I have always known this, intuitively, and now a major study published in the prestigious medical journal the Lancet substantiates this. Alcohol use is a leading risk factor for global disease burden and causes substantial health loss. We found that the risk of all-cause mortality, and of cancers specifically, rises with increasing levels of consumption, and the level of consumption that minimizes health loss is zero,” the study concluded. “These results suggest that alcohol control policies might need to be revised worldwide, refocusing on efforts to lower overall population-level consumption.”

Source: Bernardo Zucco

The study actually found that moderate drinking might protect against heart disease.

But it also found out that can lead to other negative health outcomes.    This includes a risk for cancer and injuries.alcoholSource: The Lancet: GBD 2016 Alcohol Collaborators

“Previous studies have found a protective effect of alcohol on some conditions, but we found that the combined health risks associated with alcohol increases with any amount of alcohol. The strong association between alcohol consumption and the risk of cancer, injuries, and infectious diseases offset the protective effects for heart disease in our study,” the study's lead author, Dr. Max Griswold of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), University of Washington, said. “Although the health risks associated with alcohol start off being small with one drink a day, they then rise rapidly as people drink more.”Please join me next week for a discussion about: a very TOXIC oil most people think is beneficial. collagen-structure

You've heard it from health experts, beauty gurus, and possibly even your social media friends. Collagen is the latest buzzword on every one's lips, and it can now be found in just about everything — from creams and cosmetics, to powders and pills. And the truth is, this may be one instance where the hype is actually factual.

As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen protein is available in your muscles, skin, blood, bones, cartilage, and ligaments. You may want to consider squeezing in an extra serving of this vital protein for several reasons, as collagen is a building block that:

·         promotes skin elasticity

·         holds together your bones and muscles

·         protects your organs

·         provides structure to joints and tendons

The good news is that your body produces collagen on a regular basis. But, it does slow down with age. Other lifestyle habits that can bring collagen production to a screeching halt include smoking, sun exposure, and an unhealthy diet. Some health conditions may also deplete your collagen storage. And without this important building block, you may start to see wrinkles and sagging skin, or even experience arthritis.

Read on,  to discover five specific benefits you may experience if you take the time to up your collagen consumption.

Top five benefits of collagen

1. May ease joint pain

In one study,  participants took a type II collagen supplement made from chicken necks for 90 days. Results showed that osteoarthritis symptoms decreased by 40 percent while the severity of symptoms dropped by an impressive 33 percent.

Another, with the same collagen supplement, participants with severe RA, saw a reduced number of swollen and tender joints —  some experienced complete remission. Importantly, the supplement was undenatured, meaning that the amino acids weren't broken down as a result of processing and exposure to high heat.

2. May reverse skin aging

One benefit of collagen is its ability to promote glowing, vibrant skin. This essential protein provides elasticity to the skin, helping it to appear more youthful and healthy. But as you get older and collagen production declines, fine lines, loose skin, and dryness can occur. So what happens if you increase your collagen intake with supplements?

One study randomly chose 46 of 69 women, ages 35-55 years old, to take a collagen hydrolysate supplement. The rest of the group took a placebo. The women who took the collagen showed an improvement in skin elasticity within four weeks.

The same manufacturer also conducted another study with the same supplement, which significantly reduced wrinkles after just eight weeks.

3. Helps build muscle and burn fat

Collagen is a major component of muscle tissue, so it should come as no surprise that it can have a big impact when it comes to building muscle mass. Plus, collagen also contains a concentrated amount of glycine an amino acid involved in creatine synthesis This provides muscles with the fuel needed to power through your workout. So what happens when you add collagen to your workout routine?

There's not much research on collagen and exercise, but a study looked at collagen supplements in 53 older males with , a condition where you lose muscle mass due to aging. After 12 weeks, those who took supplements along with resistance training saw an increase in fat loss and muscle strength more than the placebo group.

4. May reduce cellulite

Besides keeping your skin healthy and glowing, collagen may also help improve the appearance of stubborn cellulite. Cellulite occurs when the layer of fat under the skin pushes up against the connective tissue, creating a dimpled or lumpy appearance on the skin.

One study manufacturers was to discover what type I collagen would do for cellulite. They randomly assigned 105 women, ages 24-50, to take collagen peptides for six months. Those who did demonstrated a clear improvement in skin texture and waviness.

While it seems promising, more studies are needed to confirm.

