If you currently have any health condition, or if you want to help prevent any type of future health problem, it's URGENT that you optimize your gut! Balancing and improving the vast number and variety of beneficial microorganisms in and on your body can dramatically boost your MOOD,  immune system and overall health. I continually get reports and witness miraculous health changes that come from utilizing dietary changes,  fermented foods and very high-quality  probiotics! Some of the new research being conducted focuses on relationships between stress, mood disorders, and gastrointestinal disease. Depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders are just of few of the more common problems that have been closely linked to intestinal problems.

Researchers have known for a long time about the “gut/brain axis,” or the direct connection to the brain by way of the 10th cranial nerve. But for some reason, they have always focused on the impact the brain can have on the gut—or control from the “top down.” Even the pharmaceutical companies quickly realized that more than 50 percent of those individuals with irritable bowel syndrome also just happen to have mood disorders. This is why antidepressants are some of the most common pharmaceutical treatments for irritable bowel syndrome. (J Psychiatry Neurosci 09;34(3):230–231)

For years I have known that there is a neurological connection between the gut and the brain—and that you can treat the brain with antidepressants and see improvement in bowel problems. It's a two-way street between the brain and the gut. If you change one area, it makes a difference in the other.

Finally, in working with gut disorders for many years, I have seen major improvements in digestive symptoms AND in concomittent emotional disorders such as: anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism, even schizophrenia! Just recently, studies proving that mood disorders can be controlled by normalizing the bacteria in the bowels.

You know of course about the many of the obvious factors, such as the overuse of antibiotics and other drugs that destroy the body's bacterial flora. Unfortunately, there are many others you cannot really control such as chlorine in public drinking water and instituted pasteurization, gassing, radiation, and the addition of various chemicals to stop bacteria growth in our food products to increase shelf life. The steps taken to eliminate pathogens in our food also happen to destroy the beneficial bacteria as well. One of the culprits the public hasn't been told about is the artificial sweetener sucralose (sold as Splenda). Studies reveal that Splenda reduces the beneficial bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent.  (J Toxicol Environ Health A 08;71(21):1415–1429)

Cancer is the second leading cause of death and disease worldwide, accounting for almost 9 million deaths in 2015, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

New cases of cancer are expected to grow by around 70 percent in the next 20 years.

There are various treatment options available for cancer, but they are not always effective; most of them are toxic, and they tend to have a variety of side effects. In aggressive cases, cancer does not respond to treatment at all, due to stem-like cells. New research, published in the journal Oncotarget, examines the effectiveness of three natural substances, three experimental drugs, and one clinical drug in stopping the growth of these cancer stem cells (CSCs.) One of these treatments was endorsed by Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling decades ago.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Salford in Manchester in the United Kingdom, and was led by Dr. Gloria Bonuccelli.

Vitamin C was found to be up to 10 times more effective than experimental drugs!

In total, the researchers measured the impact of seven substances: the clinical drug stiripentol, three experimental drugs (actinonin, FK866, and 2-DG), and three natural substances (caffeic acid phenyl ester (CAPE), silibinin, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C).)

The research focused on the bioenergetic processes of CSCs, which enable the cells to live and multiply. The study aimed to disrupt the CSCs' metabolism and ultimately prevent their growth.

Of all the substances tested, the team found that actinonin and FK866 were the most effective. However, the natural products were also found to prevent the formation of CSCs, and vitamin C was 10 times more effective than the experimental drug 2-DG.

Additionally, the study revealed that ascorbic acid works by inhibiting glycolysis - the process by which glucose is broken down within the cell's mitochondria and turned into energy for the cell's proliferation since cancer thrives on glucose this is an important finding.

Dr. Michael P. Lisanti, professor of translational medicine at the University of Salford, comments on the findings:

"We have been looking at how to target cancer stem cells with a range of natural substances including silibinin (milk thistle) and CAPE, a honey-bee derivative, but by far the most exciting are the results with vitamin C. Vitamin C is cheap, natural, nontoxic and readily available so to have it as a potential weapon in the fight against cancer would be a significant step."

"This is further evidence that vitamin C and other nontoxic compounds may have a role to play in the fight against cancer," says the study's lead author.

