lyme disease treatment

A recent study indicates that this natural agent is more effective at combating Lyme disease than antibiotics. The study's results were recently published in the European Journal of Microbiology and Immunology. Lyme disease is particularly challenging to treat as it mutates in an unpredictable way. Traditional antibiotics are not guaranteed to generate a lasting cure for Lyme disease. This natural plant just might be a more effective and safer way to treat Lyme disease than conventional antibiotics and other treatment methods.

About the Study

A preclinical study conducted by academicians at the University of New Haven's Department of Biology and Environmental Science shows that Stevia leaf extract boasts strong antibiotic activity against the pathogen known as Borrelia Burgoderfi. This is the pathogen responsible for the onset of Lyme disease. The study determined that Stevia whole leaf extract proved effective against all known varieties of Borrelia Burgoderfi.

The CDC has determined that a minimum of 300,000 individuals are afflicted with Lyme disease per year. Antibiotics are currently used to treat the malady yet they are toxic and merely address superficial components of the infection. Stevia proves more effective in combating Lyme disease below the surface of the infection. Stevia excavates it from the system to the point that it can't induce harm.

The University of New Haven researchers compared an alcohol extract of whole Stevia leaf typically sold in the U.S. retail market to traditional antibiotics. Each treatment's abilities were assessed in regards to their impact on Borrelia Burgdorferi. Stevia stems from a plant with inherent phytochemical defense mechanisms that guard against infection. The consumption of Stevia transmits some of these antimicrobial properties to the human body. Stevia's phytochemicals likely include steviol, austroinullin, dulcoside, rebaudi oxides, B-carotene, stevioside and riboflavin that contain antimicrobial properties which combat pathogens. The purpose of these compounds is to prevent microbial infections.

The study's authors made it clear that upwards of 20 percent of Lyme disease patients are treated with antibiotics in the initial two to four weeks following diagnosis. Side effects from this course of treatment range from fatigue to muscle and joint aches and general pain. Some such effects lasted half a year.

Study Results

Stevia proved quite effective at eliminating Borrelia Burgdorferi spirochetes as well as persisters. Stevia sub-culture experiments and antibiotic treated cells were studied for upwards of two weeks. Stevia drastically reduced Borrelia Burgdorferi compared to antibiotics. It can be concluded that Stevia leaf appears to be quite promising as a means of combating Borrelia Burgdorferi. It is important to note that Borrelia Burgdorfer's most antibiotic resistant form (biofilm) actually heightened in mass when certain antibiotics were applied. Stevia leaf extract reduced such biofilm mass on collagen and plastic test surfaces by a whopping 40 percent.

A Word of Caution

It must be noted that the above-referenced study is a first. Readers should not interpret the results to mean that the simple consumption of whole Stevia leaf extract will produce superior results for Lyme disease treatment than traditional antibiotics. However, the study will certainly catalyze additional research on this topic.

There is no indication that Stevia can cause any sort of harm. The same cannot be said of traditional Lyme disease treatments like antibiotics. Those who are looking for an all-natural way to guard against the onset of a Lyme disease infection should give Stevia serious consideration.  Please visit us next week for a discussion about heart failure and  it's prevention. While these supplements are typically stereotyped as bodybuilding fuel exclusively used by gym participants,  McMaster University researchers have determined that those who take them on a regular basis in combination with other ingredients in the form of a drinkable formula significantly improve their physical strength. This is particularly true for elderly individuals.

The findings described above are especially important as senior citizens represent one of the fastest growing demographic groups. Muscle mass and strength decrease throughout the aging process. This process is referred to as sarcopenia. It heightens the risks for falls along with metabolic disorders that spur the need for help from assisted living specialists and centers. Elderly individuals who are not proactive in the mission to slow the progression of sarcopenia have the potential to deteriorate to the point that they find it difficult to complete regular daily activities like moving up and down stairs or rising out of a chair.

The Fight Against Sarcopenia Several nutritional ingredients are known to be effective in reducing or limiting the onset of sarcopenia. However, the McMaster University research team's finding is the first to show that a specific combination of ingredients is helpful to combat sarcopenia. The ingredient combination is: whey protein, fish oil, calcium, vitamin D and creatine. The study involved two groups of men. Each participant was at least 70 years old. One group took the nutritional supplement comprised of the ingredients listed above across six weeks without engaging in any sort of exercise regimen. The other group consumed a placebo. The goal of the study was to determine if the consumption of the supplement could spur gains in lean body mass and strength.

