Last month,  Scientific American published some brand new European research findings.  Several of these studies were the largest studies on the microbes that inhabit healthy peoples large intestines.  The microbiome that inhabits the intestines assists with everything from digestion to immune processes and many other things.

In one study, researchers learned that preferences for dark versus milk chocolate had slightly different microbiology which influenced these differences though they don't know why.  They also learned that there were major differences which occurred with drug usage,  such as the diabetes drug Metformin, female hormones, or antihistamines.

In another study, 14 different microbes were found.  Researchers had hoped to glean enough information to manipulate the microbiome for greater health but the study offered more questions than answers.  Especially with regard to prescription drugs and their effect on bacteria levels.  They postulated that these levels would have major impact on prescription drugs and the side effects they can cause.

There is also the correlation of vaginal birth versus C section in newborns.  Healthy microbes from the mother are thought to coat their babies leading to a more robust bacterial starting point in non C section mothers.

Another study highlighted stool transit time or the time it takes for food to digest.  They found that variations in this transit time significantly alters the microbiology in the gut.

For example, Parkinson's patients have a signature microbiome that may be helpful in the early stages of the disease.  They also learned that two types of IBS have specific signature transit time variations.  Still, transit times it is important to recognize can also be results of not causes of illness.

Researchers also learned that antibiotic usage in the first three years of a child's life are quite damaging.  They noted that this factor will heavily impact their gut ecology and immune systems later on.  They also noted that our obsession with germs deprives us from the microbial diversity that promotes long term health.

Low bacterial diversity was heavily implicated in inflammatory bowel disease and in Type 1 Diabetes.

Lastly they noted that genetics play some role in the microbiome but they expect much more to be revealed as research progresses.  Most of the researchers support supplementation with probiotics and prebiotics.

If you would like to learn more about your intestinal microbiology please contact us for an appointment.

Water Image: Vilcap.com

It is truly amazing that plain old H2O is involved in over 200 biochemical tasks in the human body each day.  Consider also that your body is almost 70% percent water.

Major physiologic processes that require proper hydration include:

  • blood circulation
  • metabolism
  • waste removal or detoxification
  • regulation of body temperature

At the point that your body loses from 1-2% of its fluid content it begins to signal you to drink by activating the thirst mechanism. Trouble is,by the time this occurs you have already become dehydrated.

Important signs that you may not be drinking enough water are:

#1 Bad Breath or Body Odor: patients often ask me about these problems and often these issues can be resolved by encouraging them to drink more.

#2 Muscle Cramps: I recall as a hospital intern many sleepless nights where foot and leg cramps would keep me awake or wake me from a sound sleep. I eventually figured out that the intervals I would go were causing dehydration and even drinking a lot after my shift would not avert this.

#3 Chills or Overheating. There are other reasons for this of course, but dehydration is a culprit for many folks.  Your body simply cannot response to climate issues if it is dehydrated to any extent.

#4 Chronic Headaches. If the fluid sac your brain resides in loses fluid your head loses its cushioning against the skull.  This can result in chronic head pain.

#5 Constipation.  When you are not drinking enough fluid, your large intestine will extract the water from the food you eat in order to meet its needs.  This will cause stool to become compacted, hard and dry.

#6 Dry Skin and Deep Wrinkles. Your skin in 64% water and your body will remove fluid from the skin in order to provide it to other organs as needed.  There are stories all over the net about people who completely changed their appearance due to drinking more water.

#7 Fatigue.  Fatigue, sleepiness and poor performance are all related to dehydration. The central nervous system cannot operate correctly without water so it shuts down. Symptoms of this involve sleepiness.

SOOOOOOO How much do you need?

There's no hard and fast rule so you need to figure it out for yourself.  If you exercise you will need more definitely due to sweating but also due to increased respiration.  Clues to help you are urine color. Urine should be light yellow or paler but this may not be attainable if you take vitamins.

The second is that you should urinate with a good volume several times throughout the day.

It WILL take some work and trial and error to figure this out for yourself.  But very much worth the effort.  Your body and health will thank you.  Next week I will discuss nutrients to save your vision.  Don't MISS it!  Sign up!

