This week we will discuss boosting a slow metabolism.  There are many reasons for slowed metabolic activity and almost all of them correspond to lifestyle practices.  Read on to learn about the safest, most effective ways to boost your metabolism for good.

People who are facing weight loss challenges may be helped by the dietary supplement conjugated linoleic acid, known as CLA, which is reported to help body fat in people who are overweight.

In my practice, I have found that most people with slowed metabolisms have extremely high body fat percentages. CLA in conjunction with an exercise program,  appears to help some, but not others, and its greatest value may be as a natural component of a healthy diet.  Along with CLA, check out these surprising tips for helping with your weight loss program:

  • Conjugated Linoleic Acid is an omega-6 fatty acid.  It has become well known in recent years as a weight loss supplement. Some researchers believe CLA inhibits fat cells from getting larger by affecting the specific enzymes that aid in fat storage.  Studies have shown that CLA could be effective in short-term weight loss, and spot reduction. But, CLA can also be derived from food itself.  The best sources of CLA are found in butter, beef, veal, button mushrooms, sour cream, lamb, cottage cheese and safflower/sunflower oils.
  • Do interval training during your cardio for 60-90seconds by turning up the volume of your work out.  Research shows this can raise your metabolism for 14 hours after your workouts.
  • Dump your java in the morning and go for the green. Green Tea,  that is: offers several health advantages.  Green tea extract may increase metabolism (energy expenditure) enough to assist with weight loss and fat oxidation. Some of the weight loss benefits of green tea stem from caffeine in the product, but other healthful attributes go beyond that. Assisting with daytime alertness, and with healthy compounds of its own, green tea has no known adverse side effects—a real bonus for a weight loss aid!

  • Get it spicy: Hot spices like cayenne pepper and curcumin raise the thermogenic effect of food and raise your basal metabolism.  They can wreck havoc with some digestive complaints so be careful to be mindful and moderate.
  • Get sunlight in the morning. It will raise your metabolism and mood all day.
  • Get enough sleep.  At least 8 hours. Too little sleep will lower your metabolism and raise your stress levels and extremely unhealthy combination.
  • Water:  You have heard it all your life, drinking plain ole water is a healthy habit.  Water contains no sugar or added ingredients, can aid in digestion, helps you feel full longer, and is a super substitute for pop.  Add a twist of lemon for taste.  Drinking less sugary drinks and more water may help you enjoy the more subtle tastes of your food a little better.
  • Laugh more....you'll burn up to 20% more calories every day.
  • Stand versus sit.  I try to stand or walk versus sitting. It again will burn many more calories per day.

There are  many factors which can make or break your metabolism. Just getting conscious is an excellent first step.

Last month,  Scientific American published some brand new European research findings.  Several of these studies were the largest studies on the microbes that inhabit healthy peoples large intestines.  The microbiome that inhabits the intestines assists with everything from digestion to immune processes and many other things.

In one study, researchers learned that preferences for dark versus milk chocolate had slightly different microbiology which influenced these differences though they don't know why.  They also learned that there were major differences which occurred with drug usage,  such as the diabetes drug Metformin, female hormones, or antihistamines.

In another study, 14 different microbes were found.  Researchers had hoped to glean enough information to manipulate the microbiome for greater health but the study offered more questions than answers.  Especially with regard to prescription drugs and their effect on bacteria levels.  They postulated that these levels would have major impact on prescription drugs and the side effects they can cause.

There is also the correlation of vaginal birth versus C section in newborns.  Healthy microbes from the mother are thought to coat their babies leading to a more robust bacterial starting point in non C section mothers.

Another study highlighted stool transit time or the time it takes for food to digest.  They found that variations in this transit time significantly alters the microbiology in the gut.

For example, Parkinson's patients have a signature microbiome that may be helpful in the early stages of the disease.  They also learned that two types of IBS have specific signature transit time variations.  Still, transit times it is important to recognize can also be results of not causes of illness.

Researchers also learned that antibiotic usage in the first three years of a child's life are quite damaging.  They noted that this factor will heavily impact their gut ecology and immune systems later on.  They also noted that our obsession with germs deprives us from the microbial diversity that promotes long term health.

Low bacterial diversity was heavily implicated in inflammatory bowel disease and in Type 1 Diabetes.

