Cancer Cell Image: SangerAC.UK

Most people have absolutely NO idea that their gut comprises 70% of their immune system. This occurs as a vast network of lymphatic system known as the Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue of GALT.

Now researchers have learned that:

A bile acid – a cholesterol-derived bioactive lipid, lithocholic acid  has been recently suggested to cause considerable lifespan extension in yeast.  Produced by the liver, it is a potent cancer fighter!

Vladimir Titorenko, from Concordia University (Canada), and colleagues have revealed that when entering a cancer cell, lithocholic acid attacks the cells' mitochondria to cause cell death.  Submitting that: “[lithocholic acid] exhibits a substantial cytotoxic or cancer cell killing effects in cultured cancer cells derived from different tissues and organisms,” the study authors posit that: “The molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the robust anti-aging and anti-tumor effects of lithocholic acid have emerged.”

Disruptions in gut microbiology, liver or gallbladder disease or even high intake of dietary inflammatory fats may disrupt this process.

This is definitely a very important finding and another HUGE reason to get your gut in tip top shape! It is unknown whether medications affect this bile acid but I suspect they would.

What do Obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression chronic allergies, hostilility,  defiance, perfectionism and other personality traits and disorders all have in common? They are disorders that could all be caused by a process of undermethylation – which is a result of elevated histamine levels.

Slightly elevated histamine levels may result in strong motivation, attention to detail, or wonderful detail and organizational abilities, but these postive traits become disordered with increased histamine levels and can present as obsessive compulsive behavior, perfectionism, over-competitiveness or other behavioral problems.

An adult who is an undermethylator, might in fact achieve levels of success, but may also be an over-achiever who struggles with addictions or other compulsive behaviours. Children may be self-motivated and goal-oriented, but may have problems with authority, social skills, or develop an obsession for certain activities.

The biochemistry of undermethylation:

“Methylation” is a process where chemicals called “methyl groups” are added to various elements of DNA, proteins and other molecules to help keep them in good working condition. Histamine is one of the chemicals which requires methylation to be metabolised correctly.

If histamine is “undermethylated”, it can stagnate and build up in the system. When blood contains high levels of histamine the excess histamine is stored in the blood basophils (a type of white blood cell involved with inflammatory reactions in your body) and brain neurons.

This in turn can result in low levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine – the chemicals responsible for making us feel good. Despite a high energy drive, those suffering from excess histamine can often also show symptoms of depression due to low serotonin levels.

Treatment options for Undermethylation

Undermethylation has a tendency towards disrupting other nutrients such as: low levels of calcium, magnesium, methionine and B6, and an excess of folic acid, so dietary changes and correct supplementation are the key to correcting undermethylation.

Of course, before rushing out to stock up on vitamins and minerals, it is important to correctly diagnose undermethylation which can be done with a diagnostic blood test available to identify histamine levels – one marker for the methylation process. The correct dosage and combination of nutrients can then be assessed based on your specific needs and what else is going on in your body, and progress can be monitored not only through symptoms, but also blood testing.

Contact us if you would like more information regarding testing and treatment of high histamine levels.

Image and  historic information from Hippocrates.com

Hippocrates medical theories and conclusions are based on his data and research and demonstrated  that disease was a natural process; that the signs and symptoms of a disease were caused by the natural reactions of the body to a disease process; and that the chief role of the physician was to aid the natural resistance of the body to overcome the metabolic imbalance and restore health and harmony to the organism.

Hippocrates was born on the island of Cos, off the southwest coast of Asia Minor, or present-day Turkey, around 460 B.C.  His father was a physician-priest in the Asclepion at Cos, and his family could trace its lineage back to the legendary Asclepius.  Hippocrates lived a very long life and died at a ripe old age in the town of Larissa in Thessaly.

History of Hippocratic Medicine

Physiology and pathology theory within Hippocratic medicine was based on the Four Humors.  A united harmony between all four humors working in tandem was necessary for good health.

The Four Humors are:

Pneuma - the Breath or Vital Force, and the Innate Heat, which were suffused into the blood from the lungs via the heart, gave the blood the power to sustain life.

Hippocrates saw pepsis, or an orderly, balanced, harmonious digestion and metabolism of the Four Humors as being essential to all good health.  In disorders of pepsis Hippocrates saw the origin of most disease.  I must add that we are driven home this point time and time again in Naturopathic College.  Being an original thinker, I did not accept the tenets and wisdom of this truth until practicing for about three years.  Now, daily I see the truth that if something is awry with digestion, fix that first because EVERYTHING else will improve as well.

