collagen-structure

You've heard it from health experts, beauty gurus, and possibly even your social media friends. Collagen is the latest buzzword on every one's lips, and it can now be found in just about everything — from creams and cosmetics, to powders and pills. And the truth is, this may be one instance where the hype is actually factual.

As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen protein is available in your muscles, skin, blood, bones, cartilage, and ligaments. You may want to consider squeezing in an extra serving of this vital protein for several reasons, as collagen is a building block that:

·         promotes skin elasticity

·         holds together your bones and muscles

·         protects your organs

·         provides structure to joints and tendons

The good news is that your body produces collagen on a regular basis. But, it does slow down with age. Other lifestyle habits that can bring collagen production to a screeching halt include smoking, sun exposure, and an unhealthy diet. Some health conditions may also deplete your collagen storage. And without this important building block, you may start to see wrinkles and sagging skin, or even experience arthritis.

Read on,  to discover five specific benefits you may experience if you take the time to up your collagen consumption.

Top five benefits of collagen

1. May ease joint pain

In one study,  participants took a type II collagen supplement made from chicken necks for 90 days. Results showed that osteoarthritis symptoms decreased by 40 percent while the severity of symptoms dropped by an impressive 33 percent.

Another, with the same collagen supplement, participants with severe RA, saw a reduced number of swollen and tender joints —  some experienced complete remission. Importantly, the supplement was undenatured, meaning that the amino acids weren't broken down as a result of processing and exposure to high heat.

2. May reverse skin aging

One benefit of collagen is its ability to promote glowing, vibrant skin. This essential protein provides elasticity to the skin, helping it to appear more youthful and healthy. But as you get older and collagen production declines, fine lines, loose skin, and dryness can occur. So what happens if you increase your collagen intake with supplements?

One study randomly chose 46 of 69 women, ages 35-55 years old, to take a collagen hydrolysate supplement. The rest of the group took a placebo. The women who took the collagen showed an improvement in skin elasticity within four weeks.

The same manufacturer also conducted another study with the same supplement, which significantly reduced wrinkles after just eight weeks.

3. Helps build muscle and burn fat

Collagen is a major component of muscle tissue, so it should come as no surprise that it can have a big impact when it comes to building muscle mass. Plus, collagen also contains a concentrated amount of glycine an amino acid involved in creatine synthesis This provides muscles with the fuel needed to power through your workout. So what happens when you add collagen to your workout routine?

There's not much research on collagen and exercise, but a study looked at collagen supplements in 53 older males with , a condition where you lose muscle mass due to aging. After 12 weeks, those who took supplements along with resistance training saw an increase in fat loss and muscle strength more than the placebo group.

4. May reduce cellulite

Besides keeping your skin healthy and glowing, collagen may also help improve the appearance of stubborn cellulite. Cellulite occurs when the layer of fat under the skin pushes up against the connective tissue, creating a dimpled or lumpy appearance on the skin.

One study manufacturers was to discover what type I collagen would do for cellulite. They randomly assigned 105 women, ages 24-50, to take collagen peptides for six months. Those who did demonstrated a clear improvement in skin texture and waviness.

While it seems promising, more studies are needed to confirm.

5. May improve digestive health

Collagen is in the gut's connective tissue and can help support and strengthen the protective lining of your digestive tract. This is critically important because alterations in the barrier function of your intestine, also known as a permeable gut. Which can allow food particles into the systemic circulation which can result in, inflammation.

In fact, another study found that GI patients were more likely to have lower levels of serum collagen. So the current theory is that by increasing your intake of collagen, you could help build up the tissues that line your gastrointestinal tract and benefit your gut. However, current research is limited on the direct effects of collagen supplementation on the digestive system.

How to add collagen:

Here are a few easy ways to kick up your collagen intake:

Collagen Type I & III Powder 7 oz by Collagen M.D.1.   Experiment with bone broth

Which is made by simmering bones to help extract the flavor and beneficial nutrients. Not only is it an excellent source of collagen, but it's also tasty and easy to add to your diet by using it to make soups and stews, whole grains like rice and quinoa, and even to moisten leftovers.

2. Try out powdered gelatin

Gelatin is essentially a cooked form of collagen, and powdered gelatin can be a quick and convenient way to bump up your collagen consumption. It can be mixed into any liquid, including soups, stews, and broths.

3. Supplement with collagen peptides

Collagen peptides are another easy option to get your fix of this important amino acid. Most brands sell hydrolyzed collagen peptides, which means that the amino acids in collagen have been broken down so that they're more easily digested and absorbed.

