There's an important link between this one element and 40 percent of all the cancers diagnosed in the United States, health officials reported recently.   Two thirds of all Americans may be at risk...

That doesn't mean this new developement is causing all these cancer cases, just that there's some kind of still-to-be explained link, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Still, the study findings suggest that being obese or overweight was associated with cancer cases involving more than 630,000 Americans in 2014, and this includes 13 different types of cancer.

"That obesity and overweight are affecting cancers may be surprising to many Americans. The awareness of some cancers being associated with obesity and overweight is not yet widespread," Dr. Anne Schuchat, CDC deputy director, said during a midday media briefing.

The 13 cancers include: brain cancer; multiple myeloma; cancer of the esophagus; postmenopausal breast cancer; cancers of the thyroid, gallbladder, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, ovaries, uterus and colon, the researchers said.

Speaking at the news conference, Dr. Lisa Richardson, director of CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, said early evidence indicates that losing weight can lower the risk for some cancers.

According to the new report from the CDC and the U.S. National Cancer Institute, these 13 obesity-related cancers made up about 40 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States in 2014.

Although the rate of new cancer cases has decreased since the 1990s, increases in overweight and obesity-related cancers are likely slowing this progress, the researchers said.

Of the 630,000 Americans diagnosed with a cancer associated with overweight or obesity in 2014, about two out of three occurred in adults aged 50 to 74, the researchers found.

Excluding colon cancer, the rate of obesity-related cancer increased by 7 percent between 2005 and 2014. During the same time, rates of non-obesity-related cancers dropped, the findings showed.

In 2013-2014, about two out of three American adults were overweight or obese, according to the report.

For the study, researchers analyzed 2014 cancer data from the United States Cancer Statistics report and data from 2005 to 2014.

Key findings include:

  • Of all cancers, 55 percent in women and 24 percent in men were associated with overweight and obesity.
  • Blacks and whites had higher rates of weight-related cancer than other racial or ethnic groups.
  • Black men and American Indian/Alaska Native men had higher rates of cancer than white men.
  • Cancers linked to obesity increased 7 percent between 2005 and 2014, but colon cancer decreased 23 percent. Screening for colon cancer is most likely the reason for that cancer's continued decline, Schuchat said.
  • Cancers not linked to obesity dropped 13 percent.
  • Except for colon cancer, cancers tied to overweight and obesity increased among those younger than 75.

The new report was published online Oct. 3 in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Dr. Farhad Islami is strategic director of cancer surveillance research for the American Cancer Society.

He said it's "important to note that only a fraction of the cancers included in the calculation in this report are actually caused by excess body weight."

According to Islami, "many are attributable to other known risk factors, like smoking, while for many others, the cause is unknown. Obesity is more strongly associated with some cancers than others."

The World Cancer Research Fund estimates that "20 percent of all cancers in the United States are caused by a combination of excess body weight, physical inactivity, excess alcohol, and poor nutrition. The American Cancer Society is currently doing its own extensive calculation of the numbers and proportions of cancer cases attributable to excess body weight, the results of which will be published soon," he said.

My take is that being overweight is one of the unhealthiest choices people can make.  Decide to eliminate this health risk NOW. If you need assistance please contact us at 847-577-4455. Very few individuals have rich thick hair well into their senior years. Much science points to the decrease in natural hormones. Hair retention is most certainly controlled by your individual genetics, however there are other conditions that may influence the overall health of your hair. Your diet, the weather, toxins, pollution, and your overall approach to hair care influence your hair retention and health.

1.       Protein is not only a key ingredient to hair itself, but also as a progenitor of hair. Deficient protein in the diet can result in loss of hair, brittle or fragile hair, and loss of hair color. At least 45 grams of protein daily should be included in your diet: eggs, fish, lean meat, poultry, beans, tofu, dairy products.  Please note that many individuals need far more than this…

1.       Zinc deficiency can cause hair loss. Multivitamin or zinc supplements can go a long way to restore what it needs. Foods that are rich in Zink are:

  • Nuts: almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, and walnuts,
  • vegetables
  • fruits
  • leafy green salads
  • plenty of clean, filtered water

1.       Omega 3 Fatty Acids stimulate hair follicles growth and the sebaceous (fat) glands around them. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in:

  • flax seed
  • cold-water fish, such as salmon, sardines, and herring
  • yogurt
  • cottage cheese

1.       Laser and light therapy: Although the science is light and treatment regimens vary widely, many thousands of people are treated every year with varying degrees of success.