Lastly they noted that genetics play some role in the microbiome but they expect much more to be revealed as research progresses.  Most of the researchers support supplementation with probiotics and prebiotics.

If you would like to learn more about your intestinal microbiology please contact us for an appointment.

This is our last May forum.  We have some exciting topics for June.  Next time a new study demonstrates that something very simple may totally impact anxiety. Visit us again on June 1st when we will post our upcoming events!

EXCITING NEWS we, my clinic and online store have been accredited A+ Rating by the BBB. Look for more about this soon! I consider it an honor and really big deal.

In this era of all things Paleo pertaining to diet and nutrition the fact that there are several real accounts of cancer victims healing themselves with a diet alone is not well known, even among alternative practioners.

George Oshawa first introduced the diet in the 1960's. The diet was all about balance according to asian philosophy. Balance of many factors as you will see.

The balance is attributed to  the Chinese properties of yin and yang. Balance in these areas are essential to health.  All foods are categorized as yin, yang, or neutral or balanced. In the 1960s, it was not uncommon to go on an all brown rice diet with the prescribed fermented soy sauce for a week or two in order to break through a spell of very bad health, or just as a cleansing fast.  Of course, some people took it too far and perished and consequently this diet received a lot of bad press.

But there is much more to macrobiotics than just brown rice, although it is a staple. The diet focuses mostly on grains and legumes with some vegetables and sea veggies (seaweeds), very little fruit, and no animal meat, although some macrobiotic dieters allow for a little fish. A diet heavy with grains cuts across the current thinking of some highly regarded alternative health practitioners and writers who believe grains create inflammation. However, the macrobiotic diet has a long history of health giving success with its focus on whole organic grains.

Some raw food is considered okay, but light cooking, usually steaming or stir frying, is the preferred method of preparing macrobiotic foods. Although there are a few dissidents within macrobiotic circles, the macrobiotic diet mostly shuns  ALL supplements, remember though this is back when the soil may have had some nourishment and foods were still unmodified.

After its introductory impact in the USA, public interest in macrobiotics waned. The notion of curing serious disease by diet alone was not appreciated, and as a method of getting healthier and staying healthy, it was considered too strict and severe by most.

One facet of macrobiotics that should be applied to all eating is chewing longer. It helps  food digest better and let's you become more aware of when you`ve had enough to eat.  ALSO, Something  HUGE that was completely lost on our culture is that this diet was changed  FREQUENTLY for the individual by their practitioner depending upon their current presentation IE, too yin, too yang, too hot too cold, or based on imbalances in their organs, weakness in the kidney or heart or blood or spleen or liver for example, seasonally and for other imbalances too numerous to list here.

Macrobiotics Today

Macrobiotics has remained over recent decades through the efforts of Michio and Gabriel Kushi`s books and their involvement with establishing training centers for macrobiotic principles, food selection, and cooking. Many of those who have adopted the macrobiotic diet as a life style did so after being stricken with life threatening diseases such as cancer or debilitating chronic issues such as Type 2 diabetes, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia.

They were magically led to macrobiotics, tried the diet strictly, and recovered quickly and painlessly.

I think the really valuable takeaway here is the concept of individualization and balance.  Health is a continuum and what works for a time needs to be CHANGED at regular intervals.  Very few people can do this for themselves.  It really requires someone very knowledgeable who can teach you how to ultimately read your own body and make those changes yourself.

You`ll find those testimonials and resources for more detailed information on macrobiotics in the Sources section below.

Goodbye gluten, hello Mycotoxin. This mold byproduct has been lurking in everything from dog foods to coffee  and is poised to become the next health buzzword. I have known this for several years and have avoided grains for about a decade for this very reason.

Following a lawsuit alleging that thousands of dogs may have been poisoned by mycotoxins, a toxic mold byproduct found in grains, a new study places them in an even more threatening location: breakfast cereals

Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry by Hyun Jung Lee and Dojin Ryu of the University of Idaho's School of Food Science, the paper, “Significance of Ochratoxin A in Breakfast Cereals from the United States,” is the latest in a long series of studies.

Throughout a period of two years, Lee and Ryu tested 489 samples of grain-based cereals from seven different markets across the country, looking for the presence of Ochratoxin A (OCA), the most common of mycotoxins, and one that is “considered to be a potent renal carcinogen.” OCA has also demonstrated neurotoxic and immunosuppressant effects, and is suspected as a trigger for autism, especially in males.

