As flaws go, the detriments of being a type A person are very well established in the medical literature but did anyone ever research the opposite end of the spectrum.   Well today, we will discuss the health benefits of being a patient person.  Something  I never have been.

Being patient means being able to wait calmly in the face of frustration or adversity.

All religions and many philosophers have long praised the virtue of patience; now researchers are starting to do so as well. Recent studies have found that, sure enough, good things really do come to those who (can) wait. Some of these science-backed benefits are detailed below, along with waysto cultivate more patience in yourself.

Patient people enjoy better mental health

This finding is probably easy to believe if you call to mind the stereotypical impatient person: face ready to implode. And sure enough, according to a 2007 study by Fuller Theological Seminary professor Sarah A. Schnitker and UC Davis psychology professor Robert Emmons, patient people tend to experience less depression and negative emotions, perhaps because they can cope better with upsetting or stressful situations. They also rate themselves as more mindful and feel more gratitude, more connection to mankind and to the universe, and a greater sense of abundance.

Finally, patience over daily hassles—traffic jams, long lines at the grocery store, a malfunctioning computer—seems to go along with good mental health. In particular, people who have this type of patience are more satisfied with life and less depressed.

These studies are good news for people who are already patient, but what about those of us who need to become more patient? In her 2012 study, Schnitker invited 71 undergraduates to participate in two weeks of patience training, where they learned to identify feelings and their triggers, regulate their emotions, empathize with others, and meditate. In two weeks, participants reported feeling more patient toward the trying people in their lives, feeling less depressed, and experiencing higher levels of positive emotions. In other words, patience seems to be a skill you can learn and doing so might bring benefits to your mental health.

Patient people are kinder people

As a result of 10 months of meditation, one day recently I realized that my Type A qualities were inherently unkind, even to myself…

d to be more cooperative, more empathic, more equitable, and more forgiving. “Patience involves emphatically assuming some personal discomfort to alleviate the suffering of those around us,” write Debra R. Comer and Leslie E. Sekerka in their 2014 study.

Evidence of this is found in a 2008 study that put participants into groups of four and asked them to contribute money to a common pot, which would be doubled and redistributed. The game gave players a financial incentive to be stingy, yet patient people contributed more to the pot than other players did.

In Schnitker's 2012 study they summarized… “Patience may enable individuals to tolerate flaws in others, therefore displaying more generosity, compassion, mercy, and forgiveness,” write Schnitker and Emmons in their 2007 study.

On a group level, patience may be one of the foundations of civil society. Patient people are more likely to vote, an activity that entails waiting months or years for our elected official to implement better policies. Evolutionary theorists believe that patience helped our ancestors survive because it allowed them to do good deeds and wait for others to reciprocate, instead of demanding immediate compensation (which would more likely lead to conflict than cooperation). In that same vein, patience is linked to trust in the people and the institutions around us.

Patience helps us achieve success

The road to achievement is a long one, and those without patience—who want to see results immediately—may not be willing to work at it. Many people think they are “above” starting at bottom and working up. Presumably because they do not have the patience to wait it out.

In her 2012 study, Schnitker also examined whether patience helps students get things done. In five surveys they completed over the course of a semester, patient people of all stripes reported exerting more effort toward their goals than other people did. Those with interpersonal patience in particular made more progress toward their goals and were more satisfied when they achieved them (particularly if those goals were difficult) compared with less patient people. According to Schnitker's analysis, that greater satisfaction with achieving their goals explained why these patient achievers were more content with their lives as a whole.

Patience is linked to good health

The study of patience is still new, but there's some emerging evidence that it might even be good for our health. In their 2007 study, Schnitker and Emmons found that patient people were less likely to report health problems like headaches, acne flair-ups, and digestive disorders such as: ulcers, diarrhea, and IBS also in low immunity and pneumonia. Other research has found that people who exhibit impatience and irritability—a characteristic of the Type A personality—tend to have more health complaints and worse sleep. If patience can reduce our daily stress, it's reasonable to speculate that it could also protect us against stress's damaging health effects. I have seen this in myself and many of my clients.

