You Don't MOVE!
You take the elevator when you need to go up a few floors, you get on the little motorized walk ramp at the airport, and you park as close to the front door as possible. You spend HOURS on the computer each day or watching TV or BOTH! At first glance, choosing these habits don't appear to make much of a difference in your daily life. The fact is, they do. A flight of stairs burns, on average, 15 calories. If you're taking stairs at work, the mall or in your home on an average day, that could add up to 225 or more extra calories burned. Walk a bit further to get to the front door when you're shopping and you could burn an extra 30 (bye bye little piece of candy that you snuck in during your work day). Forgoing the automatic walkway in the airport -- an extra 100! The typical person moves in my opinion only 20% what their body requires....I am NOT even talking about exercise here.  Factor that in and you're down to 5-10%.

You Love Your Diet Sodas
No calories mean no weight gain, right? This is the popular line of reasoning for many diet soda drinkers. Unfortunately, current research indicates  links between artificial sweetener consumption and weight gain. A study in the journal Diabetes Care found that daily consumption of diet soda was associated with a 36 percent greater relative risk of developing metabolic syndrome and a 67 percent greater relative risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared with non-consumption. Another study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that, in one group of study participants, consumption of artificially sweetened beverages was associated with Type 2 diabetes. The findings are mimicked in rat studies as well. A study in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience found that consumption of products containing artificial sweeteners led to weight gain due to changes in the rat's normal physiological processes of sweets. In addition to this, the presence of constant artificial sweeteners in the diet means you're never really letting your taste buds get a break from the sweet taste you love. The more you drink diet soda, the longer you'll remain trapped in the sugar cycle and continue to crave sweets.

You're  in LALA Land

Eating is awesome. The feel, smell and satisfaction of food are one of the main pleasures of life. You may miss these food advantages though if you're like most Americans and spend your meals and snacks in front of a TV, computer screen or newspaper. If this sounds like you, you're probably taking in way more calories than you think. A 2010 study in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that adding stimuli during mealtime increased not only the amount of food an individual consumed at that particular meal, but also increased calorie consumption later in the day as well. Further, a 2004 study in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine found an association between television viewing and obesity and metabolic syndrome. Take the time to enjoy your food.

Your Friends & Family Sabotage You

Have you ever had a friend  or family member who knows you're trying to lose weight and eat healthy, but still tempts you with "it won't kill you to have a few bites of (insert tempting high sugar, fat and calorie food here)." Support is crucial when it comes to successful weight loss and maintenance, and having a toxic person or people close to you can really throw you off. What you really need is a supportive buddy who you can lean on in good times and bad; someone who will keep you on track and compliment you when you lose weight. A 2005 study in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that individuals were most successful with weight loss when they "buddied" up with like-minded people with the same healthy goals as they had. Besides....If you have completely different lifestyles and values what exactly are you DOING with these people????

You "Diet" During The Week -- But Go  Wild On The Weekends

So many of my patients come to me with the same complaint: "How come I'm not losing weight? I barely eat anything!" At the most basic level, weight loss is a matter of numbers; consume fewer calories than you expend and you'll lose weight. However, in this case, too much of a good thing can actually sabotage your weight loss effort. The daily functions of keeping you alive require calories for fuel (and I'm talking about the basics -- breathing, beating heart, etc.) and when you don't provide your body enough energy, it slows down. It's very much like filling up your car with gas. With a full tank, you can go for miles at any chosen speed. When the gas tank is nearing empty, there is the need to drive slower to conserve gas consumption until the tank is filled again.

Metabolism works in much the same way. When we feed our body the proper fuel, we have endless energy. As the intake of calories drops to sustinance levels the human body moves into starvation mode. This starvation mode triggers a lower metabolism as the body becomes super efficient at using what little energy or fuel it receives. Fewer calories are burned and weight loss comes to a stop very inefficient metabolisms will actually conserve to the point of GAINING. A recent study in the American Journal of Physiology described an "energy gap" to explain the difference between appetite and expenditure requirements. Researchers found that energy requirements after weight loss decreased, meaning you needed fewer calories to maintain your current weight loss. As you ate less, the cycle continued and, over time, biology would take over and your ability to continue to lose weight diminished. If, on top of that, you choose to give yourself a "pass" on the weekends for all your hard work starving yourself during the week, expect more weight GAIN. Slow metabolism plus a Saturday/Sunday food and drink fest ... you do the math.