Of the 489 samples, 205, or 42 percent, showed OCA contamination, though almost all of them were well below the European Commission Regulations of 3 nanograms per gram, or roughly 3 parts per billion. The paper gives a nod to the EC Regulation limits because our own U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not impose any limits on mycotoxin content in food products.

Only 16 samples, all oat-based, were above the ECR threshold. Their study found that oat-based cereals contained the highest OCA contamination, at 70 percent. It was followed by wheat-based, at 32 percent, and then corn and rice-based, both at 15 percent.

OCA is produced mainly by two different fungi, Aspergillus Ochraceus and Penicillium Verrucosum, and is one of the most widespread mycotoxin contaminants–aside from grains, it can also be found in coffee, grapes, wine, pork, and water damaged homes.I have worked with patients damaged by mycotoxins in their homes and they are absolutely devastating to health. OCA's host molds need only a combination of high moisture and temperature to occur, and grains can become contaminated in both the field and in storage.

It is incredibly hardy.

Like most mycotoxins, it remains stable at normal food processing temperatures of 176 – 248 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning that OCA doesn't simply cook off . Comparisons between this study and others like it also show little difference between conventional and organic samples; both appear to be equally as susceptible to contamination.

What are the ramifications of this?

“[The] quick answer to that question is we don't know yet,” admitted Ryu via email. “We tested all products/commodities that may be contaminated with the toxin including infant cereal, dried fruits, beer, wine, coffee, etc. It would take another year to assess the data and to say if there is any health risk for the public.”

It should be noted that mycotoxins and OCA aren't a new thing—a quick Google search will reveal  a body of research studies on the substances, and their suspected effects, going back decades. And while conflicting info abounds  the fact that they present, on some level, a human threat at least in high concentrations does appear real. This is why Ryu and Lee hope that the results of their research spur an intensification of surveillance, especially on oats and oat-based products, which are consumed daily on a large scale.

One review is that thus far  2015 has spawned several mycotoxin red flags, linking them to everything from sick pets to declining dairy milk yields to reduced efficiency in poultry egg quality. Food Safety Magazine declared them “a food safety crisis,” and the “cause of 30-60 percent of food and feed rejections at European Union borders.”

I think it is important for consumers to DEMAND this budding research be potentiated and to DEMAND a health food supply once and for all from our government.

What do Obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression chronic allergies, hostilility,  defiance, perfectionism and other personality traits and disorders all have in common? They are disorders that could all be caused by a process of undermethylation – which is a result of elevated histamine levels.

Slightly elevated histamine levels may result in strong motivation, attention to detail, or wonderful detail and organizational abilities, but these postive traits become disordered with increased histamine levels and can present as obsessive compulsive behavior, perfectionism, over-competitiveness or other behavioral problems.

An adult who is an undermethylator, might in fact achieve levels of success, but may also be an over-achiever who struggles with addictions or other compulsive behaviours. Children may be self-motivated and goal-oriented, but may have problems with authority, social skills, or develop an obsession for certain activities.

The biochemistry of undermethylation:

“Methylation” is a process where chemicals called “methyl groups” are added to various elements of DNA, proteins and other molecules to help keep them in good working condition. Histamine is one of the chemicals which requires methylation to be metabolised correctly.

If histamine is “undermethylated”, it can stagnate and build up in the system. When blood contains high levels of histamine the excess histamine is stored in the blood basophils (a type of white blood cell involved with inflammatory reactions in your body) and brain neurons.

This in turn can result in low levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine – the chemicals responsible for making us feel good. Despite a high energy drive, those suffering from excess histamine can often also show symptoms of depression due to low serotonin levels.

Treatment options for Undermethylation

Undermethylation has a tendency towards disrupting other nutrients such as: low levels of calcium, magnesium, methionine and B6, and an excess of folic acid, so dietary changes and correct supplementation are the key to correcting undermethylation.

Of course, before rushing out to stock up on vitamins and minerals, it is important to correctly diagnose undermethylation which can be done with a diagnostic blood test available to identify histamine levels – one marker for the methylation process. The correct dosage and combination of nutrients can then be assessed based on your specific needs and what else is going on in your body, and progress can be monitored not only through symptoms, but also blood testing.

Contact us if you would like more information regarding testing and treatment of high histamine levels.