I have gleaned both personally and from thousands of patients that digestion IS the cornerstone of good health, and by this I mean good health in every respect, bodily, emotionally, spiritually and mentally.  Daily, I am fortunate enough to see people transformed completely by healing their digestion and restoring harmony to their bodies. This is why I chose to specialize in naturopathic treatment of digestive disorders.

While  Hippocrates' anatomical knowledge was basic his profound insights into human physiology and the soundness of his reasoning still stand.  His surgical techniques for dislocations of the hip and jaw were actually unsurpassed until the nineteenth century.

In therapeutics, Hippocrates saw the physician as the servant and facilitator of Nature.  This is also true in Naturopathic Medicine.  All medical treatment is aimed at enabling the natural resistance of the organism to prevail and overcome illness, to bring about recovery.
In treatments he prescribed, Hippocrates was very sensible, pragmatic and flexible in his approach, favoring conservatism and moderation over radical or extreme measures.  Bloodletting, which was much abused at other times in much of medical history, was used only rarely by Hippocrates, and even then, only applied conservatively.
Hippocrates placed great emphasis on strengthening and building up the body's inherent resistance to disease.  For this, he prescribed diet, gymnastics, exercise, massage, hydrotherapy and sea bathing.
Hippocrates was a great believer in dietary measures in the treatment of disease.  He prescribed a basic, light diet during the crisis stage of an acute illness, and a liquid diet during the treatment of fevers and wounds.
Hippocratic medicine was constitutionally based, so its approach to diagnosis and treatment was quite flexible.  As a holistic healing system, Hippocratic medicine treated the patient, and not disease.
Hippocrates was the first physician to systematically classify disease based on points of similarity and contrast between them.  He originated the disciplines of etiology and pathology.  By systematically classifying diseases, Hippocrates placed their diagnosis and treatment on a sounder footing.

Unfortunately, the current status has moved very far from ancient knowledge and wisdom of nature, those relationships and the body as a whole.  Instead, people have more and more "information" provided by more and more "experts"  and less and less wisdom regarding how things REALLY work in the natural world.  It is truly an obstacle in helping  so many of them.

If you glean just one thing from this article understand that there is NO health without proper digestion and assimilation.  A great diet, exercise and all the rest will not take you far with a digestive system that is not working optimally.  While it is not a simple process to remedy this, it is by far the most important health adventure you will ever undertake.

Who wouldn't wish to cut their cardiac disease risk in HALF while improving many other health parameters at the same time?  A longterm or longitudinal study sheds light on just that!

As recently published in the Journal of International Cardiology:

With previous studies suggesting this may support weight management, reduce the  risk of diabetes, lower blood pressure and lower blood cholesterol, the Mediterranean Diet features fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish, olive oil, and a modest dose of red wine.

Ekavi Georgousopoulou, from Harokopio University (Greece), and colleagues analyzed data from a representative sample of more than 2,500 Greek adults, ages 18 to 89 years, who provided researchers with their health information each year from 2001 to 2012. Participants also completed in-depth surveys about their medical records, lifestyle and dietary habits at the start of the study, after five years and after 10 years. Nearly 20% of the men and 12% of the women who participated in the study developed or died from heart disease.

The researchers assessed the subjects diets, ranking them in terms of adherence to the Mediterranean diet.  Those who closely followed the diet were 47% less likely to develop heart disease over the 10-year follow-up period, as compared to participants who were less compliant to the dietary style.  For each one-point increase in the dietary score (indicating compliance with the Mediterranean diet) associated with a 3% drop in heart disease risk.

Hate healthy foods?  Consider a product like our Green's First which may provide many of these benefits in a convenient form.  Please purchase a FRESH product from us and not an old, expired warehoused cheaper non effective product for these benefits.

Almost 100% of patients present to my clinic with some form of significant anxiety.  Of these, I wind up treating the anxiety specifically in only about 10%.  Anxiety to me, is a symptom not a true disorder for most.  Frankly, in most people, I find that this symptom means that there is some underlying serious physical disorder.  Correction of the underlying disorder corrects the anxiety without any specific treatment.  I become therefore alarmed when people take things to mask this important symptom as it is very important to get to the root cause before disaster strikes, and I am sorry but eventually it will.

So what are some causes of anxiety in my patients?