Collagen powder can also be added to smoothies, hot beverages, or baked goods to pump some extra protein into your day. Here's the one I use. coffee-156158__340

Worldwide,  coffee is among the most popular of beverages, enjoyed by millions. It is estimated that 3.4 billion pounds are consumed each year within the USA alone. Coffee is one of the best studied beverage to offer  some health effects. But how much is too much, does it carry risk of contributing to things such as cancer, and what is behind this new proposed warning label for coffee?

For the most part coffee research suggests it's okay at least for most people. A recent study has suggested that coffee drinkers may even live longer regardless if it was caffeinated or not, with the authors concluding that health benefits of coffee go beyond caffeine. During 2016,  W.H.O removed coffee off  its possible carcinogen listing. There has been several articles describing Proposition 65 which was passed in California during 1986 requiring notification to consumers of possible links to cancers; businesses must provide a warning label when exposing any consumer to any item on a list of potentially harmful chemicals, of which acrylamide is listed which is found within coffee produced during the roasting process. There are both sides to coffee with some being for and some against. There has not been a study to convincingly link acrylamide found in coffee to risk of cancer, many studies have explored the potential of links between cancer and coffee with the most damning suggesting hot beverages may increase risk of esophageal cancer. Amounts of acrylamide in coffee varies and is small compared to foods that cause cancer in animals, in addition there are other sources of acrylamide such as bread, breakfast cereals, and cigarettes that don't get any attention.

In L.A, a  judge ruling new labeling requirements for coffee states that coffee companies did not prove that acrylamide was safe, meaning the judge asked coffee makers to prove a negative absence of risk, as well as discounting research on links to coffee consumption and benefits. Proving a negative is not an easy task and part of the reason many theories persist.  While the plaintiff offered evidence of harm, it is suggested that since the coffee companies could not show it was safe and acrylamide is listed on the long list of potentially harmful chemicals the judge ruled in favor of the warning label with the defendants failing to satisfy their burden of proof.  Additional legal action is expected, and it may be some time before California's plans with regard to warning labels are settled. There are things which can be done to limit acrylamide exposure such as eating less fried food, avoiding burnt or charred foods, not smoking, and avoiding instant coffee. Maybe coffee makers will come up with a new process to roast coffee, if so new studies will need to be conducted as it is not known if changing how coffee is roasted will change its effect on health, and as is  the case of potentially carcinogenic toxins additional research will be needed to determine if the amount of acrylamide  matters a little, a lot, or not at all.  Next week join me to discuss the TRUE benefits of collagen...you do not want to miss this!  SignUP here!  PS: Visit our store...it is currently in the process of being revamped and redesigned for an easy and seamless shopping experience. hair blank

Having  too many bad hair days lately?  Well, here are some little known reasons your hair is not up to speed.  Read on for some tips and helpers!

HORMONES:

A few hormones affect hair health,  but possibly the most important is cortisol.  Cortisol is also known as the “stress” hormone.  High quantities are responsible for thinning hair, hair loss, and lack of growth.   Reducing stress is paramount to correcting this situation.

Thyroid conditions,  perimenopause, and postpartum hormonal shifts will all affect hair health adversely.  All of these conditions respond extremely well to naturopathy and individualized treatment.  One medical condition is called androgenic alopecia which is male or female pattern baldness.  Nutriceuticals are very, very helpful in restoring hair loss if the correct one is chosen and taken faithfully for several months.

INFLAMMATION

Inflammatory conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and ringworm, and atopic dermatitis are also responsible for myriad hair problems and can be dealt with effectively by getting to the root, no pun intended , of the problems.

DIET/LIFESTYLE

Sleep deprivation, stress, improper eating, lack of exercise, recreational drinking and smoking will all show up in lackluster hair.  A diet high in healthy fats, lean protein, and a good and varied amount of organic fruits and vegetables will give you the basic building blocks of healthy hair building.  Iron deficiency in women is one of the most prevalent reasons for hair loss.  Foods such as: beef, liver, lentils and black beans are great sources. Spinach does not help as the phytic acid causes iron to be bound so it is not available to the human body.

It is no secret that the US government has been doing very little to protect it's citizens. This is in far contrast to other countries which seem to have the best interest of it's society as heart.  The FDA has also fallen down on the job, due to political pressure or other unfathomable reasons.  Following are 7 foods that are banned in most countries but still in the United States food supply.

