 Nutrition for PETS!

Best  Pet Supplements for your furry family member's health

Just like people, pets thrive on proper nutrition.  In actuality, veterinary nutrition science is far advanced from that of humans and indeed, many breakthroughs in human nutrition emanate from verterinary clinical research and practice.

Most people do not prepare their pet's food.  I have for years.  Second, veterinary quality nutritional support is not readily available to laypersons.  We are pleased to offer you some of the best nutritionals to support your pet's optimal health.  Here are a few items I have used both personally and recommended to clients for years.  They are available in our store right here.  We offer free shipping on all orders and volume discounts on these FRESH products.

Multiples for cats and dogs

Again, just like us, cats and dogs require a good multiple formula to help them meet and balance their diets.  It is even more important if you feed commercial foods.  For cats and dogs, I like to see a whole food supplement with superfood like spirulina, omega 3's, flaxseed meal for fiber, and powerful antioxidants such as turmeric.  Detoxifiers like dandelion and yucca as well as basic vitamins and minerals are important as well.  One such product is nutritional support for cats and dogs.  It is one product that can be given to cats and dogs and one that they readily accept.  Read more here

Urinary Health

Cats and fewer dogs seem to experience urinary tract irritation.  Sometimes this is diet related, other times it is how they are born. Like people, cranberry extract supports urinary tract health in both cats and dogs.

PROBIOTICS

Your pet may need a probiotic especially if they have recurrent infections, allergy or skin problems.  You may also need to change their diets.  Just a tiny amount like 1/8 teaspoon of Rxbiotic contains high levels  of good bacteria PLUS accoutrements to get them to grow.

Joint Concerns

Dogs are prone to joint problems. Some breeds much more so than others.  We have had great results with Glycoflex by VS.  One half tablet can also be used as a preventative.  NEVER exercise your dog on streets or asphalt.  They won't complain but in no time their connective tissue will.

Emotional Problems

I love Rescue Remedy for cats and dogs!  High strung animals respond even faster than people.  A few drops in their water bowl can change stress levels in time.  RR can also be used for acute situations like vet visits or travelling.

Some of you know skin health is very sensitive to diet, but most of you will be surprised at some of the newest findings!

Sweets even “healthy”chocolate:   Sweets make various skin conditions worse. A study conducted in the Netherlands, suggests that chocolate increases production of interleukin -1b, a marker of immune system inflammation, which increases the inflammation due to acne. Chocolate might increase production of interleukin 10, lowering immune function and creating an optimal condition that allows bacteria to proliferate.   Inflammation is also at the heart of many other common skin troubles.

Carbs and sugars: No one has acne in Papua , New Guinea! It is a fact that people there eat low glycemic foods, and avoid stuff like BREAD.  Increased insulin levels due to carb ingestion causes the skin to secrete MORE sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne-causing bacteria.  Excess sebum also can clog pores, and create red inflamed skin or even Rosacea.

Whole grains and fruits:  Gluten can and will create inflammation if you are sensitive and will initiate an immune response that can result in acne and other skin problems  Substituting fruits for other high sugar foods will also worsen skin, cause infection and wreak havoc with the immune system.  Excess  sugar in any form also ages skin prematurely.  It literally breaks down collagen much the way sun damage does.

Dairy: Growth factors present in dairy foods can function similarly to insulin and also increase sebum production. Dairy is also a common sensitivity and/or allergen for many people which increases inflammatory responses and damages the skin.  Lactose is a sugar and if one cannot process the sugar properly it will build up in the system causing skin and digestive inflammation.

Soy and other food allergens. Soy, nuts and seeds are other highly reactive foods that can create an immune reaction and inflammation that create skin inflammation and immune problems. Also, Vegans and vegetarians can over emphasize Soy and Dairy in their diets, taking in far too much and actually becoming intolerant and reactive to those foods over time.