The Associated Press, (AP),  reported only a few days ago that MANY species of wild bees, butterflies and other creatures that pollinate plants are ALL headed towards extinction and that the entire world must wake up and pay attention before the food supply suffers according to a mega report from the United Nations.

This report is the result of more than two years of work by scientists globally to collaborate on an assessment of the earth's biodiversity beginning with the status of pollinators.

These findings are GRIM to say the least. At least 40% of pollinate species such as bees and butterflies are now headed toward extinction. These pollinators are key to crops like fruits and vegetables as well as coffee and chocolate.  Pollinators with vertebrates such as hummingbirds and bats are only slightly better off as 1 and 6 are now headed towards extinction.

According to study author, Simon Potts director of the Centre for Agri-Environmental research at the University of Reading in England, " we are in a period of decline, and there are going to be increasing consequences".

The environmental foes responsible for this situation are many and varied: less diversity and wildflowers for pollinators to use as food,  pesticide use especially neonicotinoid that attacks the central nervous system, habitat loss, disease, parasites, pathogens and of course, global warming.

There are, in the report some relatively simple recommendations such as crop diversity and the planting of wildflowers.  Others such as global warming will require countries to collectively agree on global action.

A more detailed article can be found in the February 26th issue of Time Magazine.

Grandma was right, heavy sigh, again!  Yup, wear your socks and slippers and keep your feet warm, along with some other body parts we will name a bit later, here's why:

If you, like a lot of my clients suffer from symptoms like these: feeling the cold easily, frequent nighttime urination, even to the point of incontinence,  frequent lower back or knee pain, low libido and infertility, recurring colds or viruses, or infection, anxiety, panic attacks, low energy or lack of motivation you definitely need to improve your kidney health and energy.

Here's some simple yet sometimes difficult ways to do this:

Early sleep and arise after the sunrises.

Eat warm food, avoid eating and drinking cold or God forbid raw food.

Keep warm, especially the lower back (that's near the kidney),(I am thrilled that my SUV has heated seats that have helped my kidneys stay warm this winter!) abdomen, head, legs and feet.

Do eat an appropriate small amounts intake of highly nourishing foods such as: meat, egg and dairy, if possible for you as these foods are very strengthening to the kidney. Other foods that assist in rebuilding the yang energy of the kidney are ginger tea, jasmine tea, lamb stew, venison,  walnuts, black sesame seeds, molasses, turmeric, and pumpkin. Do NOT overdo these though small amounts will readily change your energy and excess yang is an extremely dangerous condition! Try to keep your moods stable,as strong emotions damage especially anger, fear and shock damage

the body's  energy reservoir.

Do an appropriate amount of physical exercise especially walking or yoga or Qi Gong or Tai Chi, but do not overtax yourself.

When you wear socks, as Granny told you to,  you keep the meridians that run up and down your legs and feet warm. In Chinese medicine this helps keep your base energy active, alive and energized. It's your Kidney"fire" or Yang energy that helps keep your energy high and keeps you motivated in life.

Of course acupuncture, moxabustion,  and Chinese herbs are brilliant to correct these issues as well! :)

Right now bend down and touch your feet. Do they feel cold? Most people aren't even aware that their feet are cold.

Major organ energy meridians run up and down your legs to important internal organs like your kidney, uterus, liver, spleen, stomach and gallbladder, so keeping your legs covered is also a good trick to help with raising your Kidney Yang.

Try it out and watch these symptoms ease up or even disappear.

Next week our topic is: Read this only if you are as concerned about the environment as I am...If you are DO NOT miss this!

Our new events are now posted for March. Please let me know if you'd like me write about a topic.

and...Don't forget to sign up!

That's correct!  A brand new study finds that lowly vegetable extracts may hold the key to helping your skin repair and reverse the aging process!

Korean scientists are arguably the most advanced in the area of skin health and skin aging.   In fact, most advanced skin rejuvenation products come out of that country.

For example, the wildly popular B and B creams emanated from Korea.  Our skin rejuvenation products evolved from a large body of Koreanaswell as personal research.

Now, in a recent study published in the journal Nutrition Research it's suggested that vegetable extracts and derivatives, in addition to their other natural health benefits,  actually encourage live collagen production in the skin.