After the six week study period, subjects continued taking the nutritional supplement as well as the placebo while passing through an exercise training program that lasted 12 weeks. This regimen consisted of high-intensity interval training and resistance training. Contrary to popular opinion, most senior citizens ARE capable of performing such exercises.“We chose that combination of exercises to get a maximal benefit in terms of fitness and muscle strength,” said Gianni Parise, co-lead on the study. “I know many think older persons can't do that type of exercise, but that's simply untrue.”

The Results The researchers found improvements in overall strength as well as deteriorating muscle mass for subjects both prior to the exercise regimen and following the regimen. Consuming the supplement in the first six weeks caused a 700-gram lean body mass gain. This is equal to the muscle amount such men would typically lose in a year's time. When the subjects engaged in exercise two times per week, they exhibited significant strength gains, especially when contrasted to those who took the placebo. The study's results show that the whey protein-based supplement clearly does provide significant enhancements to senior adults' muscle mass and strength. These benefits were bolstered when they engaged in the specific exercises outlined above.“Clearly, exercise is a key part of the greatly improved health profile of our subjects,” said Kirsten Bell, a PhD student who worked on the study, “but we are very excited by the enhancements the supplement alone and in combination with exercise was able to give to our participants.” Please visit my store to purchase FREE shipping or kindly, schedule an appointment for specific recommendations on diet, supplements and exercise specific to your condition and situation.  Thank YOU!  847-577-4455 Mondays through Friday 2-6PM CST.

We've become increasingly aware of sugar's negative effects on the body. But we still tend to think of them as physical ill effects, such as increased risk for diabetes and obesity. A connection between this  and poor mental health might seem counterintuitive—especially given how much Americans seem to like comforting themselves with this. A new study, however, found that men who consume high levels of sugar are more likely to develop depression or anxiety compared to those with low-sugar diets.

The findings come from an analysis by researchers at University College London of questionnaires submitted by more than 5,000 men and 2,000 women in the United Kingdom from 1983 to 2013. Participants reported on their diet and lifestyle, including surveys about their mental health and information about their weight and height.

Researchers used the reports to estimate how much sugar people were eating daily; the top third of participants were consuming more than 67 grams of added sugar, while the bottom third consumed less than 39.5 grams. (There are 4 grams of sugar in one teaspoon.) According to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey published in 2013, men in the UK get about 75 percent of that added sugar from sweet foods and beverages.

Previous studies had shown a link between sugar consumption and depression. But knowing there's a link only takes you so far; it doesn't prove causation. Do people who feel depressed eat more sugar, or does their sugar intake actually affect their mental state, leading to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression? That's one question researchers hoped to clarify.

"Sweet food has been found to induce positive feelings in the short-term. People experiencing low mood may eat sugary foods in the hope of alleviating negative feelings," Anika Knüppel, the paper's lead author, said in a statement. "Our study suggests a high intake of sugary foods is more likely to have the opposite effect on mental health in the long-term."

Using the data, researchers found that men among the top third for sugar consumption were 23 percent more likely to experience depression or anxiety over the next five years. That's after controlling for factors such as general health and socio-economic status. Interestingly, women did not show the same pattern, and researchers aren't yet clear why. But researchers did not find that men and women with mood disorders were more likely to consume sugar, strengthening the other possibility: that sugar does affect mental health.

"High sugar diets have a number of influences on our health but our study shows that there might also be a link between sugar and mood disorders, particularly among men," Knüppel added. "There are numerous factors that influence chances for mood disorders, but having a diet high in sugary foods and drinks might be the straw that breaks the camel's back." She also called for more research into the connection among a broader population.

The study arrives as government around the world search for ways to curb sugar consumption. Canada's Northwest Territory is considering a sugar tax, and the UK already has a tax on sugary soft drinks set to go into effect next April. In the United States, as always, things are more complex: Berkeley, California, taxes sugar-sweetened beverages, with several other cities looking to follow its lead, but the sugar industry has lobbied the FDA to delay nutrition labels that would include a separate line about added sugars.

At the very least, the new study suggests that decreasing your sugar intake isn't just good for your body—it may just be good for your mind, too. PNGALL

I have seen results like these for years!  Please contact us if you would like an appointment to discuss.

