Coconut oil has previously been thought of as a “bad fat”, because  it contains saturated fatty acids. Recent studies have shown that natural sources of saturated fats are actually not only not "bad", but are beneficial, particularly for the brain. A new study, conducted at the Postgraduate Program in Cardiology at the School of Medicine, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, evaluated the health effects of extra virgin coconut oil. The study focused primarily on how coconut oil affects HDL cholesterol and a range of other measurements, such as body weight, size, and circumference.

Participants were all hypertensive-( high blood pressure), 63.2% male, with ages ranging from 54 to 70 years. 94.5% had blood lipid profiles indicating dyslipidemia and were taking standard cholesterol-lowering drugs. For the first three months, 136 participants were put on a standardized diet. For the third month and onward, the 116 who completed the first phase were placed in two intervention groups. The first group contained 22 participants who remained on the diet. The remaining 92 were put on the diet and given an additional 13 ml of extra virgin coconut oil daily (equivalent to approximately one tablespoon). The results at the end of the three months showed that the group of participants taking coconut oil saw a decrease in all six of the bodily parameters measured, including weight (reduction of .6 kilograms), body mass (reduction of .2 kg), waist circumference (reduction of 2.1 cm), neck perimeter (reduction of 4cm), systolic blood pressure (reduction of 3.3 points), and diastolic blood pressure (reduction of 3.5 points).

Participants also saw a 3.1 to 7.4 mg increase in HDL cholesterol. The researchers concluded that “nonpharmoacological interventions are essential for risk factor control in secondary prevention among patients with coronary disease. Our study showed that a diet rich in extra virgin coconut oil seems to favor the reduction of WC and the increase of HDL-C concentrations, raising with secondary prevention for CAD patients.”Coconut oil has previously been thought of as a “bad fat”, as it contains saturated fatty acids. As  a health food, I would certainly recommend trying one tablespoon of coconut oil per day.  One I like and recommend! FREE shipping!!!!

Can an attitude of gratitude brings major health benefits?

An attitude of gratitude can foster major health benefits according to recent psychological research from Northeastern University and University of California, Riverside.  By focusing on positivity, researchers have discovered that participants experience better sleep, better moods overall with significantly less anxiety and depression, greater happiness and long term life satisfaction, and kinder behavior towards others even family members!

These studies have also shown that feeling grateful results in less aggressive behavior towards others even when provoked and a “Pay it Forward” towards others which has far reaching positive ripple effects.

I would sum all the research up as major stress reduction!  Decreased anger, stress, hostility, lowered cortisol levels translates into better health, and less “angry liver syndrome” which can be so prevalent at the holidays.

How to turn on the gratitude in your life?  A few simple habits  help!   Each day start and end the day with 5 things you are grateful for.  When around strangers, difficult clients or family members make a point of noticing and commenting upon something  good or positive about them.

Frequently, perform random acts of kindness. Self esteem rises when people feel good about themselves and their behavior.  The only real joy in life comes from being kind.

What if you are just not feeling it?? Read Dale Carnegie's: How to Win friends and Influence People, or watch It's a Wonderful Life.  Either should help get you in the REAL spirit.

Skin rejuvenation via natural means is many thousands of years old.

Now modern research validates a lot of ancient wisdom and some new ingredients have made it to the shelves.  Which are most effective?

I have specialized in skin disorders since healing my own skin many years ago from some serious disorders.

I have also very recently begun a natural skin corrective brand which I am not actively marketing yet.  Still those rare clients who have tried them have been effusive in their praise of the results achieved.  I agree, you will not find better skin products anywhere.  They are truly skin changing in no time.  Today, I will discuss top ingredients to look for in anti aging products.

Retinol: This vitamin A derivative corrects lines, wrinkles, sunspots, sagging, crepiness, and more!
No wonder most skin experts agree retinols are the number one ingredient to look for.  By speeding up skin cell turnover while also boosting circulation to the skin.  Many products contain retinol.  My product NourishUP! contains the highest allowable concentration of retinol in a formula that contains also vitamins C and E which work synergistically with retinol and also marine extracts and peptides. More about those a bit later. Most retinol products should be used twice daily followed by a good moisturizer like PlumpUP! or BuildUP!