According to the study scientists, vegetable derivatives were shown to increase the level of type 1 collagen in the skin's fibroblasts. The derivatives used in the study were vegetable peptones -- peptides taken from vegetable substances -- that were then applied to skin to test for their effect on natural collagen production.

The collagen molecule is the human body's main fibrous and structural protein, and makes up about 30% of all proteins in the body. It is primarily responsible for keeping skin elastic and youthful in appearance, which is why collagen creams and supplements are a popular way to restore collagen among people looking for natural rejuvenation of their skin. These study results suggest that the" vegetable peptones are involved in attenuating skin aging, possibly by promoting cell proliferation and type 1 procollagen production," the study's authors wrote.

Even better is the fact that collagen production was shown to increase as the amount of vegetable extracts applied to skin was increased. The higher the concentration of vegetable peptones, the higher the amount of collagen produced, the study found.

The Nutrition Research study's findings are brand new, and it's likely that further research on the impact of vegetable peptones on collagen production will have to take place before a product using vegetable derivatives hits the market.

Skin health is one of my specialties.  We recently also discussed HA as another miracle ingredient and I will post many more articles such as how to alleviate hormonal acne beginning with our new events calendar next month.

Image PPP Dresden/Biofeedback

What if I told you it was possible to almost completely eliminate stress from your life completely in six weeks?

Would you believe me?  I have seen firsthand the amazing benefits of the method I will discuss in this article and cannot wait to share them with you!

BIOFEEDBACK

Biofeedback is a way to measure the body's physiological responses in real time, and a tool to learn to control them. Biofeedback generally relies on machines that measure heart rate, muscle tension, skin perspiration or even brain waves, and usually requires a therapist or other health professional to operate the machine, explain what the readings mean, and counsel clients to incorporate the information into lifestyle changes.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Biofeedback helps people regulate their stress response first by realizing when they are becoming stressed or anxious and then by employing various techniques like relaxation, breathing exercises and meditation to calm down their physiologic response.

Benefits from biofeedback arise from the increased relaxation in your body and the lack of a chronically triggered fight-or-flight response. Because chronic stress can be a trigger for many if not most illnesses, this can offer a significant and palpable improvement in the way people feel and how their bodies function.

Biofeedback helps calm clients by learning not only how your body is currently functioning and helps identify what needs to be changed. Also, by showing you in ‘real time' which relaxation techniques are working and which aren't, you're able to more easily grasp effective ways to relax your body's physiology and incorporate healthier habits into your lifestyle.

What Does It Treat?
Because biofeedback can  be intitated with any and all stress related conditions by helping to reverse the stress response (and helps you keep from it being  triggered in the first place!), it can be useful with a variety of conditions.

Some popular uses for biofeedback are: High BP, Anxiety, Insomnia, Pain, Stress, Muscle tension, back problems, tension headaches and migraines, and IBS, Trigeminal neuralgia and many more.

.

Getting Started

You may be using a simple form on your own:

  • Physical Awareness: Some physical responses can be easily measured without equipment, of course. When your body becomes tense, that's a natural message that you're stressed. Shallow breathing can be another. Becoming aware of your body's stress signals can arguably be a sort of natural form of ‘biofeedback'.
  • Household Tools:  A scale, thermometer, BP monitor and even mirrors can tell you about some of your body's stress signals .Both of these methods tell you about your physiology and help you to know that healthy changes are required, but are only the tip of the iceberg. Traditional biofeedback usually involves much more sophisticated measurements that can change more rapidly and are more difficult for the lay person to detect on their own.
  • Usually, standard biofeedback necessitates the use of a biofeedback technician—a therapist or health professional who will not only help you to understand your stress levels but also develop and perfect a relaxation response.

After much continuing education training we will offer 6 biofeedback sessions for only $450.00.  Ask us for more information or tell me at your next appointment and I will do a demo for you.  If you are not local you may be able to ask your doctor for a referral to a practioner.

  Image compliments of National Eczema.org

Is atopic dermatitis-eczema related to certain foods?  Which foods are triggers for various inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and seborrhea?  If so which?  These are questions that many clients ask me and for most the answers to those questions are very individual.  In my experience, topical treatments serve no purpose whatsoever as they do not address the underlying trouble which again can be as individual  as the triggers.  I will get to one perhaps major trigger in a bit.