1. FARM-RAISED SALMON
While farm-raised salmon is big business here in the US, it is illegal in Australia and New Zealand. Because the fish are basically mass produced, they are fed synthetic astaxanthin made from petrochemicals.
While it may be safe for fish to eat, the stuff has not been approved for human consumption.
2. PROCESSED FOODS CONTAINING ARTIFICIAL FOOD COLORS AND DYES
Norway, Austria, and other countries in the European Union have banned the sale of foods containing harmful dyes like red 40, yellow 5, yellow 6 and/or blue 2 which happen to be the most commonly used food dyes in the US. They have been linked to toxicity and hazardous health effects.
Kraft was put on blast for using yellow 5 in their famous macaroni and cheese recipe here in the U.S. It was never present in boxes sold in Europe.
3. OLESTRA/OLEAN
Created by Procter & Gamble as a substitute for cooking oil, Olestra prevents the body from absorbing vitamins. It is banned in the UK and in Canada for its harmful side effects, including stomach cramps and leaky bowels.
4. PRESERVATIVES BHA AND BHT
BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are preservatives that are often found in long-shelf life products like breakfast cereals and chewing gums.
The UK has banned the use of BHA in baby food and both BHA and BHT are banned in Japan and parts of the European Union.
5. BVO
Artificial flavor and color isn't the only thing that shows up in soda in the US. Mountain Dew and other citrus-flavored soft drinks contain BVO, or brominated vegetable oil. The chemical was actually created to be a flame retardant and consumed in large quantities, can cause damage to your nervous system.
It is banned as a food additive in Europe and Japan.
6. ARSENIC-LACED CHICKEN
Arsenic-based drugs can be used in some animal feed in the US because they can help animals grow quicker. They also can create pinker flesh in animals. It appears in commercial grade chicken feed since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated these products are safe.
In the European Union, arsenic-based feeds are banned as are the sale of chickens who have been fed from them.
7. POTASSIUM BROMATE
In the US, potassium bromate or brominated flour is a flour-bulking agent used in making rolls, wraps, flatbread, bread crumbs, and bagel chips. It helps to strengthen dough and reduce baking time.

Unfortunately there are many, many more...your best health practice, as always is to avoid processed foods and purchase organic foods from reputable farms and companies with minimal ingredients. There really is no other way to avoid most of these chemicals.  This is our last topic for July.  Join us on August 1st when I will publish our new schedule for the month.  Please SIGN UP, so you don't miss a thing!  Also: Please visit our store where we offer hundreds of handpicked products with great discounts and FREE shipping!  Best of Health!

Recently, an 82-year-old woman who suffered from dementia, and didn't recognize her own son has miraculously gotten her memory back after changing her diet. This is her story as reported by the Daily Mirror UK.

When his mother's condition became so severe that for her own safety she had to be kept in a hospital, Mark Hatzer almost came to terms with losing another parent.

Sylvia had lost her memory and become agitated  at one point, she had even phoned the police  accusing the nurse who were caring for her of kidnap.

A change in diet, which was comprised of high amounts of blueberries and walnuts, has had such a strong impact on Sylvia's condition that her recipes are now being shared by the Alzheimer's Society.

Sylvia also began incorporating other healthy foods, including broccoli, kale, spinach, sunflower seeds, green tea, oats, sweet potatoes and even dark chocolate with a high percentage of cacao. All of these foods are known to be beneficial for brain health.

Mark and Sylvia devised this diet together after deciding that the medication was not enough, they looked into the research showing that rates of dementia are much lower in mediterranean countries and copied their eating habits.

“In certain countries Alzheimer's is virtually unheard of because of their diet.

“Everyone knows about fish but there is also blueberries, strawberries, Brazil nuts and walnuts – these are apparently shaped like a brain to give us a sign that they are good for the brain.”

There were also some cognitive exercises that Mark and his mother would do together like jigsaw puzzles crosswords and meeting people in social situations, Sylvia would also exercise by using a pedaling device outfitted for her chair.

Mark said, “It wasn't an overnight miracle, but after a couple of months she began remembering things like birthdays and was becoming her old self again, more alert, more engaged.  Just goes to prove that natural medicine and diet can reverse many conditions that western medicine cannot alleviate. If you would like to set up a consultation please call us at 847 577 4455.

Please join me next week when I will discuss 7 foods eaten in the United States that are banned in other countries. Sign Up! here so you do not miss it!  ALSO: Please Visit our store where we provide FREE shipping and excellent prices and discounts on hundreds of natural products!!

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease occurs when due to constant exposure to an insult, the lungs become damaged and greatly expanded making it impossible for victims to breathe properly. Symptoms of COPD, also, include inflammation, difficulty breathing, and a variety of others. One's diet significantly impacts this condition, whether it be in a negative or positive way. There are, however, foods that should definitely be avoided.

