As we age, the reduced turnover of our cells means we can lose control over how our skin ages. Epidermal stem cells needed to create healthy new skin are significantly reduced and function less efficiently. A discovery based on promising plant stem cell research may allow you to regain control.

Scientists have found that a novel extract derived from the stem cells of a rare apple tree cultivated for its extraordinary longevity shows tremendous ability to rejuvenate aging skin. By stimulating aging skin stem cells, this plant extract has been shown to lessen the appearance of unsightly wrinkles. Clinical trials show that this unique formulation increases the longevity of skin cells, resulting in skin that has a more youthful and radiant appearance.

Stem Cells

Cells in our bodies are programmed for specific functions. A skin cell, a brain cell, and a liver cell all contain the same DNA, or set of genes. However, each cell's fate is determined by a set of epigenetic (able to change gene expression patterns) signals that come from inside it and from the surrounding cells as well. These signals are like command tags attached to the DNA that switch certain genes on or off.

This selective coding creates all of the different kinds of cells in our bodies, which are collectively known as differentiated (specialized) cells.

Although differentiated cells vary widely in purpose and appearance, they all have one thing in common: they all come with a built-in operational limit. After so many divisions, they lose their ability to divide and must be replaced. This is where stem cells come in.

Your body also produces other cells that contain no specific programming. These stem cells are “blank,” so your body can essentially “format” them any way it pleases. Two universal aspects shared by this type of cell are: (1) the ability to replenish itself through a process of self-renewal and (2) the capacity to produce a differentiated cell.

The Role of Stem Cells in the Skin

The slow self-renewal process of epidermal stem cells, however, creates a problem. Because each epidermal stem cell only lasts for a certain number of divisions, and because each division runs the risk of lethal DNA mutation, the epidermal stem cell population can become depleted. When this happens, lost or dying skin cells begin to outnumber their replacements and the skin's health and appearance start to decline.

So what can be done? Scientists turned to plants for the answer.

Planting a Seed of Hope

Plants also have stem cells. Like humans, plant stem cells depend on epigenetic control and signals from surrounding cells for their development. Unlike humans, however, each plant-derived adult stem cell possesses the ability to generate a whole new plant.4 Scientists have found a way to harness the power of plant stem cells by growing plant tissues in culture.

The technique is a relatively simple one. First, viable tissue is obtained from a source plant. This material is called an explant. Next, a small cut is made in the explant. New cells form on the surface of this cut in an attempt to heal the wound. This colorless mass of cells is called a callus. The slowly dividing cells of a callus are undifferentiated cells that lack the characteristics of normal plant cells. They are essentially unprogrammed and full of potential.

With this technology, it is theoretically possible to propagate any plant cell in a liquid culture, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities. This fact started scientists thinking—what would happen if an extract of genetically long-lived plant stem cell tissue was applied to human skin?

Comparing Apples to Apples

Today, apples are cultivated primarily to enhance their appearance and flavor. But before the rise of refrigeration, an apple's ability to stay fresh for a long time was its most sought-after characteristic.

For this reason, a special variety of apple was cultivated in the middle of the 18th century that could be stored for a greatly extended period of time. In essence, it was the genetically modified, longer-living stem cells of this tannin-rich variety of apple, called the Uttwiler Spätlauber apple, which were responsible for its unique storage longevity.

In a certain isolated area of rural Switzerland, a few of these hardy apple trees still survive today. Scientists obtained an explant from the leaf of one of these trees to produce a special anti-aging stem cell extract.

The Amazing Results

Finally,  the scientists conducted a human study to determine the anti-wrinkle effectiveness of a special cream containing a 2% Uttwiler Spätlauber extract along with lecithin liposomes. This patent-pending cream (called PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica) was applied twice daily to the crow's feet area of 20 participants. Wrinkle depth was reduced by an average of 8% after just two weeks, and by 15% after four weeks—thus reducing the signs of aging!5

What You Need to Know: Apple Stem Cells Offer Hope For Aging and Damaged Skin

*       Scientists are conducting intensive research on stem cells, which show tremendous potential to repair damaged tissues and organs.