Conventional medicine links eczema as an allergic reaction of the skin to various environmental , food and chemical substances. Eczema affects from 5-7% of the general population and many studies have demonstrated a correlation of allergy to several foods and beverages, dairy, beef, gluten, wheat, citrus, tomatoes, and even fish.  Other studies have linked stress and genetic tendencies, antibiotic  history, and even heavy metals.  IgG testing for food sensitivies such as my clinic offers can be a good first step to finding out a person's specific triggers for these types of inflammatory skin conditions.

I am pretty sure that this does not address the entire cause and while it can afford some temporary amelioration of the skin symptoms I believe the inflammation arises from the bacterial environment in the gut.

When the skin becomes “leaky” and therefore not correctly fulfilling its role in protecting the body from environmental toxins I believe it occurs due to the chronic inflammation inherent in a gut with imbalanced flora.  When this is corrected, ( which takes time and dedication), the skin becomes again the natural barrier it is intended to be and in many cases becomes much less reactionary to various foods although if a true allergy exists it is best to avoid those individual foods or eat them on a very careful rotation  basis.

One major trigger that people don't know about regarding dermatitis, eczema, seborrhea, psoriasis et al. is caffeine, especially coffee.  Coffee consumption can trigger eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions by creating more bodily inflammation.  Coffee and caffeine in general also are very dehydrating to the skin thus damaging it further and therefore in my opinion creating more “leaking”.

While current research champions coffee as a rich source of antioxidants I think those are better off obtained from fruits and veggies.  Other known issues with coffee and caffeinated beverages are anxiety, insomnia, blood sugar related to a dysregulated insulin response,CNS issues, adrenal fatigue and exhaustion and finally GI issues.  By speeding food too quickly through the GI tract, coffee affects nutrient absorption. I recommend that people with the above conditions avoid it.

Just a few supplements that have been studied for inflammatory skin conditions include: omega 3 fatty acids, Probiotics-discover why our MAXBIOTIC is the best probiotic available anywhere, vitamin D3, and vitamin E FREE shipping!

If you wish to end your struggle with Eczema, Acne, Psoriasis, Dermatitis, Hives, Seborrhea or any other inflammatory skin disorder, don't delay,  schedule a FREE consultation today.

Alzheimer's disease is currently at epidemic proportions, with almost 6 million Americans  diagnosed and living with the disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

With no known cure and a terminal prognosis, Alzheimer's disease is characterized by degeneration and death to brain cells, leading to a progressive and permanent loss of both intellectual and social skills, and, ultimately, premature death.

From India's ancient ayurvedic medicine arrives new hope for this disorder. Recently  two herbs have shown remarkable promise in mitigating the disease. Each of these herbs have been part of  India's  Ayurvedic heritage for thousands of years.

Both curcumin and ashwaganda have been a part of India's Ayurvedic medical system for thousands of years.

Each are highly respected as  highly rejuvenative herbs which move the blood and remedy stagnation of the blood which is thought to be key to many degenerative conditions according to eastern philosophy.

Now, new research revealed both herbs may also fight the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease. The compound curcumin, which is found in the spice turmeric, is another notable herb for brain health. Recently revealed as effective in helping to stop the protein clumping that is the first step in diseases such as Parkinson's disease,5 past research has shown that curcumin may help by inhibiting the formation of destructive beta amyloid plaques in the brain of Alzheimer's patients, as well as break up existing plaques.

Here's the scoop:

·         Curcumin is more effective in inhibiting the formation of the protein fragments than many other potential Alzheimer's treatments

·         The low molecular weight and polar structure of curcumin allows it to penetrate the blood-brain barrier effectively and bind to beta amyloid.

·         Alzheimer's symptoms caused by inflammation and oxidation are eased by curcumin's powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties

ALSO, people with Alzheimer's tend to have high levels of inflammation in their brains, and curcumin is known primarily for its potent anti-inflammatory properties.

