel syndrome to cognitive decline. Cytokines are proteins that prompt increased activity of the immune system, a process necessary to combat infection.  However, when the mechanism goes into overdrive, it may contribute to heart disease, type-2 diabetes, autoimmune diseases, mood disorders and more.  Jennifer Stellar, from, University of California/Berkeley (UCB; California, USA), and colleagues completed two separate experiments, enrolling over 200 young adults.  Subjects reported on a given day the extent to which they had experienced such positive emotions as amusement, awe, compassion, contentment, joy, love and pride. Samples of gum and cheek tissue, known as oral mucosal transudate, taken that same day showed that those who experienced more of these positive emotions, especially awe, wonder and amazement, had the lowest levels of the cytokine, Interleukin 6, a marker of inflammation.  Observing that: “awe … was the strongest predictor of lower levels of proinflammatory cytokines. These effects held when controlling for relevant personality and health variables,” the study authors submit that: “This work suggests a potential biological pathway between positive emotions and health through proinflammatory cytokines.”

Prebiotics Nourish good bacteria!

Soluble fiber and non-digestible sugars which are utilized by gut bacteria.

The two most widely accepted prebiotics are FOS (fructooligosaccharides, which includes inulin) and GOS (galactooligosaccharides). If you read the labels on prebiotic products, you'll see ingredients that end in “saccharides” and “ose,” which means sugar or carbohydrate. You might also see ones that end in “itol,” which are alcohol sugars, I DO NOT recommend those.

Food Sources of Prebiotics

prebiioticMany prebiotic supplements are made from grains like oats and corn, which contain soluble fiber. Whole grains, such as brown rice, whole grain breads, whole-wheat pasta, barley, oatmeal, flax, and chia, contain fiber as well. All of these things should be a regular part of a healthy diet.

Organic fruits and vegetables also contain prebiotics... Asparagus, leeks, artichokes, garlic, carrots, peas, beans, onions, chicory, jicama, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower, spinach, kale, and chard all contain prebiotics. (It's interesting to note that cooking these vegetables doesn't negatively affect the prebiotic fiber content.) As for fruits, bananas, cherries, apples, pears, oranges, strawberries, cranberries, kiwi, and berries are good sources. Nuts are also a prebiotic source. If you do not eat healthfully consider taking this powder daily...FREE SHIPPING!

For Healthy People, you do not need to take a separate prebiotic supplement if you are eating a healthful diet which contains a variety of the foods as indicated above. Others, who are needing to rebuild their intestinal environment will need to take a prebiotic supplement on occasion, especially if their levels are dangerously low.  A healthy diet is so important for colonic and digestive health! It is impossible to maintain a healthy digestive balance without eating healthy foods. Fortunately, this will yield dividends beyond digestion!

Pineapples Halt Harmful Gut Bacteria

Scientists working to find new ways to treat antibiotic-resistant superbugs have discovered a possibility in the stems and roots of pineapples. A group of three enzymes known as bromelain were  discovered in the 1930s, but the uncovering of their antibiotic qualities happened only a few decades ago, with Australian scientists now using the enzymes to cure diarrhea in piglets. According to Rob Pike, a biochemist from LaTrobe University located in Melbourne, Australia, since pigs and humans are anatomically and physiologically similar in many ways, the enzyme has the potential to provide an alternative treatment for people. While antibiotics target bacteria, bromelain works with the cells in the gut by making it difficult for the bacteria to stick to the cells. The chance of the bacteria evolving and becoming resistant is also limited by the three enzymes targeting gut cells. Scientists hope this will be the case in humans, so diarrhea will not occur.

It is crucial to find alternative treatments for superbugs, because they are predicted to kill about 10 million people a year by 2050; more than the number of people killed by cancer. Scientists hope the new enzymes from pineapple can be used as another weapon to fight resistant bacteria, as many antibiotics do not workany longer. "The momentum to develop alternatives to antibiotics is there now because people believe antibiotics are on the way out and we need something to replace them."

Professor Pike and his colleague Lakshmi Wijeyewickrema is presently developing the alternative treatment to antibiotics along with Anatara Life Science, which also conducted the animal trials.

I have used bromelain in cases of SIBO and gut overgrowth and it has worked well for folks where it is indicated...stay tuned!  Bromelain is also noted for rapid recovery from sports injuries! Bromelain must never be used by folks with inflammation or gastritis!

Next week, we shall discuss, Do You Need A Prebiotic???  See you then! Enjoy the sunshine!

Global warming seems to have implications even for the health of the human body, Dutch researchers reported recently that the global warming rate has increased risk of diabetes and of course obesity….