Researchers at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Australia have made a breakthrough in the treatment of peanut allergies in children.

"These children have been eating peanut freely in their diet without having to follow any particular program of peanut intake in the years after treatment was completed," said researcher Prof Mimi Tang.

The new form of treatment combines a probiotic with peanut oral immunotherapy, known as PPOIT. Instead of avoiding the allergen, the treatment is designed to reprogram the immune system's response to peanuts and eventually develop a tolerance.  Forty-eight children were enrolled in the trial and were randomly given either a combination a probiotic with peanut protein in increasing amounts, or a placebo, once daily for 18 months.

At the end of the original trial, 82% of children who received the immunotherapy treatment were deemed tolerant to peanuts compared with just 4% in the placebo group.

Tang said the results were exciting and had been life-changing for participants.

"The way I see it is that we had children who came into the study allergic to peanuts, having to avoid peanuts in their diet, being very vigilant around that, carrying a lot of anxiety with that and, at the end of treatment and even four years later, many of these children who had benefited from our probiotic peanut therapy could now live like a child who didn't have peanut allergy."

I have seen this happen with most allergens after treating and optimizing the immune system via the gut.  It is a rewarding thing when people who were destroyed by various allergens are able to imbibe or otherwise tolerate substances that caused them very great health distress.

Let us know if we can help you! 847-577-4455

Next week, join me to discuss how varied gut bacterias can cause a myriad of immune disorders...Sign up so you don't miss anything!

When I was still in school, my grandmother suddenly became unable to walk.  She also inadvertently became the first person I ever helped via nutritional intervention.  After asking tons of questions and delving into her clinical situation, I discovered that she had had a large portion of her stomach removed years before due to ulcers and therefore would be lacking in the intrinsic factor necessary to assimilate vitamin B12. She should have been receiving B12 injections since that time.  I suspected a vitamin B12 deficiency was the root cause for all her problems and I was right!  My uncle, an MD, was not really happy that I was the one to figure this out....lol!

Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency can be subtle yet impactful - and not getting enough can cause some serious issues. In her case, she became paralyzed due to lesions on her spine which with corrective neurosurgery were corrected.  Her ability to walk was restored and her dementia and depression resolved quickly upon being given B12 supplementation.

All of this suffering could have been easily avoided!

Modern nutritional research offers much more information about which nutrients are required for optimal health than in years past. The general opinion of most health care providers has been that patients should eat a balanced diet in order to make sure their nutritional needs are being met. Until the past few decades this was good advice, but the nutrients contained in most foods sold in grocery stores has been depleted, due to the way they were grown and processed. This means the nutrients most important to the proper functioning of the human body are best ingested through supplementation. Those who have a deficiency of vitamin B12 may be experiencing some serious health problems that they are not even aware of.

Food Sources of Vitamin B12
Food products that come from animals are the only sources of the vitamin, so someone who follows a vegetarian or vegan diet would most likely need to supplement B12. It is also good to supplement if one has a diet that restricts the consumption of meat, dairy, eggs because of the relatively high levels of cholesterol and fat.

Health Problems Caused by a Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Some of these health issues are easily mistaken as symptoms of other diseases, such as diabetes. Others may be confused with common aging problems.

  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Tingling and/or numbness in the extremeties
  • Memory loss and cognitive difficulties
  • Difficulty in walking, because of staggering or balance problems

Health care providers may not be able to identify these problems as a deficiency of Vitamin B12, so a blood test may be needed, in order to reach a correct diagnosis. There are a few other less common symptoms that indicate a deficiency of the vitamin.

  • Paranoia and hallucinations
  • Anemia
  • Jaundiced skin
  • An inflamed and swollen tongue

Many people are not very well educated about their nutritional needs and the problems they may experience from various deficiencies. Most people have too much stress in their lives and struggle to find enough time in the day to get everything done. People often naturally think whatever fatigue or weakness they feel is the result of not enough time and rest, but symptoms could well be due to a Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Although vegans and  seniors are most at risk for nutritional deficiencies due to their dietary restrictions, a depressed appetite and medications, younger women also experience anemia due to monthly menstruation. The average person is often surprised at how much better they feel once they begin a regime of Vitamin B12 supplementation. It is important to note that not all B12 supplements are the same, so if adding the vitamin to a diet it would be wise to research all the options available. Common B12 supplements actually contain arsenic and should be avoided. It IS important to work with a nutritionally oriented doctor for this as B12 supplementation can mask other types of anemia.  With the advent of sublingual supplements, it is usually not necessary to receive injections anymore. If you know me at all, you know that I avoid media like the plague.  Since childhood, I have been incredibly selective about films I will watch, I do not particpate in watching news, ever and on and on.  Recently though, I have intuitively sought out uplifting media and it turns out I may be onto something!

