While many folks enjoy the holidays others, (like myself ) find the holiday season extremely stressful and difficult.  This week we'll look at the seasons top stress busters compliments of Meghan Reitz and Associates in Schaumburg!

The holidays are a time when many families spend more time together than normal which is something many look forward to. But it can also bring out irritations and frustrations especially if you spend this time with relatives you normally are unable to see or even avoid the rest of the year.

HOW TO COPE: Remind yourself in the knowledge that this family togetherness will come to an end. Try to find something good in the war stories and reminscing  and try not to get pulled down into "old" stuff!

Remembering the ones we've lost

The holidays can be a big trigger when grieving the loss of a loved one. It often becomes more “real” during the holidays that your loved one is no longer physically with you. This becomes particularly true when it is the first holiday without this person.

HOW TO COPE: It's OK. We all grieve in different ways. Try to share moments of happiness or humor with your family and friends. Remember funny stories of the person or great accomplishments. Honor them in the way you know best and lean on those around you for support.

Holiday Let Down

Do you ever feel that things “should” be a certain way during the holidays? Breaking from traditions or experiencing a holiday that doesn't match up with your visions often leads to disappointment. Your high expectations for the holidays can lead to a let down when things just don't work out the way you wanted or expected.

HOW TO COPE: Grounding to the rescue again! Think about the things that you find truly important and meaningful about the holiday. These are usually easily attainable things that will help you better set your expectations. Maybe your parents are fighting or the turkey you made is too dry. At least you have your family there and something to eat. If there is no silver lining you can come up with… make one! Do a kind gesture for a neighbor you barely know or donate food or money to a charity to make sure you get your needs for a successful holiday met by helping others.

Finances

During the holidays, your wallet often takes a hit. It is an expensive time of year with all the gifts, parties, food, and travel. If finances are something you already have concerns about, the holidays can increase the pressure.

HOW TO COPE: Reduce your obligations and think outside the box for low cost, meaningful gifts. It is also okay to admit financial issues to family or friends if you are comfortable with sharing that information. The holiday season isn't about going into debt. You might be surprised by how supportive others can be if you are open and honest about it. Also, consider a “no-gift” holiday where the focus is more on the time spent together in the spirit of the holiday. Be upfront about your financial ability to travel as well. With new technologies like FaceTime, you can often connect virtually to family and friends afar, which should be the focus of the holiday either way.

Overwhelming Holiday Obligations

Everyone's schedule gets jam packed around the holidays with cookie exchanges, work functions, school performances, shopping, cooking and visiting with friends and family. It can be very overwhelming! Needing to be somewhere, remembering to do something and interacting with others can take a lot out of you both physically and emotionally. There can also be added exhaustion from the over indulgence in sweets and alcohol as well as those late nights.

HOW TO COPE: Say “No”. It's hard to say no to holiday events and requests, but by not obligating yourself to everything everyone asks of you, you will be taking the first step to self-care. When you can't say no or don't want to, then it is important to practice some mindfulness techniques to keep everything in perspective and positive. Think about the joy you're bringing to those around you as well as look forward to the feeling of success you will have when you complete these tasks. For each thing you take on, let it be the only one in your mind, keep yourself focused on that task and the good that your obligatory task is bringing you or others. When all else fails… just breathe. A few minutes of calming breathing or meditation a few times a day can push the holiday crazy away and let you focus on successfully accomplishing your Holiday activities.

With some attention, consciousness and planning alot of stressors can be managed very well freeing you to experience all the JOY of the season.

Coconut oil has previously been thought of as a “bad fat”, because  it contains saturated fatty acids. Recent studies have shown that natural sources of saturated fats are actually not only not "bad", but are beneficial, particularly for the brain. A new study, conducted at the Postgraduate Program in Cardiology at the School of Medicine, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, evaluated the health effects of extra virgin coconut oil. The study focused primarily on how coconut oil affects HDL cholesterol and a range of other measurements, such as body weight, size, and circumference.