There are as may causes of anxiety as there are maladies.  Some of the ones I see most typically are:

BLOOD DEFICIENCY

Blood deficiency is a different term than simply anemia although it includes that concept as well. It refers to the body's overall nourishment and fluids.  This is a serious disorder as it impedes nourishment to major organs especially the liver and heart.  Blood deficiency is usually caused by long term digestive and absorptive problems and needs to be corrected immediately before long term damage occurs.  Other reasons for blood deficiency are traumas, surgeries or giving birth and losing massive amounts of blood.

DIGESTIVE DISORDERS

Digestion is such a crucial aspect of health that  digestive disease and disharmonies cause anxiety in just about every client I have seen and in 16 years I have seen a lot.  In fact, anxiety and panic disorders are of extreme help to many of my clients in that it propels them forward to see me and receive the help they need.

Nutrient deficiencies from A-Z can cause anxiety and are usually part and parcel of the disorders above. Some specific deficiencies are:

In a study of people with panic disorder, OCD and depression,  the B vitamin inositol in amounts of up to 18 grams daily was as effective and had fewer side effects than an anti-anxiety medication. This reflects my clinical experience, where I've found inositol to be very helpful with clients with obsessive and ruminating thoughts.

Vitamin B1 is important for blood sugar control and this has a major impact on anxiety. Vitamin B3 is involved in many enzymatic processes and plays a key role in serotonin synthesis. At does of 1,000 to 3,000 mg a day, it may be helpful for anxiety. Vitamin B5 is very important for the adrenals and therefore helps with modulating stress.  These high doses can also worsen symptoms so do not attempt without medical supervision.

Folic acid and vitamin B12 are important for depression, and given the links between anxiety and depression, they may also be helpful for anxiety. They also support heart health, which is important if you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, which stress the heart.

Good food sources of the B vitamins include liver, meat, turkey, whole grains, potatoes, bananas, chilies, legumes, nutritional yeast and molasses.

Magnesium and calcium

  • Magnesium is a calming mineral that nourishes the nervous system and helps prevent anxiety, fear, nervousness, restlessness and irritability. Magnesium is also very protective of the heart and arteries; again, this is important if you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks. Taking magnesium and calcium at bedtime can also help promote sleep. A very pleasant and easy way to increase your intake of magnesium is to add about a cup of Epsom salts to a warm bath—you'll absorb the magnesium through your skin. Add some lavender essential oil and have a wonderful calming soak before bed, and you'll sleep better too.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in eggs and fatty fish such as salmon ad mackerel (and cod liver oil), but your body can also make its own vitamin D after exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, though this is somewhat dependent on the season and your geographic location. It may improve seasonal anxiety and depression that worsen during the winter months. One study showed that vitamin D deficiency was associated with both anxiety and depression in fibromyalgia patients. Vitamin D is also important for immunity, bone health and heart health, and it helps protect against cancer.

Omega-3s and omega-6s

It's well known that omega-3s from fish oil (EPA and DHA) are effective for alleviating depression, and one study looking at substance abusers with low fish consumption found that supplementing with fish oil for three months resulted in less anxiety and anger. I recommend that you eat fish, including some oil fish, such as salmon and sardines, and only supplement with fish oil if you know for sure that your levels of omega-3s are low. A good starting dose is 1,000 mg daily. Fatty acid tests are available from labs such as Metametrix; results will indicate whether you need to supplement with omega-3s, omega-6s or both, and will also indicate your levels of damaging trans fats. Many anxious people with pyroluria don't need to supplement with omega-3s but do seem to need the omega-6 GLA, ideally in the form of primrose oil.

Theanine and lactium

L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea, has a calming effect and reduces physiological responses to stress. It also raises levels of GABA, the calming neurotransmitter. It also has properties that offer protection against environmental neurotoxins. A typical supplemental dose of theanine is 50 to 200 mg.

Lactium, a supplement made from the casein protein in milk, has been shown to reduce stress-related symptoms, including anxiety, emoyinal and social problems, and digestive issues. This product also lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Anxiety is such a robber of health and creates so much stress on a body that is already MAJORLY stressed that I encourage anyone to seek out qualified holistic healthcare and do what is necessary to resolve the cause. That then is the TRUE anxiety answer.