Vitamin C: derived from fruits, vitamin C reduces signs of photoaging by neutralizing free radicals. It also evens skin tone, and removes hyperpigmentation even sunspots in some people. A 20% solution like BrightenUP! or my serum is necessary to get these benefits. If using this it is also necessary to protect your skin with daily sunscreen which is a great idea anyway.  I like Climb On.
Kojic Acid: This natural acid derived from fungi, kojic acid has benefits like skin lightening safely without the side effects of hydroquinone.  It also has antioxidant properties and antibacterial properties making it beneficial for some people with acne. My Product LightenUP! Contains the highest allowable levels of kojic acid along with other

AHA/BHA: AHA's are derived from milk or fruit which BHA is derived only from salicylate.  AHA are exfoliators removing the surface cells of the skin which are helpful to dry skin, and can diminish the appearance of wrinkles.  BHA's are helpful for wrinkles also and especially unblock pores and clear up acne.  My ClearUP! Acne cleansing gel contains BOTH!  It has been wonderful for my clients with chronic acne.  It helps by reducing breakouts and then also resurfacing damaged dry skin, revealing new skin!

PEPTIDES: are strings of amino acids that penetrate deep into skin to address common aging concerns.  They are popular because they stimulate production of collagen hyalauronic acid and elastin.  These are natural components of skin that when depleted cause wrinkles and sagging.  Many of my products contain peptides of all kinds.  LineUP! helps repair and prevent expression lines while NourishUP! and BuildUP! contain peptides to accelerate skin repair!

I have small quantities of samples available so feel free to stop in for one, while supplies last.

New research indicates that regular use of this common over the counter type of medication can adversely affect a women's ability to conceive. According to Dr. David Silver a board certified Rheumatologist, "The mechanism of these affects inflammatory pathways that also play a critical role in the ovulation cycle and other stages of the reproduction."

As published in the the Journal of Rheumatology women who had been pregnant in the past as well as women who had never attempted to conceive were unable to become pregnant while regularly taking NSAIDs for arthritis related pain. After thorough investigation for alternate explanations, the women were asked to discontinue the use of their NSAID pain medication. In each of the case studies, women were able to conceive once they had discontinued the use of their NSAID pain medication

Objective. To highlight the possible association between infertility and treatment with long‐term non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drug (NSAIDs). NSAIDs act mainly through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase, the enzyme that catalyses the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are essential mediators of ovulation, implantation and placentation of the conceptus.

Methods. Case reports of four women suffering from severe arthritis, on long‐term NSAIDs and undergoing extensive investigation and treatment for infertility.

Results. During the last 2 yr, four out of five women with severe arthritis and difficulty conceiving were counselled to stop NSAIDs, and they successfully conceived shortly after the withdrawal of NSAIDs.

Conclusion. NSAIDs, used largely for the treatment of rheumatological conditions, may be responsible for some cases of infertility.

Discussion

Recently, a small number of cases of infertility associated with the chronic use of NSAIDs have been reported in the literature [24]. We present here four further cases of women seen in our lupus pregnancy clinic during the last 2 yr with histories of primary or secondary infertility. They had in common severe inflammatory joint disease and chronic use of diclofenac. Two had been submitted to extensive investigation for infertility, and discontinuation of the NSAID was followed by successful conception after 2–6 months. Conception was spontaneous in three cases and followed one cycle of IVF in the fourth case.

Patients with rheumatological complaints and  conditions and unexplained infertility should be asked about the use of NSAIDs before being subjected to extensive investigation or IVF. Reproductive failure due to NSAIDs is rarely reported, but its true frequency may be underestimated.  We have excellent NATURAL  solutions for pain...Curcumax.