"Our results indicate it is a promising agent for clinical trials, and as an add-on to more conventional therapies, to prevent tumor recurrence, further disease progression, and metastasis," Bonuccelli adds.

Vitamin C has been shown to be a potent, nontoxic, anticancer agent by Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling. However, to the authors' knowledge, this is the first study providing evidence that ascorbic acid can specifically target and neutralize CSCs.

I get frustrated when certain natural agents are disrespected by western medicine. This news is a prime example of something very powerful! A new trial from Deakin University has shown for the first time that improving diet quality can treat major depression.

Director of Deakin's Food and Mood Centre Professor Felice Jacka said the results of her team's new study offered a possible new treatment approach to depression, one of the world's most prevalent and costly medical disorders.

"We've known for some time that there is a clear association between the quality of people's diets and their risk for depression," Professor Jacka said.

"This is the case across countries, cultures and age groups, with healthy diets associated with reduced risk, and unhealthy diets associated with increased risk for depression.

"However, this is the first randomised controlled trial to directly test whether improving diet quality can actually treat clinical depression".

glutenfreediet direct image:dietdirect

A gluten-free diet excludes foods that contain gluten - a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, as well as the byproducts of these grains. According to recent statistics, almost 30% of Americans are avoiding gluten whether they are Celiac sufferers or not in the quest for better health.

For people with celiac disease - an autoimmune condition whereby gluten intake leads to intestinal damage - a gluten-free diet is the only treatment for the condition.

Rice flour is a common substitute for gluten in many gluten-free products. Argos and colleagues point out that rice can bioaccumulate arsenic, mercury, and other potentially harmful toxic metals from water, soil, or fertilizers.

Study co-author Maria Argos, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal Epidemiology.

Exposure to these metals has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other diseases."Despite such a dramatic shift in the diet of many Americans, little is known about how gluten-free diets might affect exposure to toxic metals found in certain foods," note the authors.

Argos and team analyzed the data of 7,471 individuals who were a part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2009 and 2014.

The researchers identified 73 participants aged between 6 and 80 who reported following a gluten-free diet.

Blood and urine samples were taken from all participants and assessed for levels of arsenic and mercury.

The researchers found that levels of each toxic metal were much higher among subjects who followed a gluten-free diet than those who did not eat gluten-free products; mercury levels were 70 percent higher in the blood of gluten-free subjects, while arsenic levels in urine were almost twice as high.

According to Argos, these findings suggest that there may be "unintended consequences of eating a gluten-free diet," though further studies are needed to confirm whether this is the case.

The researchers add that:

Argos points out that there are regulations in Europe that limit arsenic levels in food products, and he suggests that the United States might benefit from similar regulations.

"We regulate levels of arsenic in water, but if rice flour consumption increases the risk for exposure to arsenic, it would make sense to regulate the metal in foods as well," he adds.

I have been advising people to vary and rotate grains for years for this very reason. Eliminating foods unnecessarily can cause toxic build up and a diminished nutritional status.  This study would support following my advice.

The Case Against Marijuana

Many people in these modern times are searching for various ways to escape from reality and life's pressures.

While I will not get into the politics of this highly publicized issue it is clear to me that public sentiment has been driven by emotions rather than actual facts. Most folks joining in the political clamor are not looking out for the poor old guy with glaucoma or Parkinson's but rather a solution to their own desire to drop out of reality for awhile…

Before getting into the medical ramifications of marijuana use, let's review what has happened in Colorado since it's legalization there.

Ahem…Well, fatal car accidents have trebled due to more people driving under the influence. This is the natural consequence of a drug which impairs judgement and can lead to a loss of motor skills.

Marijuana use has also skyrocketed there among teenagers and even expectant mothers.  Both these groups have been mislead into believing that marijuana is safe. This it is not, especially in utero.

In our culture, addiction has been pandemic and it is well established that addicts of heroin and other opiates including prescription started by using alcohol and marijuana.

Medically, let's review some facts.

Fact #1:

Smoking of any substance is deleterious to the lung and respiratory system.  Smoke and secondhand smoke from marijuana is just as or even more dangerous than cigarette smoking!