1.       Pills and potions flood the market-place, each one claiming success. “Buyer beware” comes into place here, look for real research, not just testimonials.  I have had success with several products and some Chinese Herbs to restore hair. In Chinese medicine, hair is linked to the health of the kidney. This is the root of the physical body.  Here are some products that I recommend though it will take a minimum of three months to note any changes:

Viviscal ,Pro  Hair Skin Nails, Alopecia Pills-FREE Shipping

1.       Shampoo: How often to shampoo your hair varies greatly; it depends upon your hair type and texture, activities in which you participate, and how often you use hair products. Oily hair requires more frequent washing and dry hair mandates less frequent washing. One must buy the right product for their own hair: curly, dry, oily, straight, artificially colored, bleached, etc. … Check the labels on the bottle, the formations do not vary much, but the ingredients in the better brands do seem to make a difference. Avoid shampoos with harsh ingredients, such as ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. Experts suggest that one can over-shampoo or shampoo incorrectly. The standard rules of thumb are:

  • Avoid using very hot or very cold water
  • wash your hair more than once a day.
  • Use only enough of the product to cover your hair.
  • Hair is three times more susceptible to breakage when wet, so don't dry vigorously with the towel.
  • Wait till almost dry before brushing or combing, preferably with a wide-tooth comb to detangle.

Other nutrient deficiencies and some illnesses such as hypothyroidism and anemias  can cause hair loss.  If you notice hair loss that is inexplicable come in for an evaluation or see your health provider.

1.       Conditioning: Experts seem to agree that conditioning your hair after shampooing keeps your hair softer, shiny, and manageable. They may disagree, however, as to whether a shampoo with built-in conditioner is as good as a separate one, and whether you should condition after every shampoo.

1.       Hair maintenance tips:

  • Get regular haircuts (every 10 to 12 weeks) keeps hair healthier and prevents split ends
  • Air drying is better than hair dryers
  • When using a hair dryer, start on low heat, avoid high heat for prolonged periods of time if possible
  • Change locations of hair pins and clips to avoid localized breakage
  • If you dye your hair, choose a shade that's within three shades of your natural color.
  • Avoid frequent hair color changes and stripping
  • Scalp massage increases blood circulation and may promote hair growth, as may essential oil therapy.

1.       Diet and exercise:

·         Heating a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables gives your hair all the essential nutrients – vitamins and minerals – to get healthy and stay that way

·         Things to avoid for healthier hair:

  • overconsumption of alcohol
  • low-calorie and crash diets
  • decreased thyroid hormone
  •  excessive stress

1.       Detoxification, if started early enough may make a difference to people who have been exposed to toxins and heavy metals. Blood and hair testing can reveal many surprises and therefore require many different solutions to detoxification and treatment which may lead to healthier thicker hair. Our TMA test is the best there is...

Should you get a flu shot??? If you go anywhere or listen to any radio, TV, or magazine ads you will be bombarded with marketing geared towards getting the vaccine but a new study may change things even though the vaccine debate will continue to go on for many years..

A brand new medical study conducted at the Ohio State Medical Center found that women who received flu vaccines had a weakened immune system response in subsequent years.

Lisa Christian, PhD, the lead researcher on the study, concluded, “Growing evidence shows that those who received a flu shot in the prior year have lower antibody responses in the current year.”

The study proves yet again that the far from offering bulletproof protection, flu shots may actually make people more vulnerable to influenza infections, which of course contributes to more people catching the flu and then falsely thinking they need more flu shots for “more protection.”