Fruited yogurts, dried fruits, granola, trail mix:  These common,”healthful snacks “actually contain more sugar than a candy bar. Sugar literally breaks down your proteins, creating advanced glycation end products, appropriately called AGEs that creates both wrinkles and sagging.

Junk foods: It should not be surprising that foods lacking in nutritional value are not good for your skin. Negative nutrient foods like  Big Macs or french fries, supply nothing of nutritive value  and actually create  free radicals which damage skin much as excess sun exposure does.  Fast foods and processed chemically laden foods  are also empty in nutrients but high in sodium and calories and can create a puffy eyed appearance. Replace high sodium, processed foods with natural, unprocessed whole foods.  High fat, fried foods even nuts will increase inflammation if over consumed.

Alcohol: Any type of alcoholic beverage dehydrates the skin and makes skin look older and dry.  Try to get two liters a day of mineral water for fresher looking skin.  Alcohol is also pure sugar weakening the immune system which excaberates conditions like psoriasis and eczema, acne and rosacea.

Caffeine: Caffeinated beverages will have the exact same dehydrating effect as alcohol.  If your beverages contain sugar it is even worse!

Did you know that over one THOUSAND bacteria may live on the skin surface???  Find out what this means to you.  Reg here to stay apprised of this and other breaking health articles that will be published right here.

Hope you are not falling behind like me!  We have been deluged with people to help, and additionally I lost my IT network at home two weeks ago... Hopefully I'll be able to work from home again soon.  Additionally, have had some real challenges with ATT....so will try to catch up.

I have posted our November activities which look to be amazing.

Just a few thoughts on the time change tonite, and it's health ramifications.  Falling behind does not have the same consequences as Daylight Savings in the spring.  There are a few issues to be aware of:

There are a statistically more home and workplace accidents due to diminished visibility.  Adjustments take a week or two.

Some may have difficulty with sleeping patterns.  Melatonin  or Sleep Factors can help regulate that if used for a two week period.

Sleep deprived as this world is most of you will benefit from the extra shuteye.

For those who struggle with SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder, falling behind may herald the beginning.  Light therapy, natural supplements, and scheduling exercise, and errands earlier in the day may help.

We shall be giving thanks all month to our clients so stop in for a free skin product sample.

Picture compliments of Seattledogspot.com  Thank you.

As important as natural skin rejuvenation is,  I think this topic is even more important this week, especially for us dog and cat lovers.

Almost 4,000 dogs and 10 cats have been sickened in the U.S. since 2007 with jerky-treat related illnesses, resulting in the deaths of 600 pets.

The dog treats in question are sold as jerky tenders or strips made of chicken, duck, sweet potatoes and/or dried fruit.

Most of the suspected jerky products were manufactured in China, and  pet foods  companies are not legally required to list the country of origin for each ingredient in their products.

"This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered," veterinarian Dr. Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a formal statement.

The FDA is now contacting both pet owners and veterinarians around the country, urging them to contact the agency if they observe suspicious cases by calling the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator in their state.

Symptoms  include decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increased water drinking, and increased urination within hours of eating the treats.

About 60 percent of cases involved gastrointestinal illness, and about 30 percent involved kidney and urinary systems. Severe cases may present with kidney failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, and a rare kidney disorder.  The rest involved a variety of symptoms, such as collapse, convulsions or skin issues.

The FDA also issued letters to veterinary clinics across the country urging them to contact  pet owners and send in any materials that might help with the investigation.

In some cases, vets will be asked to send in an animal's blood, urine and tissue samples for testing, with the owner's consent.

The FDA's latest warnings are no surprise to Dr. Karl Jandrey, an assistant professor and board-certified clinical and emergency medicine veterinarian at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in California.

His hospital has been telling pet owners since the initial outbreak  to avoid all jerky treats, because it is unknown which ingredients in the products are causing the illnesses, or which products are affected.

The FDA urges owners to be cautious and stop giving treats immediately if a pet becomes sick after eating them, and place the container in a sealed bag for analysis.

Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible at the first sign of any issue. That will not only help the investigation, but could save your pet's life.

Since 2011, the FDA has tested more than 1,200 jerky pet treat samples, working with laboratories across the country. The agency is also working with regulators and scientists in China to search out a cause.

A number of chicken jerky products were removed from the market in January 2013 after a New York State lab reported finding evidence of up to six drugs
in certain jerky pet treats made in China, including antibiotics.

The FDA has stated, levels of  drugs were low and it's unlikely that they caused the illnesses but incidents declined when products were removed from the market.

There have been other outbreaks in recent years involving pet food.  These include a 2006 outbreak linked to a mold called in aflatoxin naturally occurring in peanuts resulting in deaths and a 2007 pet health scare linked to melamine that resulted in more than 4,000 pet deaths.  The FDA has said that this outbreak is quite mysterious as to its cause.

The FDA has more information for pet owners in this fact sheet.  Please contact them at FDA.gov for further information or to report any unusual activitity.

According to Ayurveda, every living organism is controlled and governed
by three major life forces known as the tri doshas. The tridoshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and all physical and mental disorders occur when these three doshas lose their unique balance in the body. Vata governs our nervous systems and Pitta is the energy for the body's internal functions. Kapha regulates the heat and biological processes of the body as well as influencing the secretion and formation of body fluids. When one of these doshas become either high or low, disorders begin to occur and the first order of priority is bringing these elements back in balance.

Let's take a little closer look at the doshas:  Which one are you???

Vata

Although air and space sound like the same thing, they are really very different. Space signifies an emptiness, and air is what fills up the space. Vata governs the nervous system. Without it, nothing would move in your body. Vata is the only dosha that moves. It makes your heart pump, muscles twitch and, your blood flow, and it is responsible for all those interesting and embarrassing bodily noises. Vata primary people are small-boned, prone to dry hair, dry skin and constipation. They are also creative, fast thinkers and talkers, and occasionally a bit spacey.

Pitta

This dosha is fire and water, but water meaning fluids like digestive juices, blood and bile. Pitta people are lean, athletic, competitive types and perfectionists. They are prone to infection, diarrhea, and "heat" disorders like ulcers and heavy bleeding. They are also very smart and quick-minded; they like things done their way and organized to their liking.

Kapha

Kapha folks are curvy and voluptuous, like Marilyn Monroe . Classic beauties are usually  Kaphas. Kapha's put on weight if they do not work out and eat sensibly. Kapha crave sweet and creamy things, which can be their downfall. They tend towards congestive disorders such as excess fluid in the lungs and body, impacted lymph tissue and oily skin. They are the most compassionate and easygoing of the three doshas. They also have the most physical stamina.

Ayurvedic herbs help to balance these types of energy.  I find it interesting how much has permeated into western formulas.  Some basic ayurvedic herbs and applications follows.

Amalaki is used to rebuild and maintain new tissues and increases red blood cell count. It is considered helpful in cleansing the mouth, strengthening teeth, nourishing the bones and is the highest natural source of vitamin C. It reduces pitta without aggravating vata or kapha. It is a one of three herbs used in triphala, the primary Ayurvedic tonic for maintaining health.

Arjuna is a famous cardiac tonic used in Ayurveda for a variety of heart conditions. Used to lower blood pressure and heart rate. Traditionally given to support circulation and oxygenation of all tissues. Often combined with ashwagandha, brahmi and guggul in heart formulas.

Ashoka is used in Ayurveda as a tonic for the uterus and is believed to help maintain proper function of the female reproductive system.

Ashwagandha has been traditionally used for general debility, sexual debility and nerve exhaustion. It also is said to regenerate the hormonal system, promote healing of tissues, and support sound sleep. It is considered the primary adaptogenic Ayurvedic herb for its ability to build reserves for handling stressful conditions.

Bacopa assists in heightening mental acuity and supports the body's ability to relax. It is used in formulas for mental exertion.