How to cultivate patience:

Practicing Mindful meditation or loving kindness meditation will lead to increased patience over time but it is a process and a commitment.

Daily Yoga Practice is also a way to get more in touch with yourself and the present moment and learn patience.

Lastly, practicing gratitude will lead to a more kind and patient perspective.

Should you wish to learn more, schedule an appointment.  I'd love to assist you with this.

One of the many causes of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease appears to occur from lack of proper stomach acid production. I know that is opposite everything you have ever heard from mainstream medicine. Most people are told that they have too much stomach acid, which causes GERD. You see advertisements all the time on television for acid reducing medication like proton pump inhibitors.

The primary cause of GERD is not increased stomach acid but instead is from elevated gastric pressure. For GERD to occur, the LES has to be weakened, increased gastric pressure has to forces stomach acid and pepsin into the esophagus, and uncontrolled excessive inflammation to occurs.  Generally, throughout the day people can reflux occasionally, from esophageal pressure changes, swallowing, and consumption of food. However,  most people can easily handle these types of  reflux episodes and inflammation. For others, they cannot, and they develop reflux conditions like GERD.

How Does Low Stomach Acid Production Cause GERD?

Lowered stomach acid production facilitates overgrowth of pathogens and protein fermentation and malabsorption, which increase gastric pressure and stomach distension. The increase in gastric pressure and stomach pressure eventually weakens the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter) and causes GERD.  Stomach acid is produced by our stomach to help limit pathogen overgrowth, digest protein, activate digestive enzymes, signal an increase in mucin production in the stomach, and increase absorption of B12 later in the gastrointestinal tract (intrinsic factor). So without proper stomach acid production, what happens to our digestion?

Eventually,  microorganism overgrowth occurs and leads to further digestive issues. Protein that is maldigested influences the microbiome, leading to overgrowth producing excessive amounts of hydrogen gas, causing distension, esophageal pressure changes, and LES weakness. Protein is broken down ineffectively from lack of stomach acid, causing excessive protein fermentation from overgrowth leading to increased hydrogen gas production and distension. Upper gut bacteria are also able to use glucose from our food as a source of fuel and increase hydrogen production leading to stomach distension. A hiatal hernia may eventually develop from worsening stomach distension increased further pressure on the LES and esophagus. The increased pressure would further weaken the LES and worsen GERD.

Overgrowth of bacteria in the stomach and esophagus may lead to reduced probiotic Akkermansia muciniphila colonization, in the upper gut, which combined with reduced stomach acid production results in a reduction of mucosal barrier health in the stomach and esophagus. Increased endotoxin production from gram-negative overgrowth can increase inflammation in the stomach, causing gastritis, and increase inflammation in the esophagus, causing the symptoms of GERD. The esophagus is also able to produced limited quantities of bicarbonate (using carbonic anhydrase) to protect itself from reflux, its capacity is reduced if repeated reflux events are occurring. The worsening combination of increased inflammation (endogenous cytokines and chemical injury) from constant refluxing (due to increased gastric pressure) into the esophagus, reduction of mucosal integrity, and endotoxin inflammation causes the symptoms of GERD from excessive esophageal inflammation.

A simple test to determine whether you have too little stomach acid is to take a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in one ounce of water…a shot glass to see if your symptoms improve.

If they do, it is a good bet that you have too little stomach acid. At that point, come in to see us or schedule a consultation as this is not something you should attempt to treat on your own,

dulse-2sybaritica

This Just in...

Newport Oregon,

Oregon State researchers recently patented a new strain of seaweed that grows unbelievably fast, is full of protein and nutrients and has an unusual characteristic when cooked.

Dulse, grows along the coastlines in the wild and is harvested and is sold for up to $90 a pound.  Now, researcher Chris Langdon and his staff, have created a new form of dulse which contains numerous vitamins, minerals and antioxidants as well as 16% protein.

It looks like translucent red lettuce and has an unusual characteristic when cooked....It tastes just like bacon. It has to be fried but the researchers claim it has a strong bacon like flavor.

I am thrilled since I love but do not eat bacon!  The researchers are hopeful that the vegan market will place this product in high demand.