1. Nitrated Meats

Nitrated meats, such as cold cuts, ham, bacon and hot dogs, will worsen COPD. Aside from that, they are not healthy for anyone. They are also laden with salt see next…

2. Salt and Salty Foods

Salt has the tendency to retain water inside the body, which can make it harder to breathe. Salts that are high in potassium may negatively react with other medications.

3. Milk and Dairy

Milk and dairy products are known to contain a compound called casomorphin, a byproduct of milk. This chemical will cause mucus build-up inside the intestines and lungs. This is true of wheat for many people as well.

4. Cruciferous Vegetables

A cruciferous vegetable is basically any vegetable that's high in fiber, such as broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy and radishes. The problem with fiber is that it's known to produce gas and bloating. Both of these will make it harder for a person to breathe.

5. Shrimp

Unfortunately, harvesters add sulfites to shrimp in order to keep them from changing color. Sulfites will cause bronchial passages to swell up and close. Potatoes, wine and even beer contain sulfites, so it's ideal to stay away from them too.

6. Fried Foods

Fried foods, whether it's chicken or onion rings, will cause bloating inside the stomach. This pressure puts force upon the person's diaphragm, inhibiting the ability to breathe. Avoiding these foods would be wise.

7. Carbonated Beverages

Carbonated beverages have carbon dioxide gas dissolved inside of them. This gas escapes the liquid while it's in the stomach. Naturally, this will cause unwanted bloating, which is bad news for a person who has COPD.

8. Citrus Fruits

Although citrus fruits are high in vitamin C, they have a high acidity content. This is likely to cause acid reflux, also known as heartburn. Those who have COPD are more likely to have heartburn, so eating citrus fruit isn't the best idea.

9. Chocolate

Just like citrus fruits, chocolate can cause acid reflux as well. It's fine to eat chocolate in moderation. However, it should not become a daily thing.

10. Pizza

Because pizza has tomatoes in it, it's likely to cause heartburn. This is due to the fact that tomatoes are acidic. Those who have COPD can have pizza without tomato sauce.

Avoiding these foods will go a long way. To be realistic, avoiding these foods entirely may not be possible. Keep in mind that well-being is far more important than short-term pleasure. Whole, fresh foods will reduce the symptoms of COPD. There are also many supplements that help reduce the symptoms of COPD as well.

                                                   SUPPLEMENTS

Vitamin D

The mechanism by which vitamin D affects the pathogenesis of COPD is unclear. However, studies show that vitamin D can modulate the activity of various immune cells (Herr 2011), inhibit inflammatory responses (Hopkinson 2008), and regulate airway smooth muscles (Banerjee 2012).

A review of molecular and animal experiments showed that vitamin D regulates airway contraction, inflammation, and remodeling in airway smooth muscles characteristic of COPD (Banerjee 2012). A cross-sectional study found that higher plasma levels of vitamin D are associated with increased bone mineral density and exercise capacity in people with COPD (Romme 2012). Evidence also showed that high dose vitamin D supplementation improved respiratory muscle strength and exercise capacity in people with COPD (Hornikx 2011).

A study among 414 smokers with COPD showed that vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in this population, and correlates with disease severity. The study also found that genetic determinants for low vitamin D levels were associated with an increased risk of COPD (Janssens 2010).

Other COPD intervention studies are underway to examine the effect(s) of 3,000 – 6,000 IU of vitamin D3 on rehabilitation (NCT01416701), as well as time to first upper respiratory infection and first moderate-to-severe exacerbation (NCT00977873) (clinicaltrials.gov 2012).

Antioxidants: Vitamins A, C, and E

Vitamin A plays a role in proper lung development (in the embryonic stage) and repair of damaged lung tissue. Animal models showed that mice with low vitamin A levels were more likely to develop emphysema after 3 months of exposure to cigarette smoke compared to mice with normal vitamin A levels (Van Eijl 2011). In one study, high dietary vitamin A intake (greater than 2,770 IU daily) was associated with a 52% reduction in risk of COPD (Hirayama 2009).

Vitamin E levels are low in smokers, increasing their susceptibility to free radical damage (Bruno 2005). A 10-year, randomized, population-based trial of 38,597 healthy women reported that supplementing with 600 IU of vitamin E reduced the risk of chronic lung disease by 10% (Agler 2011).

A review of population studies reported that low levels of vitamins E and C were associated with more wheezing, phlegm, and dyspnea. Levels of vitamins E and A were significantly lower during acute exacerbations of COPD compared to stable COPD (Tsiligianni 2010). A case-control study showed that people with COPD had significantly lower serum levels of vitamins A, C, E, and carotenoids compared to healthy controls. The COPD group also had higher white blood cell DNA damage and consumed fewer vegetables and fruits than the healthy group (Lin 2010).