Yet it is the flu shots themselves that may lead to an increase in influenza infections. The flu vaccine, in other words, perpetuates the myth that flu vaccines are needed by perhaps ensuring influenza spreads more rapidly than would otherwise occur.

In other news, people who had a 2008 flu shot experienced a 250% increase in influenza infections in subsequent years.

·         A study published in Human & Environmental Toxicology found that mercury-laced flu vaccines caused a 4,250 percent increase in fetal deaths during the 2009 flu season. Traditional Chinese medicine is widely used as a form of complementary medicine all over the world for various indications and for improving general health. Proprietary Chinese medicines (pCMs) -- which are composed solely of Chinese medicines and formulated in a finished dose form -- are generally believed to be natural and safe, but a new analysis in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology reveals some serious dangers.

Various reports have documented the adulteration of PCMs and health products with undeclared agents, including prescription drugs, drug analogues, and banned drugs. Such adulteration of products can have serious and even fatal consequences.

To examine the problem, Tony Wing Lai Mak, MBChB, MBA, FRCPath, FRCPA, FHKCPath, FHKAM(Path), Chor Kwan Ching, MBChB, MSc, FRCPA, FHKAM (Pathology), and their colleagues at the only tertiary referral clinical toxicology laboratory in Hong Kong retrospectively reviewed cases involving use of pCMs or health products adulterated with undeclared drugs referred to the center from 2005 to 2015.

The investigators identified 404 cases involving the use of 487 adulterated pCMs or health products with a total of 1,234 adulterants. The adulterants consisted of approved drugs, banned drugs, drug analogues, and animal thyroid tissue. The six most common categories of adulterants detected were nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (18%), anorectics (15%), corticosteroids (14%), diuretics and laxatives (11%), oral antidiabetic agents (10%), and erectile dysfunction drugs (6%). Sibutramine, an anorectic that has been withdrawn from the market due to its association with increased cardiovascular events and strokes, was the single most common adulterant identified.

The sources of illicit products included over-the-counter drug stores, the Internet, and even some Chinese medicine practitioners. Importantly, 65% of patients experienced adverse effects attributable to these illicit products, including 14 severe and two fatal cases. Psychosis, iatrogenic Cushing syndrome, and hypoglycaemia were the three most frequently encountered adverse effects.

"These illicit pCMs and health products pose severe health hazards to the public," said Dr. Mak. "Previous reports of pCM and health product adulteration were mainly routine surveillance data or case reports/series with a small number of affected patients. The present study, to our knowledge, is the largest case series that reports an overview of the use of various adulterated pCMs and health products and the resulting adverse effects."  The take home lesson here is that most Chinese factories are not up to US standards when manufacturing these medicines. You must be careful in obtaining the best medicines possible from very good sources or through a trusted practioner who has had longterm relationships with the manufacturer and knows their standards for quality. I do not advocate purchasing these products through Amazon and other "dumping grounds" as they are often counterfeit products or confiscated products that can be detrimental to health.

Essential groups of bacteria are found less frequently and appear to be less diverse in the gut of patients with heart failure.

The gut flora in these individuals' stomachs is also less diverse than those found in the guts of healthy people. Data procured by German Centre for Cardiovascular Research scientists identified important aspects to help the medical community determine how gut colonization is tied to the development and onset of heart failure.

The Link Between Gut Health and Heart Failure:Scientists have long known that gut health and heart failure are connected. When heart failure occurs, the gut has a lower quality blood supply. The intestinal wall has more girth and is more permeable, allowing bacteria and other harmful components to seep into the blood. Scientists have also determined the composition of the gut bacteria is changed in an array of diseases such as type 2 diabetes. This information served as the foundation for the research conducted by scientists at the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research. This group studied whether and how gut flora alters in the stomachs of individuals who suffer from heart failure. How the Study was Conducted:The research group studied the gut bacteria in stool samples of healthy people as well as those who suffer from heart failure. The project was spearheaded by University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein Professor Norbert Frey. Professor Andre Franke's research team from the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel also contributed. They determined portions of the bacterial genome deciphered the differences in the microorganism. They also found a substantially lower proportion of different types of bacteria are present in the guts of patients who suffer from heart failure compared to the stomachs of healthy individuals. There is a reduction in individual families of bacteria that are particularly important. However, the researchers are uncertain as to whether gut flora is changed as a result of an individual's heart failure or if it is a cause of heart failure.