As far as it's superfood status, it is a superfood with twice the nutritional value of kale, according to the researchers.

It is also sustainable, as this can be quickly farmed using a water recirculation system.  According to the researchers, growing is easy. It requires only a modest amount of seawater and sunlight.

Next week discover how raising your stomach acid levels can improve your digestion.

Here are some inexplicable medical  mysteries you will NOT believe!  Some of these stories prove there is much more to the human body than we know. Medical  Daily once yearly publishes a list of medical mysteries.  Here are some of their top stories so curl up with them on this dark, rainy night shortly  before Halloween. Cheers!

The strange case of a woman with a missing cerebellum:

Back in 2014, it was  normal procedure for doctors to perform a CAT scan on a 24 year old woman in China after she was admitted to the hospital complaining of dizziness and nausea.  In her history, she reported to her doctors  that she had been unable to speak intelligibly until age 6 and unable to stand until age 4. She had suffered lifelong balance issues.

Despite these few issues, the woman married and had a daughter.  She functioned completely normally for years.  Imagine the doctors  surprise when her CAT scan revealed she was missing her entire

The boy who lost his appetite:

A 12 year old boy suddenly woke up without an appetite or thirst.  Now, his parents have to force feed him to keep him alive.  Since this occurred in 2013, he has lost 40#s. Though his sense  of smell and taste are normal, no sensations stimulate any appetite or desire to eat or drink anything.

No medical cause has ever been found.

The Case of the Woman with no pulse:

A  40 year old mother in Fla who underwent a routine cesarean lost her pulse for a full 45 minutes.

This occurred because fluid from the amniotic sac entered her bloodstream and created a vacuum in her heart completely stopping her heart and lung function. After she was revived, the lack of blood flow to her brain had caused no neurological damage.

After waking up from a weeklong coma after a car crash, an Australian man lost some of his English speaking abilities but is now able to speak fluent Mandarin.  This was discovered in the hospital where he recovered after he engaged with a Mandarin speaking nurse.

The  case of the strange epidemic:

200 young girls in Columbia entered the nearest hospital complaining of nausea, abdominal  pain and numbness in their hands.  Researchers were baffled by the synchronicity of this event and it was chalked up to mass hysteria  when it was learned that the village had been introduced to the HPV vaccination.

Happy Halloween!

It's relatively simple to get more energy.  The ideas illustrated here involve protecting your natural energy not using stimulants or even supplements as a crutch.

It's so important to take care of your body.  By attending to these suggestions you will find a steady release in your body's energy over time.

First, Improve your sleep:

How to improve your sleep quality:

Avoid stimulating technology  at least 2 hours before bed
Use calming music or a guided meditation. Keep a notepad beside your bed to quickly record any "to do"things that may keep you awake.

Early Morning.
How do you spend the first hour of the day? This crucial time sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Get some positive energy in the  morning.

Start with a simple list of  things you are grateful for.

Get moving with exercise or yoga.  It stimulates endorphins, enhances cognitive performance, and kicks off your day with a feeling of already having accomplished something.

Recite positive affirmations.

Create an achievable (short) list of your goals for the day.
Do something for others.

Eating:

Most bodies require healthy nutrition every 3-4 hours. Our food choices impact our energy, directing it either positively or negatively. One important nutrition strategy is to stabilize blood sugar so that we don't crash and burn.

How to practice smart nutrition:

Eat  smaller meals every 3-4 hours.
Take time to enjoy your food.
Eat within an hour of waking to stimulate metabolism.
Eat a combination of healthy carbs, lean protein, and healthy fats.
Avoid all processed foods.
Drink a lot of water before or after meals

Exercise
The human body craves movement. Too often we go for extended periods of sitting, which compromises our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

How to incorporate exercise:

Incorporate stretching and walking into your day, even if it is for 10-15 minutes.
Put some movement breaks into your schedule, rather than booking yourself constantly.
Create activity meetings.
Track your fitness and movement using one of the many apps available. Engage a partner for accountability.

Recharge:

It's essential to schedule in daily recharge time. If you are not intentional about it, your brain and body will tell you when you need to do it.