N-acetylcysteine (NAC)

N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a glutathione precursor, can dissolve mucus (mucolytic properties) and repair damage caused by reactive oxygen species (Sadowska 2007; Sadowska 2012).

A comprehensive review of studies reported that oral NAC lowered the risk of exacerbations and improved symptoms in patients with chronic bronchitis compared to placebo (Stey 2000). NAC (600 mg) given twice daily for two months reduced the oxidant burden in the airways of people with stable COPD (De Benedetto 2005). Experimental and clinical studies also showed that NAC can reduce symptoms, exacerbations, and slow declining lung function in COPD (Dekhuijzen 2006).

Treating moderate-to-severe COPD with 1,200 mg of oral NAC daily for 6 weeks improved performance on lung function tests after exercise. NAC treatment also reduced air trapping in the lungs compared to placebo (Stav 2009). Clinical evidence indicates that administering 1,200 to 1,800 mg of NAC daily counteracts oxidative stress among subjects with COPD (Foschino 2005; De Benedetto 2005). In contrast, a large multi-center COPD trial reported no difference between NAC and placebo in the decline of lung function. However, those taking NAC who were not on corticosteroids appeared to have fewer exacerbations (Decramer 2005).

A clinical trial is underway to investigate the effect of adding 1,200 mg of NAC daily to standard treatment to reduce air trapping and exacerbations in stable COPD (NCT01136239).

Ginseng

Ginseng has traditionally been used in Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of respiratory symptoms (An 2011). A review of twelve small randomized studies showed that ginseng may be a potential adjunct therapy in patients with COPD. Oral ginseng formula combined with pharmacotherapy improved respiratory symptoms and quality of life, and reduced exacerbation of COPD compared to placebo, non-ginseng formula, or pharmacotherapy alone (An 2011). These results confirmed a previous study on the effects of 200 mg of ginseng extract daily on pulmonary function tests (Gross 2002). Pulmonary function and exercise capacity were significantly improved among people with moderate-to-severe COPD taking ginseng extract compared to placebo. A 2011 article reported that there is a large, multi-center, randomized, controlled study underway to evaluate the safety and efficacy of 200 mg of standardized root extract of Panax ginseng daily for 24 weeks among people with moderate COPD (Xue 2011).

Sulforaphane

Emerging evidence shows that sulforaphane, a compound in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, can potentially augment the anti-inflammatory effects of corticosteroids in COPD (Malhotra 2011). A study showed that histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2), an enzyme that enables corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, was low in the lung tissue of people with COPD (Cosio 2004; Barnes 2006). Evidence revealed that sulforaphane can restore corticosteroid sensitivity and increase the activity of HDAC2 (Malhotra 2011). Sulforaphane can also counteract oxidative stress by activating Nrf2, a chemical pathway involved in protecting cells from oxidative stress caused by cigarette smoke and other irritants (Harvey 2011; Malhotra 2011; Starrett 2011).

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a powerful antioxidant (Quinzii 2010). Indirect evidence shows potential benefit of supplementation in people with COPD who have low CoQ10 levels (Tanrikulu 2011).

A case-control study showed that CoQ10 levels were lower and oxidative stress markers increased during exacerbation of COPD, indicating an imbalance in antioxidant defense during those periods. The authors suggest supplementation with CoQ10 may reduce COPD exacerbation (Tanrikulu 2011).

A study of the effects of CoQ10 on the exercise performance of athletes and non-athletes showed that plasma levels of CoQ10 increased after 2 weeks of supplementation. Participants who supplemented with COQ10 also experienced less fatigue and increased muscle performance compared to placebo (Cooke 2008). These results support a previous study wherein CoQ10 supplementation (90 mg daily for 8 weeks) improved exercise performance in people with COPD (Fujimoto 1993).

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) help protect against damaging inflammatory reactions, build healthy cell membranes, and repair tissues (Calder 2012; Calder 2002; Odusanwo 2012). Omega-6 fatty acids, such as linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA), mediate pro-inflammatory activities (Calder 2002).

A study of clinically stable COPD reported that high dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids decreased the risk of elevated blood inflammatory markers in COPD, while higher dietary intake of omega-6 fatty acids increased the risk of elevated inflammatory markers (de Batlle 2012).

EPA and DHA supplementation can reduce the destructive effects of chronic inflammation (Calder 2012). One study showed a significant improvement in shortness of breath and a decrease in inflammatory markers in serum and sputum in a COPD group receiving omega-3 supplementation compared with controls (Matsuyama 2005).