5. May improve digestive health

Collagen is in the gut's connective tissue and can help support and strengthen the protective lining of your digestive tract. This is critically important because alterations in the barrier function of your intestine, also known as a permeable gut. Which can allow food particles into the systemic circulation which can result in, inflammation.

In fact, another study found that GI patients were more likely to have lower levels of serum collagen. So the current theory is that by increasing your intake of collagen, you could help build up the tissues that line your gastrointestinal tract and benefit your gut. However, current research is limited on the direct effects of collagen supplementation on the digestive system.

How to add collagen:

Here are a few easy ways to kick up your collagen intake:

Collagen Type I & III Powder 7 oz by Collagen M.D.1.   Experiment with bone broth

Which is made by simmering bones to help extract the flavor and beneficial nutrients. Not only is it an excellent source of collagen, but it's also tasty and easy to add to your diet by using it to make soups and stews, whole grains like rice and quinoa, and even to moisten leftovers.

2. Try out powdered gelatin

Gelatin is essentially a cooked form of collagen, and powdered gelatin can be a quick and convenient way to bump up your collagen consumption. It can be mixed into any liquid, including soups, stews, and broths.

3. Supplement with collagen peptides

Collagen peptides are another easy option to get your fix of this important amino acid. Most brands sell hydrolyzed collagen peptides, which means that the amino acids in collagen have been broken down so that they're more easily digested and absorbed.

Collagen powder can also be added to smoothies, hot beverages, or baked goods to pump some extra protein into your day. Here's the one I use. coffee-156158__340

Worldwide,  coffee is among the most popular of beverages, enjoyed by millions. It is estimated that 3.4 billion pounds are consumed each year within the USA alone. Coffee is one of the best studied beverage to offer  some health effects. But how much is too much, does it carry risk of contributing to things such as cancer, and what is behind this new proposed warning label for coffee?

For the most part coffee research suggests it's okay at least for most people. A recent study has suggested that coffee drinkers may even live longer regardless if it was caffeinated or not, with the authors concluding that health benefits of coffee go beyond caffeine. During 2016,  W.H.O removed coffee off  its possible carcinogen listing. There has been several articles describing Proposition 65 which was passed in California during 1986 requiring notification to consumers of possible links to cancers; businesses must provide a warning label when exposing any consumer to any item on a list of potentially harmful chemicals, of which acrylamide is listed which is found within coffee produced during the roasting process. There are both sides to coffee with some being for and some against. There has not been a study to convincingly link acrylamide found in coffee to risk of cancer, many studies have explored the potential of links between cancer and coffee with the most damning suggesting hot beverages may increase risk of esophageal cancer. Amounts of acrylamide in coffee varies and is small compared to foods that cause cancer in animals, in addition there are other sources of acrylamide such as bread, breakfast cereals, and cigarettes that don't get any attention.

In L.A, a  judge ruling new labeling requirements for coffee states that coffee companies did not prove that acrylamide was safe, meaning the judge asked coffee makers to prove a negative absence of risk, as well as discounting research on links to coffee consumption and benefits. Proving a negative is not an easy task and part of the reason many theories persist.  While the plaintiff offered evidence of harm, it is suggested that since the coffee companies could not show it was safe and acrylamide is listed on the long list of potentially harmful chemicals the judge ruled in favor of the warning label with the defendants failing to satisfy their burden of proof.  Additional legal action is expected, and it may be some time before California's plans with regard to warning labels are settled. There are things which can be done to limit acrylamide exposure such as eating less fried food, avoiding burnt or charred foods, not smoking, and avoiding instant coffee. Maybe coffee makers will come up with a new process to roast coffee, if so new studies will need to be conducted as it is not known if changing how coffee is roasted will change its effect on health, and as is  the case of potentially carcinogenic toxins additional research will be needed to determine if the amount of acrylamide  matters a little, a lot, or not at all.  Next week join me to discuss the TRUE benefits of collagen...you do not want to miss this!  SignUP here!  PS: Visit our store...it is currently in the process of being revamped and redesigned for an easy and seamless shopping experience. THANK YOU!  FREE shipping on all orders.

hair blank

Having  too many bad hair days lately?  Well, here are some little known reasons your hair is not up to speed.  Read on for some tips and helpers!

HORMONES:

A few hormones affect hair health,  but possibly the most important is cortisol.  Cortisol is also known as the “stress” hormone.  High quantities are responsible for thinning hair, hair loss, and lack of growth.   Reducing stress is paramount to correcting this situation.