*       Stem cells are capable of self-renewal and can transform themselves into differentiated cells.

*       Epidermal stem cells are crucial to replenish the skin cells that are lost due to continual shedding. When epidermal stem cells are depleted, the number of lost or dying skin cells outpaces the production of new cells, threatening the skin's health and appearance.

*       Like humans, plants also have stem cells. Scientists are keenly interested in a stem cell extract from the Uttwiler Spätlauber apple tree, whose fruit demonstrates an exceptionally long shelf-life.

*       This extract, termed PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica, has been shown to stimulate human stem cell proliferation, protect stem cells against ultraviolet light-induced death, and mitigate aging-related alterations in gene expression.

*       A human study showed that topical application of PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica reduced the depth of crow's feet wrinkles after only two weeks.

*       Chondrus crispus (red seaweed) extract, hyaluronic acid, and an antioxidant tea blend complement the effects of PhytoCellTec™ Malus Domestica to help promote radiant, youthful skin.

We have 1 dram samples of the liposomal extract available for $9.99.  If you would like to try it out!  Please contact Mike or me for details. ALSO visit my PRO beautiful skin boutique for EXCELLENT anti aging products at LOW prices and FREE shipping!

 How Balanced are YOU???

In order to function properly, the body has to be able to keep the levels of certain chemicals and compounds in the body at a near steady-state. This is known as homeostasis and it is a critical part of all living organisms. As a result, your body needs to keep certain fluids, such as the blood, slightly alkaline.

Acidity and Health

The chemical environment of the body affects the way that many different cells and proteins work. For example, the stomach needs to be acidic in order for digestive proteins to properly function. If a compartment in the body becomes too acidic or too alkaline, proteins can change their shape, the Food Science department at Ohio State University notes, which can cause them to be unable to function properly.

Blood and pH

The balance of acids and bases in fluids can be measured using the pH scale, which defines neutrality as 7. Acids have a low pH and basic or alkaline substances have a high pH. The pH of the blood is tightly regulated because it has access to every tissue in the body; as a result, the pH of the blood is kept between 7.35 and 7.45, which makes it slightly alkaline. Other fluids in the body, such as saliva and urine, also have normal pH ranges, but these are more variable because changes in their pH will not have as dramatic on the body as a whole.

Regulation

Because the alkalinity of the blood is so critical, the human body has three ways of regulating blood pH. Carbon dioxide, which is a byproduct of the way cells use glucose, is mildly acidic; its levels can be controlled by changes in your breathing rate. The kidneys also can excrete excess acid via the urine. Finally, the blood is filled with special chemical mixes known as buffers, which work by resisting any sudden changes in pH.

Acidosis

If the pH of the blood gets too low, acidosis is the result. Acidosis can be caused by problems with breathing, resulting in respiratory acidosis. Metabolic acidosis, on the other hand, is the result of ingestion of acid-producing compounds, problems with metabolism, or the loss of alkaline fluids from the body, the Merck Manual reports. Mild acidosis can cause fatigue, nausea and vomiting. More severe acidosis can cause a headache and drowsiness, which may progress to stupor, a coma and death.

Effects of Food

The acidity and alkalinity of different food products has recently come into focus by groups that claim that you can increase your overall health by consuming alkaline foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Because the body has its own regulatory system for maintaining blood pH, it is unlikely that changing your diet can have any significant long-term effect on the alkalinity of your blood, InteliHealth notes.  Diet does make a big difference in the alkalinity or acidity of your body's tissue, and overall HEALTH!

We will be offering a FREE seminar about alkalinity, the symptoms of acidity over alkalinity the health benefits of alkalinity and the best way to support this process from a food,  diet,  emotion and supplement perspective. Come join us on: Saturday, October 6th @ 9:30 AM for a free seminar about alkalinity and your health!  Participants will receive valuable coupons to our clinic! Here is a summary of some of the more salient points of the September Consumer Reports article I posted about yesterday:

Yonkers, NY – In a new report in its September issue and online at www.ConsumerReports.orghttp://www.consumerreports.org/cro/supplements912, Consumer Reports identifies ten hazards that might surprise the large swath of American adults—more than 50 percent—who take vitamins, herbs, or other nutritional supplements.