Although most of my clients are on lower carb programs initially many of them and most of you I find are eating WAY too many carbohydrates.  It takes quite a bit of retraining to find a happy balance between NO carbs, and too many egatcarbohydrates.  Here are some signs you are eating too much:

Do you tend to gain weight eating even healthy carbohydrates?

Are you fatigued or sleepy after a meal with carbs?

Are you a sweet or starchy food craver?

Do you find it hard to stop eating carbohydrates or sweets once you begin?

Do you get irritable or light headed after skipping a meal?

Do you tend to turn to carbs or sweets to help with emotional problems?

Do you tend to gain weight in the face abdomen and upper body?

Do you turn to sweets or carbs whenever you fweel down?

Does your weight fluctuate?

If you answered “yes” to three or more of these questions, you may be eating more carbs than your system can handle or process efficiently.

To regulate their negative effects, FIRST remove  the sweet and starchy “white” and refined foods. If you've already done that, take it a step further. Try cutting back or avoiding all grains, including whole grains, legumes, as well as high-sugar fresh fruits. If you must have a treat, a small daily amount of low-sugar berries like blueberries may be okay for you — but you'll have to monitor how your body reacts to know for sure.

Then,  you'll need to experiment a bit to find the right amount of carbs for your body, and to find out how your life circumstances affect your ability to tolerate carbs. Stress, sleep, exercise, and other factors will all affect your carb tolerance, so you'll need to find your own balance.

A tip to help you:

Eat more green leafy vegetables and healthy fats. These foods will fill you up while providing you with vital nutrients. You'll have a better chance of finding your healthiest level of grains if you're also getting enough other types of food.

Exercise. You might be able to tolerate more carbs if you give your body the vigorous movement that it craves. A sedentary life and a high-grain diet burdens your body with the worst of ALL worlds.

Many people have issues with carbohydrates due to bacterial balance in their body. For more information of that follow this link.

Many of my new clients are a bit surprised when I ask them to stick out their tongues so I can examine it with respect to their health!  After many years of training in both naturopathy and also Chinese medicine, I have honed excellent diagnostic skills which gives me great insight as to what is going on with a patient.  While tongue diagnosis is a wonderful skill it takes many years of training and practice to master and is beyond the scope of this blog. Today, just for illustrative purpose I will discuss the most common tongue presentation and what it means.

A fissured tongue is the most common finding in an integrative examination of a client. A fissured tongue is also the most common oral finding in patients with psoriasis. Other names applied to the fissured tongue are scrotal or plicated tongue. Erythema migrans (geographic tongue) is often associated with fissured tongue as well.

Figure 1: Fissured tongue. Photo at left is courtesy of Alyse Shockey, ND, RDH. Photo at right is courtesy of Dr. Carolyn Bentley.

Additionally, certain medical disorders are associated with fissuring of the tongue such as Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) (consisting of a triad of components: fissuring, orofacial edema, and facial nerve palsy), Down syndrome, acromegaly, and Sjögren's syndrome. Electrolyte imbalances in saliva and mild hemolytic abnormalities have been noted as well (Eisen and Lynch, 1998). All of the above disease states can usually be eliminated as possibilities because of the strong clinical characteristics of each.

Intraoral findings: A chief complaint is that of malodor and discoloration associated with deep fissuring of the tongue due to the bacteria and food particles that become embedded in the grooves and cracks. The trapped particles may lead to inflammation and often cause discomfort/burning in the patient.

These more subtle patterns usually are noted during dental exams, and the health-care provider will offer reassurance to the patient that the condition is benign. In most cases, the tongue exhibits a central groove with smaller grooves radiating from the center line. Some practitioners view the fissuring of the tongue more as a sign of other underlying issues with the total body.

What do we know about the fissured tongue?

The literature suggests that the fissured tongue is relatively common. In fact, it's so common that it is not noted in many clinical exams. Both aging and local environmental factors may also contribute to the small and deep grooves that become noticeable.

A Holistic Approach: In Chinese medicine, the tongue is considered to be the window to total body health. A Chinese medicine practitioner will take a thorough lifestyle history, a medical history, and then the first element of the body that is examined is the tongue. Integrative medicine practitioners will link the tongue to other areas of the body such as the liver, heart, bladder, spleen, and intestines. Many such organs are associated with key areas of the tongue.