Now, an Oxford University researcher has found that combating obesity and type 2 diabetes can be as simple as opening a bedroom window at night. The presence of a cool breeze seems to improve health, by lowering the bedroom's temperature by a couple degrees. These findings were released on the heels of the Dutch scientist's discovery of a link between global warming and the ever-increasing diabetes epidemic.

Why Opening a Bedroom Window is Beneficial for Health

Research indicates that as little as a single degree centigrade increase in environmental temperature has the potential to cause a whopping 100,000 new cases of diabetes in the United States every year. This occurs because the human body burns less brown fat to maintain a comfortable temperature, causing sensitivity to insulin and consequential weight gain.

The study's results lend credence to the already-existing “keep cool” theory for diabetes and obesity reduction. Professor Grossman from Oxford University spearheaded the research. He indicates there is “encouraging” evidence that reducing body temperature, even if only by a couple degrees, improves the health of those who suffer from diabetes. He states that living in a comparably cold environment is helpful to increasing sensitivity to insulin and the prevention of diabetes.

Grossman also made it clear that adequate sleep is helpful in warding off diabetes and obesity. However, most people are aware of the fact that peaceful sleep in which REM is attained benefits the body and mind. Few are aware that sleeping in a cool bedroom with the window open to allow the night breeze in is also helpful.

Additional Evidence That Cooler Temperatures Boost Health

Scientists analyzed temperature data and diabetes cases in the United States as well as the Virgin Islands, Guam and Puerto Rico. It was determined that a single degree centigrade bump in temperature heightened the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 0.314 per 1,000 individuals.

A study performed by academicians at the Netherlands' Maastricht University Medical Centre indicates that lowering the thermostat to a range between 15 C and 17 C for a couple hours each day will help reduce weight. The colder temperatures force the body to burn calories in order to stay warm. In fact, achieving a bedroom temperature that is similar to the temperature outside seems to benefit human health. It all boils down to the fact that exposure to cold temperatures heightens metabolic rate. This is the rate at which calories are burned. Cold temperatures catalyze the metabolic rate by 30 percent, allowing for the burning of 400 calories per hour.

Details About Human Body Fat

The human body has two distinct types of fat: brown and white. White body fat holds calories. Brown body fat is converted to energy and heat. Keeping brown fat cool is conducive to its stimulation and subsequent weight loss. Though there is a strong connection between diabetes and a cold body, the notion that such a link is tied to climate change is highly unlikely.

The Utility of the Findings

It is certainly interesting to note that a cooler bedroom can reduce the odds of obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, the planet is warming and it would be impossible for the majority of people to migrate to areas with cold climates. Yet it is certainly possible for people to turn down the thermostat at night or crack open a window on fall, spring and winter nights to let the cool breeze in.

Can Kidney Stones Be Reversed Naturally?

 medicalnewstodaydotcom image: MedicalNewsToday

Ask anyone who has suffered the excruciating pain of a kidney stone and they will probably tell you they would do ANYTHING to avoid a recurrence.  Like most illnesses, the best tactic is prevention…but first a bit of science…

Kidney stones are usually calcium stones . They occur when calcium combines with oxylate, phosphate, or carbonate to form a stone. Uric acid can also form kidney or bladder stones.

Major causes of kidney stones include poor diet, synthetic calcium supplements,  a diet too high in oxylates,  dehydration, an acidic system, obesity, mineral imbalances, and sedentary lifestyles…

Dehydration is a major cause of kidney stones…strive for a minimum of 64 oz of water per day.

Vegan or vegetarian diets are associated with lower incidents of kidney stones…people who eat tons of protein and use protein supplements are putting stress on their kidneys.

Caffeine use increases risk of kidney stones.

Excess dairy foods like milk and cheese can cause kidney stones to form.

Some ideas to check if you are prone to or have a family history of kidney stones:

Trace Elements Testing:  This will show your mineral levels over a long period of time and can make a huge difference.

Vitamin E can reduce calcium oxylate levels, along with vitamin B-6.

Magnesium will help the body's use of calcium.

Finally, in the throes of an attack, I have treated patients with acupuncture by supporting the kidney's health. In these cases, the stones have passed quickly, within a few hours of the treatments…

How meat is prepared and cooked  has an impact on how much the meat increases colon and kidney cancer risk according to several studies. The higher the temperature at which the meat is cooked, and the more well-done the meat is, the more likely it is to increase cancer risk.

Cooking meat at high temperatures until very well-done creates carcinogens (cancer-causing compounds). More well-done meat contains higher levels of carcinogens, called heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) than less well-done meat.