For decades, media researchers have focused  entirely on the harmful effects of media, including the effects of media violence on aggression, the media's role in increasing racial and gender stereotypes, and its potential to shape people's perception of the world as a dangerous place. Indeed, since the 1930s, debates have raged about the potential anti-social effects of media.

However, more recently, scholarship in media psychology has begun to look at the flip side: the positive effects media can have when it's more uplifting and inspiring. In the last few years, studies have illustrated how, just as some films, TV shows, and other media can foster anti-social behavior, media with positive images and messages can make us want to become better people and help others—to become more “prosocial.

Rather than simply seeing media as a negative influence to rein in, we're beginning to understand its potential to spread goodness on a wide scale.

One 2012 study by a scholar in the field, Mary Beth Oliver of Penn State University, identified the power of films that elicit “elevation,” the warm, uplifting feeling we get when we watch someone perform deeply moral acts, such as acts of gratitude, generosity, or loyalty. In this study, Oliver and her colleagues asked 483 students to recall either a particularly meaningful or a particularly pleasurable movie they watched recently and to indicate the degree to which they felt joyful or elevated from watching it. When the researchers analyzed the content of these movies, they found that, sure enough, the meaningful movies depicted altruistic values, such as social justice and care for the weak, significantly more often than the pleasurable movies did.

They also found that the meaningful movies elicited greater feelings of elevation among respondents, which was expressed in a distinct set of emotional and physical sensations: feeling happy and sad at the same time, a lump in one's throat, tearing up, a rising or opening of the chest, and chills.

What's more, these feelings of elevation, in turn, were associated with a greater motivation to become a better person and do good things for others; the pleasurable movies, by contrast, motivated people to enjoy themselves and seek popularity.

Research also suggests that movies can influence not only our desire to do good but also the way we perceive the world as a whole. This research builds on earlier findings that the amount of TV people watch correlates with the degree to which they will see the world as a dangerous place, also known as “
mean-world syndrome.” Research on inspiring media, by contrast, suggests that exposure to elevating media may have the potential to shift our perception of the world toward a “kind-world syndrome.”

. For positive media to have strong, lasting effects on us individually or collectively, I believe we need to consume it consistently, over time, just as eating right only once a week does not make us healthier.

But it is encouraging to see that these effects are possible, and that our media consumption patterns can be a force for good in the world. I have begun to seek out uplifting stories about people making a difference and I must report, it is making a difference in my outlook!

Next week, join me as I report on the important signs of a B-12 deficiency.  With so many people becoming vegan this is so important!  Sign up!  So you do not miss it! LUND, Sweden — Recent research has established the four best ways to completely minimize your own greenhouse gas emissions and keep the planet healthy.

The most significant tactic?

Researchers from Lund University and the University of British Columbia studied 39 peer-reviewed research articles and government reports in order to identify the most efficient ways to help the planet.

Sorry folks, the most dramatic impact a person can have to help keep the planet healthy is to have no or less children.

The amount of people on this planet plays a tremendous role on greenhouse gases. The researchers determined that having one fewer child can save up to nearly 60 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

In addition to avoiding procreation, the team found these three environment-efficient personal lifestyle changes to be the most beneficial: eat healthier, reduce air travel, and abandon your car.

“There are so many factors that affect the climate impact of personal choices, but bringing all these studies side-by-side gives us confidence we've identified the actions that make a big difference,” says lead author Seth Wynes, a PhD student at the University of British Columbia, in a press release. “Those of us who want to step forward on climate need to know how our actions can have the greatest possible impact. This research is about helping people make more informed choices.”

Choosing to eat healthy foods is beneficial to your own body as well as the planet. Switching to a plant-based diet is beneficial due to the enormous amounts of emissions that are produced from livestock as well as food retailers. According to this study, focusing on a plant-based diet can be four times more effective than recycling.