I usually advise patients regarding the status of the color, shape, thickness, and coating of the tongue with regard to their total health. I usually combine with pulse diagnosis.  A tongue details far more long term conditions than the pulse.  As with Chinese medicine and integrative approaches, the naturopathic practitioner views the tongue as exhibiting possible health issues that may need monitoring with regard to the total body.

If I encountered with a fissured tongue such as the example depicted in Figure 1. it would indicate to me that  long-term period of deficiency in the body similar to a period of drought over a mass of land had occurred. The ground will become extremely dry and start to crack. The tongue topography will look the same way. The deeper the cracks, the more chronic the condition of the tongue. The body is experiencing dehydration and long-term adrenal stress.

Typically, the tongue is swollen in this state and the pressure causes cracking. Usually swollen tongues will indicate digestive problems. Regardless, once the underlying issues have been addressed, the fissuring should begin to diminish. I have seen this often.

The color of the tongue is a useful tool for monitoring the improvements or possibly decline in a patient's condition. The tongue's body color helps determine chronic conditions, and the coating helps determine acute conditions. She correlates this with the patient who has flaming red gingiva vs. pale, pink tissue.  Flaming red tongues indicate heat in the body.  Mottled tongues will indicate which organs are being impacted by the inflammation.

I always counsel patients to address lifestyle factors that may be preventing the body's natural ability to heal itself.  pH, for one example is an important aspect in rebuilding and detoxifying the body. Since thiscondition has been chronic and has taken a long time to reach the current level found clinically, the patient must realize that the process of healing will take some time as well. She usually will suggest a "live food supplement" to make the content readily available to the body.

The most common items missing in the body are minerals, proper fats such as essential fatty acids (EFAs) and greens. The diet is extremely important, and the patient needs to increase fresh foods and water. Once the factors associated with lifestyle are addressed, the body will begin to heal on its own, and the fissuring will start to diminish.

Conclusions: Even though the fissured tongue is considered a benign condition with no treatment needed, the body is perhaps telling us something that needs to be addressed. Assisting patients in trying to determine some lifestyle changes that may be beneficial for total health is certainly something that we need to consider.

To heal conditions like this from a lifestyle perspective,  I am a firm advocate of decreasing your toxic world by cleaning up your environment and air quality. Many allergy sufferers will tell you that their health improved dramatically  when they removed carpeting, covered beds with "dust mite" proof covers, discarded old mattresses, and began to use a neti pot when needed to clear nasal passages. These factors often allow a patient to stop or reduce taking their daily allergy medications and begin to breathe clean air again. Dust and dirt need to be removed from our world, especially in areas where we sleep.

Then, fresh food sources instead of the processed foods that are commonly eaten can make a huge difference in our health. If you would not place an ingredient in your mouth, don't use it on your skin!

  • If the label lists more than five ingredients, you do not need it!
  • If your great grandmother would not recognize what you are about to eat, don't eat it!
  • Do not buy your meals in the same place that you fuel your car!
Get a GOOD diagnosis from people who know more than you do.  There is a reason experts exist....it is HARD to be objective about your own health and situation.  Call us anytime to find out what your tongue says about YOUR health!

Now food producers have completely stripped away your freedom to opt-out of eating genetically modified foods.

  • Chips and other snacks… full of GMOs.
  • Baked goods and packaged meals… they have GMOs too.
  • Cooking from scratch? You still can't get away from GMOs. They're in flour. They're in whole-grains. They're in meat. They're in fruit. They're in vegetables.

Do some due diligence... you will find that they are everywhere!

GMOs now exist in  even  healthy and organic foods: You've no doubt heard how grass-fed beef is significantly better than “normal” meat. Or how grass-fed beef has a superior taste and far more nutrition. And that's all true.