Boswellia serrata

Cell culture and animal studies report that boswellic acids, specifically acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA), from boswellia serrata can inhibit two enzymes involved in inflammation: 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and cathepsin G (catG) (Siddiqui 2011; Abdel-Tawab 2011). 5-LOX stimulates the manufacture of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes and promotes the migration of inflammatory cells to the inflamed body area. 5-LOX has been shown to cause bronchoconstriction and promote inflammation (Siddiqui 2011). Cathepsin is a protein-degrading enzyme that attracts T cells and other leukocytes (white blood cells) at the sites of injury (Abdel-Tawab 2011). Animal studies showed that synthetic cathepsin inhibitors reduced smoke-induced airway inflammation (Maryanoff 2010) as well as airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation (Williams 2009).

Studies in asthma suggest an anti-inflammatory role for Boswellia serrata in pulmonary disease. For instance, a randomized controlled trial showed that daily treatment with Boswellia serrata extract (BSE) increased the lung function of people with asthma compared to a control group (Gupta 1998).

Resveratrol

Resveratrol, a molecule found in red wine, grapes, and Japanese knotweed, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may protect against COPD and asthma (Wood 2010). A cell culture study found that resveratrol inhibited the release of all measured inflammatory mediators (cytokines) from immune cells extracted from the alveoli of smokers and non-smokers with COPD. In contrast, the corticosteroid dexamethasone did not inhibit the release of some cytokines in smokers with COPD (Knobloch 2011). Moreover, while resveratrol attenuated the release of inflammatory mediators in airway smooth muscle cells, it preserved signaling of a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which may be protective against emphysema. Meanwhile, although corticosteroids significantly reduced inflammatory mediators, they also suppressed VEGF signaling (Knobloch 2010). In another study, resveratrol inhibited inflammatory cytokine release from alveolar macrophages in smokers and non-smokers with COPD in a dose-dependent manner (Culpitt 2003).

Zinc

The concentration of zinc is lower-than-normal in people with COPD; the level is even lower in severe cases (Herzog 2011). A clinical trial showed that critically ill people with COPD spent significantly less time on mechanical ventilation after receiving an intravenous cocktail of selenium, manganese and zinc, compared to those who did not (El-Attar 2009). Another study demonstrated that treatment with 22 mg of zinc picolinate for 8 weeks significantly increased the levels of an important antioxidant, superoxide dismutase, in COPD patients (Kirkil 2008).

L-carnitine

Respiratory infections increase the frequency and severity of exacerbations. L-carnitine modulates immune function, supports fatty acid and glucose metabolism, and may prevent wasting syndrome (Manoli 2004; Ferrari 2004; Alt Med Rev 2005; Silverio 2011). In one clinical trial, 2 grams of L-carnitine daily improved exercise tolerance and the strength of respiratory muscles in people with COPD. Blood lactate level, which is associated with muscle fatigue, was also reduced with L-carnitine supplementation (Borghi-Silva 2006; Cooke 1983).

Essential Amino Acids and Whey Protein

COPD is associated with muscle wasting and weight loss (i.e., sarcopenia, cachexia), especially in elderly people; and a higher degree of wasting predicts mortality in this population (Franssen 2008; Slinde 2005). Supplementation with essential amino acids, which are central to anabolic processes that help sustain muscle mass with advancing age, may help combat wasting in aging people with COPD (Dal Negro 2010). In a 12-week study involving 32 COPD patients aged 75 (mean) with impaired lung function, supplementation with 8 grams of essential amino acids daily lead to gains of body weight and fat free mass, as well as improved physical function and several biomarkers compared to placebo (Dal Negro 2010). Whey protein is a good source of essential amino acids and evidence indicates that whey protein may support muscle protein synthesis even more so than its constituent essential amino acids among an aging population (Katsanos 2008).

Melatonin

Poor sleep quality is prevalent among individuals with COPD, and oxidative stress is a significant contributor to lung deterioration and disease progression (Gumral 2009; Nunes 2008). Since the hormone melatonin is both a powerful antioxidant and a regulator of the sleep-wake cycle, it has received interest within the COPD research community for its potential to target these two important aspects of the disease (Pandi-Perumal 2012; Srinivasan 2009). Observational data indicate that melatonin levels decline and oxidative stress increases during COPD exacerbations (Gumral 2009). Clinical trials have shown that administering 3 mg of melatonin to COPD patients improves sleep quality and attenuates oxidative stress (de Matos Cavalcante 2012; Shilo 2000; Nunes 2008).  If you would like to discuss a program for COPD please contact us for an appointment at 847 577 4455 between 2 and 6 PM central time.  All of these supplements are available in our store…FREE shipping.  This is our last topic for the month. Typically, I am working more with people's stool than urine. However, urine is an extremely important indicator of many health problems. Here are some things to think about when you next have to urinate.

