Image and  historic information from Hippocrates.com

Hippocrates medical theories and conclusions are based on his data and research and demonstrated  that disease was a natural process; that the signs and symptoms of a disease were caused by the natural reactions of the body to a disease process; and that the chief role of the physician was to aid the natural resistance of the body to overcome the metabolic imbalance and restore health and harmony to the organism.

Hippocrates was born on the island of Cos, off the southwest coast of Asia Minor, or present-day Turkey, around 460 B.C.  His father was a physician-priest in the Asclepion at Cos, and his family could trace its lineage back to the legendary Asclepius.  Hippocrates lived a very long life and died at a ripe old age in the town of Larissa in Thessaly.

History of Hippocratic Medicine

Physiology and pathology theory within Hippocratic medicine was based on the Four Humors.  A united harmony between all four humors working in tandem was necessary for good health.

The Four Humors are:

Pneuma - the Breath or Vital Force, and the Innate Heat, which were suffused into the blood from the lungs via the heart, gave the blood the power to sustain life.

Hippocrates saw pepsis, or an orderly, balanced, harmonious digestion and metabolism of the Four Humors as being essential to all good health.  In disorders of pepsis Hippocrates saw the origin of most disease.  I must add that we are driven home this point time and time again in Naturopathic College.  Being an original thinker, I did not accept the tenets and wisdom of this truth until practicing for about three years.  Now, daily I see the truth that if something is awry with digestion, fix that first because EVERYTHING else will improve as well.

I have gleaned both personally and from thousands of patients that digestion IS the cornerstone of good health, and by this I mean good health in every respect, bodily, emotionally, spiritually and mentally.  Daily, I am fortunate enough to see people transformed completely by healing their digestion and restoring harmony to their bodies. This is why I chose to specialize in naturopathic treatment of digestive disorders.

While  Hippocrates' anatomical knowledge was basic his profound insights into human physiology and the soundness of his reasoning still stand.  His surgical techniques for dislocations of the hip and jaw were actually unsurpassed until the nineteenth century.

In therapeutics, Hippocrates saw the physician as the servant and facilitator of Nature.  This is also true in Naturopathic Medicine.  All medical treatment is aimed at enabling the natural resistance of the organism to prevail and overcome illness, to bring about recovery.
In treatments he prescribed, Hippocrates was very sensible, pragmatic and flexible in his approach, favoring conservatism and moderation over radical or extreme measures.  Bloodletting, which was much abused at other times in much of medical history, was used only rarely by Hippocrates, and even then, only applied conservatively.
Hippocrates placed great emphasis on strengthening and building up the body's inherent resistance to disease.  For this, he prescribed diet, gymnastics, exercise, massage, hydrotherapy and sea bathing.
Hippocrates was a great believer in dietary measures in the treatment of disease.  He prescribed a basic, light diet during the crisis stage of an acute illness, and a liquid diet during the treatment of fevers and wounds.
Hippocratic medicine was constitutionally based, so its approach to diagnosis and treatment was quite flexible.  As a holistic healing system, Hippocratic medicine treated the patient, and not disease.
Hippocrates was the first physician to systematically classify disease based on points of similarity and contrast between them.  He originated the disciplines of etiology and pathology.  By systematically classifying diseases, Hippocrates placed their diagnosis and treatment on a sounder footing.

Unfortunately, the current status has moved very far from ancient knowledge and wisdom of nature, those relationships and the body as a whole.  Instead, people have more and more "information" provided by more and more "experts"  and less and less wisdom regarding how things REALLY work in the natural world.  It is truly an obstacle in helping  so many of them.

If you glean just one thing from this article understand that there is NO health without proper digestion and assimilation.  A great diet, exercise and all the rest will not take you far with a digestive system that is not working optimally.  While it is not a simple process to remedy this, it is by far the most important health adventure you will ever undertake.

We have some great Forums coming for this month and beyond so I hope you will check our events!  Today's forum is about E cigarettes! E cigarettes are largely believed to be safer than traditional cigarettes. Is this in fact TRUE? One of my patients asked me this very question, and when I said I couldn't answer him intelligently, I decided to research this and to post in as a forum.  What I learned is quite interesting!