Bhringaraj is considered helpful in premature graying of hair, balding , alopecia, loss of teeth, enlargement of liver or spleen, chronic hepatitis, anemia and skin diseases. It is a rejuvenative for pitta. Also available in oil form.

Bibitaki is used as a laxative to cleanse the bowels. It is also used as a gargle for sore throats because of its heating and soothing properties. It is a one of three herbs used in triphala, the primary Ayurvedic tonic for maintaing health. It is considered a powerful tonic for excess kapha.

Bitter Melon has been shown to regulate the body's ability to process sugars by suppressing the neutral response to the stimuli of sweet tastes. For control of blood sugar levels also see shardunika ( gymnema) and chandraprabha. Our DB-7 uses ayurvedic herbs in it's formula to balance blood sugars.

Boswellia has been used extensively in Ayurveda for joint support. Along with its cousin guggul, it offers broad health and immunomodulating benefits for arthritis sufferers. It is used with other ayurvedic herbs in our Arth-9 Formula.

Brahmi has been traditionally used for nervous disorders, epilepsy, senility, premature aging, hair loss, obstinate skin conditions and venereal diseases. It is considered the primary Ayurvedic nerve and cardiac tonic. It pacifies high vata or pitta. Also available in oil form.

Chitrak is a pungent herb used to improve digestion and remove toxins from the GI tract.

Chyavanprash is a famous herbal jam made from amalaki fruit, one of the highest sources of vitamin C. It is fortified with over 20 herbs to rejuvenate and strengthen the immune system.

Garcinia contains biologically active phytochemicals such as hydroxycitric acid and antioxidants. Supports normal appetite levels and metabolism and storage of carbohydrates and fats to maintain normal body weight. A key ingredient in LeanCare

Gokshura* is a rejuvenating herb used in Ayurveda to support proper function of the urinary tract and prostate.

Guduchi is a considered a bitter tonic and powerful immuno-modulator. It is regarded as a blood purifier and liver protector. It is considered helpful in eye disorders and promotes mental clarity. It balances high pitta conditions.

Guggul (aka guggulu) A gum resin, historically used for its antiseptic and deep penetrating actions in the treatment of elevated blood cholesterol and arthritis. Often used as a carrier and combined with other herbs to treat specfic conditions (see Kaishore Guggulu, Yograj Guggulu, Goksuradi Guggulu and Triphala Guggulu).   I use guggu lipid to help clients balance their cholesterol levels.

Gymnema is commonly referred to as "Gurmar, the destroyer of sugar". It is traditionally used in formulas to control blood sugar levels in the body.

Haritaki is used for coughs, asthma, abdominal distention, tumors and itching. It is a one of three herbs used in triphala, the primary Ayurvedic tonic for maintaing health. It is a rejuvenative for vata.

Kutki a bitter and pungent herb used by Ayurvedic practitioners to support proper function of the liver and spleen.

Holy Basil offers a wide range of health benefits, principally supporting the respiratory system.

Manjista is considered one of the best blood purifying herbs in Ayurveda. It is said to cool and detoxify the blood, dissolve obstructions in blood flow, and clear stagnant blood from the system. It clears high pitta from the system.

Neem is considered one of the best healing and disinfectant agents for skin diseases and anti-inflamatory for joint and muscle pain.It balances high pitta conditions. Also available in oil form.

Shatavari is traditionally used to support the female organs, prevent sexual debility, help menopausal conditions, stomach ulcers, inflamation and chronic fevers. It is also a primary rejuvenative for pitta.

Shilajit is a rejuvenative known to promote strength and immunity in the urinary tract and a primary rejuvenative for the prostate.

Can your Vision be improved by Natural Means?  Goodness Yes!  Here's how:
--

Eat Right for your Sight!

Start with diet: eyes require multiple nutrients, and tons of energy to function optimally.

Basic vitamins: Vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight.