You're Getting Fewer Than 5 Hours A Night

Losing weight like any worthwhile pursuit takes ENERGY. Sleep is great for your  body, brain, your skin, and, as it turns out, your weight as well. An abundant amount of research indicates that a lack of sleep alters the digestive , not to mention stress hormones that are responsible for hunger and fullness. A lack of sleep may mean a loss of control of your portions the next day and an increased craving for sweets, fat and carbohydrates. Shoot for eight hours of sleep each night and you're more likely to achieve great skin, great productivity at work and home and a great weight!

DIGESTIVE Issues

Slow Digestion or digestive problems = Weight GAIN

Time and time again I have fixed digestive troubles in people and weight loss is one of the many great health results.

These are general topics if you wish to learn why YOU are not losing weight....schedule an appointment. I've achieved wonders with nutrition naturopathy and acupuncture...don't delay.... make an appointment today...

 How Balanced are YOU???

In order to function properly, the body has to be able to keep the levels of certain chemicals and compounds in the body at a near steady-state. This is known as homeostasis and it is a critical part of all living organisms. As a result, your body needs to keep certain fluids, such as the blood, slightly alkaline.

Acidity and Health

The chemical environment of the body affects the way that many different cells and proteins work. For example, the stomach needs to be acidic in order for digestive proteins to properly function. If a compartment in the body becomes too acidic or too alkaline, proteins can change their shape, the Food Science department at Ohio State University notes, which can cause them to be unable to function properly.

Blood and pH

The balance of acids and bases in fluids can be measured using the pH scale, which defines neutrality as 7. Acids have a low pH and basic or alkaline substances have a high pH. The pH of the blood is tightly regulated because it has access to every tissue in the body; as a result, the pH of the blood is kept between 7.35 and 7.45, which makes it slightly alkaline. Other fluids in the body, such as saliva and urine, also have normal pH ranges, but these are more variable because changes in their pH will not have as dramatic on the body as a whole.

Regulation

Because the alkalinity of the blood is so critical, the human body has three ways of regulating blood pH. Carbon dioxide, which is a byproduct of the way cells use glucose, is mildly acidic; its levels can be controlled by changes in your breathing rate. The kidneys also can excrete excess acid via the urine. Finally, the blood is filled with special chemical mixes known as buffers, which work by resisting any sudden changes in pH.

Acidosis

If the pH of the blood gets too low, acidosis is the result. Acidosis can be caused by problems with breathing, resulting in respiratory acidosis. Metabolic acidosis, on the other hand, is the result of ingestion of acid-producing compounds, problems with metabolism, or the loss of alkaline fluids from the body, the Merck Manual reports. Mild acidosis can cause fatigue, nausea and vomiting. More severe acidosis can cause a headache and drowsiness, which may progress to stupor, a coma and death.

Effects of Food

The acidity and alkalinity of different food products has recently come into focus by groups that claim that you can increase your overall health by consuming alkaline foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Because the body has its own regulatory system for maintaining blood pH, it is unlikely that changing your diet can have any significant long-term effect on the alkalinity of your blood, InteliHealth notes.  Diet does make a big difference in the alkalinity or acidity of your body's tissue, and overall HEALTH!

Here is a summary of some of the more salient points of the September Consumer Reports article I posted about yesterday:

Yonkers, NY – In a new report in its September issue and online at www.ConsumerReports.orghttp://www.consumerreports.org/cro/supplements912, Consumer Reports identifies ten hazards that might surprise the large swath of American adults—more than 50 percent—who take vitamins, herbs, or other nutritional supplements.

“Patients sometimes assume that supplements are safe because they are ‘all natural,' but not all supplements are truly natural. In fact, one of the greatest safety hazards to consumers involves supplements that have been spiked with prescription drugs or toxic metals,” said Jose Luis Mosquera, M.D., medical adviser, Consumer Reports, and an internist who specializes in integrative health and medicine.

http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/cols/www/delivery/ck.php?oaparams=2__bannerid=123__zoneid=10__cb=bcc7619738__oadest=http://www.myfmbank.com/
Consumer Reports identifies ten hazards distilled from interviews with experts, published research, and its own analysis of reports of serious adverse events submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Here are some of the hazards discussed in the report, plus advice for staying safe:

Supplements are not risk-free.  More than 6,300 reports describing an excess of 10,300   serious outcomes, including 115 deaths and more than 2,100 hospitalizations, 1,000 serious injuries or illnesses, 900 emergency-room visits, and some 4,000 other important medical events, streamed into the FDA from supplement companies, consumers, health-care providers, and others between 2007 and mid-April 2012.