Color:

Transparent: The UC San Diego Health explains that colorless urine could indicate that your body may be over-hydrated. This is not a direct cause for concern, but they add that over-dehydration can dilute essential salts that can create a chemical imbalance in your blood.

Pale Color: You are well-hydrated, healthy and normal if you have a pale color urine, says the UC San Diego Health.

Yellow: As mentioned if the color of your urine is yellow, then everything is completely normal. You are hydrated and your abdomen is working perfectly, says the UC San Diego Health.

Dark Yellow: If the color of your urine is dark yellow, it's still normal, but it also does suggest that you may be mildly dehydrated.

Honey or Amber: UC San Diego Health says that if their color of your urine is honey or amber, you might be dehydrated.

Red: If the color of your urine is red, there may be a need to be concerned . Blood in the urine is called hematuria. In some cases, it can be benign, but in other cases, it can be a sign of infection, kidney stones or even a tumor in the urinary tract. It can also signal that there may be a problem with the prostate.

Blue: Certain medications and food dyes can produce blue urine, as well as the rare metabolic disorder familial hypercalcemia (blue diaper syndrome). According to UC San Diego Health, blue diaper syndrome is when there is an incomplete intestinal breakdown of tryptophan, which is a dietary nutrient. If your urine becomes blue, consult a physician.

Dark Brown or Black: Causes that do not require you to worry include certain medications, large amounts of fava beans, rhubarb, and aloe. But the UC San Diego Health explains that potential causes of dark brown or black urine that should worry you are copper or phenol poisoning or melanoma. The best thing to do is consult your doctor if the color of your urine is dark brown or black.

Urinary pH should be between 6.5 to 7.5 for optimal health, the lower the number the more acidic the urine, the higher the more alkaline.

Other Issues: Cloudy urine, can be a sign of excess phosphorus in the urine or even a sign of an infection.  Bubbly urine is a sign that your kidneys are not filtering protein properly.  Mucus in urine can be caused by UTI's, kidney stones and even ulcerative colitis. Viscous, thick urine can be a sign of dehydration or even malabsorption.

Paying attention to every bodily function is extremely important so you know when something is amiss. Next week I will discuss a new study that has the vaccine industry in a panic....do NOT miss it!  SignUP! kidneyhealth

In western culture, very little attention to the kidneys are placed.  In fact, most of our lifestyle practices are quite harmful to the health of these organs which filter an enormous amount of wastes from our blood daily.  Stress, anxiety, caffeine usage, poor diet, alcohol, exposure to environmental toxins etc. will all have a detrimental effect of this organ.  In contrast,  other cultures see the kidneys as the root of health and make efforts to live in harmony  with natural laws and to rejuvenate kidney health periodically.  It is no coincidence to see kidney trouble in very old pets as well…

Signs your kidneys need some TLC:

·         Frequent anxiety/panic

·         Tinnitus, vertigo and or hearing loss

·         Lower back or knee pain

·         Chronic dry throat

·         Night sweats

·         Insomnia

·         Heat in the palms, soles, and or chest

·         A lack of stamina

Obviously, to make a significant impact on the health of the organ we must first remove the insults: overwork, stress, chronic anxiety, poor diet, etc…

From there, foods and various tonics will work wonders to restore health.

Foods that are beneficial to the kidneys are those that provide ample nutrition without causing an undue amount of waste in the blood.  Cabbage, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables assist the liver in phase II detoxification, that means that less toxins make their way to the blood stream.  Blueberries in particular, although other berries are helpful, provide excellent nourishment directly to the kidneys in the form of antioxidants and also reduce the body's glycemic load which is extremely important.  Fish protein, especially wild caught salmon, tuna, herring, and even sardines are very helpful in providing protein without increasing the burden on the kidneys which other proteins do. Countries that consume a good amount of fish do not even experience kidney problems. Egg whites also are extremely helpful in this regard and are low in phosphorus. Olive oil is actually anti inflammatory and again where this is consumed daily the incidence of kidney problems is extremely low.  Garlic is also quite helpful as it detoxifies the body and is antibacterial as well!  Apples help to reduce the size of kidney stones and allow them to pass faster and more easily.  Ginger can also assist with this.