According to the American Lung Association it will lead to the same problems as cigarette smoking including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and even cancer…

Fact #2:

There is ALSO a plethora of evidence that demonstrates long term damage to the brain itself.

Users frequently report problems with their short term memory both while using and between uses.  Short term memory is the most fragile of all brain functions and is a good indicator that a real and sustained injury has occurred.

Also, the active component, tetrahydrocannibinol, when administered for 5 days or longer results in greatly increased numbers of receptors and changes their chemical binding capacity…no one knows exactly what this means…

Fact #3

Lastly, psychologically, primary changes in motivation and interest are well established in the medical literature.  Is this good?

The legalization of marijuana is in my opinion, another terrible experiment being perpetrated upon the American public for dollars. Please review the facts before jumping on the bandwagon…or suffer the consequences!

baldnessISMPHOTOTAKE

Image:SMPPhototake

When researchers set out to discover the mechanism behind a rare genetic disorder, they never expected to land on new treatment possibilities for graying hair and baldness!  Here's what happened:

Study co-author Dr. Lu Le, of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, and colleagues set out to investigate a disorder called neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), a genetic condition whereby tumors grow on nerves.

The aim of the study was to discover the mechanisms behind tumor growth in NF1. Instead, the researchers identified the processes responsible for hair loss and graying, a discovery that could lead to new treatments for the conditions.

The researchers recently published their findings in the journal Genes and Development.

With hair graying, a 2012 study found that around 6 to 23 percent of adults across the globe can expect to have at least 50 percent gray hair coverage at the age of 50 years.

While hair loss and graying are considered by many as a normal part of aging, for some, the conditions can be highly distressing. Dr. Le and colleagues believe that their discovery could pave the way to new treatments for hair graying and hair loss.

Findings may lead to topical treatments

The team notes that studies had already determined that hair follicles contain stem cells that play a role in hair production, and that a protein called stem cell factor (SCF) is involved in hair pigmentation.

In their study, Dr. Le and team found that once stem cells move to the base of hair follicles, a protein called KROX20 - better known for its role in nerve development - is activated in skin cells that form hair shafts, known as hair progenitor cells.

The researchers found that when KROX20 is activated, the hair progenitor cells produce SCF, which they discovered is crucial for hair pigmentation.

In mice with skin cells that possessed both KROX20 and SCF, the researchers found that the skin cells communicated with melanocyte cells to form pigmented hairs. Melanocyte cells produce melanin, the pigment that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes.

When the researchers deleted SCF in the mice, the researchers found that the rodents grew gray hairs, and these hairs turned white with age. When KROX20-producing cells were erased, the mice did not grow any hair.

The researchers say that their findings indicate that abnormalities in KROX20 and SCF play a significant role in hair loss and graying, though studies in humans are required to confirm their results.

Still, Dr. Le and colleagues believe that their findings show promise for the development of new therapies for baldness and hair graying.

Until then, please visit our store or contact me anytime for help with these issues. Natural treatments exist!

Chronic Stress Linked to Allergy FlareUP!

This may seem like common sense but still, valuable. A NEW study suggests that stress reduction may help to reduce the frequency of allergy flare ups. Amber Patterson, MD, and colleagues at Ohio State University analyzed 179 patients for 12-weeks in order to evaluate the relationship between perceived emotional stress, depressive mood, and allergy symptoms. During the study period 39% of participants had more than one allergy flareup. Results showed that participants in this group had higher stress levels than those in the group who did not experience allergy symptoms. Although there were no significant findings between allergy flares and perceived stress on the same day, a number of sufferers reported allergy flares within days of increased daily stress. No relationship was observed between depressive symptoms and allergy flareups. "Symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes can cause added stress for allergy sufferers, and may even be the root of stress for some," said Dr. Patterson. "While alleviating stress won't cure allergies, it may help decrease episodes of intense symptoms."

My favorite ways to destress? Meditation, yoga and time spent in nature and prayer...

People who are allergic to one type of nut are usually told to avoid all types of tree nuts, however, this may be an unnecessary caution.

