Is THIS vitamin an IBS BREAKTHROUGH?
January 13th, 2016 at 6:03 pm

A brand New avant garde study links IBS to low levels of this vitamin!

Estimatedly, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects approximately 9-23% of people worldwide and between 10-15% of people in the US. Although it is widely accepted that dietary factors and stress exacerbate symptoms, conventional doctors have been stymied as to why and how it develops and in conventional medicine it is also generally accepted that there is no known cure and that the condition can only be managed.

NOW, a brand new study performed at the University of Sheffield, by the Molecular Gastroenterology Research Group, discovered that out of 51 patients with IBS, 82% had low levels of vitamin D. This study, which is the first of it's kind, also found an association between vitamin D levels and the patient's perceived quality of life, as measured by the extent to which they reported impact of the IBS on their life.

IBS can be a chronic and debilitating disease that can have a severely negative, and sometimes embarrassing impact. With symptoms that include diarrhea and constipation, many individuals who suffer chose not to seek treatment, and live with the condition undiagnosed. Dr. Corfe says that this data provides “a potential new insight into the condition and importantly a new way to try to manage it”. The researchers are planning on carrying out a larger and more definitive clinical trial and suggest that vitamin D testing and supplementation could help many patients.

Before you get too excited I will give you my takeaway on this important study.  First of all , IBS is a complex disorder involving myriad factors both physical and emotional.  After treating this and many other GI disorders SUCCESSFULLY for a decade or longer I would guess that low D levels arise DUE to the illness and not as a causative factor.  Failure to absorb nutrients is a common finding in GI clients which is one reason I routinely do a vitamin and nutrient panel on most of my clients after we have resolved their IBS symptoms.  Since Vitamin D was the only vitamin tested it does not surprise me that it would show up low in the vast majority of study participants.  Digestion is a primary and complex process and I have found bacteriology to be paramount in establishing proper digestion.  I find it unlikely any vitamin will prove a "magic bullet" for its process although remedying vitamin deficiencies in all my clients greatly enhances their healing times and quality of life. as it will anyone. If you'd like to try vitamin D get tested as too high amounts are toxic.
