Several NEW studies have confirmed it!

Meditation Leads to Greater Pain Relief Than Morphine

Meditation has been part of the human experience for thousands of years!   The earliest reports of meditation practice date back to about 1500 BCE in India, and became part of Western practice during the Roman Empire.  When neuroscientists have studied meditation, they've discovered some interesting ways in which it affects the physical structure of the brain.  These include effects that can be seen in autonomic functions and neurotransmitters as well as changes in blood flow and brain wave activity.

Meditation has been extensively studied for its effects of stress reduction and other clinical functions, and there have been several preliminary studies in its potential as a pain relief treatment.  Now researchers at Wake Forest have published a study measuring the physical effects of meditation on pain — and it turns out it might be more effective than opiates.

“This is the first study to show that only a little over an hour of meditation training can dramatically reduce both the experience of pain and pain-related brain activation,” said Fadel Zeidan, Ph.D., lead author of the study and post-doctoral research fellow at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

“We found a big effect – about a 40 percent reduction in pain intensity and a 57 percent reduction in pain unpleasantness. Meditation produced a greater reduction in pain than even morphine or other pain-relieving drugs, which typically reduce pain ratings by about 25 percent.”

For the study, 15 healthy volunteers who had never meditated attended four, 20-minute classes to learn a meditation technique known as focused attention. Focused attention is a form of mindfulness meditation where people are taught to attend to the breath and let go of distracting thoughts and emotions.

Both before and after meditation training, study participants' brain activity was examined using a special type of imaging — arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL MRI) — that captures longer duration brain processes, such as meditation, better than a standard MRI scan of brain function. During these scans, a pain-inducing heat device was placed on the participants' right legs. This device heated a small area of their skin to 120° Fahrenheit, a temperature that most people find painful, over a 5-minute period.

The scans taken after meditation training showed that every participant's pain ratings were reduced, with decreases ranging from 11 to 93 percent, Zeidan said.

I love this kind of research.  I don't think that progess be defined as genetic engineering, pharmaceuticals,  robots, and flying cars.  I'm excited at the myriad means in which ancient techniques for a variety of things are being revived in a modern context and given the due scientific investigation and validation they deserve.  I think there's a rich area for research into improving people's lives by studying the practices of our ancestors and refining those practices with some of the modern tools at our disposal.

Top News!  Olive Oil Nourishes Brain Cells!

Alzheimer's Disease is a neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by accumulation of beta-amyloid and tau proteins in the brain.  Oleocanthal is a phenolic component found abundantly in extra-virgin olive oil; some previous studies suggest that the compound may exert neuroprotective effects.  Amal Kaddoumi, from the University of Louisiana (Louisiana, USA), and colleagues completed in vitro and in vivo studies that demonstrate the ability for oleocanthal to two proteins- P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and LDL lipoprotein receptor related protein-1 (LRP1) – as well as key enzymes believed to be critical in removing beta-amyloid from the brain. The study investigators conclude that: “these findings provide experimental support that potential reduced risk of AD associated with extra-virgin olive oil could be mediated by enhancement of [beta-amyloid] clearance from the brain.”

What are you eating for dinner right NOW?

If you are really interested in changing your diet for the better, it is best to start simply instead of making radical changes all at once. I recommend doing one of these steps every two to four weeks. Following are some simple steps for improving your diet and health.

Step 1: Pay attention in the grocery store: Start reading labels! Become familiar with what you are eating. Notice that all the fresh foods are on the outside aisles and all the processed foods are on the inside aisles. Eventually, most of your cart will be filled from the outside aisles, which makes shopping so much easier!  I have not even been in those aisles....EVER.

Step 2: Eliminate everything in your diet that has hydrogenated fats in any form. Partially hydrogenated is just as bad as fully hydrogenated.

Step 3: Eliminate everything in your diet that has corn syrup in it, high fructose or otherwise be careful with other syrups and sugar replacers even if " natural".

Step 4: Eliminate everything in your diet that has artificial sweeteners except for natural stevia.

Step 5: Eliminate every grain in your diet that is not a whole grain. Don't be fooled by multi-grains that aren't whole grains. Who cares if its 10 different grains if they are all stripped of their nutrients? Labels will say 100% WHOLE blah...

Step 6: Eliminate white sugar from your diet Avoid foods with contents ending in ose in the first four ingredients.