Here are some nutty facts for you to consider. Nuts that we eat are called culinary nuts and they are the fruits or seeds of plants. They are known for their fat content, usually classified as "healthy fats", although not all nuts are high in fat. There are four categories of culinary nuts:

  1. True or botanical nuts which are dry and hard-shelled. Hazelnuts, acorns, and chestnuts fall into this category.
  2. Drupes which have fleshy fruit surrounding a stone, or pit, and contain a seed. Almonds are an example.
  3. Gymnosperms which are naked seeds like pine nuts.
  4. Angiosperm seeds which are unenclosed seeds within a larger fruit like peanuts.

Nuts have been consumed by humans all over the globe for thousands of years, as snacks, as garnish, and to add flavor to all kinds of dishes. Today there are eleven kinds of nuts that make up most of the nut market globally.

  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Chestnuts
  • Coconuts
  • Hazelnuts
  • Macadamia Nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Pecans
  • Pine nuts
  • Pistachios
  • Walnuts

That's all good for those who love nuts and regularly consume them, but manypeople have nut allergies. In fact, “in the U.S., approximately three million people report allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. Studies show the number of children living with peanut allergy appears to have tripled between 1997 and 2008.”

Conventional wisdom says that if someone is allergic to one type of nut, they should avoid all nuts. However, in a new study conducted by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI), 109 patients who were allergic to nuts were tested.  The patients in the study were given skin and blood tests to determine if they were allergic to nuts they had never eaten before. The tests showed that indeed, they were sensitive to these other nuts, but then they were given an oral challenge. When asked to eat small amounts of these nuts half of the participants had no adverse reaction.

The symptoms of nut allergies should be taken seriously. At the worst end of the reaction spectrum, anaphylaxis can occur, while other symptoms range from vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, pain, and itchiness. However, the idea that if you're allergic to one kind of nut, you're allergic to them all might not be as clear cut as was previously thought. In addition to highly sensitive blood tests, people with nut allergies can also consider what the experts call an oral food challenge, eating small amounts of nuts to test for reactions.

All of this could be good news for people with an allergy to one type of nut. They may be able to find other nuts to include in their diets. This is especially good news considering that tree nuts may reduce cancer risk.

Next week please visit us to learn other triggers linked to seasonal allergy outbreaks!  See you then!

Midlife Vascular Issues Increase Dementia Risk

A new study indicates that the midlife factors for vascular risk are linked to a heightened risk for dementia later on in life. In particular, hypertension, smoking and diabetes in midlife are tied to a higher risk for dementia. In fact, diabetes in middle age heightens the risk nearly as much as carrying the top risk factor for Alzheimer's, APOEe4 allele. These  results were presented in a media briefing at the 2017 International Stroke Conference.

About the Research

The study's lead researcher, Rebecca F. Gottesman, aimed to gain a better understanding of whether the treatment of specific vascular risk factors makes a difference in terms of decreasing the odds of Alzheimer's. At the moment, other means of reducing the odds of Alzheimer's are insufficient. However, the medical community does understand how to treat and ward off vascular diseases. Gottesman, MD, PhD is an associate professor of epidemiology and neurology at the Johns Hopkins University in Maryland.

This biracial study included participants from four locales within the United States in the late 1980s. The participants were between the ages of 45 and 64. Vascular risk factors were analyzed at baseline. Patients were continually studied at intervals across a 25 year period. Nearly 16,000 participants were in the cohort. Over 1,500 cases of dementia were pinpointed at the assessment that took place between 2011 and 2013.

The Findings

It was expected that the risk for dementia would rise with age. Indeed, this expectation turned out to be the case. African American participants had the highest risk for dementia. Smoking, hypertension, not graduating from high school, diabetes and the presence of the APOE e4 allele were identified as the primary midlife risk factors for eventual dementia. Smoking turned out to be a risk factor for dementia solely in Caucasians. The APOE allele produced a stronger effect in Caucasians than African Americans.

Why the Study is so Important

The study is valuable as it pinpoints factors that can be identified and subsequently modified at the midlife point of an individual's life that play a role in cognitive dysfunction as the aging process occurs. It is clear that the health of one's vascular system in the middle years of his life is vitally important to brain health across the aging process. It is hoped that the study's findings will spur people to alter their habits and obtain treatment for medical conditions to guard against dementia.