Firstly,  E cigarettes are recommended as "safer" cigarettes but in the context of temporary use as a smoking cessation tool not a subsitute. There may be some merit to this as studies show about 20% of users do quit smoking.

Recently though, the California Department of Public Health has deemed E cigarettes a public health hazard.

Here's why:

Studies have shown that formaldehyde a known carcinogen is present in E cigs.

A very recent study has shown that even one brief exposure to E cigs primary ingredient propylene glycol causes immediate airway changes similar to asthma in users.  It is unknown if these changes are progressive and permanent.

Another new study has demonstrated that e cigarettes raise inflammation in the body...never a good thing.

E cigs are unregulated by the FDA there are currently 500 brands and no one knows the content of them. There is also great variation in nicotine content.

Since no long term studies exist and lung tissue is unforgiving I would pass on E cigarettes.  For permanent smoking cessation try acupuncture instead.

How TOXIC is our water?, what is drinkable and healthiest amongst the thousands of options?...read further to find out!

  • Public water supplies in 42 U.S. states are contaminated with 141 unregulated chemicals for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has never even established safety standards, according to an investigation by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Tainted Tap Water Used by Millions of Americans
Another 119 regulated chemicals—a total of 260 contaminants altogether—were found by the environmental

group in a two-and-a-half-year analysis of more than 22 million tap water quality tests. The tests, which are required under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, were conducted at nearly 40,000 utilities that supply water to 231 million people.

    Pollution Threatens Tap Water Quality
According to a report by the EWG, the top 10 states with the most contaminants in their drinking water were California, Wisconsin, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Illinois—in that order. EWG said the biggest sources of contaminants were agriculture, industry and pollution from sprawl and urban runoff.

Utilities Need More Enforceable Standards for Tap Water
EWG's analysis also found that almost all U.S. water utilities comply fully with enforceable health standards once they are developed. The problem, according to the environmental group, is the EPA's failure to establish enforceable health standards and monitoring requirements for many tap water contaminants.

"Our analysis clearly demonstrates the need for greater protection of the nation's tap water supplies, and for increased health protections from a number of pollutants that are commonly found but currently unregulated." said Jane Houlihan, vice president for science at EWG, in a prepared statement. "Utilities routinely go beyond what is required to protect consumers from these contaminants, but they need more money for testing, and for protection of vital source waters."

  • Distilled water can be any kind of water that has been vaporized and collected, leaving behind any solid residues, including minerals. Distilled water has no minerals in it at all.
  • Reverse osmosis water has been forced through membranes that remove larger particles, pollutants and minerals. Reverse osmosis water is usually acidic2.
  • Deionized water has had ionized impurities and minerals removed from it but not bacteria or pathogens.
  • I don't know about you folks but I paid an exorbitant amount in taxes this week and I'd like to know how this is possible?  Where is the accountibility regarding providing necessities?
  • All that being said what is there to drink?

All of the above waters lack essential minerals that are necessary for good health. Mineral deficiency can lead to insulin resistance, migraines, high blood pressure, constipation and even heart beat irregularities!

Regarding purchased water...

The Dangers of Bottled Water

Bottled waters deserve some special attention because they are not always as pure as you might expect them to be.
Here are some reasons not to choose bottled water:

  1. Dangerous toxins from some plastic water bottles can leach into your water.
  2. Bottled water is often just purified municipal water and lacks essential minerals. (Brands like Dasani and Aquafina are cleaned-up city water.)
  3. Purifying, bottling and shipping water requires vast resources and uses more water than when you get your water from a pure source in the first place.

If you do you use bottled water, make sure you use reusable glass or plastic containers, and try not to consume ultra purified municipal waters in favor of naturally clean sources.