Thyroid conditions,  perimenopause, and postpartum hormonal shifts will all affect hair health adversely.  All of these conditions respond extremely well to naturopathy and individualized treatment.  One medical condition is called androgenic alopecia which is male or female pattern baldness.  Nutriceuticals are very, very helpful in restoring hair loss if the correct one is chosen and taken faithfully for several months.

INFLAMMATION

Inflammatory conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and ringworm, and atopic dermatitis are also responsible for myriad hair problems and can be dealt with effectively by getting to the root, no pun intended , of the problems.

DIET/LIFESTYLE

Sleep deprivation, stress, improper eating, lack of exercise, recreational drinking and smoking will all show up in lackluster hair.  A diet high in healthy fats, lean protein, and a good and varied amount of organic fruits and vegetables will give you the basic building blocks of healthy hair building.  Iron deficiency in women is one of the most prevalent reasons for hair loss.  Foods such as: beef, liver, lentils and black beans are great sources. Spinach does not help as the phytic acid causes iron to be bound so it is not available to the human body.

If you would like my guidance, please schedule an appointment at 847 5774455.  If you would prefer to DIY, please visit our store for my extensive products…FREE shipping! Next week join me for a discussion for a very popular beverage that now will carry a warning label…SignUP!  You do not want to miss this!

A new article advising Americans how to protect themselves against mosquitoes, ticks and other disease-carrying bugs, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends five effective repellents.

Four of them are synthetic chemicals. The fifth, which the agency calls a “biopesticide,” is the all natural oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

The oil, derived from the leaves of a lemon eucalyptus tree, is found in the “natural” versions of many name-brand mosquito repellents such as Repelhttps://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=returntonow-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B004N59OFU and Off Botanicalsand is sold by itself as an essential oilhttps://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=returntonow-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B01LYDCW86, which can be mixed into homemade bug repellents.

The CDC recognizes only the following 5 active ingredients as providing “repellent activity sufficient to help people reduce the bites of disease-carrying mosquitoes” and “reasonably long-lasting protection.”

  • DEET
  • Picaridin
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus
  • IR3535
  • 2-undecanone

While DEET has gained a reputation as the ultimate mosquito repellent, there are several compelling reasons not to use it:

1. Common side effects. A study of Everglades National Park employees in the late 1980s found that one in four experienced negative health effects after applying DEET. Effects included rashes, skin irritation, numb or burning lips, nausea, headaches, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.

2. It's becoming less effective. DEET isn't as effective as it once was, as mosquitoes are developing resistance to it.

A landmark study recently revealed that while the insects are initially repelled by it, they ignore it if they're exposed to it again.

Earlier research showed some mosquitoes had developed genetic immunity to the substance, but this study found they could develop resistance to DEET after just a few hours.

3. Serious harm to children. In children, the most frequently reported symptoms of DEET toxicity reported to poison control centers including headaches, tremors, lethargy, seizures, involuntary movements, and convulsions.

Canada's federal health department states no child under six months old should be using DEET, and that those who are six months through 12 years old should avoid products that contain more than 10 percent DEET.

4. DNA damage. A Duke University study found frequent and prolonged DEET exposure led to diffuse brain cell death and behavioral changes. The experts concluded that humans should stay away from products containing it.

5. Nervous system damage. A French study found DEET can interfere with enzymes crucial for nervous system function.

6. Environmental harm.  A recent U.S. Geological Survey report on water contaminants listed DEET as one of the substances most frequently found in America's streams. The EPA regards DEET as “slightly toxic” to birds, fish, and aquatic invertebrates. In high concentrations, it can be extremely toxic to insects and fish.

Here's a recipe for homemade mosquito repellent:

  • 1 Glass spray bottle
  • 25 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oilhttps://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=returntonow-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B01LYDCW86
  • 4 oz. witch hazel or 2 oz. coconut oil (use oil if you're going to be exposed to water)
  1. Mix the ingredients together in your glass spray bottle.
  2. Shake well before applying.
  3. Apply to clothes and exposed skin. Be careful to not spray in eyes.  Don't miss our article next Wednesday regarding: Unknown factors that affect your hair health! It is no secret that the US government has been doing very little to protect it's citizens. This is in far contrast to other countries which seem to have the best interest of it's society as heart.  The FDA has also fallen down on the job, due to political pressure or other unfathomable reasons.  Following are 7 foods that are banned in most countries but still in the United States food supply.