Step 7: Eliminate low-fat and no-fat versions of your favorite foods from your diet. (yes, that's right!!! Your body will crave less fat since it is getting more of the right fats and you will want less, you'll also ingest far less sugar. )

Step 8: Eat as much produce as you can that is grown in your area when it is in season. Buy organic as much as possible.

Step 9: Rotate your foods. Don't eat the same food more than 3 times in one week. (This is particularly hard to do with breakfast foods.)  Try new WHOLE foods frequently.

Step 10: Don't eat anything with ingredients that your great-grandmother wouldn't have recognized if is not a whole food strictly avoid.

While you are trying to improve your diet it is very important to get all your nutrients. Visit our vitamin aisle of our natural pharmacy for FREE shipping, and top professional products at amazing prices!

Gray Hair

Some people consider gray hair as something that makes them looked distinguished; for others, it's a reminder that they're getting older.Scientists have put a lot of effort into investigating the cause of gray hair, and they believe they've gotten to the root of the problem. Hair gets its color from a pigment called melanin, which is produced by melanocyte cells in the hair follicles. Researchers have discovered that melanocytes endure cumulative damage over the years, which eventually leaves them unable to produce melanin. Studies have cited DNA damage and a buildup of hydrogen peroxide in the follicles as possible causes of this disruption in melanin production. Without melanin, the new hair that grows in has no pigment, which makes it appear gray, white, or silver.

Some people start to go gray young -- as early as their teens. When graying begins usually is determined by genes, so if your mother or father became gray early, you may too. He shou wu  one of several chinese herbs can be helpful in restoring color to grayed hair.

Hair Loss

Normally, hair goes through a regular growth cycle. During the anagen phase, which lasts three to four years, the hair grows. During the telogen phase, which lasts about three months, the hair rests. At the end of the telogen phase, the hair falls out and is replaced by new hair.

The average person loses about 100 hairs each day. Hair loss also can have other causes, including drugs or disease.

As they age, men tend to lose the hair on top of their head, which eventually leaves a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the sides. This type of hair loss is called male-pattern baldness. It's caused by genes (from both parents -- the idea that men take after their mother's father is a myth) and it's fueled by the male hormone, testosterone. In female-pattern baldness, the hair loss is different -- it thins throughout the top of the scalp, leaving the hair in front intact.

A number of disorders can cause the hair to fall out. People who have an autoimmune condition called alopecia areata lose hair on their scalp, as well as on other parts of their body. Other health conditions that can cause excess hair loss include:

  • Medications such as antidepressants, retinoids, NSAIDs, blood thinners, birth control and other hormonal treatments, high blood pressure pills medications, chemotherapy, and radiation.
  • Severe infections
  • Major surgery
  • Overactive or underactive thyroid
  • Other hormonal problems
  • Severe stress
  • Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus
  • Fungal and yeast infections of the scalp
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Compulsive hair pulling called trichotillomania

Hair lost to male-pattern and female-pattern baldness won't grow back on its own, but acupuncture and herbs can be extremely helpful. See my article about stopping hair loss in its tracks for more information.

Hair Damage

Blow-drying, straightening, highlighting, and perming regularly can wreak havoc on hair, leaving it brittle, broken, and unmanageable. Split ends and dry hair are just two casualties of over zealous styling.

Excessive styling and heat can cause split ends, which occur when the protective outermost layer of hair (the cuticle) is damaged and peels back. Some treatments for split ends include:

  • Brush gently with a soft, flexible hairbrush; don't overbrush.
  • Avoid towel-drying. If you do dry your hair with a towel, rub it gently.
  • Use a conditioner, and leave on a deep conditioner about once a week.

Hair needs moisture and a certain amount of oil to keep it looking healthy. A number of things can dry out hair, including:

  • Washing it too often
  • Using a harsh shampoo
  • Excessive blow-drying or use of a curling iron or straightening iron
  • Exposure to sun, wind, and dry air
  • Perms and dyes
  • Nutritional Deficiencies
  • Medications
  • Chronic inflammation

To keep the moisture in your hair, try these tips:

  • Don't wash your hair every day unless you have a scalp condition such as dandruff which needs daily shampooing for control. When you do wash your hair, use a gentle shampoo that's designed to infuse moisture into dry hair. Also, use a conditioner daily.
  • Limit blow-drying and use of hot irons, hot rollers, or curling irons.
  • Increase the time between hair treatments, such as dyes and perms.
  • Wear a hat on cold, windy days and put on a bathing cap when swimming.