Important Factors That Alter the Health of Gut Bacteria: Gut bacteria is affected by an array of factors. As an example, a vegan who begins consuming meat will experience changes to his gut flora in about three days. This is precisely why those with extreme diets such as veganism, were not permitted to engage in the study. Rather, the researchers selected those with a standard diet made up of vegetables as well as meat.Aside from diet, gut flora is also impacted by medication. The study's control group took the same medicines as the patients who suffer from heart failure. Patients were not permitted to consume antibiotics. Those who took antibiotics in the three months prior to the study were not allowed to participate. Smokers were included in each of the groups. Each study participant was from the same geographic area and of similar age.

Cause or Consequence?

The reduction in families and genera of bacteria is indicative of heart failure. This is precisely why the study's results might spur new branches of departure for forms of therapy. The differences between individuals with heart failure and healthy people were spurred primarily by the loss of bacteria of genera known as Collinsella and Blautia. The differences also came about with the loss of two previously unidentified genera belonging to the families of Ruminococcaceae and Erysipelotrichaceae.

Additional research projects have shown the presence of Blautia offsets inflammation. The genus Faecalibacterium is tied to anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Yet the reduction is limited to patients who have heart failure. There is a theory that the gut flora allows for systemic inflammation as chronic inflammation accompanies heart failure. Perhaps an altered bacterial profile heightens the risk for heart failure.  More is being discovered daily about the role of gut bacteria and our lifelong health status. lyme disease treatment

A recent study indicates that this natural agent is more effective at combating Lyme disease than antibiotics. The study's results were recently published in the European Journal of Microbiology and Immunology. Lyme disease is particularly challenging to treat as it mutates in an unpredictable way. Traditional antibiotics are not guaranteed to generate a lasting cure for Lyme disease. This natural plant just might be a more effective and safer way to treat Lyme disease than conventional antibiotics and other treatment methods.

About the Study

A preclinical study conducted by academicians at the University of New Haven's Department of Biology and Environmental Science shows that Stevia leaf extract boasts strong antibiotic activity against the pathogen known as Borrelia Burgoderfi. This is the pathogen responsible for the onset of Lyme disease. The study determined that Stevia whole leaf extract proved effective against all known varieties of Borrelia Burgoderfi.

The CDC has determined that a minimum of 300,000 individuals are afflicted with Lyme disease per year. Antibiotics are currently used to treat the malady yet they are toxic and merely address superficial components of the infection. Stevia proves more effective in combating Lyme disease below the surface of the infection. Stevia excavates it from the system to the point that it can't induce harm.

The University of New Haven researchers compared an alcohol extract of whole Stevia leaf typically sold in the U.S. retail market to traditional antibiotics. Each treatment's abilities were assessed in regards to their impact on Borrelia Burgdorferi. Stevia stems from a plant with inherent phytochemical defense mechanisms that guard against infection. The consumption of Stevia transmits some of these antimicrobial properties to the human body. Stevia's phytochemicals likely include steviol, austroinullin, dulcoside, rebaudi oxides, B-carotene, stevioside and riboflavin that contain antimicrobial properties which combat pathogens. The purpose of these compounds is to prevent microbial infections.

The study's authors made it clear that upwards of 20 percent of Lyme disease patients are treated with antibiotics in the initial two to four weeks following diagnosis. Side effects from this course of treatment range from fatigue to muscle and joint aches and general pain. Some such effects lasted half a year.

