In a society of people attached to their pets, it may be no surprise that veterinarians around the country say they are also seeing a greater demand for the service. Dr. Barbara Royal, a vet in private practice , says she has been fully booked virtually since the day she received her acupuncture license eight years ago. "People were desperate for it," she said.
Dr. Royal uses the technique mostly on cats and dogs hobbled by arthritis, but recently she has been summoned to treat more exotic animals. At Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, she regularly uses acupuncture to alleviate arthritis in a 1,600-pound Bactrian camel, now able to run again for the first time in years.
"I think the trend in animals is correlating with what's happening in humans," she said. "There's a holistic movement out there, and if people have found something that works for them, they want it for their pets, too."
Acupuncture helps depression more effectively than drug therapy!
Research suggests that acupuncture may be an effective treatment for healing depression. A pilot study by psychologist John Allen of The University of Arizona in Tucson suggests that acupuncture may prove to be at least as effective in the treatment of depression as psychotherapy or drug therapy.
Allen's work represents the first scientifically controlled study of the healing efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of depression in the Western literature. The double-blind study was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health Office of Alternative Medicine
Allen cites the commonness of depression and the failure of standard medicine as reasons for exploring the efficacy of alternative treatments. "If you factor in the number of people who don't get well in response to standard Western treatments for depression" says Allen, "and then add the people who drop out of treatment before getting well, one half of the people who start treatment do not get well during the typical course of treatment."
In a large-scale study by Harvard Medical School published in the New England Journal of Medicine, depression was among the most frequently-reported conditions, and one of the top five conditions for which people were more likely to seek alternative treatments. Acupuncture was one of the alternative treatments listed in the study.
According to Chinese medicine, acupuncture achieves its effects by altering the flow of energy and blood through the body.
ACUPUNCTURE NOT PAINFUL SAYS RESEARCHER
Dr. Tong Joo Gan a researcher at Duke University says a barrier to getting people to use the better option of ACUPUNCTURE in many medical areas “is getting people to understand that while needles are used, it is not a painful experience".
I have neever had someone stop treatment due to any pain issues. I too think it is important that people know this.
Acupuncture more effective than drugs for chronic headaches!
Researches at DukeUniversity found that ACUPUNCTURE works better than drugs to reduce the severity and frequency of chronic headaches. A number of studies with 4000 patients, with migraine, tension headache and other forms of chronic headache showed that ACUPUNCTURE patients reported greater headache relief than those taking drugs.
"Acupuncture is becoming a favorable option for a variety of purposes, ranging from enhancing fertility to decreasing post-operative pain, because people experience significantly fewer side effects and it can be less expensive than other options," Dr. Tong Joo Gan, who led the study, said in a statement.
"One of the barriers to treatment with acupuncture is getting people to understand that while needles are used, it is not a painful experience," Gan said. "It is a method for releasing your body's own natural painkillers."
Acupuncture helpful for cancer patients!
Acupuncture helps relieve pain and dry mouth in head and neck cancer patients.
This was one of the headlines coming out of the American Society for Clinical Oncology's annual meeting in Chicago in June 2008. More than 3000 cancer specialists gathered to hear latest advances in drug treatment and the “significant role of holistic medicine, especially ACUPUNCTURE, in cancer treatment".
"Acupuncture is well tolerated and I think it's appropriate therapeutic option to consider," said Dr. David Pfister, an oncologist at New YorK's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
and as Star Magazine reported in April 2007, Britney Spears appears to have received ACUPUNCTURE type therapy called cupping to help with returning to good shape after the birth of her baby. Brown skin marks were bserved on her upper back reminiscent to the marks seen on Gwyneth Paltrow who previously made the headlines of all the major newspapers around the world after using the little known ACUPUNCTURE treatment.