1. FARM-RAISED SALMON
While farm-raised salmon is big business here in the US, it is illegal in Australia and New Zealand. Because the fish are basically mass produced, they are fed synthetic astaxanthin made from petrochemicals.
While it may be safe for fish to eat, the stuff has not been approved for human consumption.
2. PROCESSED FOODS CONTAINING ARTIFICIAL FOOD COLORS AND DYES
Norway, Austria, and other countries in the European Union have banned the sale of foods containing harmful dyes like red 40, yellow 5, yellow 6 and/or blue 2 which happen to be the most commonly used food dyes in the US. They have been linked to toxicity and hazardous health effects.
Kraft was put on blast for using yellow 5 in their famous macaroni and cheese recipe here in the U.S. It was never present in boxes sold in Europe.
3. OLESTRA/OLEAN
Created by Procter & Gamble as a substitute for cooking oil, Olestra prevents the body from absorbing vitamins. It is banned in the UK and in Canada for its harmful side effects, including stomach cramps and leaky bowels.
4. PRESERVATIVES BHA AND BHT
BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are preservatives that are often found in long-shelf life products like breakfast cereals and chewing gums.
The UK has banned the use of BHA in baby food and both BHA and BHT are banned in Japan and parts of the European Union.
5. BVO
Artificial flavor and color isn't the only thing that shows up in soda in the US. Mountain Dew and other citrus-flavored soft drinks contain BVO, or brominated vegetable oil. The chemical was actually created to be a flame retardant and consumed in large quantities, can cause damage to your nervous system.
It is banned as a food additive in Europe and Japan.
6. ARSENIC-LACED CHICKEN
Arsenic-based drugs can be used in some animal feed in the US because they can help animals grow quicker. They also can create pinker flesh in animals. It appears in commercial grade chicken feed since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated these products are safe.
In the European Union, arsenic-based feeds are banned as are the sale of chickens who have been fed from them.
7. POTASSIUM BROMATE
In the US, potassium bromate or brominated flour is a flour-bulking agent used in making rolls, wraps, flatbread, bread crumbs, and bagel chips. It helps to strengthen dough and reduce baking time.

Unfortunately there are many, many more...your best health practice, as always is to avoid processed foods and purchase organic foods from reputable farms and companies with minimal ingredients. There really is no other way to avoid most of these chemicals.  This is our last topic for July.  Join us on August 1st when I will publish our new schedule for the month.  Please SIGN UP, so you don't miss a thing!  Also: Please visit our store where we offer hundreds of handpicked products with great discounts and FREE shipping!  Best of Health!

Recently, an 82-year-old woman who suffered from dementia, and didn't recognize her own son has miraculously gotten her memory back after changing her diet. This is her story as reported by the Daily Mirror UK.

When his mother's condition became so severe that for her own safety she had to be kept in a hospital, Mark Hatzer almost came to terms with losing another parent.

Sylvia had lost her memory and become agitated  at one point, she had even phoned the police  accusing the nurse who were caring for her of kidnap.

A change in diet, which was comprised of high amounts of blueberries and walnuts, has had such a strong impact on Sylvia's condition that her recipes are now being shared by the Alzheimer's Society.

Sylvia also began incorporating other healthy foods, including broccoli, kale, spinach, sunflower seeds, green tea, oats, sweet potatoes and even dark chocolate with a high percentage of cacao. All of these foods are known to be beneficial for brain health.

Mark and Sylvia devised this diet together after deciding that the medication was not enough, they looked into the research showing that rates of dementia are much lower in mediterranean countries and copied their eating habits.

“In certain countries Alzheimer's is virtually unheard of because of their diet.

“Everyone knows about fish but there is also blueberries, strawberries, Brazil nuts and walnuts – these are apparently shaped like a brain to give us a sign that they are good for the brain.”

There were also some cognitive exercises that Mark and his mother would do together like jigsaw puzzles crosswords and meeting people in social situations, Sylvia would also exercise by using a pedaling device outfitted for her chair.

Mark said, “It wasn't an overnight miracle, but after a couple of months she began remembering things like birthdays and was becoming her old self again, more alert, more engaged.  Just goes to prove that natural medicine and diet can reverse many conditions that western medicine cannot alleviate. If you would like to set up a consultation please call us at 847 577 4455.