Traveling isn't exactly simple to avoid as we all deserve to get away every now and again. But minimizing emissions from travel is easily one of the most significant. A single round-trip transatlantic flight produces 1.6 metric tons of emissions, while driving an average car for a year produces about two-and-a-half metric tons.

The study suggests that not driving is eleven times more effective than recycling.

The researchers also found that these for personal lifestyle choices are usually overlooked in school textbooks and media suggestions. Instead, the focus is usually on smaller, less efficient actions such as minimizing electricity use or recycling plastic and cans.

Lund University associate professor Kimberly Nicholas, who co-authored the study, acknowledges that although the lifestyle changes maybe be hard at first, they are extremely beneficial to people around the world.

“We recognize that these are deeply personal choices. But we can't ignore the climate effect our lifestyle actually has. Personally, I've found it really positive to make many of these changes,' she says. “It's especially important for young people establishing lifelong patterns to be aware which choices have the biggest impact. We hope this information sparks discussion and empowers individuals.”

I hope you will share this information widely.

Next week I hope you will join me as I explore how positive media can make you better....Sign Up! so you don't miss a thing.

Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara, credited with building the foundations of Japanese medicine and helping make Japan the world leader in longevity, often practiced what he preached.

The Physician, honorary president of St. Luke's International Hospital recommended several basic guidelines for living a long, healthy life in an interview with Japan Times journalist Judit Kawaguchi. Among them: Don't retire. And if you must, retire much later than age 65. This made sense when the average life expectancy was 68 but now it is almost 85 so retirement should be much later, he said.

Up until a few months before his death on July 18 in Tokyo, the New York Times reports Hinohara continued to treat patients, kept an appointment book with space for five more years, and worked up to 18 hours a day. He was 105 years old. Following are some highlights from that interview.

"He believed that life is all about contribution, so he had this incredible drive to help people, to wake up early in the morning and do something wonderful for other people. This is what was driving him and what kept him living," Kawaguchi, who considered Hinohara her mentor, told the BBC.

"He always had today's goals, tomorrow's, and the next five years'," she said.

Hinohara's other  health guidelines include:

Worry less about eating well or getting more sleep and have fun. "We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime."

If you want to live long, don't be overweight. "For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat."

Don't blindly follow what your doctor says. "When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure. Contrary to popular belief, doctors can't cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery? I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine."

To conquer pain, have fun. "Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it. If a child has a toothache, and you start playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic need of patients: We all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art classes."

Always take the stairs and carry your own belongings. "I take two stairs at a time, to get my muscles moving."

Sounds like the good doctor was right on!

The majority of  people aren't aware of this but most probiotics do not work.  In fact, in several recent studies, over 90% of store brands were found to be ineffective...even professional brands often do not pass rigorous testing here's why:

The "Acid Test"!

High stomach acid levels are necessary to break down foods and this is good for you but bad for most probiotics as the delivery systems are insufficient to prevent the acid from disabling them...they then die off in minutes to hours in most cases!

In even quality products, the few proflora organisims that survive don't make it to the large intestine.  It takes a fail safe delivery system to ensure that.

Most people are in need of specific flora in the microbiome of the gut and generic products may not be correct for their body's needs.  If the body perceives an overabundance of something it simply stops absorbing it...this biofeedback mechanism exists to prevent problems of toxicity from developing.

Many people have guts  which are so inflammed due to disease, infection, allergies etc. that the gut itself is inhospitable to most products.  Overgrowths of competing "bad" bacteria can essentially lock out good bacteria from implanting.

Many, many billions of diverse microorganisms are needed to help recreate a healthy microbiome and most products do not supply enough.

Lastly, flora products are exceedingly fragile and require a commitment to proper shipment and temperature. This doesn't happen often.

It is HARD work to truly grow this primary system for your body and it takes a commitment and usually testing to accomplish it.  It takes looking a the clients current status, and then building treatments for all the above factors to accomplish this.  It will not happen with one product or in a few months.

Additionally, people need to make other lifestyle changes to facilitate a welcoming atmosphere to good friendly flora. It can be done but it takes my typical client at least a year of work to reap the benefits.  They will be the first to tell you though, how rewarding that is!

I test and retest each clients microbiome to ensure they are improving internally, not just clinically.  Products, I use in my clinic have stood these rigorous tests...