Participants were all hypertensive-( high blood pressure), 63.2% male, with ages ranging from 54 to 70 years. 94.5% had blood lipid profiles indicating dyslipidemia and were taking standard cholesterol-lowering drugs. For the first three months, 136 participants were put on a standardized diet. For the third month and onward, the 116 who completed the first phase were placed in two intervention groups. The first group contained 22 participants who remained on the diet. The remaining 92 were put on the diet and given an additional 13 ml of extra virgin coconut oil daily (equivalent to approximately one tablespoon). The results at the end of the three months showed that the group of participants taking coconut oil saw a decrease in all six of the bodily parameters measured, including weight (reduction of .6 kilograms), body mass (reduction of .2 kg), waist circumference (reduction of 2.1 cm), neck perimeter (reduction of 4cm), systolic blood pressure (reduction of 3.3 points), and diastolic blood pressure (reduction of 3.5 points).

Participants also saw a 3.1 to 7.4 mg increase in HDL cholesterol. The researchers concluded that “nonpharmoacological interventions are essential for risk factor control in secondary prevention among patients with coronary disease. Our study showed that a diet rich in extra virgin coconut oil seems to favor the reduction of WC and the increase of HDL-C concentrations, raising with secondary prevention for CAD patients.”Coconut oil has previously been thought of as a “bad fat”, as it contains saturated fatty acids. Can an attitude of gratitude brings major health benefits?

An attitude of gratitude can foster major health benefits according to recent psychological research from Northeastern University and University of California, Riverside.  By focusing on positivity, researchers have discovered that participants experience better sleep, better moods overall with significantly less anxiety and depression, greater happiness and long term life satisfaction, and kinder behavior towards others even family members!

These studies have also shown that feeling grateful results in less aggressive behavior towards others even when provoked and a “Pay it Forward” towards others which has far reaching positive ripple effects.

I would sum all the research up as major stress reduction!  Decreased anger, stress, hostility, lowered cortisol levels translates into better health, and less “angry liver syndrome” which can be so prevalent at the holidays.

How to turn on the gratitude in your life?  A few simple habits  help!   Each day start and end the day with 5 things you are grateful for.  When around strangers, difficult clients or family members make a point of noticing and commenting upon something  good or positive about them.

Frequently, perform random acts of kindness. Self esteem rises when people feel good about themselves and their behavior.  The only real joy in life comes from being kind.

What if you are just not feeling it?? Read Dale Carnegie's: How to Win friends and Influence People, or watch It's a Wonderful Life.  Either should help get you in the REAL spirit.

Emerging evidence suggests a link between the gut microflora and metabolic factors in obesity.  As such, there is increasing interest in food-based approaches to favorably alter the bacteria composition of the GI tract to modulate specific metabolic pathways. Seoul National University (Korea) researchers studied kimchi – a mixture of cabbage and other vegetables with chili peppers the fermented version not only has concentrated flavor, but improved digestibility, as it is a good source of lactobacilli, a “friendly” GI bacteria.

The team enrolled 24 obese women, to consume either fresh or fermented kimchi for 8 weeks. Fermented kimchi altered gene expression linked to metabolism, immunity, blood circulation, digestion, and blood pressure. As well, the investigators found that fermented kimchi raised the numbers of Bacteriodes and Prevotella, while lowering Blautia, in the gut; these changes appeared to correspond to metabolic pathway changes associated with weight/obesity.

Observing that: “fresh and fermented kimchi intervention exerted differential effects on the obesity-related clinical parameters,” the study authors write that: “ Correlations of these effects with changes in blood gene expression and gut microbial population were more evident in the fermented kimchi group than the fresh kimchi group.”

I will not extrapolate to determine whether this would help obesity but it is well established that peppers and other hot spicy foods raise the metabolic rate at which food is burned as fuel.  Due to other problems inherent in doing this long term such as damaging the epithelial tissue of the gut, I would not recommend as a sole dietary intervention but it may help someone kick off a weight loss program if balanced properly.

Kyungsun Han, Shambhunath Bose, Jing-hua Wang, Bong-Soo Kim, Mi Jeong Kim, Eun-Jung Kim, Hojun Kim.  “Contrasting effects of fresh and fermented kimchi consumption on gut microbiota composition and gene expression related to metabolic syndrome in obese Korean women.”  Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 23 March 2015.

Skin rejuvenation via natural means is many thousands of years old.

Now modern research validates a lot of ancient wisdom and some new ingredients have made it to the shelves.  Which are most effective?