Study Results

Stevia proved quite effective at eliminating Borrelia Burgdorferi spirochetes as well as persisters. Stevia sub-culture experiments and antibiotic treated cells were studied for upwards of two weeks. Stevia drastically reduced Borrelia Burgdorferi compared to antibiotics. It can be concluded that Stevia leaf appears to be quite promising as a means of combating Borrelia Burgdorferi. It is important to note that Borrelia Burgdorfer's most antibiotic resistant form (biofilm) actually heightened in mass when certain antibiotics were applied. Stevia leaf extract reduced such biofilm mass on collagen and plastic test surfaces by a whopping 40 percent.

A Word of Caution

It must be noted that the above-referenced study is a first. Readers should not interpret the results to mean that the simple consumption of whole Stevia leaf extract will produce superior results for Lyme disease treatment than traditional antibiotics. However, the study will certainly catalyze additional research on this topic.

There is no indication that Stevia can cause any sort of harm. The same cannot be said of traditional Lyme disease treatments like antibiotics. Those who are looking for an all-natural way to guard against the onset of a Lyme disease infection should give Stevia serious consideration.  Please visit us next week for a discussion about heart failure and  it's prevention. A brand new study finds that even if this device is turned off,  your cognitive capacity is significantly decreased just by having it nearby.

This research study, conducted at the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business has determined one's cognitive capacity is drastically diminished when his smartphone is in reach. It does not matter if the phone is in the on or off position. Cognitive capacity declines if the phone is at arm's length even if the device doesn't function.

About the Study

Adrian Ward, an Assistant Professor at McCombs, conducted experiments on about 800 smartphone users with the assistance of co-authors. They attempted to measure how well individuals complete tasks when their smartphones were within reach, even if the participants were not using the smartphones. One of the experiments involved the participants sitting at a computer and taking an array of tests that necessitate full concentration for a high score. The tests were then shaped to measure users' available cognitive capacity. This is a reference to the brain's ability to store and process data. The study participants were randomly told to put their smartphones face down on the desk, in their bag or pocket or in a completely separate room before the tests commenced. Each participant was instructed to put their smartphone in silent mode.

Findings

The research team determined participants who put their smartphones in a separate room outperformed those who put their smartphones face down on the desk by a significant margin. They also outperformed those who put their phones in their bag or their pocket. The findings show that the presence of an individual's smartphone decreases his available cognitive capacity. The phone's presence even impairs his cognitive functioning.

It is important to note that study participants felt as though they provided their full attention and focus on the matter at hand. The bottom line is that the more noticeable the smartphone is, the more cognitive capacity decreases. Though one's conscious mind is not consumed by the smartphone, the process of requiring oneself to not think about the phone ties up some of the inherently limited cognitive resources. This is commonly referred to as the “brain drain”.

Additional Study

The research team also performed another experiment in which they examined how an individual's self-reported dependence on his smartphone or how strongly he feels he needs the smartphone to get through the day affects cognitive capacity. Participants engaged in the same series of computer-based activities. They were randomly assigned to keep their smartphones face up and clearly visible on the desk, in a bag or pocket or in a separate room. Some of the participants were directed to turn off their smartphones.

The research team determined those who were highly dependent on their smartphones performed much worse compared to those who were less dependent on their smartphones. However, this only proved true when the smartphones were kept in their bag or pocket. It was determined that it did not matter if a participant's smartphone was on or off or whether positioned face up or face down on the desk. Merely having a smartphone within one's line of vision or within one's reach decreases his ability to maintain a focus and complete tasks. This is due to the fact that a part of the brain is actively working on not grabbing or using the smartphone.

Conclusion

It is not the distraction caused by smartphone notifications or other smartphone-related stimuli that impact cognitive ability and capacity. It is the presence of the device that diminishes cognitive performance. This is bad news for smartphone owners. It might even inspire some to revert back to those flat “dumb phones” that allow for calls and texts but lack web access.  Brain drain for sure...who knew that "smart devices" are getting "smart" at our expense?

Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors, which are widely prescribed to treat heartburn, ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems, carry an increased risk of death.