Greasy Hair

The scalp contains a natural oil called sebum, which helps keep the skin, scalp and hair lubricated. Sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands. Sometimes these glands work overtime and produce too much oil, leading to a greasy scalp. Chronic inflammation and seborrheic dermatitis also can cause hair to appear greasy. Greasy hair can look dull, limp, and lifeless, and it may be more difficult to manage. To treat greasy hair, try washing with a gentle shampoo that is specially formulated to control sebum.

More than 90% of all adolescents and almost 25% of all adults suffer from acne. Many are asking if they are sentenced to the ritual of tackling the symptoms or is there a natural health remedy that will cure acne. Is there a natural safer alternative to the endless use of creams and lotions and the side effects of drug treatments?

Most dermatologists claim that acne cannot be cured. They specialize in treating the symptoms but have no idea how to cure the internal cause of acne. By applying medications and creams that deal merely with the symptoms while ignoring the source or the internal cause of the disease, acne will never be truly cured.

The hormone connection.

The surge of hormones at puberty causes a change in the activity and size of the glands that produce sebum. Excess sebum causes the bacteria that normally inhabit the hair follicles to multiply and irritate the follicle lining leading to an inflammatory reaction. This results in the formation of pustules and cysts commonly known as 'zits' or pimples. Non-inflammatory acne appears as whiteheads or blackheads. Acne sufferers are understandably desperate for a natural acne cure.

The hormone testosterone that is normally thought of as a male hormone but is present in both sexes has been identified as a chief trigger of acne development. It is testosterone that stimulates the activity of the oil glands creating an oilier skin more prone to acne breakouts.

Women can get acne that flares up just before their period is due. Studies have confirmed that acne inflammation can increase 25% between day 22 and 28 of the monthly cycle. A sharp drop in estrogen and rise in testosterone occurs during ovulation, menstruation, pregnancy, just before and during the menopause.

The reason why some men continue to get acne in adult life is unclear but a continued bacterial or hormonal imbalance, stress, genetics, certain medications and heavy perspiration are ALL thought to contribute. At one time it was thought that chocolate and fried food was the cause but researchers have proven that this is not true although nutritionally they are foods that are best avoided.

Ultimately, every disease results from a breakdown within your body. All major diseases and chronic conditions are warning signs of something very fundamentally wrong inside. Without eliminating the source of your acne condition, you will never get rid of your acne. Without fixing the internal problem that is causing your acne, you may find temporary relief, but your acne will always come back and typically worsen over time.

Good nutrition helps to balance hormones. A vitamin A deficiency contributes to congestion of the skin and a zinc deficiency leads to a reduced ability to fight infection of the pores. A diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables avoiding sugar, fried and high fat foods is essential. Drink 6 - 8 glasses of filtered water every day.

Now, there are two choices you can make - you can:

1.Ignore the warning signs. - big mistake! The internal imbalance that caused your acne will, in most cases, turn into a chronic condition. Now instead of just having acne you'll start having other hormonal imbalance or toxic overload related symptoms in addition to acne. Because the internal problem is not fixed, the disease symptoms get more and more intense.

2. Listen to your body and start fixing the internal problem that causes your acne to appear in the first place; you will not only get rid of your acne you will also achieve beautiful, healthy, even toned clear skin complexion, re-balance your body and prevent future hormonal or toxic overload related conditions.

We now live a 'far-from-natural' lifestyle. There are over 300 synthetic industrial chemicals present in our bodies that did not exist 50 years ago. We are filled with toxins from the food, and medication we ingest and use.

The Natural Health Remedy to Cure Acne

The natural health remedy that will cure acne is one that fixes the internal condition that causes your acne. The remedy will include a healthy diet, lifestyle, detox and hormone balancing. Your acne will cease to exist and you feel as healthy and attractive as ever!

It doesn't matter what type of acne you have. Whether you suffer from: acne vulgaris, acne Conglobata, acne Rosacea, Acne Fulminans, Blackheads, Whiteheads, Papules, Pustules, Nodules or Cysts: The principles required to cure your acne are basically to identify the cause and to restore the imbalance.   There is an acne cure but it DOES take time and commitment.

When you are ready to do what it takes to heal your acne from the inside out I invite you to call us and schedule a free consultation.  Visit my own acne skin aisle of my natural pharmacy for products we have developed for our clients which have been very highly regarded.
