Pfizer-will cut 800 jobs this year due to disappointing research findings and anticipated losses in revenues. Pfizer is the USA's largest drug manufacturer employing 10,000 people worldwide. Pfizer is now limiting new drug development to specific conditions such as diabetes and Alzheimer's.
Listerine may cause cancer-
New research from Australian researchers suggests that Listerine a common mouth wash may cause oral cancers. Researchers believe that it is due to the product's high (26%) alcohol content which causes damage to the epithelial cells.
Vick's dangerous for young children
Popular cold medicine Vick's vaporub may cause respiratory distress in young children according to researchers at Wake Forest University. The prouct is thought to cause increased mucus production in children and airway inflammation due to the small size of the airways themselves. The product has been marketed since 1891. Lead researchers recommend avoidance in children less than two years of age.
Poor sleep linked to more colds-
US researchers found that people who slept less than 7 hours were nearly three times more likely to develop colds, than people who slept 8 or more hours. Also, the colds in the sleep deprived groups lasted over 50% longer.
Lack of rest has a deleterious effect upon the immune system, as does stress.

Amish children don't get autism. Lancaster, PA children who are Amish and not vaccinated do not get autism according to epidemiologic research. While epidemiologic research does not Prove that vaccines cause autism it does intrigue and pave the way for further investigation.

Cholesterol levels irrelevant in predicting heart attack risk - A brand new national study showed that over 75% of patients hospitalized due to a heart attack had cholesterol levels that would indicate that they were at low risk for a cardiovascular event. One interesting finding was that 50% of those patients had low levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol. Currently, no drug therapy exists that raises "good" cholesterol. Exercise is one way to appreciably raise HDL levels.
Osteoarthritis-
occurs due to loss of a protein called: HMGBZ which in aging mammals causes a reduction or elimination of chondrocytes in the cartilage. New treatments will then be geared towards stimulating this protein. National Academy of Sciences.

More Kids being treated with alternatives....
The US government released data showing that one in nine children were being treated with alternative medicine. Diabetes halted by Vitamin D!
Loyola researchers found that adequate amounts of vitamin D may prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and reduce its complications. Evidence has begun showing a link between vitamin D levels and insulin secretion and utilization. Vitamin D deficiency results from poor nutrition and reduced exposure to sunlight. Treatment with the active form vitamin d-3 is important the preferred range is: 30-60ng/ml.