HAAs and PAHs are formed when the protein and/or fat in the meat gets very hot. Think of the black, char-grilled exterior that a piece of grilled meat can have. This is a source of carcinogens, the chemicals that can increase colon cancer risk.

How Much is Too Much?

To put the "how much" question about meat and colon cancer risk into perspective, keep in mind:

  • When studying diet and colon cancer, health experts have found that people regularly eating the most red meat have up to 50% greater colon cancer risk compared with people eating the least red meat.
  • Eating more than 3-5 ounces of meat per day significantly increases the risk of death from any cause, including death due to colon cancer, other cancers, and heart disease.
  • Eating more than an ounce and a half of processed meat per day, such as hot dogs or deli meat, significantly increases the risk of death due to colon cancer, other cancers, and heart disease.
  • A 3-ounce serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards. Simply eating a roast beef sandwich for lunch and a burger or hot dog for dinner will put you over the daily limit for meat intake that research tells us will increase your risk of colon cancer, other cancers, heart disease, and death.

Meat , eat in Moderation and Cook Properly...

If you enjoy meat, but want to keep your risk for colon and other cancers in check:

  • Cooking Slow & Low. Even if two pieces of meat are cooked to the same "level of done-ness", the one that was cooked at a lower temperature for longer will contain fewer carcinogenic (cancer-causing) compounds than meat that is cooked very hot and fast. DO NOT CHAR!!
  • Raise the Flavor with Spices and Herbs. Marinate your meat in mixtures that contain spices and herbs such as rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, fennel, or anything you enjoy.  Marinating meat in spice and herb mixtures actually reduces the amount of carcinogens that are formed during cooking!
  • Use the Right Tools. When grilling, use tongs to flip the meat rather than a fork. Piercing the meat causes fat and juices to drip onto the coals. This, in turn, causes the formation of carcinogens that coat the meat when smoke rises back up from the grill.
  • Cook with Plants. You can heat up vegetables, fruit, or any other plant-based food as hot as you want. This does not create the hazardous compounds that are formed when meat is cooked. Try kabobs with plenty of vegetables on them.
  • USE PROBIOTICS.. Liberal use of probiotics decreases risk of the chemical reactions associated with increased cancer risk...

As a final note, if you're looking for another reason to improve your meaty diet, consider the environment. By eating less meat, you'll improve the health of the planet too!

A Systemic review of 7 major studies finds increased risk of developing bladder cancer is associated with Vitamin D deficiency.

Several far reaching studies have linked vitamin D deficiency to many health problems including autoimmune conditions, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and cancer. Vitamin D plays a major role in the support of healthy teeth and bones, in the absorption of calcium, and helps support a healthy immune system. Previous studies have shown that higher levels of vitamin D - specifically serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D - are associated with a reduced cancer risk.

A systematic review of seven studies was presented on November 8, 2016, at the annual conference of the Society for Endocrinology in Brighton was conducted that demonstrated that a Vitamin D deficiency creates an increasing risk of bladder cancer development.

Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble vitamin produced by the body mainly through exposure to sunlight at a minimum of 5 to 30 minutes a day twice a week. Nine out of 10 Americans fail to meet their daily needs for this vitamin, that is actually a hormone, and don't eat enough foods that naturally contain Vitamin D such as egg yolks, fortified milk, and oily fish. Deficiency is even more widespread for people living in  the northern parts of the country, especially in the winter.

Supplements of the vitamin are available in vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. One tablet of 1,000 IU Vitamin D3  is equivalent to seven three-ounce cans of tuna, or 25 egg yolks, or eight cups of fortified milk, or 25 cups of fortified cereal. The most common supplement is adding vitamin D to calcium, but it is also added to multivitamins, magnesium, fish oil, and joint support products.

In countries having low sunlight levels, it is not possible  to obtain enough Vitamin D from just food. In the United Kingdom, one in five adults are deficient in vitamin D and three in five have low levels. In the winter, 75 percent of  dark-skinned people there have a deficiency.

In the current study, researchers from University Hospital and the University of Warwick reviewed seven studies with 112 to 1125 participants. Five out of seven showed that low levels of vitamin D are linked to an increase in bladder cancer risk. In a separate experiment, researchers looked at cells in the bladder and discovered that they respond to Vitamin D and activate and stimulate an immune response. Dr. Rosemary Bland, the study's lead author, believes that the immune system has a role in identifying abnormal cells prior to their developing into cancer.

Although further clinical studies are necessary to confirm the above findings, the study adds more information to the evidence regarding how important it is to maintain adequate vitamin D levels.
