“SAVE MY GALLBLADDER” A NEW FOOD ALLERGY TEST PANEL

“What’s this headline? Can it possibly be true that a test for food allergy can save me from surgery to remove my gallbladder? My doctor and the surgeon he referred me to for the gallbladder surgery both say this claim is obviously nonsense and quackery.”

Apparently physicians who say that haven’t read or even heard of the reported research on this topic. The researcher was Dr. James C. Breneman, who was for many years of the 20th century the Chairman of the Food Allergy Committee of the American College of Allergists, not likely a position to be held by “quack doctor”.

Dr. Breneman’s report tells us that patients with either surgical or X-ray evidence of gallstones were “placed on elimination diet therapy to determine if there were certain guilty foods not generally suspected of causing gallbladder symptoms. All of these patients, 100 percent, were free from all gallbladder symptoms while they were on the basic elimination diet. Gallbladder symptoms recurred in 83 percent of the patients when eggs were added to their diets. The foods in order of their guilt are as follows: egg, pork, onion, fowl, milk, coffee, orange, corn, beans, and nuts; less frequent were apple, tomato, peas, cabbage, spices, peanuts, fish, rye, and medications.

Since reading Dr. Breneman’s research reports and books in the 1970s, I have shared this information with individuals suffering from gallbladder attacks who’ve been told they should have their gallbladders removed, encouraged them to determine what their individual food allergies might be, and then (of course) eliminate them. As Dr. Breneman would have predicted, everyone followed this recommendation had no more gallbladder symptoms at all after their food allergies were totally eliminated.

BE AWARE

As quoted above, Dr. Breneman listed “medications” as the smallest percentage of potential allergens which could trigger gallbladder spasms (“attacks”). Unfortunately names of specific medications are not mentioned in his book or research report; for this reason they are not included in the  test panel. If you are taking any medications—particularly patented or formerly patented medications—please check with your physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural medicine before discontinuing any medications.

Also be aware: Some individuals whose gallbladder symptoms have been eliminated by adherence to an allergy-free diet are told that despite that, they should still have their gallbladders removed because “the gallstones might cause trouble in the future.” However, as noted in the article on another page of this newsletter, a major medical journal article concluded (in the 20th century) that if a person had gallstones but no pain, so-called “silent gallstones”, it’s best not to operate as the risks of surgery are greater than the risk of blockage of the bile duct. Have seen no contradiction of this conclusion in either the 20th or 21st centuries.