  • Antioxidants, including beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, protect the macula from degeneration from sun damage. These antioxidants are abundant in dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Notice any color patterns here? New findings demonstrate that that consuming yellow and green vegetables can help prevent age-related macular generation, a leading cause of blindness.
  • Foods rich in sulfur, cysteine, and lecithin help protect the lens of your eye from cataract formation. Excellent foods high in these nutrients are garlic, onions, shallots, and capers.
  • Pro Anthocyanin-rich fruits such as blueberries, grapes, and goji berries have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision.
  • DHA is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, and cod. DHA provides structural support to cell membranes to boost eye health.

Exercise for better Eyes

Simple exercises, based on the Bates Method can help you maintain optimal vision and may also keep eye fatigue at bay. Perform these exercises first thing in the morning, before bedtime, or any time your eyes feel fatigued. Make sure that your hands are clean and that your mood is relaxed. Warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times.  Second: Look up and then slowly circle 10 times clockwise and 10 times counterclockwise.  Focus. Hold a pen at arm's length, focus your eyes on it, and slowly bring the pen closer until it's about 6 inches away from your nose. Then slowly move it back, keeping your eyes focused on the pen, 10 times in all.

Tech Support:

I prescribe flower essence support for technically challenged eyes...besides getting appropriate rest and taking breaks from screens they really help!

Common eye problems:

Fatigue/Myopia/Farsightedness:  Eye exercises are the solution
Floaters:  Chinese medicine, herbs acupuncture and some nutritional items really help!
Cataracts: Prescription strength natural eyedrops and antioxidant therapy as well as sun protection have been very effective at postponing surgery for some very motivated clients.  These also work for animals.
Allergy, eye dryness:  Depending on the cause, antioxidant therapy and eyedrops can make a huge difference in chronic eye dryness.  Chinese herbs can be invaluable in some cases.
Glaucoma:  Diet, stress levels, chinese herbs, and eyedrops have reversed early glaucoma in some motivated clients.

Can you believe it October is HERE! and so has all our new events....take a Looky.  Speaking of that next week's forum is SAVE your Sight...natural help for common eye problems. Do not miss it!  Some of our clients are saying they are not receiving their emails. We will no be sending them twice through different delivery means to try to assist.  We do not mean to be annoying.  This week's Topic is:

Plant Compounds Benefit GI Health-Longevity, Posted on Sept. 20, 2013, 6 a.m. in GI-Digestive Functional Foods

In that gastrointestinal (GI) health is linked to health of  the body's numerous other systems – from cardiovascular to neurological, Netherlands researchers investigated the role of polyphenols from dietary sources on the ecosystem of the gut.  Using an in vitro model of the gut  microbiology researchers assessed the effects of polyphenols from black tea and red grapes. The team observed that the black tea polyphenols stimulated Klebsiella, enterococci, and Akkermansia microbes; and that red grape extract stimulated Klebsiella, Alistipes, Cloaibacillus, Victivallis, and Akkermansia.  Submitting that: “The study shows that these complex polyphenols in the context of a model system can modulate select members of the human gut microbiota,” the study authors observe that: “Black tea polyphenols have differential effects from red grape polyphenols.”

What does this MEAN?  Well as we have practiced for years, microbes respond differently to different natural antibiotics.  This is why we are so adamant about testing and proper protocols based on client results.

If you are suffering from GI trouble visit us for a free consult locally or by phone or skype....you can also visit our GI aisle of our store.

Happy Haunting

The FDA's long awaited gluten guidelines are out and many say it is too little too late.  For one thing, some consumers and doctors are upset that the actual guidelines contain....GLUTEN.

Gluten content can only be 20 parts per million and this is on a par with other countries with strict gluten guidelines.New FDA rules now say that food marked “gluten-free” can't have levels of gluten that exceed 20 parts gluten per million parts of food. In addition, these foods can't contain rye, barley, wheat, or any crossbreeds of those items. According to most scientists this is the lowest level of gluten that can be detected and the new rule puts our gluten-free standard on par with those in other countries.