Did you know that despite the invention of sunscreen, cases of skin cancers have doubled? Elizabeth Plourde, Ph.D., is a California-based scientist who has shown that malignant melanoma and all other skin cancers increased significantly with ubiquitous sunscreen use over a 30-year period. Sunscreens contain chemicals that are known carcinogens and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC).

Sun Exposure is Helpful In Moderation

Firstly, the sun doesn't harm us. It only nourishes us. There's even really good science to prove this. One of the latest major studies was published by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden in 2014.
They conducted a study that found women who avoided lying out in the sun were actually TWICE as likely to die compared to those who make sunbathing a daily ritual.

This wasn't a small study either. It looked at 30,000 women for a period of 20 years!

Types of Sun Rays

Ultraviolet B rays (UVB) are the primary cause of sunburn and non-melanoma skin cancers such as squamous cell carcinoma. The chemicals that form a product's sun protection factor are aimed at blocking those UVB rays.

Ultraviolet A rays (UVA) penetrate deeper into the skin and are harder to block. Scientists know less about the dangers of UVA radiation and this could potentially be very dangerous. The general consensus now is that while UVA ray damage is much less obvious than UVB, it is probably a lot more serious!!

False Sense Of Security

A sunscreen lotion's SPF rating has little to do with the product's ability to shield the skin from UVA rays (this is because UVA and UVB protection do not harmonize). High-SPF products suppress sunburn from UVB but not other types of sun damage. Therefore they tend to lull users into staying in the sun longer and overexposing themselves to both UVA and UVB rays.
Since people think they are ‘protected' they tend to extend their time in the sun well past the point when users of low-SPF products or natural oils head indoors. As a result, while the users of conventional sunscreen may get less UVB-inflicted sunburns as unprotected sunbathers, they are more likely to absorb more damaging UVA radiation (which studies are still inconclusive as to cancer-causing effects).

Philippe Autier, a scientist formerly with the International Agency for Research on Cancer and part of the World Health Organization, has conducted numerous studies on sunbathers and believes that high-SPF products spur “profound changes in sun behavior” that may account for the increased melanoma risk found in some studies. We think we can now spend the whole day at the beach without having to retreat to cover.

The Chemicals involved:

High SPF products require higher concentrations of sun-filtering chemicals than low SPF sunscreens or natural oils. Some of these ingredients may pose health risks when they penetrate the skin. They have been linked to tissue damage, potential hormone disruption and may trigger allergic skin reactions especially oxybenzones.

If studies showed that high SPF products were better at reducing skin damage and skin cancer risk, then perhaps this extra chemical exposure might be justified. But since they don't offer any benefit, then choosing alternative sunscreens really start to look a whole lot more appealing.

Natural Sun Protection

When we are outside the light that comes into our eyes sends signals to the pituitary gland which triggers hormones to be released for skin protection.

Sun exposure if most damaging between 10AM and 4PM so cover up with a hat shirt etc during those times.  Mineral sunscreens will offer some benefit from burning but covering up at peak times is critical.  Natural oils such as carrot and raspeberry as well as grapeseed offer sun protection in the vicinities of 4 to 11 SPF. Enjoy the sun, as in all things, in moderation.

If you've not heard of the class of antibiotics called “Fluoroquinolones, you need to. Really.

But just what are these drugs? They go by many names, Cipro, Levaquin, Avalox, basically every generic ending in “quin”, “oxacin,” or ”ox.” While the FDA has now updated their warning on these antibiotics (July 2016) citeing, “multiple system damage that may be irreversible,” people are still taking them and though the info is there, and doctors are still prescribing them even for routine disorders.

Fluoroquinolones were intended to be a last resort type of drug when all other options failed. That means if you had a UTI and you were allergic to penicillin- they still would have found something else to give you.

The reason they were supposed to be a last resort is because of the severe damage they do to the body; they actually damage the DNA mitochondrial repair cells (the cells that heal any damage to the body). So, if you take these drugs you are effectually damaging the very cells that are supposed to repair damaged cells and tissue. Flouroquinolones are also able to cross the blood-brain barrier which can result in psychiatric events, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

And one last warning, the damage is cumulative. “The more exposures you have to these antibiotics, the more damage is done to your body. Not just for some people, ALL people. A hundred percent of people who take a Fluoroquinolone antibiotic, show changes in blood flow to the tendon, cartilage, and ligaments in their bodies.  The damage is done. There is no cure. No treatment. No relief. No specialist even.”  Have a safe and happy 4th!