Mineral Rich H2O

The best water to drink is naturally clean, pure and full of naturally occurring minerals:

  • Well water comes from a hole drilled in the ground that taps into a water source. A pump brings it to the surface. If you do not have access to city water, then you would need a well.
  • Natural spring water flows up from a natural spring and is bottled at the source.
  • Artesian or spring waters come from a natural source but are bottled off-site and are processed and purified.
  • Mineral water could be natural spring water or artesian water, comes from an underground source, and contains at least 250 parts per million (ppm) of dissolved solids, including minerals and trace elements.

All of the types of water mentioned above have essential minerals and nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and sodium.

Minerals are important for nearly every function in your body, especially your adrenals. Mineral-rich water can be one source of these nutrients, but if you can't get these waters because of cost or your location, then home filters are an option.

Filters

Look for these types of filtration when you purchase filters or bottled water:

  • Absolute 1 micron filtration removes any particles that are larger than 1 micron in size. This filtration leaves minerals in water.
  • Ozonation is used by bottled water companies instead of chlorine to eliminate baceria. Ozonation does not change the mineral content of your water.

Remember that any filter is better than no filter, so even standard "pour through" filters like those from Brita may help clean up your water, can remove chlorine and improve the taste, but they also remove minerals.
If you are not getting enough minerals from water and your diet, then try a mineral supplement like our BioPlasma. This amazing formula is a concentrated nutritional supplement that can detox your body from harmful pollutants and give you the minerals you need to thrive.

Water is one of the most important parts of a healthy lifestyle, so make sure that you are choosing the best possible water, avoiding dangerous plastics, and getting enough vital minerals.

With 8 to 10 glasses a day of pure water, you'll have energy and vitality like never before.

Saying NO to GMO foods-No April Fool!

Late last Friday afternoon, March 20th, the World Health Organization (WHO) made the stunning announcement, declaring the main chemical ingredient in Monsanto's best-selling weedkiller Roundup – Glyphosate – has the potential to cause cancer in humans. This announcement should have citizens, parents and elected officials across the world very concerned, since according to WHO, glyphosate is used in more than 750 different weedkillers and is routinely detected in the air during spraying, as well as in water and in our food.

This comes after decades of misinformation by Monsanto and vocal GMO promoters, who have repeatedly claimed that both Roundup and glyphosate were perfectly safe, including such declarations that Roundup is “safer than table salt” and so safe, you can “drink it”.

Incredibly, because of the widespread adoption of GMO crops for food production, it is estimated that 75% of processed foods in American grocery stores contain ingredients from genetically engineered crops, such as corn and soybeans, that have been engineered to survive being sprayed with high doses of Roundup.

Alarming details in the new World Health Organization report confirm past scientific studies that point to real harm from the overuse of glyphosate.

According to the report, published in the prestigious journal Lancet Oncology, the main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup is linked to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and lung cancer in humans and there is “convincing evidence” that glyphosate can cause cancer in lab animals.

FoodDemocrcracyNow.com has furnished the above information and is asking us to take a stand for a less toxic food supply. Everyone who is concerned with this problem is urged to visit their website at: http://www.fooddemocracynow.org and sign the petition against use of these chemicals and current political attempts to outlaw labeling of GMO foods.
I truly believe we all have the right to choose what we put in our bodies and this information is vitally important.
I hope you will make your stand and support efforts to purify our food and water supply.
Thank you!

I appreciate activist, Sally Milow contacting me with the above information so I can pass it on to all of you and the 10,000 + people per month who read these articles.

Why is vitamin D so important to our health? Quite simply, it directly and indirectly influences most of what happens in our bodies everyday.

To understand, you have to shift your thinking a bit. Vitamin D isn't actually a vitamin. Rather, it's a hormone precursor that our biological ancestors made after sun exposure.  When exposed to UV rays, a chemical cousin of cholesterol in the skin converts to vitamin D, which travels to the liver and is changed to the prehormone calcidiol. Calcitriol (the actual hormone) attaches to more than 2,700 sites on the human genome, and it turns on more than 1,000 genes, prompting them to do their jobs.

Creighton University's Robert P. Heaney, MD, points out that vitamin D is a key part of the biochemical machinery that opens up our entire genome, so cells can tap into the vast information it contains. In a remarkable feat of biology, individual cells synthesize calcitriol, which then turns around to regulate those cells' activities. It's these fundamental roles of vitamin D that affect our risk for so many different diseases. In fact, says Heaney, “Vitamin D probably affects every disease.”