Additionally, we change protocols regularly as diversity is the name of the game in correcting the gut...the more different strains of bacteria one has the better...this is also a function of prebiotic supplements and beneficial foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha, miso, vegemite and many more...

If you are having problems with your gut, and health I encourage you to contact me for a consultation...at the very least you will learn a great deal.

Best of Health!

Whole-wheat bread is better for you than white bread, right? Maybe. According to a study published today in the journal Cell Metabolism, the answer depends on the bacterial status of your gut!
“One of the reasons we focused on bread is that it's one of the most heavily eaten foods worldwide,” says study author Eran Elinav, an
immunology researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science. “It amounts to somewhere between 10 percent to 40 percent of our daily caloric content. And as such there are many myths about good bread and bad bread. A whole culture has developed around it, but when you look in the literature there's really very little proof.”

Glycemic response is a measure of how the body's blood sugar responds after we eat a meal. While all foods cause some increase in blood sugar, some foods can cause our blood sugar to spike to unhealthy levels, while others cause a more modest increase. In general, a high glycemic response is considered bad because it's linked to the development of insulin resistance—a precursor to Type II diabetes. Diabetes, apart from being a problematic disease in its own right, is also linked to the development of heart disease and stroke. In general, it's assumed that highly processed and refined foods, like white bread, cause a higher glycemic response than less processed whole wheat breads.

But when Elinav's team looked at the data in aggregate, that isn't what they found. Neither bread was better than the other—both elicited a similar glycemic response, when you averaged out the entire study group. A closer look at the data revealed something curious, however: the data sets were showing different glycemic responses for different breads, but they were cancelling each other out.

“We discovered that roughly half the people in our study who consumed an industrialized white bread that you can purchase at your local supermarket had a favorable response to that bread as compared to our very fancy whole wheat sourdough bread, which was made in the best bakery in Tel Aviv,” says Elinav. “The other half of people featured an exact opposite response.”

In other words, from the perspective of blood sugar, there isn't an inherently good bread or bad bread. Rather, there's a bread that's good for you, and that same exact bread might be bad for your friend. What's healthy, it turns out, depends on the person.

Perhaps most intriguingly, Elinav and his team found that they could predict which type of bread would most likely trigger a high insulin reaction for each participant based on samples of their gut microbiomes.

Our bodies play host to a broad community of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that help to make us who we are. Although we tend to think of microbes as being harmful, these microbes play a crucial role in maintaining our health and wellbeing. Though research on the subject is still very much at its early stage, the microbes in our gut (which encompasses the full length of our digestive tract, including stomach and intestines), play a crucial role in digestion, obesity, and perhaps even in maintaining our mood.

In an earlier study, Elinav and his team were able to create an algorithm that would predict how a person would respond to food—that is, whether or not it would trigger a high or low glycemic response—based on the person's lifestyle, medical background, and the composition and function of their microbiome. By taking microbiome samples of participants in this study and plugging them into the algorithm, Elinav and his colleagues were able to determine that the algorithm matched the data. Based just on the data they plugged in, they could predict who would fare better eating white bread, versus eating the whole wheat sourdough bread.

Before you start chowing down on white bread by the bagful, it's important to note that there are some limits to the study. For starters, the sample size was small, though its experimental (rather than observational) design does work in its favor. But Elinav was mostly focused on glycemic response, not overall nutrition. Industrialized bread has a bad reputation for more than just the potential glycemic response: it's also lower in nutrients. Whole wheat breads tend to have more fiber and vitamins, including magnesium, zinc, and folic acid. A lot of the patients Elinav studies tend to have diabetes or pre-diabetes, so focusing on health risks related to blood sugar made sense. But for most of us, there are other things to consider at mealtime.

Additionally, the study doesn't explain the differences in the participants' microbiomes, or the mechanisms by which these differences came about—or how they might help or hurt bread digestion. It only acknowledges that there is some difference between the microbes in a wheat-loving body and one that does better on white bread.

In other words, like most nutrition studies, this shouldn't change what's on your plate. Don't move away from a diet of whole foods to one of more processed foods. What the study does suggest, however, is that if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic and notice that certain nutrient-rich foods causes your sugar levels to spike, you might be better off avoiding them and finding other, also nutrient-rich foods that don't send your sugar levels soaring.