“Patients sometimes assume that supplements are safe because they are ‘all natural,' but not all supplements are truly natural. In fact, one of the greatest safety hazards to consumers involves supplements that have been spiked with prescription drugs or toxic metals,” said Jose Luis Mosquera, M.D., medical adviser, Consumer Reports, and an internist who specializes in integrative health and medicine.

http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/cols/www/delivery/ck.php?oaparams=2__bannerid=123__zoneid=10__cb=bcc7619738__oadest=http://www.myfmbank.com/
Consumer Reports identifies ten hazards distilled from interviews with experts, published research, and its own analysis of reports of serious adverse events submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Here are some of the hazards discussed in the report, plus advice for staying safe:

Supplements are not risk-free.  More than 6,300 reports describing an excess of 10,300   serious outcomes, including 115 deaths and more than 2,100 hospitalizations, 1,000 serious injuries or illnesses, 900 emergency-room visits, and some 4,000 other important medical events, streamed into the FDA from supplement companies, consumers, health-care providers, and others between 2007 and mid-April 2012.

CR notes that the reports by themselves don't prove that supplements caused the problems, but the raw numbers are cause for concern. Current laws make it difficult for the FDA to order a problem product off the market. In fact, to date, the FDA has banned only one ingredient, ephedrine alkaloids.

Protect yourself: Search the FDA's website at www.fda.gov for warnings, alerts, or voluntary recalls involving a supplement you are thinking of taking.  If you suspect you're having a bad reaction to a supplement, tell your doctor. You can also report your problem to the FDA at 800-332-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Some supplements are really prescription drugs.  According to Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D, director of the FDA's Division of Dietary Supplement Programs, dietary supplements spiked with prescription drugs are the “largest threat” to consumer safety.   Many recalled products have the same or similar active ingredients as prescription drugs such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and sibutramine (Meridia, a weight-loss drug that was removed from the market in 2010 because of evidence that it increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes).

Others contained synthetic steroids.  “As a result, adulterated products can cause some of the same side effects and interactions that a consumer may be trying to avoid by opting for supplements instead of prescription drugs,” says Dr. Mosquera.

Protect yourself. Consult your doctor if you are having trouble in the bedroom (it could indicate an underlying health problem).  And try to slim down with diet and exercise.  Build muscle by weight training.

You can overdose on vitamins and minerals.  Unless your health-care provider tells you that you need more than 100 percent of the recommended daily intake of a particular nutrient, you probably don't.  Megadoses of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can cause problems, and even some standard doses may interfere with certain prescription medicines.  “Surprisingly, some people may experience adverse effects from even normal doses of a vitamin or mineral supplement, especially patients with digestive issues or those who take blood thinners,” says Dr. Mosquera.

Protect yourself: Using information from the labels on the supplements and food you routinely consume, add up your daily exposure to everything, and then check CR's “How much is too much?” table to see if you're overdoing it.

You can't depend on warning labels.  For one thing, the FDA doesn't require them on supplements with one important exception, iron.  In a market basket study of 233 products purchased online and in the New York City metropolitan area, Consumer Reports found wide variations and inconsistencies in labeling.

Protect yourself:  Make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows what supplements and prescription drugs you are taking or thinking of taking.  You can also check for interactions by using Consumer Reports' “Guide: 100+ Commonly Used Supplements.” To access the free guide, go to www.ConsumerReports.org/healthhttp://www.consumerreports.org/health and click on “Natural Health.”

Heart and cancer protection: not proven.  Omega-3 pills and antioxidants are widely thought to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, respectively, and millions of women take calcium to protect their bones. But recent evidence casts doubt on whether those supplements are as safe or effective as assumed.  The report notes that the widely held view that fish-oil pills help prevent cardiovascular disease hit a snag when a study of 12,500 people with diabetes or prediabetes and a high risk of heart attack or stroke found no difference in the death rate from cardiovascular disease or other outcomes between those given a 1-gram fish-oil pill every day and those given a placebo.  These findings were published in a June 11th, 2012, issue of New England Journal of Medicine online report.

