Root canals rank as one of the most feared dental procedures there is. This is because of the discomfort associated with having the nerve and blood vessels scraped out of your tooth's root. Many people will procrastinate as long as possible because they know that while some dentists say the procedure is no more painful than having a filling, the recovery on a root canal can be lengthy, complicated and sometimes excruciating. But today, GREAT NEWS!
Researchers at Wyss Institute at Harvard University and the University of Nottingham have created a new biomaterial that not only repairs teeth, but regenerates the dentin that gets destroyed with tooth decay.
This could be the end of replacement fillings and root canals as are currently performed!
Currently, dentists use metal or composite materials to fill a tooth but it does damage to the existing tooth and breaks down over time, needing replacement and sometimes a more complicated procedure down the road.
ENTER a new synthetic biomaterial that works in conjunction with the pulp tissue that is already inside the tooth. It stimulates the stem cells it comes in contact with, and the process of healing and regeneration begins. The research team behind this won second prize in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Emerging Technologies competition and the prize monies and award will help to fund the process of getting this material out there for practical application. With this success, and the award to back the research, the team will mobilize to help medical and other industries become aware of their findings, and hopefully move this discovery into practical, every day application very, very soon!