CR notes that the reports by themselves don't prove that supplements caused the problems, but the raw numbers are cause for concern. Current laws make it difficult for the FDA to order a problem product off the market. In fact, to date, the FDA has banned only one ingredient, ephedrine alkaloids.

Protect yourself: Search the FDA's website at www.fda.gov for warnings, alerts, or voluntary recalls involving a supplement you are thinking of taking.  If you suspect you're having a bad reaction to a supplement, tell your doctor. You can also report your problem to the FDA at 800-332-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch.

Some supplements are really prescription drugs.  According to Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D, director of the FDA's Division of Dietary Supplement Programs, dietary supplements spiked with prescription drugs are the “largest threat” to consumer safety.   Many recalled products have the same or similar active ingredients as prescription drugs such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and sibutramine (Meridia, a weight-loss drug that was removed from the market in 2010 because of evidence that it increased the risk of heart attacks and strokes).

Others contained synthetic steroids.  “As a result, adulterated products can cause some of the same side effects and interactions that a consumer may be trying to avoid by opting for supplements instead of prescription drugs,” says Dr. Mosquera.

Protect yourself. Consult your doctor if you are having trouble in the bedroom (it could indicate an underlying health problem).  And try to slim down with diet and exercise.  Build muscle by weight training.

You can overdose on vitamins and minerals.  Unless your health-care provider tells you that you need more than 100 percent of the recommended daily intake of a particular nutrient, you probably don't.  Megadoses of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K can cause problems, and even some standard doses may interfere with certain prescription medicines.  “Surprisingly, some people may experience adverse effects from even normal doses of a vitamin or mineral supplement, especially patients with digestive issues or those who take blood thinners,” says Dr. Mosquera.

Protect yourself: Using information from the labels on the supplements and food you routinely consume, add up your daily exposure to everything, and then check CR's “How much is too much?” table to see if you're overdoing it.

You can't depend on warning labels.  For one thing, the FDA doesn't require them on supplements with one important exception, iron.  In a market basket study of 233 products purchased online and in the New York City metropolitan area, Consumer Reports found wide variations and inconsistencies in labeling.

Protect yourself:  Make sure your doctor or pharmacist knows what supplements and prescription drugs you are taking or thinking of taking.  You can also check for interactions by using Consumer Reports' “Guide: 100+ Commonly Used Supplements.” To access the free guide, go to www.ConsumerReports.org/healthhttp://www.consumerreports.org/health and click on “Natural Health.”

Heart and cancer protection: not proven.  Omega-3 pills and antioxidants are widely thought to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, respectively, and millions of women take calcium to protect their bones. But recent evidence casts doubt on whether those supplements are as safe or effective as assumed.  The report notes that the widely held view that fish-oil pills help prevent cardiovascular disease hit a snag when a study of 12,500 people with diabetes or prediabetes and a high risk of heart attack or stroke found no difference in the death rate from cardiovascular disease or other outcomes between those given a 1-gram fish-oil pill every day and those given a placebo.  These findings were published in a June 11th, 2012, issue of New England Journal of Medicine online report.

Consumer Reports also notes a recent blow against calcium supplements by German and Swiss researchers who followed almost 24,000 adults for an average of 11 years.  They found that regular users of calcium supplements had an 86 percent increased heart-attack risk compared with those who didn't use supplements, as reported in the June 2012 issue of the Journal Heart.

Protect yourself: Lay off the antioxidant supplements and reduce your cancer risk safely by quitting smoking, avoiding excessive alcohol, and eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and whole grains.

To put some of this information in perspective for our clients and readers, the risks cited in this article are quite small when one considers that according to the AMA 290 deaths occur each day due to prescription drugs

As no one seems to believe these numbers are real, I'll quote the source: The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Vol 284, No 4, July 26th 2000, authored by Dr Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH, of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

That study, which is twelve years old -- and drug deaths have risen considerably since then -- documents 106,000 deaths per year from the "adverse effects" of FDA-approved prescription medications.