Heartburn drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been shown to be connected to an array of health problems such as dementia, bone fractures, and kidney damage. A new study performed at the Washington University School of Medicine indicates extensive use of such drugs is also tied to a heightened risk of death. Millions of Americans rely on PPIs for heartburn, ulcers and a variety of other gastrointestinal issues. These drugs can be easily obtained over the counter. They are sold under brand names like Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid.

About this Study

The research team studied the medical records of about 275,000 PPI users and upwards of 75,000 people who took a separate class of drugs referred to as H2 blockers that minimize stomach acid. The findings were recently published in BMJ Open.  H2 blockers and PPIs are prescribed for an array of serious medical conditions like esophageal cancer, gastrointestinal tract bleeding and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The data from the above-referenced data set was analyzed in-depth. A common theme emerged: PPI users had a heightened risk of death. As an example, when the researchers compared patients who took H2 blockers with patients who took PPIs across one or a couple years, it was determined that those who took PPIs had a 50% higher risk of perishing across the next half-decade. The average person assumes PPIs are safe as they can be obtained quite easily over the counter to treat heartburn and/or indigestion. Yet there are serious risks to taking such drugs, especially if they are consumed across extensive periods of time. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of these risks. This is a major problem as PPIs have quickly become one of the most commonly used drug classes in the country. As an example, about 15 million monthly prescriptions for Nexium were written in 2015.

The study's authors believe the combined side effects of PPIs might affect mortality rate. To determine if this is the case, the researchers sorted through millions of veterans' medical records within a database provided by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. They pinpointed over 275,000 individuals who were prescribed a PPI and more than 73,000 individuals prescribed an H2 blocker across a time span of October of 2006 and September of 2008. The researchers determined how many of these individuals perished and the exact date of death across a five-year period.

 Results

The researchers determined there is a 25 percent higher chance of death in the PPI group when contrasted against those in the H2 blocker group. The research team determined that for each 500 people consuming PPIs for a single year, there is a single additional death that otherwise would not have occurred. This is important as millions of people use PPIs on a regular basis. This massive scale means PPI use has the potential to cause thousands of deaths every single year.

The researchers also determined the risk of death in those who were prescribed H2 blockers or PPIs even though they did not have gastrointestinal conditions for which these alleged remedies are recommended. In such instances, the research team determined those who took PPIs had nearly a one-quarter increase in the chance of death when compared to those who took H2 blockers. This risk steadily increased with the amount of time people used the drugs. After 30 days of use, the risk of death in H2 blocker and PPI groups was similar. However, those who took PPI for a one to two years endured a nearly 50% hike in odds of death compared to those who used H2 blockers. 50% that is unbelieveable!

While these supplements are typically stereotyped as bodybuilding fuel exclusively used by gym participants,  McMaster University researchers have determined that those who take them on a regular basis in combination with other ingredients in the form of a drinkable formula significantly improve their physical strength. This is particularly true for elderly individuals.

The findings described above are especially important as senior citizens represent one of the fastest growing demographic groups. Muscle mass and strength decrease throughout the aging process. This process is referred to as sarcopenia. It heightens the risks for falls along with metabolic disorders that spur the need for help from assisted living specialists and centers. Elderly individuals who are not proactive in the mission to slow the progression of sarcopenia have the potential to deteriorate to the point that they find it difficult to complete regular daily activities like moving up and down stairs or rising out of a chair.

The Fight Against Sarcopenia Several nutritional ingredients are known to be effective in reducing or limiting the onset of sarcopenia. However, the McMaster University research team's finding is the first to show that a specific combination of ingredients is helpful to combat sarcopenia. The ingredient combination is: whey protein, fish oil, calcium, vitamin D and creatine. The study involved two groups of men. Each participant was at least 70 years old. One group took the nutritional supplement comprised of the ingredients listed above across six weeks without engaging in any sort of exercise regimen. The other group consumed a placebo. The goal of the study was to determine if the consumption of the supplement could spur gains in lean body mass and strength.