I have specialized in skin disorders since healing my own skin many years ago from some serious disorders.

I have also very recently begun a natural skin corrective brand which I am not actively marketing yet.  Still those rare clients who have tried them have been effusive in their praise of the results achieved.  I agree, you will not find better skin products anywhere.  They are truly skin changing in no time.  Today, I will discuss top ingredients to look for in anti aging products.

Retinol: This vitamin A derivative corrects lines, wrinkles, sunspots, sagging, crepiness, and more!
No wonder most skin experts agree retinols are the number one ingredient to look for.  By speeding up skin cell turnover while also boosting circulation to the skin.  Many products contain retinol.  My product NourishUP! contains the highest allowable concentration of retinol in a formula that contains also vitamins C and E which work synergistically with retinol and also marine extracts and peptides. More about those a bit later. Most retinol products should be used twice daily followed by a good moisturizer like PlumpUP! or BuildUP!

Vitamin C: derived from fruits, vitamin C reduces signs of photoaging by neutralizing free radicals. It also evens skin tone, and removes hyperpigmentation even sunspots in some people. A 20% solution like BrightenUP! or my serum is necessary to get these benefits. If using this it is also necessary to protect your skin with daily sunscreen which is a great idea anyway.  I like Climb On.
Kojic Acid: This natural acid derived from fungi, kojic acid has benefits like skin lightening safely without the side effects of hydroquinone.  It also has antioxidant properties and antibacterial properties making it beneficial for some people with acne. My Product LightenUP! Contains the highest allowable levels of kojic acid along with other

AHA/BHA: AHA's are derived from milk or fruit which BHA is derived only from salicylate.  AHA are exfoliators removing the surface cells of the skin which are helpful to dry skin, and can diminish the appearance of wrinkles.  BHA's are helpful for wrinkles also and especially unblock pores and clear up acne.  My ClearUP! Acne cleansing gel contains BOTH!  It has been wonderful for my clients with chronic acne.  It helps by reducing breakouts and then also resurfacing damaged dry skin, revealing new skin!

PEPTIDES: are strings of amino acids that penetrate deep into skin to address common aging concerns.  They are popular because they stimulate production of collagen hyalauronic acid and elastin.  These are natural components of skin that when depleted cause wrinkles and sagging.  Many of my products contain peptides of all kinds.  LineUP! helps repair and prevent expression lines while NourishUP! and BuildUP! contain peptides to accelerate skin repair!

I have small quantities of samples available so feel free to stop in for one, while supplies last.

Flabby muscles and lack of muscle tone are to most signs of lack of exercise or aging or low hormones or even all the above but new research may indicate something else going on.  Could this common situation be due to an actual vitamin deficiency?  Researchers at the University of London set out to learn this very thing!  Their results were startling!

Vitamin D is most widely recognized to exert bone and immune effects.   PB Tomlinson, from the University of London (United Kingdom), and colleagues completed a meta analysis of published studies of vitamin D and muscle strength in healthy adults (ages 18 to 40 years), covering a total of 310 subjects.  Selected trials lasted from 4 weeks to 6 months and dosages differed from 4000IU per day to 60,000IU per week. Upper and lower limb muscle strength both showed a  standardized mean difference of 0.32, for which h the investigators “[suggest] vitamin D supplementation significantly increased muscle strength.”

It is a pretty simple thing to be tested for vitamin D, a blood test.  My favorite vitamin D supplement is a liquid form that is available right here!

It would be interesting to see if these findings would be applicable to older people.

New research indicates that regular use of this common over the counter type of medication can adversely affect a women's ability to conceive. According to Dr. David Silver a board certified Rheumatologist, "The mechanism of these affects inflammatory pathways that also play a critical role in the ovulation cycle and other stages of the reproduction."

As published in the the Journal of Rheumatology women who had been pregnant in the past as well as women who had never attempted to conceive were unable to become pregnant while regularly taking NSAIDs for arthritis related pain. After thorough investigation for alternate explanations, the women were asked to discontinue the use of their NSAID pain medication. In each of the case studies, women were able to conceive once they had discontinued the use of their NSAID pain medication

Objective. To highlight the possible association between infertility and treatment with long‐term non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drug (NSAIDs). NSAIDs act mainly through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase, the enzyme that catalyses the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are essential mediators of ovulation, implantation and placentation of the conceptus.