Consumer Reports also notes a recent blow against calcium supplements by German and Swiss researchers who followed almost 24,000 adults for an average of 11 years.  They found that regular users of calcium supplements had an 86 percent increased heart-attack risk compared with those who didn't use supplements, as reported in the June 2012 issue of the Journal Heart.

Protect yourself: Lay off the antioxidant supplements and reduce your cancer risk safely by quitting smoking, avoiding excessive alcohol, and eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and whole grains.

To put some of this information in perspective for our clients and readers, the risks cited in this article are quite small when one considers that according to the AMA 290 deaths occur each day due to prescription drugs

As no one seems to believe these numbers are real, I'll quote the source: The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Vol 284, No 4, July 26th 2000, authored by Dr Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH, of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

That study, which is twelve years old -- and drug deaths have risen considerably since then -- documents 106,000 deaths per year from the "adverse effects" of FDA-approved prescription medications.

That being said,  two take away lessons are true....nothing on this earth is completely risk free, and yes,  as with any product know exactly where it is coming from, who the manufacter is and what their safety record is.  As I published earlier this year here in my Dateline Story our distributor Emerson as well as our Manufacturers: Douglas Labs, RxVitamins, Emerita, Metagenics and all the others I represent and distribute have an IMMACULATE safety profile and their quality control measures are available for all to see...and speak for themselves!

As stated in my Dateline rebuttal,  reports of supplements adulterated with drugs and toxins are associated only with fly by night, unscrupulous operations that no one knows anything about.  While I recognize our products cost a bit more they are substances you are putting into your bodies and therefore should be taken seriously indeed!

I agree with the report that people can and do overdose on vitamins and herbs.  Many first time clients appear at my clinic in Arlington Heights with bags of things they are taking with no knowlege or wisdom whatsoever...one of the first things I do is make certain they haven't overdosed or created a conflict with their medications.  The interaction resource linked above is a good reference for laypersons.  I also agree that many supplements widely sold are unregulated drugs and some actually contain toxins and drugs.  I do not sell or dispense these items and never have or will!   I only prescribe and dispense natural supplements that have existed for aeons and have an excellent safety profile and been thoroughly researched.

I  also agree and do not like to see people self treating for symptoms that may be indicative of medical problems.  These symptoms should be investigated by the individual and their medical doctors.  It is also possible to overload on a vitamin such as D  or iron, even if you have been tested as deficient in since people respond to vitamin therapy in their own unique fashion and time.

Lastly, with respect to research and epidemiologic studies as non scientists many people can be misled by sensational headlines,  when in fact, with respect to epidemiology two things are in fact true.  One, NEVER can conclusions be drawn from these studies with regard to specific nutrients.  These studies sometimes illuminate areas in need of more study with controlled experiments, but really nothing more....

Lastly, calcification of arteries and heart attacks is again a complex physiologic and biochemical area...here is a review of the actual process:

Cardiovascular calcification, or the buildup of calcium plaques in the arteries of the heart, presents an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Bits of plaque can break off and be carried by the bloodstream to critical junctures in the body and brain causing serious illness and death.

A variety of factors can cause calcification, including lack of exercise, a high-fat,  high-sugar diet, obesity, diabetes,  and low intake of vitamin K. To reduce the risk of further calcification, physicians generally recommend treatment with cholesterol-reducing drugs, diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes.  To suggest that the cause is calcium supplementation is well,  simplistic at best...but certainly grabs attention!

ANY skin specialist....dermatologist, aesthetician, cosmetologist and YES I am a NATURAL skin specialist will tell you that acne is nearly epidemic among most age groups across the board.

The skin and gut connection has been recognized as undeniable in the medical community. In fact, most dermatologists will acknowledge that gut issues and skin problems frequently occur together.

And the research is there to confirm the gut-skin connection.