The second herb, ashwaganda extract has been studied primarily as an adaptogenic herb for its ability to herb the body withstand stress. Now, researchers at the National Brain Research Centre (NBRC, have conducted studies on mice that suggest ashwaganda extract may reverse memory loss and improve cognitive abilities in those with the disease. Initially, mice with Alzheimer's were unable to learn or retain what they learned, but after receiving ashwaganda for 20 days, this improved significantly. After 30 days, the behavior of the mice returned to normal. Researchers reported:A reduction in amyloid plaques (amyloid plaques, along with tangles of nerve fibers, contribute to the degradation of wiring in brain cells)

·         Improved cognitive abilities

Rather than impacting the brain directly, researchers found that the herb worked by boosting a protein in the liver, which enters the bloodstream and helps clear amyloid from the brain. Researchers concluded:

"The remarkable therapeutic effect of W. somnifera [ashwaganda]... reverses the behavioral deficits and pathology seen in Alzheimer's disease models."

The featured study is not the first time this humble herb has been implicated in improved brain health among Alzheimer's disease patients. In 2005, researchers found that withanolide derivatives (withanolide A, withanoside IV, and withanoside VI) isolated from ashwagandha improved neurite extension in both normal and damaged brain cells in Alzheimer's disease-model mice.

Additional lifestyle recommendations to improve brain and cognitive health and reduce risk.  If you have diabetes, reverse it naturally, same with heart disease and importantly,

.

·         Avoid anticholinergic and statin cholesterol drugs.  Drugs that block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, have been shown to increase your risk of dementia. These drugs include certain night-time pain relievers, antihistamines, sleep aids, certain antidepressants, medications to control incontinence, and certain narcotic pain relievers. I have personally seen this happen in clients where after being prescribed these medications patients well known to me went into cognitive declines they never recovered from.

We have a wonderful product that conveniently combines optimal dosages of both curcumin and ashwaganda in one formula here. FREE shipping.

For reversal of Alzheimer's anecdotal reports on the web seem to indicate a course of four to six full months is necessary before improvements are measurable.

Next week's topic: This herb halts even advanced cancers, see you then!

Anyone over 40 should really think about taking this supplement. While there are many claims lot of claims about anti-aging effects from growth hormone, or this herb or that. There is no question that the loss of this substance over time is responsible for the visible signs of aging, wrinkled skin, hair loss, voice changes, diminished eyesight, wear-and-tear type osteoarthritis, yet little is known of this wonderful molecule.

A remarkable finding is that these visible aging signs can be reversed with oral HA supplements.  For instance, a  client, a 60 year old woman called me from her winter home in Arizona. She works at a golf course. Her knees were painful and "clicked" when she moved. She called to say, after just two weeks of taking 300 mg of daily oral HA, that her knee pain had disappeared, her husband had told her that her facial skin looked better than following two previous surgeries, her hair dresser also reported that her hair had begun to grow and was thicker, and, her chronic eye dryness and need for reading glasses disappeared! Others have written or called to say they had canceled knee or other joint  surgeries,  their wrinkles had disappeared, and friends began asking if they had undergone plastic surgery. The visible results of oral HA supplementation can sometimes be remarkable and rapid.

While we focus much on the main proteins in skin—collagen and elastin—when we look at skin health another cause of the degeneration of collagen is the decrease in hydrated HA, which supports collagen. This is why skin moisture is so important. Putting moisturizers on the skin surface helps, but this is like using a small Band-Aid on a large cut. Replenishing skin HA is much more important. Drinking plenty of fluids also helps keep the HA hydrated. HA helps keep the collagen intact and smoothes out the skin to prevent wrinkling.

There are no foods high in HA.  Actually, a good example of an equivalent is Echinacea, which helps to protect and retain HA levels in the body this cannot be taken on a longterm basis. Other nutrients such as bioflavonoids (quercetin, bilberry, cranberry, green tea, grape seed, others), ferulic acid from Ginkgo biloba and oryzanol in rice bran, as well as IP6 phytic acid, all of which bind to iron and copper and some which inhibit viral replication, help to retain HA levels.

One form of oral HA is derived from rooster combs. Historically it is interesting that  during a famine in China, rooster combs were consumed in an effort to get more calories out of chicken, and people noted improved skin health. Soon rooster combs were sought after as a beautifying food. There are reports that Marie Antoinette favored rooster combs for her complexion. Eventually, rooster combs were eaten as a delicacy in France, northern Italy and China.