Methods. Case reports of four women suffering from severe arthritis, on long‐term NSAIDs and undergoing extensive investigation and treatment for infertility.

Results. During the last 2 yr, four out of five women with severe arthritis and difficulty conceiving were counselled to stop NSAIDs, and they successfully conceived shortly after the withdrawal of NSAIDs.

Conclusion. NSAIDs, used largely for the treatment of rheumatological conditions, may be responsible for some cases of infertility.

Discussion

Recently, a small number of cases of infertility associated with the chronic use of NSAIDs have been reported in the literature [24]. We present here four further cases of women seen in our lupus pregnancy clinic during the last 2 yr with histories of primary or secondary infertility. They had in common severe inflammatory joint disease and chronic use of diclofenac. Two had been submitted to extensive investigation for infertility, and discontinuation of the NSAID was followed by successful conception after 2–6 months. Conception was spontaneous in three cases and followed one cycle of IVF in the fourth case.

Patients with rheumatological complaints and  conditions and unexplained infertility should be asked about the use of NSAIDs before being subjected to extensive investigation or IVF. Reproductive failure due to NSAIDs is rarely reported, but its true frequency may be underestimated.  We have excellent NATURAL  solutions for pain...Curcumax.

GOUT is a type of arthritis, characterized by acute attacks of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint.  This condition is caused by an excess type of arthritis, gout is often characterized by acute attacks of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint.  The condition is caused by an excess of uric acid on the blood, leading to the formation of hard crystals in joints. Tanya Flynn, from the University of Otago (New Zealand), and colleagues analyzed data collected on 2150 New Zealand residents with clinically confirmed gout. Participants were surveyed for their food habits, with 71% reporting that they had one or more to gout food triggers. The researchers then analyzed data collected on 12,722 objects participating in the Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) Study, Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), and Framingham Heart Study (FHS).  Data analysis revealed that tomato consumption linked to higher levels of uric acid in the blood.  Writing that:  “the positive association between tomato consumption and serum urate levels suggests that the self-reporting of tomatoes as a dietary trigger by people with gout has a biological basis,” the study authors submit that tomatoes may be the fourth most common gout trigger food, after seafood, alcohol, and red meat.A type of arthritis, gout is often characterized by acute attacks of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint.  The condition is caused by an excess of uric acid on the blood, leading to the formation of hard crystals in joints. One way  to quickly relieve an attack of gouty arthritis is to alkanize the blood.  A quick and tasty way to do this is right here!  I have also had major success with acupuncture in boosting the kidney to relieve this condition.

As a Naturopathic doctor, ND,  who specializes in digestive/GI disorders I first became interested in black cumin oil due to its long heritage as a way to quickly reduce inflammation in the gut for many of my clients.  That was just the tip of the iceberg of its many benefits.  According to Dr. Gary Null and NaturalNews:

"Black cumin oil is probably the single most important oil you can put in your system. Every time you take black cumin you are stimulating your immune system to fight on your behalf and increase natural killer cells." Null was referring to its ability to improve the immune system, treat cancer and HIV successfully.

Black cumin is also known as Nigella sativa, black seeds and kalonji and has been healing  various maladies of the body for more than 2,000 years.

Although black cumin has been used for centuries, only during the last 40 years has the true potential of this remedy been realized. Originally, black cumin was used mainly for migraines, asthma and allergies.
Now  it is shown to be successful in stimulating the immune system, against  major insults to the immune system such as: HIV and healing cancerous  tumors.

Black cumin is a a treatment for immunity

When you look at the broad term "immunity," auto-immune diseases should also be included. These little black seeds have shown to improve the immune system by 72 percent in as few as four weeks. Two studies were done in 1987 at the I.I.M.E.R. in Panama City, Florida to verify the immune building effects of black cumin. The volunteer groups were given one gram of black cumin twice a day or a placebo. After four weeks, the end results showed a 72 percent increase in T-cell ratios and cell functional activity in most participants.