For example, one study investigated 13,000 adolescents. Those with acne were more likely to experience symptoms of gastrointestinal distress like constipation and heartburn. The study found that abdominal bloating, which is a sure sign of intestinal dysbiosis and inflammation, was 37% more likely to be associated with acne. (1)

Other studies have found a definite link between mental health and skin disorders. (2)(3) Some studies have even shown that stress can impair normal and healthy gut bacteria. (4)

In fact, as far back as 1930 physicians have had evidence to show that:

  • Beneficial bacteria can improve inflammatory skin conditions.
  • Beneficial bacteria can positively affect psychological symptoms, like depression.
  • The health of the gut, brain, and skin are all interrelated.

Most acne interventions...and I have developed two, based on natural antimicrobial botannicals to be available in my clinic and online store shortly deal only with the superficial aspects of acne....ie they kill bacteria on the skin's surface.

Tell me this, if your body is a veritable bacteria factory and your body is using it's detoxification pathways to try to clear it via the skin, the body's largest organ how does one combat acne????

Well you can continue dealing with bacteria at the surface only, OR Holistically speaking you can get to the cause. While I use acupuncture and herbs for severe skin symptoms short term,   the cause is BACTERIA and people with chronic acne have a condition known as intestinal dysbiosis whereupon they are overrun with usually at least three types of bacterias and sometimes fungus as well.  Unless the time is taken to culture and test for this the situation can never be corrected and arrested.  Chronic infection also leads invariably to leaky gut syndrome as discussed last week.

If you could get rid of acne for good AND drastically improve your health wouldn't you DO IT????

I see people every day who have wasted years looking dreadful having bad health and lowered self esteem while spending alot of time and money getting WORSE. Do NOT be one of those people!

I have helped hundreds of people with acne and many other skin conditions and it does take time and effort but usually far less than they think.  It involves getting tested properly, getting the right treatment of diet, probiotics and antimicrobials tailored to their test results and some topical assistance for the first month in severe cases.  After that the skin will take a turn for the better and continue to improve until they do not need treatment any longer...usually 4-12 months.

If you or someone you know are READY to kick acne's behind please call or refer them to us...I am doing free skin consults this month so please call us anytime.  I have an AMAZING array of personally formulated acne products as well as skin beautifiers in my Acne and Skin Boutique aisles of my store. I am more than happy to guide you regarding the selection of any product.

PS: our 12% Airegiline cream is now available in our online store.

Yours in Skin Health!

           How Emotions affect Health

Hello!  This week's forum is how emotions affect health or specifically how negative emotions affect one's health.

Health is the result of natural living. When people live in harmony with their physiological needs, health is the inevitable result. By supplying the organism with its basic requirements (natural, unadulterated food; sunshine; clean, fresh air; pure water; appropriate physical, mental and emotional activities; and a productive lifestyle) while simultaneously eliminating all harmful factors and influences, the self-constructing, self-regulating, self-repairing qualities of the body are given full rein.

This week's forum deals with harmonizing negative emotions. A newsclipping from the 1920's quoted Albert Edward Day, DD which reads" That loving our enemies is good for our spiritual health is widely known and accepted but, that negation and poisonous emotions destroy health is a relatively new discovery.  The problem of health is often an emotional one.  This is one of the first laws of hygiene... a form of natural medicine similar to naturopathy-.  No man for his health's sake can afford to indulge in negativity and hatred,  It is like taking repeated doses of poison.  When you are urged to give up negative emotions, you are not listening to a moon struck idealist.  Rather you are hearing counsel as important as diet."

We hear so much about balanced diet and exercise but without  balanced emotions one cannot digest and assimilate nutrients properly leading to health problems.

Negative emotions create disharmony and stress.  Balance in emotions can be acquired but it takes dedication and effort.

Simple ways to balance emotions can be as simple as spending time outdoors, reconnecting with yourself and nature, meditating, hobbies, or visualization exercises.

Acupuncture which addresses harmonizing the 7 emotions can be a great help by helping a person get in balance quickly while learning the exterior factors which push him or her out of balance and addressing them over a period of time.