We have some great Forums coming for this month and beyond so I hope you will check our events!  Today's forum is about E cigarettes! E cigarettes are largely believed to be safer than traditional cigarettes. Is this in fact TRUE? One of my patients asked me this very question, and when I said I couldn't answer him intelligently, I decided to research this and to post in as a forum.  What I learned is quite interesting!

Firstly,  E cigarettes are recommended as "safer" cigarettes but in the context of temporary use as a smoking cessation tool not a subsitute. There may be some merit to this as studies show about 20% of users do quit smoking.

Recently though, the California Department of Public Health has deemed E cigarettes a public health hazard.

Here's why:

Studies have shown that formaldehyde a known carcinogen is present in E cigs.

A very recent study has shown that even one brief exposure to E cigs primary ingredient propylene glycol causes immediate airway changes similar to asthma in users.  It is unknown if these changes are progressive and permanent.

Another new study has demonstrated that e cigarettes raise inflammation in the body...never a good thing.

E cigs are unregulated by the FDA there are currently 500 brands and no one knows the content of them. There is also great variation in nicotine content.

Since no long term studies exist and lung tissue is unforgiving I would pass on E cigarettes.  For permanent smoking cessation try acupuncture instead.

Embarrassed about your feet? Specifically your toenails? You are NOT alone. At least 80% of the GI dysbiosis patients I see have terrible toenail fungus as well as almost 10% of the population, that's A LOT of people with ugly feet.  If you have been struggling with this common disorder....read on for some REAL help!

Also known as onychomycosis and tinea unguium, nail fungal infections are the most common diseases of the nails, making up about 50% of nail abnormalities. Both fingernails and toenails are susceptible and it manifests as discoloration and thickening of the nail and crumbling edges. The condition most commonly occurs in toenails.

Between six and eight percent of the adult population exhibit nail fungal infection.

Who gets nail fungus infections? and WHY?

Nail fungus infections are more common in men than women and in the elderly than the young. Additional traits or factors that raise one's risk of nail fungal infection include the following:
  • Diminished blood circulation
  • Slow growing nails
  • A family history of fungal infection (genetics)
  • Heavy perspiration
  • Humid or moist work environment
  • Wearing socks and shoes that prevent ventilation
  • Walking barefoot in damp public places (swimming pools, gyms and shower rooms)
  • Previous injury or infection to the skin or nail
  • Circulation problems,
  • a weakened immune system
  • Tight footwear with crowding of toes
  • Exercise that causes repeated minor trauma to the hyponychium (where the finger tip attaches to the nail)
  • What CAUSES Nail FUNGUS?
  • Because of the characteristic systemic nature of a Candida nail infection, treatment with topical antifungal medication is less effective. This explains why treatment procedures including nail removal will not cure the problem. The only effective  medical treatment for yeast nail infections is oral antifungal prescription medications like terbinafine , lamisil and itraconazole,  sporanox.

Since the underlying cause of a yeast nail infection may be the result of a systemic condition due to yeast  or bacterial overgrowths, getting tested and  treated  in a timely way is paramount to avoid further fungus-related health complications.  I recommend a visit to discuss your medical background and immune system as well as  conducts some systemic bacterial and fungal testing to reveal the abnormalities in your immune system.  Then we can begin treatment from the inside out.  ALL of our clients experience beautiful toenails as but ONE effect of their treatment.

Not interested? You can try this - FREE shipping, which has been helpful for some of our clients in conjunction with their programs.  We work nationally with clients!

Nutrition the new medicine of psychiatry?

With pharmacological approaches both costly in terms of finance as well as potential side effects as well as not accessible in developing countries, scientists and public health experts are looking at nutritional approaches to address mental health issues.  Could nutritional medicine soon become the mainstream in psychiatry?

A new study in a prestigious journal says YES!  Now, researcher Jerome Sarris, from the University of Melbourne (Australia), and colleagues submit that: “Evidence is steadily growing for the relation between dietary quality (and potential nutritional deficiencies) and mental health, and for the select use of nutrient-based supplements to address deficiencies, or as monotherapies or augmentation therapies.”  The team asserts that in addition to addressing quality of diet, there is  now sufficient evidence to support the notion of nutrient-based therapies to assist in the management of psychiatric disorders.

Many studies have demonstrated that a number of nutrients associate with brain health, including but certainly not limited to: omega-3s, B vitamins (particularly Folate and B12), choline, iron, zinc, magnesium, S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe), vitamin D, and amino acids.  The study authors urge that: “We advocate recognition of diet and nutrition as central determinants of both physical and mental health.”