That being said,  two take away lessons are true....nothing on this earth is completely risk free, and yes,  as with any product know exactly where it is coming from, who the manufacter is and what their safety record is.  As I published earlier this year here in my Dateline Story our distributor Emerson as well as our Manufacturers: Douglas Labs, RxVitamins, Emerita, Metagenics and all the others I represent and distribute have an IMMACULATE safety profile and their quality control measures are available for all to see...and speak for themselves!

As stated in my Dateline rebuttal,  reports of supplements adulterated with drugs and toxins are associated only with fly by night, unscrupulous operations that no one knows anything about.  While I recognize our products cost a bit more they are substances you are putting into your bodies and therefore should be taken seriously indeed!

I agree with the report that people can and do overdose on vitamins and herbs.  Many first time clients appear at my clinic in Arlington Heights with bags of things they are taking with no knowlege or wisdom whatsoever...one of the first things I do is make certain they haven't overdosed or created a conflict with their medications.  The interaction resource linked above is a good reference for laypersons.  I also agree that many supplements widely sold are unregulated drugs and some actually contain toxins and drugs.  I do not sell or dispense these items and never have or will!   I only prescribe and dispense natural supplements that have existed for aeons and have an excellent safety profile and been thoroughly researched.

I  also agree and do not like to see people self treating for symptoms that may be indicative of medical problems.  These symptoms should be investigated by the individual and their medical doctors.  It is also possible to overload on a vitamin such as D  or iron, even if you have been tested as deficient in since people respond to vitamin therapy in their own unique fashion and time.

Lastly, with respect to research and epidemiologic studies as non scientists many people can be misled by sensational headlines,  when in fact, with respect to epidemiology two things are in fact true.  One, NEVER can conclusions be drawn from these studies with regard to specific nutrients.  These studies sometimes illuminate areas in need of more study with controlled experiments, but really nothing more....

Lastly, calcification of arteries and heart attacks is again a complex physiologic and biochemical area...here is a review of the actual process:

Cardiovascular calcification, or the buildup of calcium plaques in the arteries of the heart, presents an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Bits of plaque can break off and be carried by the bloodstream to critical junctures in the body and brain causing serious illness and death.

A variety of factors can cause calcification, including lack of exercise, a high-fat,  high-sugar diet, obesity, diabetes,  and low intake of vitamin K. To reduce the risk of further calcification, physicians generally recommend treatment with cholesterol-reducing drugs, diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes.  To suggest that the cause is calcium supplementation is well,  simplistic at best...but certainly grabs attention!