…Except now we have a bigger problem:

Grass has been genetically modified too! Cows will eat this grass, and big food producers sell the beef to you as “grass-fed” and “all-natural”. But, it's anything but that! The pesticides from the GMO grass accumulate in the cow, leaving you with toxic meat.

So what can you do? How can you stay healthy? How can you fight the damage these GMOs cause to your body? Well, let's talk about exactly how you can “undo” the effect of these GMOs.

“Eating organic” now just isn't enough!

Birds, bees, and wind spread GMO seeds and pollen miles away. These air-bourne seeds go on to contaminate other farm fields… even those farmed organically or without pesticides.

Just recently, researchers found genetically modified corn growing “intermixed” with heirloom, native varieties of corn in a remote village — high in the mountains of Mexico. The nearest farm that ever had any GMO crops was in a valley over 60 miles away!

In other words, even the safe foods we recommended you rely on… may not actually be that safe!

So if you can't fully avoid GMOs, you need to do something to counteract the damage they cause (especially in your children). You need something that ensures their bodies create new, healthy cells faster than the GMOs can destroy them. Superfoods like Acai, Chorella, Spirulina, and beet root are some common ones . Maybe you've even heard of some of them before. Anyways, these superfoods are packed with healthy vitamins and minerals.  Our Green's First product contains 49 different superfoods.  We have FREE samples in our office so please request some!  These foods help your body to detoxify these chemicals the moment they hit.  The second way is to grow an extremely healthy and proactive gut and immune system for the same reason.

What's great about this is that these superfoods guarantee your child gets the “building blocks” it needs to repair and replace cells damaged by GMOs.

If you're a mother, you know how just important it is for kids to get proper nutrition. And these superfoods are full of all the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, Omega-3 essential fatty acids, and antioxidants that…

  • Flood their body with energy so they can play, grow, and learn
  • Kick their metabolism into high gear (so they can keep up with other kids)
  • Sweep away the toxins in your body… leaving them feeling lively and alert

These “Superfoods” are great at what they do but there's even a better option.  This option is called YES!  According to the FES society this formula was developed during the Chernoble disaster.  According to Patricia Kaminski this formula results in an adaptive response to the various environmental insults we experience such as all forms of geopathic stress, residual effects of past exposure, dysfunctional immune response and allergic hypersensitivities of all kinds.  While no license to ignore your lifestyle, I do believe it can be extremely advantageous as an accoutrement to a great lifestyle in terms of mitigating the things we cannot control in the environment.  Daily usage is recommended for some time with then occasional use.  Let us know if we can help you with this or any other matter.  Best of Health!

GREAT NEWS: Beginning Friday September 11 we will be open from 2-5!  Please stop in and pick up a NEW product catalogue or product samples

Weary of expensive not to mention PAINFUL dental work? Dental health is also a direct indication of the health of your internal organs. Besides a beautiful smile, it is important to get to the root-- HA that again -- of various dental disorders. Naturopathic care can help strengthen teeth and gums naturally. With the application of specific dietary and herbal recommendations, loose and decaying teeth can be strengthened and healed. By practicing purposeful oral hygiene with a few basic ingredients, chronic dental problems can be economically resolved and your whole health improved naturally.

Dietary choices for beautiful healthy teeth!

A healthful diet is the first line of attack against both  gum disease and tooth decay. A chinese medicine known as pearl contains  ALL minerals such as calcium and silica  vital for repairing and rebuilding tooth structure. The herbs oatstraw, horsetail, and nettle are all excellent dietary sources of silica. Vitamin C, D, and K as well as Coenzyme Q-10 are also important for gum health and tooth strength. Vitamin C helps to support the collagen network of the gums. A deficiency of this vitamin will lead to tender gums that are susceptible to bacteria, leading to periodontal disease and tooth loss. Coenzyme Q-10 provides fuel directly to gums.  For foods that help to cleanse problem-causing plaque, focus on crunchy choices like celery, romaine lettuce, and seeds. Sesame seeds are especially beneficial for healthy teeth. High in calcium, they help maintain bone around teeth and gums. They are an ancient Chinese remedy as they bolster health of the kidney which is in charge of the structure of the body namely, bones and teeth. Soaking, dehydrating, and grinding the seeds further enhances the bioavailability of nutrients. For safer sweeteners that will not promote decay, use stevia and xylitol. Also, limit acid-forming foods such as citrus, coffee, chocolate, soda, and meat. Needless to say, all processed foods will weaken your body and therefore teeth.