Here as with all natural therapies it is CRUCIALLY important to recognize that one size does not fit all. Healing is a very individual matter.

I become very disheartened seeing legions of bloggers trying to assist each other in trial and error when I KNOW that individual biochemistry is the crux of dealing with these types or really any type of problem, naturally.  Biochemical/nutritional test results frequently surprise me, even in people who are supplementing heavily.

It is a relatively simple matter to work with a specialist, like myself who can evaluate you, do appropriate testing and help you get better!  Really, why waste YEARS and dollars on trial and error?

Let me know how I can help. Regards!

PS: I am thrilled with how many people have been concerned about the state of the environment.  It gives me HOPE!

Jerome Sarris, Alan C Logan, Tasnime N Akbaraly, G Paul Amminger, Vicent Balanzá-Martínez, Marlene P Freeman, et al.  “Nutritional medicine as mainstream in psychiatry.”  The Lancet Psychiatry, January 25, 2015.

How TOXIC is our water?, what is drinkable and healthiest amongst the thousands of options?...read further to find out!

  • Public water supplies in 42 U.S. states are contaminated with 141 unregulated chemicals for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has never even established safety standards, according to an investigation by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Tainted Tap Water Used by Millions of Americans
Another 119 regulated chemicals—a total of 260 contaminants altogether—were found by the environmental

group in a two-and-a-half-year analysis of more than 22 million tap water quality tests. The tests, which are required under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, were conducted at nearly 40,000 utilities that supply water to 231 million people.

    Pollution Threatens Tap Water Quality
According to a report by the EWG, the top 10 states with the most contaminants in their drinking water were California, Wisconsin, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Illinois—in that order. EWG said the biggest sources of contaminants were agriculture, industry and pollution from sprawl and urban runoff.

Utilities Need More Enforceable Standards for Tap Water
EWG's analysis also found that almost all U.S. water utilities comply fully with enforceable health standards once they are developed. The problem, according to the environmental group, is the EPA's failure to establish enforceable health standards and monitoring requirements for many tap water contaminants.

"Our analysis clearly demonstrates the need for greater protection of the nation's tap water supplies, and for increased health protections from a number of pollutants that are commonly found but currently unregulated." said Jane Houlihan, vice president for science at EWG, in a prepared statement. "Utilities routinely go beyond what is required to protect consumers from these contaminants, but they need more money for testing, and for protection of vital source waters."

  • Distilled water can be any kind of water that has been vaporized and collected, leaving behind any solid residues, including minerals. Distilled water has no minerals in it at all.
  • Reverse osmosis water has been forced through membranes that remove larger particles, pollutants and minerals. Reverse osmosis water is usually acidic2.
  • Deionized water has had ionized impurities and minerals removed from it but not bacteria or pathogens.
  • I don't know about you folks but I paid an exorbitant amount in taxes this week and I'd like to know how this is possible?  Where is the accountibility regarding providing necessities?
  • All that being said what is there to drink?

All of the above waters lack essential minerals that are necessary for good health. Mineral deficiency can lead to insulin resistance, migraines, high blood pressure, constipation and even heart beat irregularities!

Regarding purchased water...

The Dangers of Bottled Water

Bottled waters deserve some special attention because they are not always as pure as you might expect them to be.
Here are some reasons not to choose bottled water:

  1. Dangerous toxins from some plastic water bottles can leach into your water.
  2. Bottled water is often just purified municipal water and lacks essential minerals. (Brands like Dasani and Aquafina are cleaned-up city water.)
  3. Purifying, bottling and shipping water requires vast resources and uses more water than when you get your water from a pure source in the first place.

If you do you use bottled water, make sure you use reusable glass or plastic containers, and try not to consume ultra purified municipal waters in favor of naturally clean sources.

Mineral Rich H2O

The best water to drink is naturally clean, pure and full of naturally occurring minerals:

  • Well water comes from a hole drilled in the ground that taps into a water source. A pump brings it to the surface. If you do not have access to city water, then you would need a well.
  • Natural spring water flows up from a natural spring and is bottled at the source.
  • Artesian or spring waters come from a natural source but are bottled off-site and are processed and purified.
  • Mineral water could be natural spring water or artesian water, comes from an underground source, and contains at least 250 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved solids, including minerals and trace elements.

All of the types of water mentioned above have essential minerals and nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and sodium.