The evidence is particularly strong when it comes to vitamin D's role in resisting infection, maintaining bone and muscle, and reducing cancer risks.

 Cold and Flu Resistance

Most cold and flu outbreaks occur during the winter, when people have less sun exposure and lower levels of vitamin D.

In 2009 researchers analyzed patterns of deaths and disease complications (typically pneumonia) during the influenza pandemic that raged through the United States in 1918 and 1919, killing at least one-half million people. The researchers reported that the fewest flu deaths and complications occurred in southern cities, where the sun shone brighter throughout the year and, presumably, people had higher vitamin D levels. In contrast, the most deaths occurred in northern cities, where there was less sun exposure.

Granted, this association doesn't prove cause and effect, but it's certainly suggestive, and other evidence does support the protective role of vitamin D. Over the 2008–2009 winter months, doctors gave 1,200 IU of vitamin D daily to Japanese school children. Compared with children getting placebos, those taking vitamin D were 42 percent less likely to contract the flu and 83 percent less likely to suffer asthma attacks.

A lot of other studies support this analysis.

The underlying mechanisms are now understood. Numerous immune compounds depend on vitamin D, including PCL-gamma1, a molecule that activates immune cells so they're capable of fighting infections. In addition, lung cells are among those that secrete 1a-hydroxylase, an enzyme that converts inactive vitamin D to its active form, helping fight respiratory infections. The vitamin D then turns on genes involved in immunity and boosts levels of cathelicidin, a powerful germ-fighting compound.

Stronger Bones and Muscles
Vitamin D has long been recognized as essential for normal bone formation, largely because it is essential for proper calcium utilization. Numerous studies have shown that the majority of seniors hospitalized for hip fractures are deficient in vitamin D.

But the problem is NOT just weak bones. Heike Bischoff-Ferrari, MD, of University Hospital in Zurich, and others note that weak muscles lead to falls and broken bones. The argument has its merits. Vitamin D is needed for normal muscle production and strength, and a lack of the vitamin leads to muscle weakness, a reduced range of motion, and increased physical frailty. With each passing year, seniors are more likely to be affected by sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle, along with osteoporosis. After analyzing 20 studies, which included more than 44,000 patients, Bischoff-Ferrari wrote in Osteoporosis International that 1,800 to 4,000 IU of vitamin D could greatly reduce the risk of falls in seniors. In contrast, the IOM only recommended only 600 to 800 IU daily.

Lowered  Cancer Risks

WAY back in 1980 epidemiologists reported that low vitamin D levels were associated with a greater risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Since then, researchers from around the world have linked low vitamin D levels to a higher risk of breast, ovarian, kidney, pancreatic and aggressive prostate cancer.

Would vitamin D supplements or greater sun exposure help protect against these cancers? The answer is yes, according to research by Cedric F. Garland, DrPH, of the University of California, San Diego.

Garland and his colleagues calculated that the incidence of colon cancer in the United States and Canada could be cut in half if people took 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily, and that women would reduce the incidence of breast cancer by half if they took 3,500 IU of vitamin D daily

How Much Should You Take?

So all this comes back to the questions: Should you take vitamin D? And if so, how much? Here's the best advice culled from experts.

• The ideal approach is to ask your doctor for a vitamin D blood test, which will eliminate the bulk of the guesswork — but not all of it. I recommend getting an entire micronutrient chemistry panel for two reasons, it is usually cheaper than a stand alone D and it gives ALL nutrients across the board so I can balance blood chemistries. Then with those results and because of individual differences in absorption and use, people may need to take differing quantities of vitamin D to achieve a healthy blood level. Make sure your doctor orders a “25-hydroxy vitamin D” test. Other tests might result in a false normal. Although levels below 30 ng/ml indicate a deficiency, many physicians are not up to date with the research on vitamin D and believe that this level is just fine. The optimal level is at least 40 ng/ml and perhaps 50 ng/ml, says Heaney. But higher amounts, within reason, may be even better. Surfers, lifeguards and people who spend a lot of time outdoors typically have levels of 70 to 90 ng/ml.