Life can be a dirty place, and whether you're 20 or 100 you've probably accumulated some excess toxins in your body and some emotional baggage in your mind. These poisons can come from concrete things like pesticides in your food, pollution and  chemicals that you consume in the form of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Taking regular breaks away from the daily grind is essential for emotional peace and physical health.
But they can also be more abstract, in the form of things like too much stress, negative media, advertising, relationship problems and inner conflicts. So when you think about detoxing, it's important to not only detoxify your body but also your mind and spirit.
14 Essential Detox Tips
While spring is often considered the ideal time to detox, fall,  is also an important season for cleansing. The shorter days and cooler temperatures lead to decreases in your metabolism and mood, and may trigger a desire to eat more than you normally do. Detoxing in the spring andfall can help to lift your spirits, increase your energy and help you feel your best.  Ideally, a real detoxification program takes into account a person's health, motivation lifestyle and attitude.
However, some other forms of detoxing can become a part of your everyday life. The tips that follow include these, and I recommend using them on a regular basis to keep your life mentally, physically and emotionally healthy and in balance.
1.         EXERCISE:It will help you relieve stress and improves your circulation and overall health.
2.      Eat organic. As much as possible, choose foods free of pesticides, genetically modified ingredients and other additives. If you must budget, choose organic animal products (meat, eggs and dairy) first, as they tend to accumulate toxins faster. Next, choose organic versions of the most heavily polluted produce, such as these 20 fruits and vegetables with the most pesticides.
3.      Be careful of what drugs you take. Sometimes medication is necessary, but you may want to think twice before use many cause side effects and may contain chemicals that can damage your liver and kidneys.
4.      Quit smoking. Cigarettes contain over 4,000 different chemicals.
5.      Use natural cleaning products in your home. Using typical cleaning sprays and air fresheners at least once a week can increase your problems with allergy and asthma.
Instead, opt for microfiber or steam for all of your cleaning needs.
If you choose to use cleaning products, you can opt for natural varieties such as Enviro-Rite or other green cleaners.
6.      MEDITATE It's a simple (and free) way to detoxify your mind and spirit.
7.      Make sure you're SLEEPING  well. Like refueling a car or taking a drink of water, it's thought that sleep refreshes your body and helps to restore the energy that you've used up during the day. Says Dr. Neil B. Kavey, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, sleep is the time when your body is able to do repair work.
8.      Limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol is a poison, and in excess amounts it will cause harm to your body. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, most adults can use alcohol moderately -- meaning up to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women and older people -- and not experience problems. (One drink equals one 12-ounce bottle of beer or wine cooler, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.)
9.      FORGIVE Most of us will harbor (or are harboring right now) feelings of pain, anger, resentment and hurt against someone we feel did us wrong. If they are not released, by way of forgiveness, these negative notions will slowly drain your energy while fanning the fires of chronic stress.
10. Turn off the TV. Your mind needs a break from the advertisements, the negative news and the celebrity gossip.
11. DeCLUTTER One of the basic tenants of feng shui, which is an ancient art of creating a harmonious environment in your home using space, placement of objects, color and more to keep vital energy aligned, is that clutter represents stagnant energy.
In order for energy, or chi, to flow -- and therefore for your home to feel peaceful, support your mental and emotional well-being and provide a sanctuary for you to reside in -- the clutter must be cleared.

Make sure anything you put in or on your body (food, personal care products, makeup) is as pure and toxin-free as possible.
11.   VOLUNTEER. People who donate their time to a cause report feeling a heightened sense of well-being, relief from insomnia, and various other physical, mental and emotional benefits.
12. Switch to natural personal care products. The vast majority -- some 89 percent -- of the 10,500 ingredients used in personal care products (products that you rub into your scalp and skin, spread onto your face and trust on your body) have never been evaluated for safety by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) panel, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or any other institution.  I have been in the process of formulating an all natural skin care line since my debacle with a sunscreen three years ago...98% organic free of parabens, toxins, and other unmentionables it contains the highest levels of "skinceuticals" available anywhere.  If you'd like more information and samples as they become available please email me doctaryn@aol.com and I will add you to my list for notifications.
 13. Challenge your mind. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that challenging your brain with mentally stimulating leisure activities (including playing board games or cards, doing crossword puzzles, reading, writing, and playing musical instruments) is great for your mind. 14. Tune out things that bring you down. This could be your gossiping coworkers, a meddling relative, or annoying instant messages. Whatever the poison, learn to ignore it for your own sanity's sake.

I have postponed our detox article for this week in order to address concerns stemming from a Dateline program which aired this week:

March 19, 2011
Are Dietary Supplements Safe?
Dateline NBC Tonight — March 18, 2012

Story Overview
Chris Hansen of Dateline aired a 30 minute story on March 18th, 2012 that detailed poor quality and dangerous dietary supplement manufacturing and testing practices. The story featured a dietary supplement, Total Body Formula (a liquid multivitamin weight loss product). Several consumers were interviewed who suffered harm (dramatically illustrated by complete hair loss). Chris Hansen's investigation determined that the product contained dangerous levels of selenium due to an error in how the product was manufactured. Additionally, the story showed tape from court proceedings in which a manufacturing employee recounted unacceptable manufacturing processes, such as the use of panty hose to strain out unidentified black particulate from the supplement mixture. Further, to compound the situation, this product was not tested accurately. Specifically, the lab (Atlas Bioscience) that ‘tested' this product produced a certificate of analysis that failed to find the high selenium.  This lab was investigated by Chris Hansen posing as a supplement manufacturer. In this investigation, the lab produced a certificate of analysis without any findings, despite the fact that the sample provided by Dateline had been purposefully adulterated with arsenic (toxic heavy metal) and sibutramine (an appetite suppressant drug). When labs provide certificate of analyses that are not based on testing, the practice is known in the industry as ‘dry-labbing'. Dateline interviewed Dan Fabricant, Director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs at the FDA, who spoke to the FDA's current and continued efforts to crack down on these practices.
Strengths of the story
  • The investigation highlighted a serious issue which the dietary supplement industry itself is concerned about.
  • The investigation did not characterize the poorly made and tested supplement as indicative of the state of the industry as whole. At the outset of the story, Chris Hansen noted that the majority of dietary supplement manufacturers and laboratories are responsible and produce safe supplements.
  • Dateline stressed the importance of using licensed or otherwise qualified laboratories to test dietary supplements.

