Does Diet and Natural Medicine help ACNE and Rosacea?
April 9th, 2015 at 6:11 pm

Just ONE Actual Apple-A-Day ACNE  Client before and After!

Can diet and natural medicine clear your skin?  In a word, YES! The picture above is just ONE of many clients I see each week with similar results. Since I specialize in this and many other dermatologic areas I thought today I would write about Acne, Rosacea, and natural medicine.

There are many different processes that cause ACNE, Rosacea, and various skin inflammations. Here are some common causes:
Digestive
*Underlying GI problems including: bacterial or yeast infections,
*Leaky Gut
* Food Allergies
*Liver problems
Other
* Adrenal or other hormonal problems
*Blood Sugar Problems
*Stress and Anxiety
*Vitamin Deficiencies
We TEST or all the above.

It is extremely important to get to the ROOT cause of your issue to resolve it properly. Yesterday I saw a two year child whose eczema had mysteriously cleared up. THEN, the young boy lost ALL HIS HAIR. If you don't get to the root cause of an issue IT GOES DEEPER!   Schedule a consultation with me to find out what is causing your problem.  It may take time to resolve but any of my long term clients will tell you it is well worth it as their health as a whole improves radically, as well as their skin.

Many natural dermatology specialists like myself recommend whole foods for people with problem skin, I adjust diets individually for clients to meet the cause and facilitate healing. In general, the following foods have beneficial effects on skin.

Although genetics may play a factor in the appearance of your skin, your diet will improve skin dramatically.
What's the most critical nutrient for clear skin?
Acne has a reputation of attacking sugar aholic teenagers' faces. But adults suffer from acne, as well. One way to flush out toxins is to make sure you're drinking enough water. Drinking at least 8-10 cups a day — and eliminating sugary drinks, both soda and juices — may help reduce acne and skin inflammation.  Still, it will only do so much if your body is creating those toxins!

Common food allergens can also manifest as ACNE, Rosacea and other skin problems.  Scratch tests are not helpful in identifying these. We offer several panels of  affordable food allergen testing.

Foods that spike your blood sugar, may cause problems in some people.  Insulin also signals the sebaceous glands to manufacture and secrete an oily substance called sebum, which in elevated amounts causes the bacterium P. acnes to proliferate and congest hair follicles.
What else should I eat?
Eat foods that don't promote inflammation. Inflammation can manifest in many different ways from heart disease to unhealthy-looking skin. Foods like vegetable oils (especially cooked ones, which are prevalent in fried and fast  food) and refined grains are all high in Omega 6 fatty acids.

Opt instead for foods high in Omega 3's. Although it may seem counter-intuitive to some people with bad skin that fatty foods can clear skin, cold-water oily fish like salmon have anti-inflammatory properties. Does fish make you ill? No problem, there are other sources of Omega 3-rich foods including walnuts, beans and flaxseed oil.

ONE  teaspoon's worth of cold-pressed seed oils like flaxseed in a low-sugar, high-protein smoothie will reduce inflammation.

Be honest with yourself: are you eating enough vegetables? You don't have to eat plain, raw veggies but do boost your intake of fresh vegetables as they contain several compounds like antioxidants, which can help clear up skin.

For overall health and wellness, including skin quality, eat a diet that is overwhelmingly comprised of all-natural and unprocessed foods. Your skin is your largest organ. Eating lots of junk food will ultimately lead to less than optimum health — and unclear skin. There is some evidence that genetically modified foods may be inflammatory so opt out of those.