• If you don't currently have a significant deficiency, and if during the summer you spend a lot of time in the sun, with at least your arms and legs exposed, and you are not always slathered with sunscreen, you probably don't need to take vitamin D supplements. Holick, who wrote The Vitamin D Solution (Hudson Street Press, 2010), suggests getting approximately 10 minutes of sun exposure (depending on time of day, season, latitudinal location and skin pigmentation) before applying sunscreen. Vitamin D made from the sun actually lasts longer in the body, compared with vitamin D from supplements or foods (also note that with the exception of wild salmon and shiitake mushooms most foods do not provide much vitamin D.

• If it's fall, winter or early spring, and you don't get much sun exposure, or if you know you are D-deficient, you should definitely take vitamin D supplements (I recommend vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol). Your need will be greater if you are north of the latitude of Atlanta, since you will make little if any vitamin D from sun exposure during the months of November through March.

• If you have not taken a vitamin D blood test and you're looking for general guidelines, Holick suggests that children take 1,000 to 2,000 IU and adults take 2,000 to 3,000 IU daily. “The bottom line for me is that there is probably no evidence that these amounts pose any risk,” he says. Cannell's recommendation: Don't drive yourself crazy with all the qualifications. “Just take 5,000 IU a day, unless you're going outside to work or to the garden or beach.” The higher amount might be particularly helpful for people with a chronic illness, such as fibromyalgia, arthritis or lupus, adds Hunninghake. “These high doses of vitamin D, while generally safe, should be monitored with follow-up blood level [tests],” he says.

And what of the risks? For most people, vitamin D toxicity occurs after taking more than 40,000 IU daily for months, says Cannell. So as long as you're being moderate in your intake, don't worry about it but it is important tobe tested again as some people jump quickly with D supplementation.

Gut Bacteria Image: Shutterstock

Human gut microbiology, comprised of several trillion bacteria living in the digestive tract, is gaining recognition as a contributing factor to not only  Digestive Illness and dysfunction, but  also cardiovascular, immune, and neurological.  Now,  Leo Galland, MD from the Foundation for Integrated Medicine (New York, USA), reports  the  relationship between the proteins produced by intestinal bacteria and the human central nervous system.  Dr. Galland author of this paper as well as the 4 Pillars of Healing submits there are various mechanisms through which the microbiome can influence the brain: by stimulating and over-stimulating the immune system, producing neurotoxic agents, releasing hormones or neurotransmitters identical to those made by the human body, or through direct neuronal stimulation that sends signals to the brain.

Dr. Galland concludes that “Through these varied mechanisms, gut microbes shape the architecture of sleep and stress reactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. They influence memory, mood, and cognition and are clinically and therapeutically relevant to a range of disorders, including alcoholism, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and restless legs syndrome. Their role in multiple sclerosis and the neurologic manifestations of celiac disease is being studied,” the author posits that: “Nutritional tools for altering the gut microbiome therapeutically include changes in diet, probiotics, ad prebiotics.”

I have personally observed all the above connections for several years in my clinical practice.  Brain "fog", fuzzy thinking, poor sleep and many other like symptoms mysteriously clear up when gut bacteriology is addressed and treated.  Surely, most people will benefit hugely from this medical intervention.  For more information, visit our testing aisle  of my Natural Pharmacy, or by all means contact us to set up a free consultation pertaining to my specialty.

Many people think of Tylenol as a harmless necessity  for pain relief. Recently, Dr. Laura Markham, PhD did some research which was published recently on a Wellness site.

Her findings?  Tylenol/Acetaminophen is absolutely toxic to the human body. It causes liver poisoning. Did you know that the analgesic effects of the drug emanate from the liver's attempt to fight the drug by releasing enzymes to break it down? Most people do not. A liver that is not healthy or  one that is overwhelmed by other toxins (such as alcohol), or that has not been sufficiently fueled by food intake, can become overwhelmed and fail, leaving  poison in the body causing organ damage and even death.