Supplements that help kidney help can involve Chinese tonics which strengthen the kidney essence and meridian itself.  Here are two I like, there are MANY though and the best practice is to do an assessment to see what is appropriate for your individual condition.  Lastly, I began recommending a new product both for people and pets and we have seen phenomenal results too.  It is based on foods and nutrients compatible with kidney rejuvenation.  I cannot tell you in this article what it is as it can only be dispensed to current face to face clients per the manufacturer.  Next week, we will explore the many benefits acupuncture can provide to your BRAIN!  Do Not MISS this. schizophrenia

image:getdoc

Two million Americans suffer from schizophrenia, a progressive mental illness that is characterized by disabling symptoms like delusions and hallucinations. Unfortunately, the antipsychotic medications that are often given to address these problems come with their own set of risks. Now, scientists have discovered that certain nutrients could help to fight the illness safely, potentially paving the way for more effective treatments without side effects.

Researchers from the University of Manchester looked at data taken from eight different clinical studies examining nutrient supplementation in hundreds of young people during the onset of psychotic illness. They found that supplements like the amino acid taurine and vitamin C could help alleviate the condition if taken early. They believe it works because it can address the oxidative stress that occurs when the body is unable to process oxygen normally.

Shellfish like clams, shrimp and scallops are excellent sources of taurine, with raw shrimp containing nearly 50 milligrams per ounce of taurine. However, it's important to keep in mind that it is destroyed in cooking. Other fish that offer taurine include tuna, sardines, and salmon. Taurine can also be found in foods like Brussels sprout, seaweed and beef. A clinical trial in Melbourne involving 121 people with psychosis revealed that 4 grams of taurine a day could reduce psychotic symptoms in just 12 weeks. Past studies have shown that it can protect organs from injury or oxidative stress, and it can be particularly beneficial to heart health.

Vitamin C, which has also been shown to reduce symptoms, can be found in a wide variety of foods. Some of the best sources include red pepper, kiwi, guava, oranges, strawberries, pineapple and papaya.

Alternative treatments showing increasing promise in fighting schizophrenia

Past studies, meanwhile, have shown that folate and vitamin B12 can both help alleviate the symptoms of schizophrenia in some patients. Folate, which can be found in folic acid supplements, plays a vital role in the DNA methylation that regulates gene expression; B12 increases its effects. This particular finding built on earlier studies linking a folate deficiency during pregnancy with a higher risk of schizophrenia among offspring and other research linking low blood folate levels with more severe negative symptoms in schizophrenic patients.

Another recent study found that holistic therapy that includes one-on-one talk therapy and intense family support yielded better results than the drug regimen typically prescribed for the illness.

These latest findings from the University of Manchester are not quite conclusive, but they do point to some areas that are worthy of further investigation. Next, the team would like to combine these beneficial nutrients into one supplement and see if it has any effect on young people who are suffering from psychosis. A study is expected to be underway this year investigating this approach.

My own take on this is to study specifically what a person may be lacking by doing a vitamin, mineral, amino acid panel. I am certain that the results would be even more profound.  I have seen it in my own clients.  Next week I hope you will join me for a discussion on the importance and care and feeding of your kidneys. Scientists are reporting that cholesterol drugs, which 15 million Americans are prescribed, are also completely worthless. A group of international researchers published a study in the BMJ Open journal that found no link between what's known as “bad” cholesterol and death as a result of heart disease in individuals over 60 years of age.

In fact, the results found that 92 percent of people with high cholesterol actually lived longer. The best way to achieve and maintain good heart health is not through medications but through healthy lifestyle habits.

“Lowering cholesterol with medications for primary cardiovascular prevention in those aged over 60 is a total waste of time and resources, whereas altering your lifestyle is the single most important way to achieve a good quality of life,” said vascular and endovascular surgery expert Professor Sherif Sultan from the University of Ireland.

‘Lowering cholesterol with medications is a total waste of time'

Study co-author Dr. Malcolm Kendrick said their findings show “that older people with high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels, the so-called ‘bad' cholesterol, lived longer and had less heart disease.”

These revelations are sure to have huge implications for the pharmaceutical industry, as the cholesterol drug Lipitor is the most profitable meditation of all time – raking in more than $140 billion in sales, according to Health Impact News.

The guidelines for preventing heart disease and the buildup of plaque in the arteries need to be re-evaluated, said the study authors, adding that “the benefits from statin treatment have been exaggerated.”

But the truth is that the benefits of statins haven't just been exaggerated, but 100 percent fabricated, as well as the “research” supporting other drugs such as antidepressants and vaccines.

Natural News reported in 2013 that the push to get even more U.S. adults on statins was facilitated by doctors tied to the industry. Physicians with the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology issued new guidelines three years ago calling for one-third of all adults to consider taking statins – a push proven to be extremely lucrative for Big Pharma.

When questioned about the conflict of interest, the response was: “Ties between heart doctors and Big Pharma are so extensive that it is almost impossible to find a large group of doctors who have no industry ties.”