After the six week study period, subjects continued taking the nutritional supplement as well as the placebo while passing through an exercise training program that lasted 12 weeks. This regimen consisted of high-intensity interval training and resistance training. Contrary to popular opinion, most senior citizens ARE capable of performing such exercises.“We chose that combination of exercises to get a maximal benefit in terms of fitness and muscle strength,” said Gianni Parise, co-lead on the study. “I know many think older persons can't do that type of exercise, but that's simply untrue.”

The Results The researchers found improvements in overall strength as well as deteriorating muscle mass for subjects both prior to the exercise regimen and following the regimen. Consuming the supplement in the first six weeks caused a 700-gram lean body mass gain. This is equal to the muscle amount such men would typically lose in a year's time. When the subjects engaged in exercise two times per week, they exhibited significant strength gains, especially when contrasted to those who took the placebo. The study's results show that the whey protein-based supplement clearly does provide significant enhancements to senior adults' muscle mass and strength. These benefits were bolstered when they engaged in the specific exercises outlined above.“Clearly, exercise is a key part of the greatly improved health profile of our subjects,” said Kirsten Bell, a PhD student who worked on the study, “but we are very excited by the enhancements the supplement alone and in combination with exercise was able to give to our participants.” Please visit my store to purchase FREE shipping or kindly, schedule an appointment for specific recommendations on diet, supplements and exercise specific to your condition and situation.  Thank YOU!  847-577-4455 Mondays through Friday 2-6PM CST.

We've become increasingly aware of sugar's negative effects on the body. But we still tend to think of them as physical ill effects, such as increased risk for diabetes and obesity. A connection between this  and poor mental health might seem counterintuitive—especially given how much Americans seem to like comforting themselves with this. A new study, however, found that men who consume high levels of sugar are more likely to develop depression or anxiety compared to those with low-sugar diets.

The findings come from an analysis by researchers at University College London of questionnaires submitted by more than 5,000 men and 2,000 women in the United Kingdom from 1983 to 2013. Participants reported on their diet and lifestyle, including surveys about their mental health and information about their weight and height.

Researchers used the reports to estimate how much sugar people were eating daily; the top third of participants were consuming more than 67 grams of added sugar, while the bottom third consumed less than 39.5 grams. (There are 4 grams of sugar in one teaspoon.) According to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey published in 2013, men in the UK get about 75 percent of that added sugar from sweet foods and beverages.

Previous studies had shown a link between sugar consumption and depression. But knowing there's a link only takes you so far; it doesn't prove causation. Do people who feel depressed eat more sugar, or does their sugar intake actually affect their mental state, leading to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression? That's one question researchers hoped to clarify.

"Sweet food has been found to induce positive feelings in the short-term. People experiencing low mood may eat sugary foods in the hope of alleviating negative feelings," Anika Knüppel, the paper's lead author, said in a statement. "Our study suggests a high intake of sugary foods is more likely to have the opposite effect on mental health in the long-term."

Using the data, researchers found that men among the top third for sugar consumption were 23 percent more likely to experience depression or anxiety over the next five years. That's after controlling for factors such as general health and socio-economic status. Interestingly, women did not show the same pattern, and researchers aren't yet clear why. But researchers did not find that men and women with mood disorders were more likely to consume sugar, strengthening the other possibility: that sugar does affect mental health.

"High sugar diets have a number of influences on our health but our study shows that there might also be a link between sugar and mood disorders, particularly among men," Knüppel added. "There are numerous factors that influence chances for mood disorders, but having a diet high in sugary foods and drinks might be the straw that breaks the camel's back." She also called for more research into the connection among a broader population.

The study arrives as government around the world search for ways to curb sugar consumption. Canada's Northwest Territory is considering a sugar tax, and the UK already has a tax on sugary soft drinks set to go into effect next April. In the United States, as always, things are more complex: Berkeley, California, taxes sugar-sweetened beverages, with several other cities looking to follow its lead, but the sugar industry has lobbied the FDA to delay nutrition labels that would include a separate line about added sugars.

At the very least, the new study suggests that decreasing your sugar intake isn't just good for your body—it may just be good for your mind, too.