She also reports the danger is that there isn't much difference between a safe, effective dose, and a toxic dose.  Dr. Markham states that just a doubling of the maximum daily dose can be enough to kill, according to Dr. Anne Larson of the University of Washington Medical Center. Also, if you have no food in your stomach, or if you have alcohol in your system, or worse yet, both,  the normal dosage can be toxic because of the overload to the liver.

Acetaminophen (the active ingredient in tylenol) accounts for 100,000 calls to poison control centers, 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths annually. The Tylenol company has a alot of educational material on their website pertinent to taking the drug safely but can this be done?

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that even at recommended doses, acetaminophen can cause organ damage. Out of 106 patients in the study, 39% who took acetaminophen showed increases in liver enzymes to more than three times the normal upper limit, indicating potential liver damage. Another 25% of the patients had enzyme levels at five times the normal level, while 7% of the patients' enzyme levels increased to eight times the normal level! Their enzyme levels continued to increase for up to four days after the acetaminophen was stopped, and their enzyme levels did not return to normal for as long as 11 days, researchers said.

"This study shows that even taking the amount on the package can be a problem for some people," said Dr. William M. Lee of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, who was not involved in the study. Unfortunately, we all know people who take far more even that the listed dosage.

In a different study,  published recently in the Archives Of Internal Medicine, one in 10 women who took acetaminophen over an 11-year period experienced a 30 percent decline in kidney filtration function. The study showed that the more acetaminophen pills taken during a lifetime, the higher the risk of the drug's detrimental effects, indicating that the organ damage from even routine doses is cumulative.

This just in!  If you needed one more reminder from me about the benefits of yoga this might be it!

One condition that commonly increases with age, small vessel disease,  occurs due to microangiopathy of arterioles in the brain, making the arteries less flexible, interfering with blood flow. As a result, loss of motor coordination, including balance, as well as cognitive impairment may occur.

Now, Yasuharu Tabara, from Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine (Japan), and colleagues assessed 841 women and 546 men, average age of 67 years, for the ability to stand on one leg (eyes open). Subjects performed this examination twice and the better of the two times was used in the study analysis. Cerebral small vessel disease - small infarctions without symptoms such as lacunar infarction and microbleeds, was evaluated using brain magnetic resonance imaging.

Researchers found that the inability to balance on one leg for longer than 20 seconds was associated with cerebral small vessel disease. As well, the team observed that 34.5% of those with more than two lacunar infarction lesions had trouble balancing; 16% of those with one lacunar infarction lesion had trouble balancing; 30% of those with more than two microbleed lesions had trouble balancing; and 15.3^ with one microbleed lesion had trouble balancing. The study authors conclude that: “Postural instability was found to be associated with early pathological changes in the brain and functional decline, even in apparently healthy subjects.”etani E, Kido T, Ochi N, Nagai T, Igase M, Miki T, Matsuda F, Kohara K.  “Association of postural instability with asymptomatic cerebrovascular damage and cognitive decline: the Japan shimanami health promoting program study.” Stroke. 2015 Jan;46(1):16-22.

It has long been known that balance is a key factor for health and longevity and this may be the reason why. Inability to balance is a key symptom of deeper health issues.

A MAJOR risk factor for diabetes and heart disease, Metabolic Syndrome, also known as the deadly quartet is a condition involving  high triglycerides, low HDL-"good"  cholesterol level, high blood pressure, and high fasting blood sugar. It also is linked to overweight and now, gut microbes –  Bacteria that are indigenous to the intestine– and which perform many key functions in health: when gut microbiology becomes dysregulated it can lead to chronic inflammatory diseases; as well, An altered gut microbiota promotes inflammation that leads to Metabolic Syndrome.

Employing an animal research model, Andrew Gewirtz, from Georgia State University (Georgia, USA), and colleagues  observed that promoting healthy gut microbiota in mice can prevent Metabolic Syndrome.  The study authors observe that: “Expression of [Toll-like receptor 5] on [intestinal epithelial cells] regulates the composition and localization of the intestinal microbiota, preventing diseases associated with intestinal inflammation.”