How:

Learn deep breathing.
Practice gratitude.
Journal.
Perform arts or music
Laugh
Use music therapy and aromatherapy. Specific music and scents stimulate our limbic system.
Laugh. Humor is one of the most neurologically important reset techniques we can apply.

Your energy is your most valuable resource. Take the time and effort your body needs to perform at a high level.

Best of luck!

A major conclusion of this little known cancer cause is based on a decade's worth of research undertaken by the World Cancer Research Fund, The International Agency for Research on Cancer, the World Health Organization, and other major respected health research groups.  The take home message to all is that cancers are preventable.

While not as established, another 3 types of cancer are also associated.  These are skin, prostate, and pancreatic cancer.

While alcohol has long been recognized as a carcinogen, new research has now demonstrated that 7 distinct types of cancer have been linked to even moderate drinking.

These include:

Breast

Mouth

Throat

Larnyx

Esophagus

Colon

Bowel

Liver

Although alcohol is not the sole cause of these cancers, alcohol is a leading one. The study's author noted that alcohol related deaths constitute up to 6% of cancer deaths worldwide.

Study author, Jennie Connor and as reported in the Guardian noted that: "the highest risks are associated with the heaviest drinking but a considerable burden is experienced with low to moderate consumption, due to the distribution of drinking in the population".

Unknown to most, when it comes to consuming alcohol, there is no "safe limit".

Study authors went on to conclude that simply by not smoking, rarely drinking and leading an active lifestyle would prevent 70% of cancer deaths.

Seasonal allergy season is here once again.  While most of my clients/patients struggle with seasonal allergies I RARELY treat them as a primary problem. Thing is, they clear up when dealing with the person's overall health status. Countless clients have arrived at my clinic complaining of sinus problems, allergies and gut issues.  When we have fixed the gut issues, their seasonal allergies also disappeared.  We learn in naturopathic training that if "something is wrong with the gut fix that first because everything else will improve", I have found these words very true.

Conventional medicine treats allergies with injections and pills which does not address the core trouble.  The core trouble for many is an inflammed gut due to underlying infestations of bacteria, fungus, yeast or all three, severe food allergy, like Celiac disorder, leaky gut, environmental allergies, and severe stress.  Delving into and establishing the primary cause is necessary for full resolution of symptoms.

Anything that impacts the immune system will trigger allergies or help them calm down.  Dietary changes towards a low inflammation diet is necessary. A whole foods, antioxidant rich diet low in sugars is a good first step. Healthy fats like avocado and fatty fish are also helpful for allergies.

Gut healing nutrients should only be used if you are working with someone like myself who specializes in these disorders.  If you start supplementing yourself you will not only waste time and money but in many cases make the undiagnosed underlying disorder harder to treat.

Stress is a great trigger for allergies by depleting your immune system and damaging your gut.  If you are too stressed out consider Yoga or other mind body techniques to assist you in managing it.  Exercise is also a great aid to stress reduction.

Get enough sleep as sleep deficits damage the gut and increase inflammation.  A simple blood test called a C-reactive protein test can measure the degree of inflammation in your body and potential for chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.

Taking care of your body is an investment that will pay dividends for a lifetime.  Investing in a proper diagnosis and treatment will also pay dividends for the rest of your life.

For very mild symptoms, a natural antihistamine can be helpful for a week or two.  One I recommend is FREE Shipping on all orders!

chronic-fatigue-syndrome

image:sheknows.com

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFS, has baffled doctors and researchers for decades. Characterized by extreme fatigue, sleep abnormalities, pain and other symptoms all made worse upon exertion. Search for a cause has been frustrating and unrevealing and  includes viral exposure, brain inflammation and search for other underlying medical disorders.

Now, for the first time, Cornell University researchers report they have identified biological markers of the disease in gut bacteria and inflammatory microbial agents in the blood.

In a study published June 23 in the journal Microbiome, the team describes how they correctly diagnosed myalgic encephalomyeletis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) in 83 percent of patients through stool samples and blood work, offering a noninvasive diagnosis and a step toward  a NEW understanding the cause of the disease.