Limitations of this story
  • While this investigation revealed a significant problem, it did not include context in terms of the many reputable and responsible dietary supplement manufacturers and laboratories. The result was a report that could be interpreted to mean that the relatively few ‘bad actors' in the industry represent the industry as a whole – which they do not.
  • This report did not present the integrative healthcare provider as a viable solution – a knowledgeable guide for the public in their use of dietary supplements.
  • There was no mention of the many industry self-policing activities including third party certification of manufacturing (NSF, NPA, etc.), acceptable laboratory qualification and certification practices (ISO certification, split sample testing, etc.) and additional industry self-initiated quality efforts such as our distributor: (Emerson Quality Program, Natural Products Foundation TruLabel Program, etc.)

Suggested actions based on this story
  • Practitioners, like myself,  have a responsibility to provide their patients with recommendations based upon reliably high quality dietary supplements.

  • Emerson Quality ProgramSM(EQP):
  • Emerson Quality Program (emersonecologics.com/quality) provides a thorough summary of the specific quality specifications and practices of each participating brand. [Logged in practitioners can click on the seal of any EQP Partner brand and then view their detailed Quality Summary for a full view into their manufacturing and testing practices.]
  • EQP Partners have been assessed by:
    - A rigorous review of their standard operating procedures, ingredient and product specifications, supplier and laboratory qualification program
    - Independent product testing by one of Emerson's qualified laboratories (each one qualified by an on-site audit, document review and blind split sample testing)

    -
On-site audit of all EQP Gold Partners and any other EQP Partner who has not been audited by a third party certifier (NSF, NPA, etc.) within the last year

  • One of the most important benefits for patients who seek guidance from healthcare professionals is that they obtain individualized supplement recommendations and are then monitored for response. Regular monitoring by a trained healthcare practitioner will help to identify adverse reactions in a timely manner and thus minimize the potential for harm from supplements.
  • We agree with the call of the dietary supplement industry to the FDA to take strong enforcement action against unscrupulous dietary supplement brands, manufacturers and testing companies.
  • We actively support the use of safe and high quality dietary supplements in the optimization of health.

Well,  we're almost a month into 2012....how many health resolutions have you kept?  Here are some health resolutions that you'll want to keep for the rest of the year....seriously.

#1 keep resolutions easy and reasonable and so easy it is hard to break them...like the following....

#2 Listen to a song you love everyday.  University of Maryland medical school found major health benefits attached to listening to ONE song like....26% increase in arterial width, decreased blood pressure and increasing circulation.

#3 Eat only foods you LIKE...and find more of them.  Most people fail making dietary changes because they are convinced that they need to eat foods they dislike.  The right idea is to eat healthy foods you like and expand those foods. It is also important to not deprive oneself of unhealthy foods you really like but limit them to once per week.  I think dietary quality is the most important health habit ever. If you need help with this come in.

#4 Take some vitamin D. A nutrition superstar,  vitamin D is linked to every good thing from immunity to bone health and has recently been linked to seasonal affective disorder and depression.  I can test for your D level in my office or you can take a reasonable dose...here is a product you can purchase in my store....as a liquid it is readily absorbed. Liquid D-3

#5 Get a (SEX) life!

Having sex more often regulates hormones, reduces pain, relieves depression, and reduces anxiety. It also burns calories and helps cardiac health.

#6 Cheers!  Having a drink with friends is even more beneficial presumably because the laughing, joking and support potentiates the health impact of moderate drinking.

#7 Watch a comedy...heaven knows that there is enough heavy, negative energy everywhere.  A comedy boosts your mood and allays anxiety and loneliness.