This is the first time the US has had  legally binding rules about gluten-free foods in place. These rules come along with new high standards for foods marked “sodium free,” “sodium free,” and “sugar free.”

There are three million people suffering from celiac disease. About 18 million are gluten sensitive. And then there are those who are going gluten-free for other reasons.

This is a $4.2 billion market. Expect to see lots of marketing activity and brand competition.

Now that there are official rules in place, there are likely to be a number of brands that will no longer be able to label their foods gluten-free without changing their recipe. And changing a recipe isn't as simple as adding an ingredient here or taking one away there. It's an expensive time-consuming endeavor. The only other option is taking their now not-gluten-free product off the shelf, missing out on the opportunity to be a part of this growing multi-billion-dollar market and the chance to market a product that's perceived as being healthy.

Also expect new foods to appear to capitalize on this new marketing opportunity.

Still, most gluten-free foods are highly processed and contain, to my mind unacceptably high levels of sugars.  I do not advocate most "gluten-free" commercial baked goods.

So the gluten-free (and sugar-free and sodium-free) markets are at a huge crossroads right now. Companies have a year to adhere to the new rules. At that point, supermarket shelves may undergo an overhaul.

Have a gorgeous weekend!

Wow, people do seem to enjoy getting tested medically or quasi medically.  They seem to relish the whole scientific method, forming a hypothesis, the testing process, getting a "working"  diagnosis and the like.  In fact, hundreds of  billions of dollars are spent on medical and alternative medical tests each year.

As any good clinician knows, a lot of testing is unnecessary.  A good history, exam, and eyeballing the client will lead to the proper conclusion over 90% of the time.  But people do love their tests.  I see many new clients who bring in a sheaf of papers of "screening" alternative tests:  allergy testing medical and alternative, adrenal profiles, hormone panels, candida antigens and no one has any idea what to do with them until they get to me and we get to work. On occasion, even conventional medical tests like the PSA for men are called into question.  In addition, even the very best of tests are only about 75-80% accurate, so it is important to choose a practioner with great clinical skills.  Some tests are downright quackery and live cell microscopy may fall into this category.

People are impressed with the images of their blood on a darkfield microscope and are given health and nutritional advice based on these images.   Often this advice is alarmingly similar, I've discovered.  Some of the "findings"  I've been hearing about are:

  • Excess protein in the blood
  • Fermenting RBC's caused by mold or yeast overgrowth
  • Bacterial mold toxicity
  • Basophiles in the RBC's due to latent allergies
  • Crystals in the blood due to excess proteins or leaky gut
  • Toxic infection of the RBC's
Unfortunately, none of these "findings" has any basis in fact or real science according to microbiology experts.  See quackwatch.com for details about this testing.
Upon the patient's findings, interventions such as expensive detox or cleansing programs are employed.  They may or may not involve colon hydrotherapy.  Expensive supplements are prescribed and people are asked to return frequently for updated testing and supplements.  Sometimes their symptoms improve for a couple of weeks due to the placebo effect but in time this wears off and the client is no better off and his wallet lighter.

When I was training in acupuncture in China we shared this anecdote.  If a westerner opened a clinic in China and gave the same exact antibiotic treatment to each person a few patients might be helped.  If an easterner opened a clinic here and gave the same chinese herbs to each patient a few people would be helped but most would not be.  There are two concerns with this testing: number one, people delay real exploration and treatment and get worse, they ignore important symptoms requiring medical treatment and get worse, AND they tend to become dismissive towards alternative medicine due to these experiences.

My advice?  Seek a reputable practitioner with a solid reputation in alternative care.  An ND or nutritionist has solid western training and knows when to refer out and also will have higher standards regarding testing using hopefully the scientific method AND experience to make clinical judgements.  Clients: STOP wasting your time and money chasing your symptoms for entertainment sake and sit down, commit and WORK with someone reputable. We offer a full range of functional testing right here at our store!