"Our work demonstrates that the gut bacterial microbiome in chronic fatigue syndrome patients isn't normal, perhaps leading to gastrointestinal and inflammatory symptoms in victims of the disease," said Maureen Hanson, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell and the paper's senior author. "Furthermore, our detection of a biological abnormality provides further evidence against the ridiculous concept that the disease is psychological in origin."

"In the future, we could see this technique as a complement to other noninvasive diagnoses, but if we have a better idea of what is going on with these gut microbes and patients, maybe clinicians could consider changing diets, using prebiotics such as dietary fibers or probiotics to help treat the disease," said Ludovic Giloteaux, a postdoctoral researcher and first author of the study.

In the study, Ithaca campus researchers collaborated with Dr. Susan Levine, an ME/CFS specialist in New York City, who recruited 48 people diagnosed with ME/CFS and 39 healthy controls to provide stool and blood samples.

The researchers sequenced regions of microbial DNA from the stool samples to identify different types of bacteria. Overall, the diversity of types of bacteria was greatly reduced and there were fewer bacterial species known to be anti-inflammatory in ME/CFS patients compared with healthy people, an observation also seen in people with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

At the same time, the researchers discovered specific markers of inflammation in the blood, likely due to a leaky gut from intestinal problems that allow bacteria to enter the blood, Giloteaux said.

Bacteria in the blood will trigger an immune response, which could worsen symptoms.

The researchers have no evidence to distinguish whether the altered gut microbiome is a cause or a whether it is a consequence of disease, Giloteaux added.

In the future, the research team will look for evidence of viruses and fungi in the gut, to see whether one of these or an association of these along with bacteria may be causing or contributing to the illness.

Certainly this is great news for the 1,000,000 CFS sufferers.  It is also one more important reason to get your house in order...gut wise.

A recent study may explain why people who do not have Celiac disease or wheat allergy nevertheless experience a variety of gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms after ingesting wheat and related grain cereals. The findings suggest that these individuals have a weakened intestinal barrier, AKA, leaky gut,  which leads to a body-wide inflammatory immune response.

Conclusions from this study, which was led by researchers from Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), were reported in the journal Gut.

"Our study shows that the symptoms reported by individuals with this condition are not imagined, as some people have suggested," said study co-author Peter H. Green, MD, the Phyllis and Ivan Seidenberg Professor of Medicine at CUMC and director of the Celiac Disease Center. "It demonstrates that there is a biological basis for these symptoms in a significant number of these patients."

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the small intestine after someone who is genetically positive to the disorder ingests gluten from wheat, rye, or barley. This leads to a range of gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloating.

Researchers have struggled to determine why some people, who lack the characteristic blood, tissue, or genes have Celiac-like GI symptoms, as well as certain extra-intestinal symptoms, such as fatigue, cognitive difficulties, or mood disturbance, after ingesting foods that contain wheat, rye, or barley. One explanation for this condition, known as non-celiac gluten or wheat sensitivity (NCWS), is that exposure to the offending grains somehow triggers acute systemic immune activation, rather than a strictly localized intestinal immune response. Because there are no biomarkers for NCWS, accurate figures for its prevalence are not available, but it is estimated to affect about 1 percent of the population, or 3 million Americans, roughly the same prevalence as celiac disease.

The CUMC team examined 80 individuals with NCWS, 40 individuals with celiac disease, and 40 healthy controls. Despite the extensive intestinal damage associated with Celiac disease, blood markers of innate systemic immune activation were not elevated in the Celiac disease group. This suggests that the intestinal immune response in Celiac patients is able to neutralize microbes or microbial components that may pass through the damaged intestinal barrier, thereby preventing a systemic inflammatory response against highly immunostimulatory molecules.

The NCWS group was markedly different. They did not have the intestinal cytotoxic T cells seen in celiac patients, but they did have a marker of intestinal cellular damage that correlated with serologic markers of acute systemic immune activation. This therefore suggests that the identified systemic immune activation in NCWS is linked to increased translocation of microbial and dietary components from the gut into systemic circulation, in part due to intestinal cell damage and weakening of the intestinal barrier.