#8 Take a Tea Break....telomeres are a new health buzzword and can predict how quickly you are aging. I can test for telomeres in my office thanks to Spectracell labs so please stop in and pick up a brochure about that. Until then, studies have shown that as little as three cups of tea per day can increase telomeres which translates into about 4.6 years of aging.

#9 Take an entire day off per week. Helsinki University researchers have identified that people who do not stop working are three times more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke.  Everyone needs some free and alone time otherwise stress chemicals really escalate.

#10  Choose only whole grains...recent research has shown that they contain as many antioxidants as vegetables and fruits.

Tomorrow I will launch our February website and events.  I am beginning a new program for my best clients at that time. I will notify you by invitation on how to log in to that information which will qualify you for exclusive classes, articles and promotions.

Did you know that my natural pharmacy is open 24 hours per day???  Orders placed here are filled the next business day and you can HOLD THEM FOR PICK UP, should you not want them to be shipped....here's the link...

Your visits and product purchases support the valuable work I do. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service.  Hope to see you soon.

           Healthy Food Healthy Body!

Deciding what to incorporate into your diet may be difficult with all of the items on the market but certain foods are considered to be the best for your health. Several authorities recommend the folowing ten foods that should be included in everyone's diet because they contain phytonutrients and vitamins which are known to decrease the risk of certain cancers, prevent heart disease and boost your immune system. These items are also good choices because a small volume of these has huge health benefits. Check out these high octane super foods.  If you need help with healthy eating be sure to schedule an appointment.

Although the pear shaped nut doesn't look like it can offer much; a palm full of almonds is an average serving offering nutrients such as fiber, riboflavin, magnesium, iron and calcium. The almond has more calcium than any other nut and one serving will provide 1/2 the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin E. They are also great to curb hunger and handful of these before a meal will keep you from over eating.

Apples seem to be a favorite among kids and adults and often it's being eaten without realizing the amazing health benefit of the glossy fruit. Apples contain pectin, a soluble fiber, that can lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It is also packed with vitamin C which is great antioxidant.

Another small fruit, blueberries, are worth their weight in antioxidants and phytonutrients. This bright color fruit is similar to that of a cranberry and can help ward off urinary tract infections. It's also low on the glycemic index making it a good fruit addition for someone who is doing a low carbohydrate diet, or who has diabetes.

Broccoli should be incorporated into the diet on a regular basis due to it's high content of antioxidants and phytonutrients. These nutrients are a combination of compounds that help with chronic disease and contains calcium and potassium. Broccoli is a strong cancer fighter and cancer preventer.

Although red beans are full of phytonutrients which may help disease beans are also loaded with vitamins such as iron, magnesium, and potassium. Red beans are also great for vegan eating because they are high in protein and fiber but low in calories.

Essential Fatty acids (EFA's) are not created in the body so what better source than salmon to get a dose of omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is a great source of protein and the omega-3's are great for a healthy heart. These EFA's have been noted to help decrease blood clots that could be the cause of heart attacks.

Spinach may look like just another leafy vegetable, but it's a great way to increase your immune system. This little leaf is high in folate, vitamin A and C, as well as, helps to keep your hair and skin healthy.

The orange color of a sweet potato is the first sign it's rich in beta carotene. This antioxidant is known for aiding in slowing the aging process and can possibly reduce the risks of some cancers. One small sweet potato only has 54 calories and is a complex carbohydrate making it a good source of sustained energy.

Green juices are a great source of getting many awesome nutrients into your diet, especially if you prefer not to eat vegetables. Tomato juice has antioxidants such as lycopene which is good for the prostate, reducing cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer. Most commercial products have way too much sodium. My top selling Green's First is a wonderful source of the best nutrients available and a little goes a long way.

Wheat germ is actually the small center of the wheat seed that is responsible for growth of the new sprout. It's full of vitamins and nutrients and even has protein, fiber and some fat.

I'd prefer organic forms of these foods but if that is too pricey regular is FINE!

See you next week!