Black cumin is now a viable option to treat and/or heal people afflicted with auto-immune diseases which are a leading cause of death and disability for many. In 2010, there were approximately 23.5 million Americans afflicted with auto-immune diseases which include more than 80 serious diseases. Some of the types are rare and some quite common like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Celiac disease and Crohn's disease.

Still, black cumin heals more than just auto-immune diseases such as cancer, diabetes, baldness, asthma and migraines. It eliminates parasites and even helps with menstrual blood flow.

Black cumin annihilates pancreatic cancer tumors

Dr. Hwyda Arafat at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson conducted several studies using Nigella sativa (black cumin) to treat pancreatic cancer. The results were astounding with an 80 percent cancer tumor cell death. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in America with an overall 4.6 percent survival rate over a five-year period. Dr. Arafat went on to say, "Nigella sativa helps treat a broad array of diseases, including some immune and inflammatory disorders. Previous studies also have shown anticancer activity in prostate and colon cancers, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects."

How to take black cumin and dosage requirements

It is imperative to purchase organic, cold pressed oil that is free of additives. I offer a wonderful one right here.  FREE shipping!

To benefit the immune system:

take one teaspoon daily mixed with raw honey or fresh juice one hour before breakfast. For immune illness take three teaspoons daily in divided doses combined with a healthy  diet and exercise program. Both immune problems and cancer were treated historically with the addition of fresh garlic. Black cumin can be taken daily as a preventative  for all diseases including heart disease.

In this era of all things Paleo pertaining to diet and nutrition the fact that there are several real accounts of cancer victims healing themselves with a diet alone is not well known, even among alternative practioners.

George Oshawa first introduced the diet in the 1960's. The diet was all about balance according to asian philosophy. Balance of many factors as you will see.

The balance is attributed to  the Chinese properties of yin and yang. Balance in these areas are essential to health.  All foods are categorized as yin, yang, or neutral or balanced. In the 1960s, it was not uncommon to go on an all brown rice diet with the prescribed fermented soy sauce for a week or two in order to break through a spell of very bad health, or just as a cleansing fast.  Of course, some people took it too far and perished and consequently this diet received a lot of bad press.

But there is much more to macrobiotics than just brown rice, although it is a staple. The diet focuses mostly on grains and legumes with some vegetables and sea veggies (seaweeds), very little fruit, and no animal meat, although some macrobiotic dieters allow for a little fish. A diet heavy with grains cuts across the current thinking of some highly regarded alternative health practitioners and writers who believe grains create inflammation. However, the macrobiotic diet has a long history of health giving success with its focus on whole organic grains.

Some raw food is considered okay, but light cooking, usually steaming or stir frying, is the preferred method of preparing macrobiotic foods. Although there are a few dissidents within macrobiotic circles, the macrobiotic diet mostly shuns  ALL supplements, remember though this is back when the soil may have had some nourishment and foods were still unmodified.

After its introductory impact in the USA, public interest in macrobiotics waned. The notion of curing serious disease by diet alone was not appreciated, and as a method of getting healthier and staying healthy, it was considered too strict and severe by most.

One facet of macrobiotics that should be applied to all eating is chewing longer. It helps  food digest better and let's you become more aware of when you`ve had enough to eat.  ALSO, Something  HUGE that was completely lost on our culture is that this diet was changed  FREQUENTLY for the individual by their practitioner depending upon their current presentation IE, too yin, too yang, too hot too cold, or based on imbalances in their organs, weakness in the kidney or heart or blood or spleen or liver for example, seasonally and for other imbalances too numerous to list here.

Macrobiotics Today

Macrobiotics has remained over recent decades through the efforts of Michio and Gabriel Kushi`s books and their involvement with establishing training centers for macrobiotic principles, food selection, and cooking. Many of those who have adopted the macrobiotic diet as a life style did so after being stricken with life threatening diseases such as cancer or debilitating chronic issues such as Type 2 diabetes, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia.

They were magically led to macrobiotics, tried the diet strictly, and recovered quickly and painlessly.

I think the really valuable takeaway here is the concept of individualization and balance.  Health is a continuum and what works for a time needs to be CHANGED at regular intervals.  Very few people can do this for themselves.  It really requires someone very knowledgeable who can teach you how to ultimately read your own body and make those changes yourself.