"A systemic immune activation model would be consistent with the generally rapid onset of the reported symptoms in people with non-celiac wheat sensitivity," said study leader Armin Alaedini, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at CUMC who also holds an appointment in Columbia's Institute of Human Nutrition and is a member of the Celiac Disease Center.

NCWS patients who followed a diet that excluded wheat and related cereals for six months were able to normalize their levels of immune activation and intestinal cell damage markers, the researchers also found. These changes were associated with significant improvement in both intestinal and non-intestinal symptoms, as reported by the patients in detailed symptom questionnaires.

Dr. Alaedini, says "The data suggests that, in the future, we may be able to use a combination of biomarkers to identify patients with non-celiac wheat sensitivity, and to monitor their response to treatment.

This confirms what naturopathic doctors have said for decades...that the microbiome your own gut bacteriology is responsible for creating a condition of chronic inflammation in the gut which wears away the lining creating leaky gut.  In my clinical experience in treating this phenomenon, I have learned that grains are the first foods people become sensitive to.  Eventually it becomes more and more generalized until finally, they seek the help they need.

This Just In!

Hair loss is a distressing condition that is associated with a multitude of natural, medical, or nutritional conditions. For example, androgenetic alopecia in men, or male pattern baldness, is increasingly recognized as a physically and psychologically serious medical condition that often requires a professional care by generalist clinicians.

The only products sanctioned by the US FDA for hair loss treatment are oral finasteride (Proscar®) and topical minoxidil (Rogaine®). Minoxidil was originally created as a hypertension medication by Upjohn Pharmaceuticals . Upjohn itself has warned of possible negative side effects from the medication including increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, rapid weight gain, edema, seborrheic dermatitis, scalp itching, and scaling .

Traditional plant remedies have been used for centuries in the treatment for hair loss, but only a few have been scientifically evaluatedPeppermint (Mentha piperita) extracted from peppermint leaves is generally regarded as an excellent carminative and gastric stimulant, and also has been used in cosmetic formulations as a fragrance component and a general skin conditioning agent. The principal ingredient of peppermint oil, menthol, is primarily responsible for its beneficial effects .In vitro, peppermint has been reported to show anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal activities as well as strong antioxidant activity, and antiallergenic and antitumor actions . Several clinical trials examining the effects of peppermint oil (PEO) on irritable bowel syndrome have been reported . However, experimental trial of PEO in its hair growth activity has not been fully reported. The aim of this study was to address the therapeutic potential of PEO for hair loss via the comparative analysis between PEO and minoxidil.

The drugs for alopecia treatment have been developed to maintain or induce the anagen stage of hair cycle. ALP activity was particularly detected in the dermal papilla. ALP activity in the dermal papilla was moderate in very early anagen, reached a maximal level in early anagen, and was kept at a low level during .The bulbar dermal sheath showed intense ALP activity only in early anagen Although results from clinical trials vary, the majority of the evidence indicates that there is a direct correlation between the hair follicle depth and the level of ALP activity. In this NIH study,  study, PEO induced significantly high ALP activity at week 2, even greater than MXD. This study demonstrates that PEO stimulates both dermal papilla and ALP activity, which promotes blood circulation by relaxing vascular smooth muscle

To better understand the influence of the endocrine system in hair growth, researchers analyzed the mRNA expression of IGF-1 gene. It is a potent mitogen supporting cell growth and survival  and also plays a role to increase hair thickness In this study, PEO showed remarkably increased IGF-1 mRNA expression at week 2, whereas MXD at week 4.

In conclusion, the researchers experimental data suggested that a 3% PEO  facilitates hair growth by promoting the conservation of vascularization of hair dermal papilla, which may contribute to the induction of early anagen stage. In addition, PEO effectively stimulated hair growth in an animal model via several mechanisms and thus could be used as a therapeutic or preventive alternative medicine for hair loss in humans.

According to the researchers this was clinically more effective than current drugs. Since this was an animal study it is unknown whether or not the same effects would occur in humans. Essential oils used topically have been demonstrated effective in alopecia in the medical literature.

Other than a potential for individual skin sensitivity, there seems to me to be little risk in trying the oil. Here is a good one.  FREE shipping!