This is unbelievably important news for many people concerned with risk of this disorder or who are already suffering from this disorder.  Please contact me for help with testing and correcting this underlying scenario. This is an exciting discovery and should lead to much better health prognosis for this population.

February would not be complete without an article devoted to heart health. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the US. Proper cardiac health is highly dependent upon one's quality of blood and uninterrupted and smooth blood flow. This can be achieved by proper  diet for your body,  a healthy exercise regime, and a harmonious balanced lifestyle.

Some herbs act as tonics which support the nourishment of the body  and more specifically to the heart.

Several  herbs are known to provide specific benefits to the heart organ and cardiac function. Here are my top choices.

Garlic (Allium sativum).  There is a reason that most cultures include garlic as an ingredient in their culinary preparations: the Egyptians are known to have found more than 195 medical uses for the herb! The Chinese too, value the herb to such an extent that one of their everyday teas is Garlic-based. Furthermore, several studies have shown that a single clove of garlic a day (which roughly translates into 500 – 1000 mg in powder form) is good for healthy cholesterol levels. Similar studies have also proven garlic to be a blood pressure normalizer.

Oregano.  Known for its ability to prevent and cure several ailments to a great extent, oregano is a rich source for controlling cholesterol  as well as providing dietary  antioxidants and fiber.

Antioxidants fight radicals and reduce inflammation (which are basically charged molecules capable of causing undesired chemical reactions) and thus help prevent heart disease, among other health issues. Oregano helps fight off inflammation inducing free radicals, and protect the heart against ‘bad' cholesterol (LDL). Oregano can be used liberally in food recipes.

Green Tea Green tea is  known for its benefits to heart tissue.. Cells that line the blood vessels in and around the heart are delicate, and consumption of green tea briskly improves their health, condition and performance. The 2008 issue of European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation reported that researchers have found green tea to improve blood vessel function within 30 minutes of consumption!

Hawthorn Berry  Scientific research provides evidence for positive correlation between hawthorn and blood vessel dilation, which lowers blood pressure. It thus leads to an overall stronger heart that can then function better, providing improved blood circulation and oxygen reach to the rest of the body. The component of hawthorn responsible for this chain of benefits is the pigment found in hawthorn berries, flowers and even its leaves, which contain strong antioxidant properties.

Hawthorn is also known for ensuring even distribution and effective use of Vitamin C reserves, protecting and improving the functioning of smaller capillaries and vessels.

Lavender.  Lavender oil is known for its abundant antiseptic, antibacterial and sedative properties. Its balancing effects help strengthen the heart's cardiac muscles, which improves contraction and relaxation of the heart's arteries and ventricles. Its sedative properties also help reduce palpitations and general hypertension. Anxiety is a true cause of many cardiac problems and it is important to get it resolved.

Chokeberry.  Otherwise known as Aronia berries and rich in vitamins A, C and K, chokeberries were found by researchers in 2010 to be beneficial for people with metabolic syndrome, patients who suffer from several health problems that increase the risk of heart disease. A rich source of antioxidants, it is known to significantly decrease blood pressure and LDL.

Ginseng.  Ginseng is essentially an immune system booster. Studies have provided promising correlations between ginseng and reduced blood pressure as well as reduced heart disease risk. Slight precaution is advised as ginseng increases blood pressure in some people. It is best to work with a practitioner before selecting ginseng for oneself.

Ginkgo (Gingko Biloba).  Gingko is more famous for its memory improving effects, but it is a powerful natural medicine for cerebrovascular disease. Ginkgo leaf extracts have been proven by studies to dilate vessels, thus leading to increased blood flow. It is also known to prevent and reduce congealing of blood platelets. Improved blood circulation to all major organs help reduce the risk of strokes.

Of course, these should be used as per your doctor's consultation, especially if you are already on other medication or prone to allergic reactions.  Green tea, garlic, oregano, as foods can be consumed liberally as foods unless your doctor has limited them.