Generally,  I have found that acupuncture is the fastest way to harmonize a client's emotional being, each treatment having a cumulative impact on the emotional health and balance of the person.

Please contact me anytime for a free assessment of your situation to see if you would benefit from an acupuncture session.  Also PLEASE peruse the emotional health aisle of our store.   We offer amazing PRO products with great prices and FREE shipping on each and every order.

We will have our new Forums and exciting September events posted in a couple of days!

What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Because it connects apparently unrelated disorders, Leaky Gut Syndrome is one of the most misunderstood concepts in medicine today.
To begin with, Leaky Gut is not a single disease or syndrome; it's a pathological condition that occurs as part of many different diseases and syndromes. The term refers to an abnormal increase in the permeability of the small intestine. Increased intestinal permeability is a component of many different disorders.
Leaky Gut Syndrome is associated with:
  • inflammatory and infectious bowel diseases
  • several types of arthritis
  • acne
  • psoriasis,
  • AIDS ,
  • chronic liver disease
  • pancreatic disease
  • Eczema

as well as numerous conditions triggered by food allergy, including  hives, and irritable bowel syndrome
Why is increased small intestinal permeability such a problem?
The small intestine is the largest organ in your body and two-thirds of your immune system lies within its walls. The small intestine continuously activates itself by sampling the molecules that pass through the intestinal lining.
Leaky Gut Syndrome is increased permeability of this lining, and it alters the molecules which prime your immune system for action by allowing molecules that don't ordinarily pass through the gut lining to get access to your immune system.
Sometimes, Leaky Gut Syndrome plays a primary role in the evolution of an illness.
Crohn's disease is a serious chronic intestinal disorder that effects almost a million people in the United States. People who develop Crohn's disease may have a genetically induced increase in intestinal permeability that creates the inflammation in the bowel. This predisposing leakiness can be found in close relatives of patients with Crohn's diseases, suggesting that it precedes the development of inflammation.
Leaky Gut Syndrome can occur as a result of another disease.
Celiac disease is an inherited intolerance to gluten, a group of proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. Celiac disease affects about one person in a hundred in North America and often goes undiagnosed, even when people have severe symptoms. The inflammation caused by active celiac disease causes the leaky gut, which in turn causes some of the complications associated with celiac disease.
Leaky Gut Syndrome can also be caused by the treatment for another disease.
In rheumatoid arthritis, for example, the drugs used to relieve pain and inflammation can damage the intestinal lining, leading to Leaky Gut Syndrome within two weeks. Leaky Gut Syndrome, in turn, is associated with aggravation of arthritis.
For most conditions, the precise role of Leaky Gut Syndrome remains unclear, but it seems to be part of a vicious cycle that makes the condition get worse over time. Allergic reactions to food, for example, cause a transient increase in intestinal permeability. If this happens frequently, it may increase the number or severity of food allergies.
In chronic fatigue syndrome and major depressive disorder, Leaky Gut Syndrome activates the intestinal immune system to produce chemicals called cytokines that spread inflammation through your body.
Inflammation is an important trigger for symptoms like fatigue, malaise, pain, and depression.
When should you suspect Leaky Gut Syndrome?
If you have:
  • pain in multiple joints,
  • a chronic skin condition,
  • chronic diarrhea or abdominal pain,
  • chronic fatigue,
  • chronic depression,
  • malaise,
  • a feeling of being infected but your doctor can't find the infection,
or if you use aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs on a regular basis, or if you're a heavy drinker of alcohol.
Recent research in animals has indicated that Leaky Gut Syndrome may also be associated with difficulty losing or gaining weight, but its association with obesity is still under investigation .
There are tests available specifically for LGS but if you have an inflammatory bowel condition, eczema, psoriasis or auto immune problem it is a given that leaky gut coexists.
It is extremely important to correct the underlying disorder first.  Please visit our GI Pages and Store aisle as well as our natural health library for more information about leaky gut

Please contact us anytime for help with this or any related disorder.