Natural therapies for STRESSED teeth

Chronic inflammation of the gums is a TELLTALE sign of longterm gut ecology problems. It will be impossible to solve this problem without testing and resolving the underlying cause which is a bacterial imbalance in the GUT.  This problem will result in plaque regardless of diet, inflammation of the gums, and weakening of the tooth structure and bone due to improper assimilation of nutrients.  I encourage you to investigate this problem and resolve this health problem as it will lead to many more benefits over your lifespan.

Commercial toothpaste, including natural, fluoride-free brands, contain glycerin which coats the teeth and prevents remineralization. This weakens teeth over time, leading to decay and darkening. Baking soda and sea salt are both safe alternatives as is tooth soap.

Oil pulling can also be beneficial for some people

Deep clean teeth and gums with oil. Instructions according to Earthclinic.com:

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out.

Herbalists have long recommended certain plants and oils to nurture strong teeth and gums. By combining this wisdom with a dental-friendly diet, a healthy smile can be confidently restored.

Hi, I will post the article on natural tips for healthy teeth next week but I saw this and knew that many of you would be very interested in this obscure piece of interesting research!  We will pick up our normally scheduled articles next Wednesday!

According to a new small study by the Weizmann Institute of Science, children with autism might experience smells differently from children who have typical development.

Researchers say a smell test could help detect children with autism. "We can identify autism and its severity with meaningful accuracy within less than 10 minutes using a test that is completely non-verbal and entails no task to follow," researcher Noam Sobel informs us.

The study measured the sniff response of children to pleasant and unpleasant odors. Kids without autism usually adjust their sniffing very quickly - within about 305 milliseconds - while children diagnosed with autism reacted much slower.

No doubt this will prove interesting to many clinicians and parents hoping for a non invasive, simple way to identify children at risk.

Best of Health!

DRY, Brittle Breaking Hair...What to do about it!

DRY scalp, dry hair and hair breakage are often the first signs of hair loss and other health issues.

As a young child , and most of my life , I had very dry brittle hair, like STRAW that was fragile and would break. It just came out of my head that way.  It amazes my hairdresser and friends who have known me for awhile to see how luxurious thick  and healthy my hair has become!

Apart from many other possible causes, brittle hair may be a symptom of, or aggravated by, deficiency of certain nutrient(s).  This could be a direct result of the lack of the nutrient, or indirectly, when the deficiency causes conditions such as hypothyroidism, which leads to symptoms that include dry brittle hair.  It can also be a sign of chronic inflammation at the gut level. This I see most often. This was also my problem since I was given many antibiotics in early childhood.

The  most important hair, skin and nail vitamins that may therefore be helpful in the treatment of dry hair are tabled below, together with corresponding foods for healthy hair. Still be aware that almost ANY nutritional deficiency can cause dryness as a symptom.  It is therefore definitely key to get to the actual ROOT-no pun intended of the problem.

If dry brittle hair is also accompanied by dry skin, brittle nails or other hair problems, it could be a sign of overall nutritional deficiency.  This again is very typical of gut problems leading to multiple deficiencies of many, if not all nutrients.  This can only be remedied by proper testing, assessment and treatment b a specialist like myself.

What nutrient deficiencies can lead to brittle hair :

DIETARY ELEMENT | DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS | FOODS
Biotin   |
Biotin is recognized as one of the major hair, skin and nail vitamins.  It is often used in shampoos and other treatment for dry hair.  A deficiency of biotin can lead to brittle nails and dry brittle hair.

If you see it through, I am certain you will be very proud of your crowning glory!  Let us know if you would like to discuss your situation and treatment options.