Minerals are important for nearly every function in your body, especially your adrenals. Mineral-rich water can be one source of these nutrients, but if you can't get these waters because of cost or your location, then home filters are an option.

Filters

Look for these types of filtration when you purchase filters or bottled water:

  • Absolute 1 micron filtration removes any particles that are larger than 1 micron in size. This filtration leaves minerals in water.
  • Ozonation is used by bottled water companies instead of chlorine to eliminate baceria. Ozonation does not change the mineral content of your water.

Remember that any filter is better than no filter, so even standard "pour through" filters like those from Brita may help clean up your water, can remove chlorine and improve the taste, but they also remove minerals.
If you are not getting enough minerals from water and your diet, then try a mineral supplement like our BioPlasma. This amazing formula is a concentrated nutritional supplement that can detox your body from harmful pollutants and give you the minerals you need to thrive.

Water is one of the most important parts of a healthy lifestyle, so make sure that you are choosing the best possible water, avoiding dangerous plastics, and getting enough vital minerals.

With 8 to 10 glasses a day of pure water, you'll have energy and vitality like never before.

Just ONE Actual Apple-A-Day ACNE  Client before and After!

Can diet and natural medicine clear your skin?  In a word, YES! The picture above is just ONE of many clients I see each week with similar results. Since I specialize in this and many other dermatologic areas I thought today I would write about Acne, Rosacea, and natural medicine.

There are many different processes that cause ACNE, Rosacea, and various skin inflammations. Here are some common causes:
Digestive
*Underlying GI problems including: bacterial or yeast infections,
*Leaky Gut
* Food Allergies
*Liver problems
Other
* Adrenal or other hormonal problems
*Blood Sugar Problems
*Stress and Anxiety
*Vitamin Deficiencies
We TEST or all the above.

It is extremely important to get to the ROOT cause of your issue to resolve it properly. Yesterday I saw a two year child whose eczema had mysteriously cleared up. THEN, the young boy lost ALL HIS HAIR. If you don't get to the root cause of an issue IT GOES DEEPER!   Schedule a consultation with me to find out what is causing your problem.  It may take time to resolve but any of my long term clients will tell you it is well worth it as their health as a whole improves radically, as well as their skin.

Many natural dermatology specialists like myself recommend whole foods for people with problem skin, I adjust diets individually for clients to meet the cause and facilitate healing. In general, the following foods have beneficial effects on skin.

Although genetics may play a factor in the appearance of your skin, your diet will improve skin dramatically.
What's the most critical nutrient for clear skin?
Acne has a reputation of attacking sugar aholic teenagers' faces. But adults suffer from acne, as well. One way to flush out toxins is to make sure you're drinking enough water. Drinking at least 8-10 cups a day — and eliminating sugary drinks, both soda and juices — may help reduce acne and skin inflammation.  Still, it will only do so much if your body is creating those toxins!

Common food allergens can also manifest as ACNE, Rosacea and other skin problems.  Scratch tests are not helpful in identifying these. We offer several panels of  affordable food allergen testing.

Foods that spike your blood sugar, may cause problems in some people.  Insulin also signals the sebaceous glands to manufacture and secrete an oily substance called sebum, which in elevated amounts causes the bacterium P. acnes to proliferate and congest hair follicles.
What else should I eat?
Eat foods that don't promote inflammation. Inflammation can manifest in many different ways from heart disease to unhealthy-looking skin. Foods like vegetable oils (especially cooked ones, which are prevalent in fried and fast  food) and refined grains are all high in Omega 6 fatty acids.

Opt instead for foods high in Omega 3's. Although it may seem counter-intuitive to some people with bad skin that fatty foods can clear skin, cold-water oily fish like salmon have anti-inflammatory properties. Does fish make you ill? No problem, there are other sources of Omega 3-rich foods including walnuts, beans and flaxseed oil.

ONE  teaspoon's worth of cold-pressed seed oils like flaxseed in a low-sugar, high-protein smoothie will reduce inflammation.

Be honest with yourself: are you eating enough vegetables? You don't have to eat plain, raw veggies but do boost your intake of fresh vegetables as they contain several compounds like antioxidants, which can help clear up skin.

For overall health and wellness, including skin quality, eat a diet that is overwhelmingly comprised of all-natural and unprocessed foods. Your skin is your largest organ. Eating lots of junk food will ultimately lead to less than optimum health — and unclear skin. There is some evidence that genetically modified foods may be inflammatory so opt out of those.