A few years ago my client had a small bald spot on her head, which had quickly progressed. This was definitely a very traumatic experience for her. When she came to see me I quickly returned her to her medical doctor concerned she might have had a medical problem. She went to the doctor and we were very relieved when she was diagnosed with idiopathic alopecia.   At that point, I was able to question her regarding her life and stress habits and learned that she was under an enormous amount of work stress. I gave her acupuncture to relieve her stress and some vitamins which were getting depleted. A few weeks after that conversation, the spot was completely covered in hair and we soon forgot the whole matter.
Since many men and women are concerned  about  hair loss, and see me about it. I decided to devote a Forum to the topic.
                                    Hair Facts 101
  1. Our hair is made of a protein called keratin.
  2. A hair consists in a hair shaft (what we see), a root below the skin, and a follicle from which the hair roots grows.
  3. The hair's color pigment, or melanin is produced at the hair bulb which is located at the lower end of the follicle.
  4. A 50 to 100 loss of hair per day is considered normal. Any amount of hair over that, might mean that something is wrong.
  5. Hair loss is directly connected to stress either physical or mental, sometimes that stress is caused by excessive work, family problems or major illness or surgeries.
  6. Hair loss can be caused by hormonal problems, and correcting the hormone imbalance may stop the hair loss. Hormones problems can be caused by an overactive or underactive thyroid gland. This can happen with men the same way that with women due to an imbalance of the androgen(male hormones) or estrogen(female hormones)
  7. Hair loss can seem excessive after 3 months of giving birth, this is also a hormone fluctuation; during pregnancy high level of specific hormones usually cause the body to keep the hair that was supposed to fall naturally. So is considered normal that when the hormones acquire the pre pregnancy levels, that hair falls and starts the natural growth and loss cycle.
  8. Hair loss is caused by the use of certain medicines or treatments, specially blood thinner medicines (anticoagulants), gout medicines, chemotherapy medicines (used for cancer treatment), Vit A (in big amounts) as well as birth control pills and antidepressants. Hair loss should stop when you stop taking the medicines or doing the treatment. You should communicate your concerns to your physician and he can suggest you a change of medicines or treatment that won't cause hair loss.
  9. Hair loss can be caused by yeast or  fungal infections of the scalp,  or auto immune disorders.
  10. Hair loss can be caused by the use of tight pigtails, cornrows, hair rollers and well as by hot oil treatment or chemicals frequently used in permanents (perms). This kind of hair loss is called traction alopecia and can stop when the pulling and the use of chemicals stop.
  11. One kind of hair loss called alopecia areata is caused by the person's own immune system. This autoimmune disease starts in small round bald patches on the scalp and can get bigger in some cases. The hair often grows back naturally within the year but those patients might experience that kind of alopecia again.
  12. Hair loss can be caused by poor nutrition. Anorexic and bulimic people lose their hair because their body doesn't get the necessary proteins, vitamins and minerals needed to make the hair grow. Vegetarian persons can also experience hair loss if they don't get enough proteins from non-meat resources.
  13. A very frequent kind of alopecia commonly called male-pattern is actually called androgenic alopecia. This might be caused not only by genetic factors but by a combination of many other factors including hormones usually excess testosterone. There is an excellent supplement formula which combats this over a period of three to four months. It is also common in people who take steroids.
  14. You can benefit and take good care of your hair by eating a balanced, healthy diet. Any one of a number of nutrient deficiencies can cause hair loss.
  15. You should avid rubbing your hair too vigorously with the towel, you should let it dry naturally.
  16. If you are experiencing hair loss or you have a genetic factor that might cause you hair loss, you should avoid using a blow dryer or if is absolutely necessary then use it on a lowest heat setting.
  17. Is better to style your hair when dry or damp, if you do it while your hair is wet, it can stretch and easily break.
  18. Avoid the use of chemicals if you have experiencing hair loss.
  19. If you are about to start chemicals for your hair, like straighteners or color, you should try first on a small spot on the back to check for allergies and hair loss, then after a few days proceed to the application to your whole head.
Visit our Healthy Hair Aisle of our store for excellent natural interventions for hair loss we also have a beautiful skin beautique for healthy skin! Visit our hair loss aisle right here: at our natural pharmacy!  Some of my favorite solutions are right here***************************************************************************************************************
Natural solutions to hair loss involve identifying the underlying cause and supporting the body's health so that it is reflected in the hair. Mesotherapy acupuncture involving follicle stimulation and nutrients applied to the scalp  has been very helpful for several of my clients which I have performed weekly for a period of two to three months has hastened the growth process. I learned about this first hand after my sunscreen debacle a couple of years ago….