It is important to choose a VERY VERY good  bioavailable product and use it consistently for at least a month or two.  Here's ours-FREE shipping! I do not recommend buying it from other sources because HA is very perishable and will degrade if not stored under optimal conditions.  Topically, HA is prevalent in most of my AWESOME topical skin products but again, we use the best which make a difference in a matter of DAYS, according to my clients. Here is a MIRACLE product!

By the way, I KNOW you will benefit from my products and advice so as much as I enjoy hearing positive stuff from you, it would be even more beneficial to help others by mentioning us in a review! We are on health grades, YELP, GOOGLE, Angie's List, Yahoo!  Thank YOU!  Happy Holidays,

While many folks enjoy the holidays others, (like myself ) find the holiday season extremely stressful and difficult.  This week we'll look at the seasons top stress busters compliments of Meghan Reitz and Associates in Schaumburg!

The holidays are a time when many families spend more time together than normal which is something many look forward to. But it can also bring out irritations and frustrations especially if you spend this time with relatives you normally are unable to see or even avoid the rest of the year.

HOW TO COPE: Remind yourself in the knowledge that this family togetherness will come to an end. Try to find something good in the war stories and reminscing  and try not to get pulled down into "old" stuff!

Remembering the ones we've lost

The holidays can be a big trigger when grieving the loss of a loved one. It often becomes more “real” during the holidays that your loved one is no longer physically with you. This becomes particularly true when it is the first holiday without this person.

HOW TO COPE: It's OK. We all grieve in different ways. Try to share moments of happiness or humor with your family and friends. Remember funny stories of the person or great accomplishments. Honor them in the way you know best and lean on those around you for support.

Holiday Let Down

Do you ever feel that things “should” be a certain way during the holidays? Breaking from traditions or experiencing a holiday that doesn't match up with your visions often leads to disappointment. Your high expectations for the holidays can lead to a let down when things just don't work out the way you wanted or expected.

HOW TO COPE: Grounding to the rescue again! Think about the things that you find truly important and meaningful about the holiday. These are usually easily attainable things that will help you better set your expectations. Maybe your parents are fighting or the turkey you made is too dry. At least you have your family there and something to eat. If there is no silver lining you can come up with… make one! Do a kind gesture for a neighbor you barely know or donate food or money to a charity to make sure you get your needs for a successful holiday met by helping others.

Finances

During the holidays, your wallet often takes a hit. It is an expensive time of year with all the gifts, parties, food, and travel. If finances are something you already have concerns about, the holidays can increase the pressure.

HOW TO COPE: Reduce your obligations and think outside the box for low cost, meaningful gifts. It is also okay to admit financial issues to family or friends if you are comfortable with sharing that information. The holiday season isn't about going into debt. You might be surprised by how supportive others can be if you are open and honest about it. Also, consider a “no-gift” holiday where the focus is more on the time spent together in the spirit of the holiday. Be upfront about your financial ability to travel as well. With new technologies like FaceTime, you can often connect virtually to family and friends afar, which should be the focus of the holiday either way.

Overwhelming Holiday Obligations

Everyone's schedule gets jam packed around the holidays with cookie exchanges, work functions, school performances, shopping, cooking and visiting with friends and family. It can be very overwhelming! Needing to be somewhere, remembering to do something and interacting with others can take a lot out of you both physically and emotionally. There can also be added exhaustion from the over indulgence in sweets and alcohol as well as those late nights.

HOW TO COPE: Say “No”. It's hard to say no to holiday events and requests, but by not obligating yourself to everything everyone asks of you, you will be taking the first step to self-care. When you can't say no or don't want to, then it is important to practice some mindfulness techniques to keep everything in perspective and positive. Think about the joy you're bringing to those around you as well as look forward to the feeling of success you will have when you complete these tasks. For each thing you take on, let it be the only one in your mind, keep yourself focused on that task and the good that your obligatory task is bringing you or others. When all else fails… just breathe. A few minutes of calming breathing or meditation a few times a day can push the holiday crazy away and let you focus on successfully accomplishing your Holiday activities.

With some attention, consciousness and planning alot of stressors can be managed very well freeing you to experience all the JOY of the season.
